DW, My heart goes out to your DD. It is wonderful though that she has such a good relationship with your DS and his family.

Shari, yay for the inverter table for your DH. I hope it helps him. Let us know how you do with it should you try it. Enjoy the time with your son. Great that he is going to the gym with you. Certainly going to the gym and your cross country skiing is important to helping to keep you at your good weight.

I enjoyed my day today. I had one sort of major "to do" item that I had been avoiding, but for some reason was inspired to do it today. I am proud of myself for doing this on a Saturday when I sometimes avoid such activities. I had a few cookies today but didn't go overboard. I am just amazed how many sweets we still have. I will freeze some of them eventually, but right now my freezer is very full with other (mostly healthy) items. How I wish I had a bigger freezer. I even put some sweets outside in our gas grill (which we haven't used in years) because it is cold enough out there to keep the baked goods fresh.

I hope that your DD can hold on to the happiness she experienced while away DW. I am hoping that our son who is visiting with us will feel refreshed after his time here. We haven't done too much, but I think he is enjoying his time, especially the meals. Food is so costly so many young adult have to shop wisely and don't the extra funds for meats and fruits. Happy to be able to provide that for him.

I had a surge of motivation today and did well with staying on track. Not sure where the motivation came from, but I hope it continues. It felt good to make wise choices and avoid my trigger foods. I will try to hold on to that feeling the next time I am tempted to stray so far. It will be a little challenging on New Year's Eve as our neighbor Jane and her DH are coming here for an early evening get together. Jane and I are sharing the food prep, focusing on simple finger foods. I am planning on hummus and veggies, some cheese and crackers. I know Jane is bringing shrimp, but I am not sure what else. John and I feel so blessed to have such dear neighbors as these.

I won't be challenged on New Year's Eve lol. I already know that there will be one very poor meal choice- Chinese Food. I am focusing on only giving in to that one meal and will strive to stay the course with all of my other healthy habits. Finger's crossed!

I had a neighbour named Jane too. She was the best neighbour I ever had, and is still an important part of my life.

I am hoping to be compliant with my healthy habits today. I need to get back to be consistent with my eating plan and tracking. I am hoping that writing my goal down, will help me to achieve it.

Ah, when you mention Chinese food Shari I long for it! I cannot even remember the last time we had it because John really isn't a fan. I think I'll just have to get it sometime even if John doesn't want it.

I had another good food day....amazing really because usually I would still be in "holiday mode" for eating. I am prepared to do my best for new year's eve with the neighbors. Usually on New Year's day we have the traditional pork and sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. But I am changing it up this year with just some sausage which I had in the freezer and sauerkraut to avoid having leftovers of pork and potatoes for several days. I am leaning more and more to avoiding meat, especially pork and beef. I will continue to have chicken and turkey while I explore more vegetarian options. Not sure how far I will take this but plan to look into in the new year.

Hey Paula- curious about your choice to steer away from meat. I have gone in the other direction to make sure that I am getting enough protein in my day so I don't lose muscle as I age. I always struggle with over eating in fats. So less cooking with fats or putting butter on things is my goal for the new year. The meat does come with fat, so it is a balance that I have to keep on top of.

Hello! Happy New Year to you both! I am hoping to have some quiet time later this evening to review last year's goals and do a rough draft for this year, which I will finalize tomorrow after I "sleep on it"-LOL!! We will have pork roast and sauerkraut, baked potatoes and salad tomorrow. DH says that he is going to start eating healthier tomorrow-his version of "healthier" would make any Dr run screaming-fatty meats, full fat cheese, lots of eggs and butter and very few veggies, if any. Low carb ice cream is on his menu....that is why we often cook our separate meals. I like/need to get plenty of protein but from leaner cuts of meat. I do include beef and pork but also chicken and turkey. I have found that, if I have a serving of meat with dinner, I am less likely to eat anything before bedtime. That is a big win for me because late night eating has been a huge problem most of my life.
It turns out that DD is going to the home of a family friend tonight. We have been friends with the whole family for more than 40 years and DD has been friends with one of the daughters who is close to her age. The family has included DD in many of their family activities these past 2 years, such as cookie baking, craft gatherings, and now NY's eve! I am so happy that she can do something without us hanging around! She is coming for dinner tomorrow as well as the Rose Bowl game (Go Buckeyes!!). Have a wonderful New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, and all of 2025!!

