I finished the 2nd book and started the last of the trilogy: THE UNEXPECTED GIFT by Irene Hannon.0
-
I just finished a couple books and decided to go ahead and close out January. With all of the bad weather, I read a LOT of books.
Finished:
FACE OF DANGER by Valerie Hansen
THE SOLDIER’S NEWFOUND FAMILY by Kathryn Springer
I'm not 100% sure where I will go from here. I have a bunch of books checked out, plus KU, so I just have to choose.
I just found out that one of the libraries that I use is going to severely limit hoopla starting in February. All along hoopla books have been pretty much the same from all libraries, but I noticed a difference when Kim couldn't get some of the new books that I can get. The library here is going to only do the more inexpensive books (they said each check out on hoopla cost them between .89 and about $5). They didn't change our limit, just removing a lot of books from the selection. They said they would start purchasing more for libby. They only have about 650 Christian Fiction libby books right now and one of the other libraries has 5700. The other library that I have hoopla with hasn't limited their assortment, or changed our checkouts limits, but they have a quota per day. When that is reached, there are no more borrows for the day. Sometimes you have to get there fairly early to check out books.0 -
Wow, I didn't know that. I get 5 books a month and use them up usually by the middle of the month. Our Libby has only the books that our library has and our library rarely has the newer books. I can get quite a few LI books from the library though, but I don't usually read those because I have so many that I already need to read. I have a book on a wait list and it may be six to eight months before it will be my turn! LOL!
Almost done with BORDEN OF YALE so I went ahead and put it on this months Read list.
I did start and finish a novelette by Danielle Grandinetti - FIRE AND WATER. It was very good and a quick read. I got it free through Book Funnel.
I'm still reading FALCON DAGGER but it's very different than the first two and I think the characters in this one were in the second book but after I quit reading, so I have no idea what is going on!
I'm having trouble getting into REFUGE FOR THE ACHAEOLOGIST by Danielle Grandinetti. This is the second book in this series which all take place in a small town on Lake Michigan in the 1930's.
Still working on LEGACY OF ROSES. I never have trouble with this author's stories, but I'm struggling through this one!

Current: WHEN THE AVALANCHE ROARED by Lauralee Bliss. This is a novel about a huge avalanche in Wellington, Washington in 1910. It's good, but I'm sure it's going to get tense when the avalanche actually happens - pretty soon, I'm sure.
Right now, I am able to check out 38 books a month on hoopla. Bill has a library card that I use for 15, I have one for 15, and then the one that is cutting back their selection is for 8.

Amazing! I'd be happy with 8-10, then I wouldn't have to wait for the next month.0

I am really enjoying CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY by Ann Swindell. Several people on the CF facebook page that I follow were calling it one of the best of 2024. It wasn't available on any of my library applications until this week. It takes place in a fictional country in Europe, and a Queen ran off leaving a short note during WW1 era. A doctoral candidate from the states is doing her dissertation on the queen, so is working in the castle's library on a residency.
I will probably start THE HUNTED HEIR by Jayna Breigh. This one just released on Tuesday and I had heard so many great things from people that were advance readers. I could get one library to order it, but it isn't an easy application to get to read to me. I can't wait to read it, though. I will either start this afternoon or tomorrow.

Ooo, my Hoopla has the audio version of the first one, so I borrowed it! Thanks.
It also has THE HUNTED HEIR, but it's an e-book, I may wait until the audio version comes out, but it's on my favorites' list.
I'm reading WIZARD AWAKENED by Brittany Fichter. She's one of my favorite authors but this one isn't my favorite by her. She's following what quite a few authors are now doing, and I'm sure for those who like this kind of stuff it's good, but I don't like stories with vampires and werewolves even when they are in the background!
BY CANOE AND DOGTRAIN a story about bringing the Gospel to the Canadian Indians. I did finish BORDEN of Yale. I think I would have been able to follow it better if I had read it rather than listened to it because I got lost at times as to who was narrating parts of the story.
Still working on FALCON DAGGER. I finished THE RED COAT by Pegg Thomas, an easy and quick read, the second book in this early American series.
Still working on REFUGE FOR THE ARCHAEOLOGIST by Danielle Grandinetti. The second book in this 1930's Lake Michigan town.
Still working on LEGACY OF ROSES by Melanie Cellier, another favorite of mine, but this one is a struggle.

