  • This is why I eat constantly throughout the day. I find that if I don't eat much during the day, i'm STARVING by the time I get home from work and want to binge. I will still save calories because I do like to eat bigger meals in the evening, but I will snack on things every 2 hours or so to keep myself from feeling those…
  • I used to use circuit training but adjust the calories just as a guestimate, based on the difficulty of the metcon, i.e. if it was more strength work than cardio (max cals on bike or rower, 400 m runs and box jumps, etc.). I had a friend that went with me too that was the same weight/height that wore a heart rate monitor…
  • I was about your weight (although 2 inches taller) and walking really stressed out my ankles knees and hips too. Take it slow, as others have suggested. I also went to my doctor who told me for every pound you lose, that's about 4-5 pounds of pressure off your joints, so it will get easier with time if you keep with it!
  • Not only is rest necessary physically but so important for your mental health. It sounds like you have a slightly unhealthy relationship with your eating habits & exercise. Relax - take a break every now and then and be kind to yourself. Be proud of how far you've come.
  • The internet, technology & social media make communication so different. You have no idea about tone of voice, body language, etc. some people just convey their thoughts more directly and with no fluff. I've learned this not only on social media but in corporate America too, with how people write emails. You can't over…
  • Do it! I learned so much in Crossfit and was so glad I did it. I'm doing powerlifting now, but wouldn't have started lifting at all if it weren't for crossfit. Make sure you research the box ahead of time and most places will let you drop in for a free class just to check it out before you sign up for the…
  • Yeah that makes sense! My advice would be check out powerlifters on youtube, Alan is my favorite. Scott Herman also has a great deadlifting video too. The key is your setup & making sure your taking a deep breath into your belly to stabilize yourself before you perform the lift - think of making your middle round all the…
  • To be completely honest, I really didn't start deadlifting correctly until I had a coach help me how to do it, and also make sure you're working on building up your core muscles as well to brace correctly and protect your spine. Check out Alan Thrall on Youtube, he has a couple of AWESOME deadlifting videos to help you…
  • It's happened to me once or twice! Sometimes when I'm bracing my core very tightly, it can happen, especially when its TOM & tampons, etc. Checked with my doctor about it, he said it's not abnormal and definitely happens to people at heavier weights :) Only time I would be concerned is if it happens when you're NOT…
  • Just trying to give some insight - went to the Hershey website. A standard size bar you buy in a store is 43 grams, or 210 calories. It's also helpful to check on the wrapper for more nutrition information. If it fits your calories for the day, then go for it, but I also caution against using food as a reward, more just…
  • I also agree with this - my binge eating was definitely anxiety/depression related. Going through therapy helped this a lot, and I haven't binged in over a year (not saying I haven't eaten bad things, but not in a binging capacity). I really recommend talking to someone and finding the root cause-I'm so happy I did.
  • Rowing machine or stair master!
  • Thanks everyone for the advice, I appreciate it! I might just stick at my 2250 and focus on what I'm doing and not mess with it at the moment. Probably a good idea to check with my coach too to get his advice. Wasn't trying to say that I'm expecting any crazy numbers at my first meet, this was more about affecting the…
  • I also recommend seeing a counselor/therapist/psychologist. It was only once I identified the source of my binging was I able to gain control over it and stop.
  • This makes sense - thanks for the advice! Super excited to compete - good luck to you next weekend!
  • Also work on building up some core strength, as this will help protect you and your spine from back injuries on deadlifts - make sure your abs are always fully engaged & are breathing& bracing in your belly to stabilize yourself.
  • This happened to me but on a much heavier deadlift and I took a break from deadlifting and squatting for a month before I was fine. No disc issues, all muscular but was in a lot of pain. I would take off as much time as you need from deadlifting and avoid exercises where you're hinging at the hip or rotating at all. But…
  • Yeah, this is what my pl coach is telling me too, so excited :) I guess after coming from being severely overweight and losing 60 pounds I still have a weird fear of gaining weight. Mostly just worried about continuing the weight gain trend that I've been seeing. Wasn't sure if going back down to maintenance would cause me…
  • Being generally unhappy with my appearance but then going to the doctor and confirming I was pre-diabetic. Multiple vitamin deficiencies, ankle & feet problems, and irregular TOM/possible fertility issues down the line (according to ob/gyn). Diabetes runs in my family so that's what scared me the most. I realized I had to…
  • I second this advice - there is no difference between different kinds of protein powders & getting bulky vs. losing weight. I however like optimum nutrition or beast sports nutrition.
  • I would recommend seeing a therapist or counselor. I struggled with anxiety too that made it hard to stay consistent/stop binging. Once I learned how to persevere even in the face of anxiety or anything obstacles and built up some mental strength, I found myself being able to stick to a schedule during the critical "habit…
  • Fellow veggie hater here - I like to get my veggies in my by blending spinach into a smoothie, or purée-omg cauliflower in my blender with some olive oil. Or getting brocccoli or cauliflower crumbles and mixing them in with some ground turkey and marinara sauce. Honestly, a lot of veggies I just had to force myself to eat…
  • Not sure why that cut off - what I meant to say is now I lift so am never bored. Do whatever works for you! But I would also suggest trying something else exercise wise that excites you
  • When I was doing long 45 minute periods on the elliptical I used to watch episodes of Parks & Rec and the time went by so quickly, so I hear you
  • 1300 cals? I weigh the same as you - how tall are you? I eat about 1900-2000 to maintain and was feeling great and I've recently upped to about 2250 and have seen amazing strength gains with minimal fat gain (but tons of muscle gain). Are you sure you're eating enough? I know there was a point I hit where I was able to…
  • Definitely - I don't recommend bulking until you've lost all the fat you want. I was at a similar height and weight - in 5'4, and at about 145 lbs (40 pound loss at that point) I started incorporating strength training. I was still able to lose fat while gaining muscle in a deficit at that point. I got down to 127 and am…
