Hello, I am Kelly. I joined this group in January 2020. I am a wife, mother of 4, and Kindergarten teacher. 2022 was a rough year for me and I gained a lot during the first half- around 10 pounds, and only lost half. In 2023, I want to be consistent in all aspects of my life.
January Goals
1. 30 days of my morning routine and evening routine (I am starting tomorrow)
2. Log my calories
3. move my body everyday
@adrimango I do not trust the calories fitbit or mfp gives me. I went to macros onc and used their free calculator based on my activity level and manually adjusted mfp to meet their recommendations. When I log my workouts, I always put 1 calorie.6 -

I was all set to do my intro, but got a text from my colleague that she has covid and now I will be the teacher in charge this coming week. So now, I'm hustling to pull together some plans because she doesn't have much to go with. New Years and Letter J. Teacher friends, If you know, you know.
So, I'm going to go take a walk outside before it's too late then I'll be back to check in.5 -
@ells_bellz Glad you're sticking around. We can all relate to that feeling, you're among friends for sure...
Happy New Year, let's make 2023 amazing!!4 -
wishfuljune wrote: »➡️ If it’s 10 minutes of burpees because that’s all my schedule will allow that day, or a 60 minute spin class because it’s a light day, any intentional movement counts and I will no longer punish myself by creating a sense of failure by not “going hard” for 45 minutes or more a day.
@ashleycarole86 - I’d like to join the step challenge this month, and set my goal for 5,000 steps. Thanks!
Got you down for 5K. Happy to have you on the team!
By the way, I could totally relate to your comment about no longer feeling a sense of failure if you don't go hard 45 minutes or more.
My husband @bowens1973 were just talking about this
We are both avid Peloton riders, and specifically we like to do Power Zone Training. Most of those classes are a minimum of 45 minutes
What we were both finding is that if time was short we were missing workouts altogether because 45 minutes felt daunting, rather than hopping on and picking from the other content that is 30 minutes or less!
So, I like what you put and I can use a bit of this in my life
I actually exhibited this yesterday, when my husband was on the bike. We had to be ready to meet friends for NYE and I knew I wouldn't have time to ride. I was feeling frustrated by that, and it was a high likelihood I was going to do nothing. Instead, I put on YouTube, found a HIIT workout, and did that for 15 minutes. I was beat! My super sore muscles today tell me that 15 minutes was ENOUGH! And something is always better than nothing

Happy New Year team! I have a MFP question: Because I have MFP connected to my FitBit, MFP adds exercise calories throughout the day as I move. Do you stick to your original calorie budget or do you use the updated amount MFP gives you? I guess the proof will be in the pudding if I log consistently and use the updated higher budget and still lose, but I'm curious what others do. Thanks!
I have always ate back my exercise calories. However, for most of my weight loss journey I was doing quite a bit of exercise and was losing at the 2+ pounds per week mark so it came from the fact that if I didn't I would have felt like I was under nourishing myself.
Depending on how your calorie goal is set and what factors went in to determining it, this may not be the right strategy for you.
I do recommend you give yourself a few weeks of consistency, see how your results are, and then adjust from there.
For me, my exercise calories were relatively accurate, but many find that isn't the case. There are so many ways to get into a deficit. I think it depends what is best mentally for you. Some have said that if they track and eat back exercise calories that it encourages them to work out to eat (which I can see), so that may not be the mindset you want. You could always eat at maintenance calories or maintenance - 10% and then use your exercise to create the deficit.. there are so many ways!
Test some things out, be vigilant about tracking and keeping your data, and you should be able to determine the best method for you!5 -
@ashleycarole86 I would love to join the step challenge please - 10,000
Got you down - wonderful to have you on board!
Ruptured ACL... wow, that must have been so painful.

