Happy Monday. Our dry, sunny, warm weather continues so George and I headed out early for our walk on the moors. Few dog walkers about and certainly none I knew so after nearly an hour and George slowing down I drove us home. Later in the morning I drove to Debbie the groomer’s home to visit her mother while she was out working. We had a lovely 2 hour chat about all sorts until I sensed she was tiring so I brought George home. I have been gardening and watering a few pots but sadly still no sign of planted beans sprouting. I did go back to the display of plants for sale in the next village but what few had been there must have been sold. At some point tomorrow I will buy another packet from a store and try one last time.
Time to bring washing in that dried outside, then prepare an evening meal. I hope everyone is well.

Hello a stormy wet and windy day. Felt cold all day. I took some mail to the post office early this morning as I didn’t want to leave it in our wet outgoing box.
Spent the rest of the day puttering around. I now have my list of birthday cards needed by date for the remainder of the year. Some great Zoom classes today and then a friend I hadn’t spoken to for months called and several hours evaporated.
Adjusted the water heater again. I think I may have set it at a good balance that won’t burn me but will make for a delightful shower.
Jackie, darn beans. I am sorry they are not growing. My beans got hit by hail today. Poor thngs.
Hope you are getting a good night’s rest.
Be safe everyone.

😀 Annie turned two years old yesterday. I gave her a new heavy chewing toy. Later we went to the pharmacy where they always have a dog cookie for her at the drive through. It wasn't until later that I realized that if I'd planned better I could have taken her to the bank drive through and Taco Time where they give biscuits to dogs.

After a short dog walk this morning Linda picked me up to drive to a coffee shop next to our local lake. We sat outside overlooking the water for nearly 3 hours sipping coffees and enjoying their fresh cake. It was warm and sunny so very relaxing. I had left George at home, although he wasn’t happy when I locked the door on my way out, so wasn’t too surprised when I got back to discover he had slipped through the cat flap into the garden at some point. He was extra pleased to see me! We expect some rain in the morning so I strimmed the footpath from the parking area to my cottage because the wild flowers were beginning to take over and I knew would be difficult to walk over if they got wet. I have cleared the greenhouse to make room for the large tomato and cucumber pots so am in charge, I think!
Housework tomorrow!!

Hello. We received 5+ inches of rain yesterday and overnight. My rain gauge is 5” and it was full to the brim. Also overnight I woke up to a dripping sound. It seemed to be in a wall of my bedroom. I couldn’t go back to sleep. I was awake worrying about it for about 3 hours. 👀
Also the sump pump started to run regularly. What a night. Sleep was elusive.I checked the basement for water when I got up and luckily I didn’t find any. I washed some clothes, went outside to check on the water discharge from the sump pump and got yesterday’s mail. It was really damp!
I called my handyman to get the contact info for a guy who did a little roof fix for me once. He gave it to me and I called. A very nice person who listened to me describe what was going on. And he drove by this afternoon and called me later. He is sure he knows what needs to be fixed and his most experienced guy will come and fix it in the next week or so. The owner has had a hip replacement and stays off of very tall roofs. They are also going to give me an estimate for replacing the roof. It is 19 years old. We will see what happens. They are pricing the higher grade hail resistant shingles.
So interesting right? Ha-ha
Barbie, happy belated birthday to Annie. The treats sound like a good gift.Jackie, your time at the coffee shop sounds quite interesting. I would love to do that. Take care. I love that the wild flowers were taking over. 🙃 Mor particularly great as it caused you more work
Be safe everyone. Hoping for warmer days with sunshine again. I am sure we will but it seems like we lost spring.Lin 🙋🏼♀️

It rained last night and early this morning so everything was fresh when I went for a walk with George but he wasn’t inclined to go far. I didn’t carry out half the chores intended and when the skies cleared I went back to my greenhouse and continued to pot the cucumber and tomato plants. Really nothing exciting, just pottering!! 🙃😉 It looks as if our weather will change and become unsettled by the weekend but it has been a terrific month up to now.
Wow Lin, replacing your roof after just 19 years. Is that normal? Shingles are probably not as solid as roof slate or tiles, right? If rainfall of 5” is going to become the norm I can understand you want a secure roof! Lots for you to have to worry about so I am so sorry. The posh cat teapot is hilarious!
Happy birthday Annie!Take care and stay safe.