Happy Healthy 2025 to all of us!!

DW, So good that your DD had such healthy plans for New Year's Eve with such a close and considerate family. I am sure they are a blessing to your entire family.

My interest in moving away from meat is related to a few influences. Janice, an acquaintance from church is around my age, thin, and seemingly relatively healthy. Recently her doc was concerned about some health issues for her including heart issues and pre-diabetes. Since moving towards a vegetarian diet over the past several months with an eye on vegan (not for me yet for sure) Janice's numbers have improved remarkably. She says she feels amazingly better and her doc is pleased. Since both my dad and his mother had Type II diabetes this has long been a concern of mine. The second influence on my interest in this direction is my concern for the way animals are used in the meat process. I have always had a fondness for pigs and know they are intelligent animals. I have been watching some videos of the inhumane ways the animals are treated in the process of getting them to us for our dinner tables, and it has begun to trouble me more and more. It all sort of stems from my love for animals. I am still in the early stages of considering these changes and could change direction I am sure, but this is the basis for my interest. I will have to do much more research and also look into a WW vegetarian option for direction and ideas.

We had a lovely visit with our neighbors Jane and Blaine (I think it is cute how their names rhyme). Getting everything ready (including cleaning up again) went well. We had good discussions and a pleasant evening. They left before 9 pm. By the time they left I was exhausted. John was a big help to me setting up and cleaning up. I couldn't have done this without him.

Happy New Year Ladies! We enjoyed our evening and stayed up to ring in the New Year. Then stayed up until we finished our card game- which I won.

I hope you will do well with your venture into eating more vegetarian Paula. I have a very soft heart and would have to be vegetarian if it were up to me to butcher what I eat. I totally understand that perspective.

I have had such a wonderful time off from work and not really wanting to go back to it tomorrow. I still want the pay check, so not quite retirement for me yet.

Shari, Best wishes as you return to work. Good news is it is a short week! Most likely you will know when it is time to retire I think. With economies the way they are (though admittedly I am not aware of any specifics of the Canadian economy), it seems wise to have a pay check as long as you are up for it.

I had a good day today. Often I use Jan 1 and our pork and sauerkraut with potatoes traditional meal as my reason for delaying a more serious approach to food choices. I wanted to make the most of my recent motivational outlook so I was fairly strict with my choices today. I didn't even cave on any of the many sweets we have on hand. I didn't track my food today but will start tomorrow. I am sure, however, that my choices were well within my point range. Of course, as always for me, the challenge now will be to string together enough good days like today to get rid of more pounds, feel better, and look better.

Back to work today. I get to work from home, which is wonderful. My supervisor and another co-worker are taking today off, so there is not much of a point for me to go into the office. I was able to get an extra half hour of sleep.

I didn't end up tracking all of my meals yesterday so I will be joining you on that goal for today Paula. Let's get back into it and see some pounds drop- even just one!

Ah that extra 1/2 hour of sleep means so much. It is great that you can work from home on some days. I did track my food today and used all my points but didn't go over. Now WW is tracking macros which I know you are familiar with Shari. I am not at all conversant in this area. I got a little info from WW but haven't digested it yet (excuse the pun). I will keep learning and researching this now that it is a part of WW.

I think that it will be helpful to track macros Paula. Once you know how much of each macro you need, you will begin to play a bit of a Tetris game to balance them. If I don't track, I am apt to eat too much fat and not enough protein. You may find that same thing happens as it is quite common.