Last week of exercise for Dec:
Dec 25 - 4431 steps
Dec 26 - 952 steps
Dec 27 - 7201 steps
Dec 28 - 1769 steps
Dec 29 - 7396 steps
Dec 30 - 7754 steps
Dec 31 - 8667 steps, 17 minutes HIIT
Told you I was fully bed ridden for two days!
One of my January goals is to get back to my 10K steps a day (including exercise minutes)
Looking forward to that!5 -
@ashleycarole86 I would love to join the step challenge please. My goal is 5000 steps3

Good evening and happy new year. Sylvia, 53, here in Massachusetts. Weight has fluctuated through the decades but usually never stayed down for too long. Have been with Waistaways since Feb 2020 - with great support, accountability and some obsessiveness, I did really well. Then...things/stress started getting in the way and also I somehow didn't have the same obsessiveness. I haven't gained it all back but this past summer was super disappointing to not fit into clothes. I've got a fulltime office job and outside of that am caregiver for my 93 yr old dad. Am committed to logging ALL that I eat - and my diary is open to anyone (accountability you see) - if anyone wants to friend me, the newsfeed can be yet one more place to check in for a boost. The habit tracker is GREAT - I threw in a strange one...to get the dishes in the sink done before I go to bed - doubles as being nicer to wake up to and less rush in the workday mornings to prep my lunches. Looking forward to this month and making a difference.5

Hi all,
I am Amelia from New Zealand. I have 2 children and been married to my husband for 7 years. I have always been quite fit, playing soccer since I was 9, I started piling on all my current weight almost immediately after I got married, I had not played soccer for a couple of years and no longer had a gym membership causing me to gain 15kgs in the first year. I was getting on top of this weight gain in 2019 I had joined a local soccer team and had lost 8kgs when I ruptured my acl, and then COVID hit. I regained the 8kgs plus another 10kgs.
My goals for January are:
Track everything
10000 steps daily
2-3 litres of water daily
@ashleycarole86 I would love to join the step challenge please - 10,000
Party Alert! Our First GREEN weigh-in for 2023 You lost something right off the bat in this new month/year. Thanks Amelia! Our stats are on the rise from here on in.
Your goals are a great place to get back to it. Tracking, moving, water. Refinements in diet and exercise can evolve over time. I am so glad to have you with us!