I finished the third book in the Irene Hannon series: THE UNEXPECTED GIFT.
Downloaded and started reading GUARDING THE MOUNTAIN MAN'S SECRET by Misty M. Beller.0 -
I really need to get back to Misty Beller's books. I always enjoy Irene Hannon. Several of her books are written in areas where I worked for years in St Louis. That's always fun.
I am currently reading THE HUNTED HEIR by Jayna Breigh. This is in an inconvenient library application, but I can get it to read to me one chapter at a time. I haven't worked on it today. It has been a choppy day. My reading from that application just wasn't going to work, so I have worked on a couple of other things.
Reading: THE KNITTING CLUB by Andie Young. I saw someone recommend this book and I'm really enjoying it. It is about a 20 yr old woman that has had a really rough start on her life, a woman going through a divorce, and an older woman. They are getting together and knitting socks to send to servicemen. I'm enjoying it. it is on KU.
I read SABOTAGE AT CEDAR CREEK by Janice Thompson. This is a cozy mystery, the second in a series. One of the "characters" is a red pickup. It was the main story in book one.0 -
I love when that happens, an inanimate object becoming a part of the story!
I'm re-listening to the missionary bio of PAUL BRAND, he was mentioned in the last one I read about a woman who starts a hospital for women in India; Paul Brand is a doctor that comes to India and works with helping lepers. I'm also still reading the bio about missionaries to the Canadian Indians. Not as easy a read just because I often lose focus.
I'm also still reading the fantasies I was reading as well as the Pegg Thomas books I am reading.0 -
Current:
WHEN STARS LIGHT THE SKY by Elizabeth Camden. This is really good. A WW1 book about a German girl that came to the US with her parents. She befriended a wealthy man and his wife and they helped her in her education. They became the US Ambassadors to Germany pre-WW1 and took her with them as his personal secretary. Now the war is starting and ...... It is really good. I'm about a third through it.
THE VETERAN’S VALENTINE HELPER by Lee Tobin McClain. This is a Love Inspired and a light fun read.
I finally finished THE HUNTED HEIR by Jayna Breigh. I had an easy, no appointment day, so I was able to get through the book. It was very good, but I hate reading/listening through that application. I don't mind their audiobooks, but that one isn't available on audio at this time.

I need to use that ... It's really good. I usually just say, You gotta read it to see what happens. I like yours better!
I'm listening to: PAUL BRAND missionary bio. I read a bio about the India doctor who started a woman's hospital and trained Indian women to be nurses and doctors. Paul was mentioned in her bio, and she in his!
WIZARD AWAKENED, parts of this I like and parts not so much. It's by an author I really like and this is her delving into urban fantasy which is really popular right now. Just don't like vampires and werewolf stuff. I probably won't finish this one and skip the rest of the series, just not my thing!
RAVEN HEART by Celeste Baxendell - I like her stuff, and I liked the prequel and book 1 of this series, but not the rest. I'll read a bit more in this one and see where it goes.
FALCON DAGGER by Azalea Dabill - struggling with this one too. I didn't finish book two because of a cuss word, so the direction book 3 has taken is confusing to me.
I'm still working on LEGACY OF ROSES and REFUGE FOR THE ARCHAEOLOGIST.
I finished the last book in A MOST CONVENIENT MARRIAGE anthology. Just Eh!
Hoopla: CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY by Ann Swindell. The main character has some issues with self-confidence, but other than that, so far it is good.
TO STAND IN THE BREACH by Danielle Grandinetti - will start this one tonight.
0 -
Just finished UNFORGETTABLE COWBOY by Debra Clopton0
-
The main character in CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY by Ann Swindell definitely has problems with self-confidence. That is a definite!
I am listening to an anthology with 4 cozy mysteries set in bookstores: Secrets Between The Shelves. I enjoyed book one and book two, then fell asleep and woke up on book 4. I had to go back to find chapter 2 in book 3! Oh well, nice nap, anyway.
I finished:
WHEN STARS LIGHT THE SKY by Elizabeth Camden (WW1) - this was really good! I gave it 5*
WILDFLOWERS FROM WINTER by Katie Ganshert - This is a really good women's fiction. It was KU and probably something that Cindy would enjoy. The only reason I checked it out is that I was trying to fill in Iowa on my read through the states chart. There is another in the series, so I checked it out when I finished this one.

