I'll give you my impression as one of those fit guys in "that" part of the gym. Here is what we make fun of when it comes to women at the gym: 1) Women who sit on recumbent bikes while texting or reading a magazine; 2) Women who do only cardio (unless they are killing it on the treadmill); 3) Women who use those dumb balls…

She was planning on racing her first half in the fall. That's 9 months. There is no such thing as a 9 month training program. Why expect that from a beginner when hardcore runners don't do it? You don't need to run the actual race distance to be trained for an event. If that race goal is to "finish" under 4 hours, her…

Not everyone is training for time. Training for 9 months before you run your first half is long enough that most people won't follow through (or they'll have a significant stretch where they stop running in between). Do you only race once a year? I didn't think so. And comparing the training considerations of moving from a…

Where did she say she wasn't properly trained for it? She asked very specifically is it doable with no time goal. She was apprehensive and wanted advice. She's running 4/1 splits 6.5 miles with a stroller...and also says she felt good enough to run another 3 miles (in other words, she wasn't spent). So you think that a…

Too much water without enough electrolyte intake can make you feel confused and give you a nasty headache. That being said, it will not affect your weight loss. If you don't restrict sodium/vitamins/minerals it gives you a lot more leeway to drink as much water as you want.

If you had read her post, she has been running since the start of the year. If that is accurate, and she has put in the type of mileage she says she has, it is more than likely that she can jog a majority of the half-marathon. The point: 1) Gives a baseline target for next time; 2) Increases the chances of a next time…

You can walk a half-marathon in 4 hours. A 4.0 mph walk with no running is 3 hours 17 minutes. The reason why reasonably untrained people die is because they go out too hard at the start, completely exhaust themselves, and struggle the last 3-6 miles. Walk the first half and then attempt your 2 minute/1 minute pace the…

Every try black bean spaghetti? It is an easy source of 30 grams of protein with tons of fiber.

Stop eating out and log your food accurately. If something can't be logged accurately, don't eat it. And golf shouldn't even count as exercise...really?
-
Weight Watchers try to make it easy, but any serious plan will log all of your food with a very small caloric window for leaving things out (celery, mustard, hot sauce, or things less than 10 calories).

I agree with most of the posters here: psychologically it is harder to motivate. It really takes many years for someone's BMR to slow down enough to make a noticeable difference.

Find a protein powder that does not have additives, that you enjoy, and that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. There is nothing magical about any protein powder and more expensive is not a sign of quality.

Well other than this quote the information here is pretty solid. Protein choices (of the 3 macro groups) are the easiest to make...unlike fats and carbs which can come in various forms that drastically change their physiological attributes. So other than looking out for what else comes with the protein you consume, eat…