Hello, another chilly, windy day but only partly cloudy. It is sunny now. I received a call today and the roofing company is working on another project just a few miles from me and they said they would try to slip away and come over here with a tall ladder to see exactly what needs to be fixed. I would be thrilled if they could finish it tomorrow. Who know what they will find.
Jackie, asphalt shingles must be much less durable than your roofing materials. They sell different types of shingles, some are 15 year shingles, some 20, some 25. At least that’s how they did it in the old days. My shingles are grade 3 and were sold as a 25 year shingles I am requesting a bid for grade 4 shingles which can withstand larger hail. The current ones may have a bit of useful life left. They will also let me know what they think about that.
Some days we don’t get to many chores. And I think that’s okay. I planted a few more beans this afternoon. That was enjoyable.
I did a number of Zoom exercise classes and spoke with a friend about fund raising for a church repair project. I think the contractor is expected in early June.
Wishing everyone good days.

😀 Since my day includes more than two hours of riding my exercise bike and more than two hours walking with dogs or alone or with a friend and going to a meeting on Zoom for more than an hour, there's not much time for working in the yard. Today I washed another section of the fence (two down and nine to go) and pulled five gallons of weeds. I've noticed that Annie has more times of being calm and mellow along with her crazed puppy behavior. Bessie who was the quiet dog has now started to bark at people walking by. She learned that from Annie.
😀 Lin, glad you got your immediate roof problem fixed. I hope you get as good a job on your roof as we got on ours.
😀 Jackie, your planting sounds great. My sunflower seeds are starting to sprout as are the poppies but no sign yet of the pumpkins or the nasturtiums. It has been less than two weeks since I planted them My fields of iris look beautiful.

lost my long post just as I finished typing!
Barbie, I have found Nasturtium seedlings popping up everywhere, probably because we had such a mild Winter. I love them but they do take over!Lin, thanks for explaining your roof asphalt. Our Cornish slate roofing is definitely more sturdy but costs a fortune to repair. I had to replace mine about 30 years ago but it was original from when the cottage was built mid 1800’s and some original slates were out back!
sorry, can’t go back over everything else. It was too long!

Hi, still cold here. It was about 64 in my house this morning but I am still trying to not switch on the furnace again. I wore 2 sweatshirts indoors today which helped. And the exercise classes kept me warm.
On and off rain is expected each day over the long weekend.
I have some organizing to do for several short classes I signed up for—online of course. One is 5 classes with 1 per day and the other is a one day class with 4 sessions.
Shouldn’t take too long to print and organize the materials into binders.
I also want to start sorting through my supplies to decide on my Christmas/Holiday card for this year. It takes me forever to design the card and pick out paper and ink colors. I hope to just use things I have as the price of most supplies is already going up. One company that I purchase much of my paper just announced a price increase which will be in place next week.
A number of small companies are going out of business. I didn’t even look at what they had left to sell on deep discount. Some large companies are having their usual Memorial weekend sales. I may find later on that it was foolish not to be more prepared as items may become scarce as well as quite expensive.
Jackie, I cannot believe the longevity of your house roofs. Amazing. Our homes are not built to last that long. At least not without repeated major renovations and repairs but it is more likely the homes are bulldozed and replaced.
Barbie, a 5 gallon container of weeds is a lot of work! I hope the rest of your seeds sprout soon.
Now I am pining for nasturtiums! 🤭
Be safe all.Lin 🙋🏼♀️

Happy Saturday. It was warmer here today. Yippee!
It was a day of printing and organizing binders and looking over techniques. I found one interesting thing and some did order a set of dies this afternoon. I do not know if that will be the Christmas card focal point but I do like the die, it is currently available and the shipping wasn’t too costly.
Zoom classes of course and a conversation with my neighbors when I went to get my mail. They normally do not care to speak so I was surprised.
I hope everyone had a good day.Be safe.

😀 This morning I put labels on some of my fancy iris so when it's time to thin them, I'll know what color they are. Two of my neighbours asked for iris when I thin them out in September so I want to be able to share the colours they want. I'll thin more than just those but the others will be for me and it won't matter what colour they are when I put them somewhere else in my yard.
😀 Chicken soup is simmering on the stove—-chicken bought at Costco yesterday and veggies and broth were part of my curbside pickup at QFC this morning. This pot will make about a dozen meals for me. I'll freeze it Mason jars.
😀 Lunch is a pbj with Adams natural peanut butter, apricot jam, and Dave's Killer bread with a few grape tomatoes on the side. Yum.
😀 I've been watching Svalbard videos on YouTube— a simple life.