I started THE SNOWMAN'S SWEETHEART by Shanna Hatfield, but also downloaded WILDFLOWERS FROM WINTER. (Thank you, Connie!)0
-
Cindy - I hope that you enjoy it.
Current:
MIDNIGHT ON THE SCOTTISH SHORE by Sarah Sundin (WW2)
GUNPOWDER TEA by Margaret Brownley (hist)0 -
I'm still working on the ones that I mentioned earlier!0
-
I am reading a series of Love Inspired Suspense books by Elizabeth Goddard.0
-
I like Elizabeth Goddard.0
-
I finished WILDFLOWERS FROM WINTER by Katie Ganshert. (You were right, Connie. I agree it was really good.) I started the next one - WISHING ON WILLOWS.0
-
I started a re-listen of another missionary bio - KLAUS-DIETER JOHN, a missionary to South America. He is contemplating and working towards staying in Shell.
I finished MAIL ORDER CARPENTER by Kathryn LaBlanc. A quick so-so read.
I finished WIZARD AWAKENED (I actually skipped to the end) - this one is probably a 3, just not my type of story.
Still working on the others.

Right now I am listening to MISTLETOE SECRETS by Richard Paul Evans. This is my Utah read.
I am also reading CANDY CANE WISHES by Leah Atwood - my Maryland read.
I am hoping to have them done by the end of the month. I have several to go, so it may not happen with other reads that are coming up from the library.
I finished:
DEEDS OF THE DECEITFUL by Ellery Adams by Tina Radcliffe
METHODS OF MALICE by Ellery Adams and Tina Radcliffe
These are cozy mysteries, part of the Hope Street Church series. The series is about a Bible study group, filled with scripture, but not not Christian fiction. These two books do show Christian on Amazon, but I'm sure it is because of Tina Radcliffe. There was one that was only by Ellery Adams that had a bit of language and a bit too much alcohol than I was comfortable with. The rest (8 books) have been good - if you like cozy mysteries.

Reading:
VACATION FRIENDS by Christy Barritt. I love her books, but can't keep up with all of them! This is one of her newer ones, and set in Hawaii...for my read through the states. It starts with a murder and a lady trying to save the man. I think it would actually be classified more as "thriller". It's very good. It goes a couple of directions and I am looking forward to seeing all of it come together.

I've read some more in TO STAND IN THE BREACH by Danielle Grandinetti, and CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY by Ann Swindell. Surprisingly, neither is a fantasy!0
-
As always with Christy Barritt's book, VACATION FRIENDS was very good.
Current:
YARNED AND DANGEROUS by Sadie Hartwell - is basically a clean read, but does have just a tad bit of language. It is one character and I am almost done with the book. There have been three conversations with a little language. I needed a Connecticut book, and wasn't coming up with a Christian fiction.
COUNTRY WEDDING by Carolyn Aarsen - this is an audiobook. It is book 4 in the series. I have listened to books 1, 2 and 4. Why didn't the library have book 3? It doesn't leave a gap, so I may go back and pick up the ebook on KU at another time.

I'm reading: TO STAND IN THE BREACH by Danielle Grandinetti. A 1930's story that takes place in dairy county. She's a vet, he's a cop. She's hiding from an uncle who wants her inheritance which she knows nothing about.
CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY by Ann Swindell - boy, this gals insecurities really overtake the story. This isn't an enjoyable read for me, I feel like I'm slogging through it just to find the answer to what happened to the Queen.
I downloaded the fifth book in a fantasy series I've been waiting Hoopla to get, and they got it: VALLEY OF DRAGONS by Christina Baehr.
I am re-reading PEACE WEAVER by Everly Haywood. I finally have more in the series so I am going back to get back into the flow of the story.
Still struggling through FALCON DAGGER and probably won't finish it, it just isn't the same story without know what happened for the last half of book two (had to quit because of a cuss word) and none of the characters in the first 1 and a half are major players in the last one.
THE ORPHAN'S SECRET DESTINY by Arabella Larkspur - so far it's been pretty good. A maid befriends the daughter of the house and they find secret papers that lead them to believe that the master of the house had a daughter out of wedlock before her friend was born!

