  • Thanks everyone. Today I was teleworking so I guzzled a few extra glasses of water and after lunch (leftover spaghetti and tortellini) I did notice that the BP climbed a bit. I took myself out and treated myself to a Five Guys Little Cheeseburger and split an order of fries with my husband. Probably the 'junkiest' meal…
  • OP, I think we all get caught up in unfair feelings. Right now, my feet are just literally falling apart. It's genetics really. There's not much I can do. It's to the point that I haven't been able to really exercise for a year (I supposed I could do rowing). Anyway, I have those days where I get into a real pity party…
  • Thanks, that's what I'm looking for! It's hard to know what to do "food wise." Plenty of people on these boards are doing around 1500 calories a day and feeling great (or so I read). I oldish, sedentary, etc. and, really, 1500 calories should be a reasonable amount, but I guess everyone is different. What I will say is…
  • I don't have a thyroid gland either. Lost mine at age 30 because of thyroid cancer. I've been lucky that my meds were stable for a very long time (usually at .137 for 20 years). When I went through menopause, my dose needed fairly drastic lowering (I'm down to about .100 mcg daily). Thyroid hormone binds to circulating…
  • Still waiting for something like that to happen to me! So far, it's only happened at a buffet. :p

  • For me, this will be a lifelong struggle. I'm "off" the sweets right now. The only way off them was to get them out of the house. I just can't have them there. I will totally binge. Earlier this year, I was binging on Jelly Belly jellybeans. I thought they'd be good at 4 calories each. I'd count off a small portion. But I…

  • I'm the same way. Especially when I'm first starting out. So all the things that I know I binge on: Cakes, cookies, Ben & Jerry's ice cream, Jelly Belly jellybeans, had to go out of the house. For me, they are OFF limits. I know that some will disagree that food should be off limits, but I know they will set me off on a…

  • This is what he says in the link that I posted. And calorie counting is a complete waste of time. Not all calories are equal, meaning we don’t absorb all the energy from some foods such as nuts and vegetables, and weight loss is not as simple as calories in versus calories out. This, of course, was from another article.…
  • My son had this issue in high school when he was on the cross country team. He basically had to give up running for most of the year and then when he returned to running, had to ramp up to long distances at a MUCH slower pace than what they were doing on the team. He does okay now but it was a combination of poor running…
  • I think "age" only matters in the context of muscle mass (which is related to activity in a way). When you were in high school, you likely had more muscle mass naturally than you do as a 31 year old. This means you burn less calories just sitting around than you did back then. But it's not a huge amount. It might equate to…
  • Of course not. I really get tired of all the irresponsible journalism and "fluff" handed out. How many people click on this kind of stuff and just give up? I know most people would never go on a further search to see what the guy really has to say and why he believes what he believes.
  • This is probably where the information comes from: https://sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/news-and-events/2019/05/06/dr-nick-fuller-5-reasons-diets-don-t-work-and-what-to-do-instead.html If I didn't have to pay for it, I might like reading his entire book so I could see the "science" behind what he says. I'm not ruling it…
  • I agree with this philosophy. Eating is a big part of my vacation. But when I'm being serious about my food, I'm going to be choosy. I love ice cream, but I can have that anytime. So, maybe I wouldn't consider it a "vacation speciality" unless it was something unique to the area. For instance, where I go to the beach, they…
  • I will chime in with the others to find an endocrinologist. That said, I had my thyroid removed about 25 years ago due to thyroid cancer. Back then, one of the treatments to fully take care of it all was to go EXTREMELY hypo in order to ablate the remainder of the gland. I did this three or four times. It's extremely hard…
  • I've cut out full-fat ice cream. It's one of my favorite things in life, but it's also a trigger food. And one serving doesn't cut it for me, it just leaves me sad. So I pretty much decided that I have to do without it and will only have it during special occasions or vacation or something like that. I also stay away from…
  • I just gotta know: where IS this place? How can anyone eat like that for 8 days. Is it just like ribs and potato salad every night?
  • I do think I am drinking enough. I don't log water, but I am drinking. It's funny because as the day wears on and I eat more, that muscle tiredness disappears. It went away after lunch today.
  • Nope, not low carb. Just trying to find the best "value" for 1450 calories a day. I tend to be a volume eater so I look for things that take up volume but are lower calorie.
  • I started out at around 162. During that time I was absolutely gorging myself really. So I wavered between 162 and 160 (I think some was water retention). So I started at 160 really (I think). I didn't lose anything for a week or so, and then it seemed to come off about a 1/2 pound every other day, then I'd stay the same,…
  • I actually go the other way. Start small and get bigger through the day. I find that my hunger is not as much earlier but by evening, that's when I want to eat. So it helps me to know that my dinner meal and snack are there to help with that. I couldn't do it the opposite way.
  • Youth is on your side! Just do it slowly. Your skin will adjust after time.
  • As everyone has said, just make an appointment with a gastroenterologist. Chronic diarrhea is not normal. I had it for 6 weeks earlier this year (every morning up through about 11AM). It did finally quit. I saw a GI, had a colonoscopy to get tested for microscopic colitis (mentioned above). I don't have it. I don't have…
  • I used to love The Firm DVDs. They were really good.
  • Oh I didn't mean that you absolutely wouldn't lose weight on the bike, but like walking, it's not a fierce "burner." For instance, I can do a lot of walking but I didn't get a good calorie burn until I did Couch to 5K. Just the act of jogging over walking made a noticeable difference for me. Any exercise that isn't upright…
  • I have a husband who has been active all his life. He's never been overweight. At 57, he runs, swims, bikes, has qualified in the Boston Marathon two times, done an Ironman, etc. You get the gist. He married the most unathletic, couch potato ever. We actually don't communicate about dieting/weight loss ever. Up until about…
  • Welcome to living in the D.C. area!! Although I have to say that there were a LOT of really good things on the buffet that made the price seem okay. It wasn't a simple eggs/pancakes/bacon brunch.
  • Good morning! So, got on the scale today expecting to see it go up due to water retention from the buffet foods. Suprisingly, I was down another 1/2 pound which was a nice surprise. So overall, this has been a more positive dining out experience with moderating my intake and managing the rest of the day.