I am up on time, and hopefully have time to pack enough food for lunch and part of dinner as I have to work until 5:45pm. With a half hour drive home, I know I will be hungry by the time I leave work. If I take good food, I should be okay. If I don't, I will grab snacks that are not good. Planning is key.

Hello! It sounds as if you both have 2025 off to a great start! The Noom ap that I've been using has started tracking protein as well as calories. It also tracks the green, yellow and orange foods and tells where your eating is in comparison to your "ideal" percentage for each color. I typically am too heavy on orange and too light on green foods. Today for lunch a coworker offered me some of her homemade cheeseburger soup and I couldn't resist. It was delicious but my mind went to how I could make it with less fat and calories. I will need to work on that.
I have noticed a change in my body over the past couple of months and can't really label it as good or bad-more something I need to be mindful of and plan for. My body doesn't seem to tolerate having an empty stomach very well and I start feeling like I will be sick to my stomach. I find that I am needing to eat every few hours. I have been planning a healthy morning snack but should consider an afternoon snack as well. I am famished when I get up in the morning and need to eat something like toast fairly soon. This is all very different from how I've been most of my life but I've never heard of it being a symptom of anything so I will try to go with it in the healthiest manner possible-as you mentioned Shari, "planning is key"! Have a great weekend!

DW, I often want and have toast or a bagel in the morning. A bagel is 6 points on weight watchers. For me, I think it is worth the points as I find it very satisfying and it helps keep me on track. I too find myself struggling with the empty stomach feeling. I wonder if it is a function of our age. The past few days I have been having fresh veggies like baby carrots, celery sticks, and cucumber spears with some hummus. This has helped keep me satisfied. I know it is better than having a sweet when I get that empty stomach feeling. Also fresh fruit is on my list of "go to" foods for that kind of hunger.

Shari, I haven't figured out my desirable macro ranges. I guess I will have to dig a little deeper with the info from WW. They tell me my points up front but so far I haven't found macro ranges.

Today was a struggle for me despite all my good intentions. I went over my points and am disappointed especially compared to how well I did on Jan 1 and 2. My motivation was not as strong today. I have already given myself a pep talk for Saturday!

Let's have a healthy weekend ladies!

How many calories are you both eating? The hunger pains could be due to not eating enough. I have read that it is a good thing to be hungry when you wake up and a breakfast with sugar, fat and protein is a smart way to start the day. Not just having a cup of coffee. That was a big change for me. Now I enjoy a full breakfast and plan for two more meals and three snacks. My last snack is a cup of hot cocoa made with milk and some collagen every night before bed. I know the diet we were on was very low in calories and I have had a mind shift and eat closer to 2000 calories instead of 1200. More calories and I am maintaining my weight. In a month I am doing eat 1800 calories and keep that up for 4 months and see if I can slowly drop some weight. Right now I am building muscle, so I get to eat more. It's a different strategy, but I am liking it a lot.

I don't know my calories because I just go by the WW points. I will have to figure out a typical day of calories. On most days for breakfast I have a hard boiled egg with my bagel so that includes the protein and I use a little SmartBalance or I Can't Believe It's Not Butter Light, so that would be my fat. Most of my lunches and dinners are protein and veggies, usually with a carb....but I have to be careful with the rice/noodles/potatoes, etc. because that is where I struggle with portion control.

Today went by very quickly, not sure why. I didn't have much on my to do list but the day still flew by. It is quite cold and very windy here and will get colder in the coming week. I feel for John having to take Buster outside several times a day. They do well outside together. I shiver just when he opens the door to go outside!

Now that I am tracking my meals I am also weighing each item, that really helps to determine my proportions. I haven't been as strict the last few weeks, but after today, things will get back to full routine. I haven't been weighing my food since my son arrived, but I will again tomorrow. As long as I stay away from chips and cookies again, I will be happy.

We are in a very cold snap here too Paula. It should warm up on Wednesday and I am very happy about that! My DH is telling me about a winter storm hitting some central states. That doesn't sound good at all! Lots of snow and freezing rain.