Kim - it doesn't sound like you are loving CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY by Ann Swindell. I actually loved the fact that she was so insecure in anything except her intelligence. Different strokes.
I am reading QUEEN OF HEARTS by Heather Day Gilbert. This is considered a psychological thriller. It's very good, about a best selling author that is on the Autism spectrum. It is very good...my West Virginia read. I should finish in an hour or so.
I am getting ready to read a Pamela Griffin book that is set in Vermont. I had a lot of problems finding a book that I hadn't read, and that was either available through the library or KU. I found some "clean" fiction but really wanted to keep it in the Christian genre...especially after the language issue in the last "clean" book that I read. Pamela has a lot of out of print books that are available through Internet Archives (Open Library), so DEAR GRANNY is my book of choice. This program works fairly well with it's audio reader in the application.
Editing to add:
WooHoo - on my last state. Now, I want to get a Island in the Caribbean, Mexico, Australia (that's easy), and Central or South America. If you have any ideas....please let me know! My goal was to finish my challenges by the end of January (except one book that wasn't available until Jan 28, and my library didn't get it until the 31st) and the one that is reading a book released in May, 2025. Then, I wanted to read the states by the end of February. Of course, my January reading got a lot of those.0 -
I finished WISHING ON WILLOWS by Katie Ganshert and enjoyed this new-to-me author, so I searched to see if there were other KU books by her I could download. I found A BROKEN KIND OF BEAUTIFUL and just finished that. Another good read. AND I just downloaded another one by her: THE FABRICATION OF EDEN PRUITT: The Eden Pruitt Series, Book 10
-
I haven't gotten to WISHING ON WILLOWS. I have read several NO ONE EVER ASKED, LIFE AFTER, and THE ART OF LOSING YOURSELF. I have also read a couple of anthologies that had books by her. I need to catch up.
I just finished THE PERFECT ROM-COM by Melissa Ferguson. It was a cute book. I am just a few pages away from finishing LOVE ON ASSIGNMENT by Cara Lynn James. It is my Rhode Island book. I had previously read book 1 and there is one more, but I am hesitant to read it. It is really hard to find Rhode Island books, so I keep thinking that I should save it for next year.

Connie, I actually am loving the story, I think it's the reader that I don't like, she uses such a whiny voice and that irritates me. Every time our main character speaks, the reader makes it sound like she's about to cry. I am loving that it has such a huge Christian message in it. Whenever she finds a verse in the Bible that speaks to her need I just sit there and smile. I love her friend and sister who don't cut her any slack! I got QUEEN OF HEARTS when it was on sale, but am a little bit afraid of reading it - when I hear psychological thriller I know it's going to be scary! LOL! I realized that "clean" often just means "no overt sexual content" so I started putting "no bad language" in my reviews as well as "no overt sexual content" but also warning of a "lustful" story, characters that can't keep their eyes or hands or minds to themselves.
One of the missionary bios I read has the missionary traveling all over the Solomon Islands.
I looked up Island, Connie, and came up with these: https://amazon.com/Wild-Ocean-Caribbean-Adventure-Thriller-; https://amazon.com/Summer-Island-Novel-Kristin-Hannah-ebook/dp/B000FC1KKCebook/dp/B07NS9DP2G; https://www.amazon.com/Canary-Island-Song-Robin-Jones-ebook/dp/B004IK9C70;
Cami Checketts has a series that takes place on an island but I don't know where it is - STEELE FAMILY ROMANCES
You've probably already found one, but I thought I'd look anyway. I used 'Christian fiction' in my search but not sure Kristin Hannah is a Christian fiction author and I haven't heard of the first author.
I finished one of the fantasies I was reading PEACEWEAVER, it's a re-read, now to find the next book in the series! I read quite a bit in CHRISTMAS IN THE CASTLE LIBRARY last night and am almost to the end. I have really liked from the middle onward!