A very quiet weekend of the usual gardening and some housework. A cold wind has been blowing on the moors but at least George enjoys it even if I have to wrap up like it’s Winter.
A cousin phoned with sad news that his sister, my cousin Debbie, is in hospital, terminally ill with an aggressive lung cancer. She lives the other side of the country so no chance of visiting but the plan is for her to go to a friend’s home to be cared for. That friend is a nurse and an extremely capable person so I will get her phone number and keep in touch with them.I watched a video this evening about vegetables that are not good to eat as we get older. He talked a lot about Nightshades like potatoes and tomatoes that cause bloating and joint pain. I can live without potatoes but now I’ve so many tomato plants in my greenhouse I will have to put up with the consequences!
Hello Sandy if you are home. Looking forward to hearing all about your cruise.
Time for my bed.

Hello, a day of Zoom classes, a long long telephone call with a friend, church service and I did water my lettuce and the bean seed that I planted that has not sprouted yet.
Tomorrow I need to do some laundry, bake sweet potatoes, and may cook some quinoa.
Jackie, yes, I was told that nightshades are unhealthy for people with certain allergies and those with arthritis. I don’t know if it is true but I did give up white potatoes and switched to my beloved purple sweet potatoes. No more fresh tomatoes for me but I do use some sauces with tomatoes in them and once in a while some canned tomatoes or tomato paste. I will have a potato chip once in a while but not often.
I used to live on baked potatoes. What a change!
Barbie that is very considerate of you to label your Iris so people can choose their colors when you thin them later on. I was always happy just to get some rhizomes. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Well, nothing much of interest.
Be safe.

Happy Monday/Memorial Day. I have been doing laundry and trying to figure out how to make a video to post on Facebook. It is already two in the afternoon and I am still not showered. We had a wonderful time on our cruise but it is exhausting. We did three excursions, sat by the pool, watched a show every night, played trivia and games. The weather was perfect and we had so much fun.
Cheryl and I had a balcony room so my daughter and son would join us on the balcony to watch the ocean. I must have walked over 10k steps everyday and one day 17k. We were on the back of the ship and a lot of activities were at the front of the ship, plus all the walking during the excursions.I will be back tomorrow after I get some rest.

Welcome home Sandy. A lovely photo! 😍
It is a Bank holiday in England too. We used to call it Whitsun after Whit Sunday but Christian breaks seem to get cancelled and now it is a Spring bank holiday! Cold and showery weather has arrived so no gardening, just a relaxing day because I decided the indoor projects can wait. I prepared a tasty pesto chicken dish and watched another gardening programme about designs to combat climate change, although little sign of that today!
Lin, I do remember the purple sweet potatoes when I lived in Toronto but here we only seem to get the slightly orange ones. I was going to look into growing my own but the slips, as they call the starter sections, are rare. I only eat wholewheat pasta and brown rice that are less starchy but sometimes do crave potatoes roasted in beef dripping. As you say, what a change!
Midnight has crept up on me so time for bed. 🥱😴

Happy Tuesday! I didn't have to sit today after all so I am meeting friends for dinner. Marisa and I are trying to get the surprise birthday party for her mother together asap as the invitations have to go out by Friday. I don't want to make decisions by myself so I told her to call the place and ask her questions. Hopefully we get this done today.
I slept in until almost 9:30 today, I feel wonderful. I was so tired and grateful I didn't have to get up at 6:30 to sit. I will be doing that tomorrow and Thursday but since kids will be in school I can always nap.
Good to be home but I am going to Florida with Lisa June 8 because I didn't want her driving with the 3 kids by herself. I will stay a few days and fly home. She will drive home with her parents when she is ready.
Have a great day.