Today will be the official last day of the Christmas season. Our son heads home tomorrow morning and it will be a full work week. I will start to put the decorations away once he leaves. I don't usually enjoy decorating, but this year I did and I really loved the warmth they brought to our home. I guess I am not ready to be a grinch just yet.

I plan to have Craig come sometime this week to take down the Christmas tree and "undecorate" the inside. It is too cold to take down the outside lights so that can wait. It's nice that your son was able to spend the holidays with you. I am sure you will miss him when he leaves.

I used to weigh my food on some other diets, but I haven't done so lately. I sometimes "eye ball" the size, but weighing is definitely better! I was very out of sorts today. I grazed all day on some zero point and low point foods. But I just didn't feel like myself and didn't feel well. I was very tired all day. I rested in the afternoon and evening and didn't get to do some of the things I wanted to do just because I was so tired. I have quite a bit to accomplish tomorrow so I hope my energy (such as it usually is) returns.

All of our guests are gone, it's a full work week and it's time to clean and cook as per usual. I would like to sit down at the calendar and pencil in some things to accomplish in January. I am also fully back to my eating plan and that is a very good thing! I will make a sourdough loaf to send to the neighbours. They haven't had one since before Christmas. I know they will appreciate it, and I still have a few slices in the freezer. Being able to make bread is a work from home perk.

I have put on one pound of late, and I am pretty sure it's from being away from my eating plan for two weeks. It will be good to be back on it and see if I get it back off this week.

Only one pound is terrific Shari!!! When I deviate like I did for the holidays I usually gain about 5 or more pounds! I finally stepped on the scale today and am I up 5+ pounds. I know I was living in denial for sometime so this is a real reality check for me.

Whatever was going on with me on Sunday was gone by Monday. I had a very good day today....felt strong and well rested and was able to accomplish my to do list with time to spare. I am behind in my reading for my online classes for Tuesday evening so I think I will spend most of Tuesday reading and making healthy food choices. I have got to drop those pounds and get moving in the right direction again.

Another work from home day and I am so thankful! I bake another loaf of bread while I work and hopefully get some steps in during my breaks. I haven't been getting enough movement in the last couple of weeks. I have been faithful about going to the gym, so at least there is that.

Tonight I am going to try and make a gluten free casserole for a youth family. The mom emailed over the Christmas break and let me know that she lost her husband on Christmas morning. He had some type of surgery and passed away a week later. I don't have the details. She is celiac and so is one of her sons. I have little to offer her, but I thought I could take a dinner over. It is quite sad for her and her two boys. They are in grade 6 & 8. Lots of heartache out there in the world.

Very kind of you Shari to cook such a specialty food for the family who lost their dad. So sad for such a loss. You are right about the heartache. I am sure there is comfort for this family knowing they have support such as yours.

I had a better day and realize that I have to keep fresh veggies on hand cut up and ready to snack on. With them available I am much more likely to stay on plan and not stray with a snack of unhealthy high point sweets. My motivation is still strong so I hope that translates into more action to make a difference.

I am back to the office today which means I will need dig deep to stick to my eating plan. I find it difficult to not snack at the office as there are always temptations that are not healthy around. I bought some mangoes. I will cut one up and take it with me, hopefully that will be the option I choose to eat if I get hungry between meals or feel like I need something sweet.

Good to have the veggies ready to go Paula. I need to do the same thing. I like to keep carrots on hand to snack on. They are my first choice.