What an inspiring beginning to 2023! I love having some things to think about. Here are some of those thoughts -
@adrimango I have never planned to eat my exercise calories, partly because I am a bit loose about my calorie tracking. I like having a bit of "loose" in the plan, so the exercise calories are useful sometimes when eating gets a bit high, or when I might be inaccurate in logging, or... I am good with chaos, so having a bit of wiggle room either way works for me. But I do try to stay within the smaller calorie amount, knowing that it might not be so accurate, and NEVER thinking that the calorie counts for exercise are accurate.
@YinxFed We heard that word with yourself. I think you can manage a 0.5 pound loss per week - really stick it, and even if you don't always make it, that word will gain power Hit the STOP button when you get negative! Go for that 15 minutes of sweat or the STOP eating whenever you can. And then you get to tell us how great it feels. We'll be there when it works and when it doesn't - but hoping for party hats at the end of 2023!
@KellyBgetsfit You too - the consistency! You have done so well during some times, now all you need to do is expand those. It won't be dramatic or all at once, but you'll be so proud if more weeks are consistent than not. Hugs to you!!!
@micki48 Yikes. Just when you were taking a breath from all the stress, you are covering for a colleague with covid! Channel your great energy, and love those little people. It's your superpower
I'm also chiming in on the feeling that less=failure. I'm just about to turn 69 this month - 70th year starting! I am walking that line between less because maybe that is enough, and more because that keeps me strong and feeling great. We are all on some part of that line. I'm glad to have pushed things up a bit lately (except for right now while I have covid, dammit) - my "strength reduces pain" mantra still feels true. Challenging ourselves is fabulous. Keep doing it! Challenge your kids, challenge your friends and family - we all need that.
This team is here to challenge you. Never forget that. Sure, we're also here to hug you when it goes awry, but the right challenge at the right time is a joy. Choose a challenge that works and keep looking until you find the one that is right for right now.6 -
Hi everyone! I'm Kellie, married, early 30s, one cat, no kids, live in Alberta, Canada. I'm a process engineer and trying to complete my master's in chemical engineering but my master's supervisor kept ghosting me so I've had to push finishing it another semester.
I've been MIA as my father-in-law had a stroke near the middle of December and he's in a hospital an hour and a half drive from me and hubs. He's still in the hospital but might be transferred to one in Calgary.
@jugar I'd like to stay on the support team for January and my weight is 197, quite up from where I was...
My goals this year are to finish my stupid master's and train for a half-Ironman. I'm hoping to start the training once the master's is done - when I have more time to mentally devote myself. I don't know if I'll actually do the race or just train for it 😅5 -
@ashleycarole86 I would love to join the step challenge please. My goal is 5000 steps
Fantastic!! Got you marked down to join us3 -
Hi Team,
I'm Courtney from Val-des-Monts, Québec. 42, married, 2 and a half cats, no biological kids but one 17 year old step-daughter who's with us on the occasional weekend. We live in a house that has turned into a mega renovation pit and we're slowly plucking away at the to do list. Christmas eve had us mixing and pouring cement and boxing day had us spraying polyurethane foam over an exposed rock in our basement. All while suffering mildly with Covid.
I joined the team in late 2020 after seeing a photo of myself and realizing that my perception of my self wasn't who I wanted to be. I've managed to lose 50lbs with the team and keep it off for over a year. I did rebound about 10lbs total from my lowest weight, and realistically I would like to be down at least 20lbs from where I am, but the health and energy benefits of where I am have satisfied me and I'm comfortable where I am, if this is where I stay. I would like to make some adjustments to my habits however and become that person who exercises intentionally in the evenings. I am currently a person who really likes binge watching tv shows when it's dark outside after dinner. I have signed up for a workout class on Wednesday nights and I play hockey on Thursdays so all I need is to deny myself the couch for an hour or so another 2 nights a week in order to consider myself the person I want to be. Once this covid is kicked to the curb, I will hop to it!
I'm going to stay on the sidelines on maintenance for the rest of the month of January, to ease myself back into the zone of logging food for all meals after breakfast and more drinking water, but I think by February I will be ready to jump back to the regular team and see if I can knock those 20lbs off in 2023.
I will be back in the office in person more by then so the structure of logging will probably help with my stress. I detest the idea of going into the office. I'm considering changing jobs to one where the in person requirements are minimized, even if I like the work less, I dislike it that much. I just find the expense and loss of time commuting not worth it, but that's beyond my control. Anytime I get worked up thinking about it, I'm just going to have to say 'Stop it!' LOL That video was great.7 -
Happy New Year! I’m Michele, 58, married 40 years this year. I have two grown kids and an adorable granddaughter. I live in the Philadelphia area of Pennsylvania, USA. I joined this group in February 2019. Not quite as long as @jugar , but one of the longer members. This group is so important to me. You are friends who feel like family because we share so much. I have not had a good year like some others. I moved north from North Carolina and have gained ever since. 22 pounds!! At one point, before the pandemic, I was down 27 or so pounds. I’m barely holding on to any loss. But, I am here ready to take on 2023. My mantra for today forward is “I am a person who takes care of my health.” I have heard you all in my head today. It’s been hard to switch my motivation back on. I made the choices to resist the things that are not good for me today as I heard you all cheering me on. I made a choice to be a person who exercises and did Pilates and a one mile walk. (I’m going to give 31 miles in January a try too. )I made a choice to get all my food logged and drink my water. And guess what? Those choices that I made (with your help in my ear) made today my first perfect day in a long time.
❤️🙏🏼
So I’m looking forward to the next year with you and getting to know all our new friends.8 -

It has been a good 1st day of January. My case of covid is less tiring today, so I got in a nice long ramble in the woods (slow, but beautiful!), a short Pilates session, and 45 minutes on the exercise bike while watching an exciting show. It feels good to move more - I am SO bored from sitting around and resting for the past few days. I hope to test negative soon so I can really get back to things.
So yes @ashleycarole86 I'll be back on the steps/exercise roster this month! I put my step tracker back on this morning.
And now for the nightly nag!! You know you love it!
Who's up for weigh-ins?
@annieo22 (hoping you are still with us!)
@Major_Psy_Girl (due today - you are new and I hope you find this spot!)
@CarolAnnM2
@MoonlitMuse
@kto0194
@cleaneater80
Thanks!4 -
Woo hoo @jugar
Always glad to have you and your wonderfully inspiring numbers back!
Brad and I were both hung over today (boo!) but I convinced him to join me and the dog for a long walk to celebrate the start of the New Year and to set the right intentions. We went for over 7 km in the city and even ran into some friends on the walk. It was nice.
We only ate two meals today as we got up late. Calories on track, no alcohol, water drank... habit tracker is full of green for the first day!5 -
Today was a pretty good day with the exception of a big dessert tonight. Meals were good and I did my workout (biking and HIIT) for 35 minutes. My husband and I decided on dessert tonight since it's our last late night of vacation. Fresh baked cookies, ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream. It was good but now I'm wide awake and it's past midnight. Sugar always messes with my sleep. I can drink coffee at 10 pm and sleep like a baby. Give me Sugar and I'll be up all night. Tomorrow I will be intermittent fasting and getting my workout in.7