It rained all day but I managed to get George out for 15 minutes, then he decided he would rather be home because we were splashing through deep puddles. Serves me right for complaining about my garden being so dry after a month of sunshine! It is a lot cooler too so I was tempted to light the wood burner but decided to wear an extra jacket instead! I wanted to watch King Charles open the Canadian parliament and managed to find their broadcast company on YouTube so that was my afternoon organised. Ottawa looked green and attractive in the sunshine with lots of trees and no high rise buildings.
When Charmaine stayed with me recently she told me about natural supplements she takes daily, as well as drinking warm water with lemon and turmeric, so I’m looking at trying similar myself. It should help my digestive system that sometimes struggles because I have a hernia. Luckily I like spicy flavours!
From what I’ve been reading Lin, the red and purple sweet potatoes are both good for you and I expect if I lived in a city I could find some but food supplies in my rural area don’t include what would be called exotic!
Time for bed. 🥱😴

Hello! It has been chilly and also periods of drizzle. Later this week it is suppose to warm up. Everyone seems to be looking forward to more summer like weather.
Today I did get to the bank to discuss a CD that matured over the weekend. I decided I would not renew it at this paint. I had the money moved to my savings account and I can use some for a new roof or other unexpected expenses. Now I don’t have to be concerned with penalties for early withdrawal.
I also stopped by Trader Joe’s to pick up a few things. I was surprised that the store wasn’t at all busy.
Sandy, glad you got some sleep. Wonderful. Happy party planning.

by Anthony Horowitz The book is great and it's been made into a TV series (I think on PBS Masterpiece).🌞 Warm today….lots of people walking early. I plan to take my tomato plant out of the container and plant it in the raised bed.

Happy Wednesday! Woke up at 5:30 and couldn't fall back to sleep even though my alarm was set for 6:30. Got to Rob's about 7:30 so he could leave for his new job and then drove the kids to school at 9 because it was raining. I took a short nap and now playing catch up on my computer. The sun seems to be peeking out but I still have the dogs inside since they are out most of the time. They are snoozing peacefully. I will be back tomorrow and Rob works from home Friday. The kids last day is tomorrow and Lisa's last day is Friday. We will leave for Florida June 8th and I will fly home June 14th so I can take my son out for dinner Father's Day. Lisa will drive home with her parents two weeks later. Busy summer.
Hoping the weather warms up over the weekend so I can go to pool. It is only 56 F today.
Have a good day.

After a cool, windy start yesterday when I took George for a long walk on the moors, it brightened up so I decided the jungle that had grown overnight needed to be cut back. All that rain on Tuesday had everything sitting up! I worked for most of the day, then, just before sunset, lit a fire in the incinerator.
So far today my plans keep changing because when I returned home from an early trip to the supermarket I found a car recovery vehicle across our parking area because a camper van in my neighbours’ space had broken down. Apparently the visitors were about to drive to the coast but the engine had died! I had planned to walk George then arrange to visit Sheila who had a migraine so wanted me to take her to the local shop. I took George on to the moors to begin Plan A but when we returned they told me they were now waiting for a flatbed truck that would block our exit so my car is now garaged to keep it out of the way. No idea when it might arrive so I updated Sheila with Plan B which was to drive over once visitors and vehicles are gone but she now thinks that after taking a couple of painkillers she can drive herself to the shop! I’ve finally enjoyed a fresh brew of coffee!
That lemon tea is very appropriate Lin for my early morning hot water and slice of lemon. I’ve also ordered the Turmeric in tablet form and am expecting miracles! 😄😗
Wow Sandy, it really is all go for you!
I gather Magpie Murders is one of a trilogy Barbie so lots more reading for you to enjoy.
It is warm and muggy today so my jungle is steaming but I will continue to cut back some of the wayward branches.
Happy Thursday. Stay safe.

😀 Tomato plant looks happy in the raised bed. It had gotten taller in the pot and when I transplanted it I could see that the roots needed room to expand. I put together the fancy cage to keep it supported.
😀 It took me an hour to change the sheets with Annie helping. This time she didn't grab and anything, she just wanted to lie down and play with toys in the middle of the bed.
😀 My walking friend who is an avid gardener has a back yard on a slope with an abundance of plants chosen specially over the years. She just decided to get a quote for help maintaining it because of all the walking up and down the incline and having to work on the incline surface. She has had bouts of dizziness and decided it was time for a change. She is 81. There are parts of her yard that are flat so she'll still have areas she can care for herself.
😀 I got a new toy for Annie that is soft but has no stuffing. She likes it. I had a squeaker but it stopped working after the first day.
🌞 It was very warm yesterday then drizzled overnight and the temps dropped which is a good thing because I have and 11AM appointment with the eye doctor and will have to leave Annie in the car.