Hello! I hope you are both staying warm! We are in the middle of a lengthy cold spell with some snow but nothing as bad as they had in southern OH. I just checked my calorie range (a question from several messages ago). The suggested range for weight loss, given my age, activity level and goal weight, is 1200-1730 with the minimum protein I should have listed at 90g. Today I've had 1400 calories with only 74g of protein. I am going to try to find a protein drink that I can stand and that will help. I've only tried one brand (2 flavors) and it tastes like a bunch of chemicals-yuck! I still need to find an afternoon snack that is portable, not messy and will satisfy. I've worked extra and late all week and have a meeting after work tomorrow. I have a nail appt after work on Friday and also a big football game to watch!
Shari, prayers for the family who lost their husband/Dad. That is so sad.
Paula, I'm glad you were feeling better on Monday and hope that has continued! I have been so tired this week aside from all the extra work. I would be in bed right now but have clothes in the dryer that will need attention when it stops. Have a great Thursday!!

DW, is your calorie range and protein etc. info from My Fitness Pal or somewhere else? I still have not delved into the new macro info on WW. I hope it is easy to find. I tried 310 Nutrition protein drinks many years ago as it was recommended by someone on SparkPeople. As I recall they had a variety of flavors and a few tasted ok. I ordered them online, and I think they were meal replacement drinks. Just writing this to you is making me wonder if I shouldn't try them again sometime.

Shari, tough to stay away from treats in the work setting. Mangoes sound like a delicious option, sort of exotic in my view.

I had a mediocre day today. I struggled to stay on track but did log my food. I exceeded my daily allowance but tapped into the extra weekly points allowed. I accomplished one big to do item which took a bit longer than I anticipated but am just relieved that I got it done. Craig is supposed to come tomorrow to take down the Christmas tree and help me take down the other indoor Christmas decorations. It is far too cold here for him to take down the lights and outdoor wreath. Our weather forecast is probably similar to DW's area. At 7 am Thursday, the "real feel" will be 3 degrees while the thermometer will read 18. That is how strong the winds are and will continue to be for a while.

DW-I have been working hard to get enough protein and I supplement. I have been using Organika Collagen and Protein. I can pick that up from Costco. It doesn't have much of a taste and easily disappears into my morning coffee. It doesn't dissolve as well from my orange juice, but I still add it. Cottage cheese is another easy go to.

I hope all goes well with putting your Christmas things away Paula. I have most of it done, but I can see two things that I missed. I will get them tonight.

I am tackling new lifts at the gym, it's been fun. I am much less intimidated when I go than when I first started. I must say there are a lot more people there now! I hope that wears off a bit once January is over. It's a lot more crowded.

Woo hoo for you Shari advancing your gym activities. It will be interesting to see how long the January newcomers remain there. All went very well with Craig and the undecorating. I got an important phone just before he arrived and was on the calla for quite a while, but I wasn't needed for undecorating as Craig and John knew exactly what to do. I was soooo impressed with both of them. The two of them handled all of the major undecorating without me. Craig also did a grocery pick up for us, and I am now very well stocked with many healthy choices. I did very well today with staying on track and tracking every bite. As I so often say, now to just keep repeating having days like this. I felt good today too. My to do list today was a series of small chores but together added up to make me feel like I accomplished a lot.

I am also curious to see how long the gym will stay busier with the new people. DH came with me and worked out along with me rather than on his own. I enjoyed my workout much more having company and an encourager.

Super thankful that it is Friday!!!!! I just need to get a day's work done and then I can enjoy the time off work and do things for me. Hopefully that includes putting the last two Christmas decorations away.

Hopefully we can all string two days together and keep the good habits going strong.

So cool that your DH is a good workout partner and encourager. Does he have a gym membership too or is he able to come as your guest? I know some gym's in this area permit members to bring guests at times.

Today was a terrific day for me for getting things done. John and I spent hours cleaning out our family room including a small chest of drawers in there that has accumulated all sorts of items we didn't have another place to put. Well today we cleaned that monster out. I am amazed at some of the things we found and disposed of from that piece of furniture. I am also pleased with how much extra room I now have to store other items as time goes on. There is still a lot of work to do in that room to make it even better but what we accomplished today makes a huge improvement.

My food choices were good again today. I tracked and am in a good range for points. Aiming for more success tomorrow.

Here's to a wonderful weekend for all of us!