That’s the end of 2022, that’s the end of my celebrations and that’s the end of my over indulgences in food!! My son and I arrived home shortly after midnight from a great trip to Niagara Falls.
NOW LETS GET BACK TO THIS BUSINESS OF LOSING WEIGHT AND MAKE 2023 MEMORABLE!10 -
@jugar glad you're able to get outside and that your bout of covid might be nearing the end - this new variant is rapidly becoming the most prevalent. @CarolAnnM2 Great photo and yes, NOW LETS GET BACK TO THIS BUSINESS OF LOSING WEIGHT AND MAKE 2023 MEMORABLE!
and @Ashleycarole86 good push thru the hangover to get out for a stroll - I'll bet you both went to bed last night feeling good.
A friend came by yesterday afternoon for tea and I pulled one of the last frozen Aldi tarts from the freezer - a sweet indulgence but better that I pull it out when there is more than just Dad and I in the house to eat it. Logged it. Must get out to the market today and get some greens for a week of salads at work. Planning to make J. Oliver's curry meatballs w/minced turkey - will enter it all into the recipe maker to determine calories/serving.6 -

Looks good to me3 -
I think I'm going to try something. Each week I will check off every single box in the habit tracker for the week. Then if I don't do something, I have to remove the check mark. That will be harder than simply not putting one in. I'm not sure if this will be useful, but often when I pre-log food or exercise, dry days, etc. I stick with it better than if I only log afterwards. I'll let you know how it goes! Anyone else who feels like joining the experiment - go for it! We'll compare notes.7
-
@jugar - That sounds like a cool idea! Would love to know how the pre-logging goes!
My husband and I are house hunting and we’ve got a full day of homes to see today so I think all that walking will count towards my walking outside of the walks with my dog. 😂
I completed Sydney Cummings Houdyshell’s Effort Day 1 this morning after our walk, and now we are meal prepping lunch - a lentil chili - for the rest of the work week so that we have a nutritious meal for us to enjoy while at work.5 -
Ok folks, I did a HIIT workout on New Year's Eve and my leg muscles are STILL screaming at me! The hobbling is real - LOL. Tells me I need to be doing more lower body strength.. I tend to skip it because I ride the bike a lot and my legs are fairly strong, but that's clearly different than doing squats and such... this proves to me trying to be well rounded is a good thing.
Proud to report steps for Jan week 1:
1/1 - 13,002 steps
The weather is beautiful again today. We'll get out, but not for quite as long. I hope to supplement with either a bike ride or some strength training (but it'll have to be upper body, LOL)
Last day of time off for the holidays before my company re-opens. I am trying not to think about it, or only to think about it in powerful ways. Work got the best of me Sep-Dec, and I am so much happier when I'm not there. So, I need to find ways to stay on track when I'm back, and not let those emotions derail me
@jugar
I'm glad you explained your strategy because I just went into the habit tracker and saw all the green and had to check I didn't accidentally hit shift and select a bunch of your rows. LOL. It all makes sense now. Good plan - commit early and don't let yourself down!!4 -
@wishfuljune good luck house hunting! I know it can be stressful but I loved looking at different houses.
It is almost 60F outside, so I decided to take a stroll around the neighborhood. My husband and I have a loop that is about 1.3 miles, but I wanted to see how far it would be if I went around every little cul de sac. It ended up being 2.44 miles! And, we have lived here over a year and I just found a second community pond that I didn't know we had 😂