Happy Thursday! Had a better night's sleep and got here at 7:30. Got the kids off to school, one dog in and one dog out both napping. I will shower here today as I didn't have time at home yesterday or today. Today is last day of school for kids. Lisa is taking a half day off for some activities at the school including a clap off of the kids who are leaving this school to go to middle school. Robby is one of them. I will be going with Lisa to clap for Robby. Hard to believe they are growing so fast.
Barbie, good luck at the dentist with Annie. She seems to be used to being in the car and doesn't cause any damage.
Jackie, it is terrible when you want to go somewhere and can't get out of your garage. Patience is needed. I cannot put any flowers pots on my balcony yet as they are supposed to be painting them. My patio furniture is in my kitchen and my hummingbird feeder is on a light attached to my balcony. I just hope he can find it and doesn't think I ghosted him.
Lin, I hope you got the rest you needed. I hate being tired and require at least 7 hours of sleep.
Have a good one.

Hello friends. It is warming up! Could actually be hot Friday and Saturday. 👀
It was my day to wash towels. I like a medium load of towels. They wash relatively quickly and also go through the dryer in no time. Easy to fold and put away.
I did some Zoom classes. I have one more later on but I may skip it.
Finally, I got my roof estimate. Not as bad as I had feared although there are items, that if needed, will be charged extra by the hour plus materials. But you cannot know what needs to be done until the old shingles and felt are torn off. I did talk to my handyman and he said there is always a possibility that some plywood would need to be replaced. I would imagine any company would charge extra for that.
I sent a reply with some additional questions.
Sandy, I am glad you got some rest (I did too). Busy day with dogs and kiddos. ❤️❤️
Barbie, how did your appointment with eye doctor go? Hope there were no unexpected surprises. The “Magpie Murders”and “Moonflower Murders” are full of twists and turns. PBS showed both series on Masterpiece Mysteries. Oh and I am glad your tomato plant looks happy. I did cut lettuce today. It is nice that lettuce will grow in a relatively small area in a raised planter or container. I think my green beans are going to bud soon. It’s the small things that are so enjoyable.
Jackie, I am so sorry to hear that you are trapped once again. Good grief! Please let me know if turmeric tablets provide miracles! Take care and I hope you are free to drive your car at will.
Wishing everyone well.

👓️👀 Yesterday was my regular visit to the eye doctor (last time was two years ago). I had to work at not being stressed because eye doctors have been predicting cataract surgery in " a few years" since 2003 and right now I have no idea how to handle needing a ride and needing someone to watch Annie. It turned out fine. The weather cooled off so Annie was safe in the car in the parking lot midday. The eye doctor was great and said that it would still be " a few years" before I'd need cataract surgery. She gave me a new prescription for glasses and said that part of my troubles seeing had to do with some clouding of my current lenses. I looked at all the frames and decided that the decision fatigue was too much and ordered a new pair of glasses with frames identical to the ones I have now. Maybe next year, I'll pick out something wild and crazy. The whole adventure cost about $400 which was fine with me.
😀 Sandy, anyone would be tired with the schedule you keep.
😀 Lin, I don't eat enough lettuce to want to grow it, but my walking friend grows lettuce in a raised bed just outside her kitchen door to the yard and raves about popping out to pick lettuce for her salad. Good luck with your roof and hope that there are no expensive surprises.
😀 Jackie, I don't go out often but it would make me crazy if my drive were blocked and I couldn't go.

Happy Friday! Laundry is started and when done I have some errands to run. We are very close on sending the invites for the surprise party, just waiting for Marisa to respond to my texts. I will be glad when it is all settled and I can concentrate on other things. Fun day for the kiddos with the last day of school. Lisa took a half day and we watched the egg drop for the 5th graders, including Robby, who are moving on to middle school. The fire department came and raised their ladder and then dropped eggs the kids had made with protection from breaking. Only 4 made it without breaking but it was still fun. We went back for dismissal and the 5th graders walked in a circle while the families clapped for them. I finally left around 5:15 to stop at the store for a few groceries and got home around 6:30. Rob is working from home today and Lisa will be available next week as Monday is her last day. We leave for Florida on the 8th or 9th depending on if she has a volleyball game. This might be my busiest summer ever.
Barbie, glad all went well with the eye doctor. I had cataract surgery years ago and loved it since I didn't need reading glasses after it was done. I did have special lenses put in but of course now with my macular I need them again and they are annoying since I have three different pairs. One for reading, distance and computer. I tried trifocals but couldn't get used to them.
Lin, good luck with your roof. There is always something when you own your own home. We finally are warming up also which will make a lot of people happy so they can go to the pool including me.
Have a good and safe day my friends,
