  • Check your local laws first :)
  • I'm with you. I truly love my daily walk and look forward to it every day. It's how I basically resolve the things in my crazy, stressful life. I think it's a fantastic habit, and wouldn't give it up for any reason. I would go mad otherwise, probably :) I lost the bulk of my weight on diet alone, after researching that…
  • Well, that's a matter of opinion. And my opinion is that by comparison, that hour is a complete waste of time compared to not drinking that can of coke or glass of wine with dinner. To the original poster, maybe it's a whole different matter - maybe she REALLY wants that glass of wine or whatever. But I would personally…
  • Those gymbro pics tho.... he clearly walks a lot! :) HE KNOWS HIS STUFF, RITE? Seriously though, OP: Walking is fantastic - particularly for little things like longevity. But as a form of weight loss, they're kind of right. It's crap. Does it help? Yeah, in miniscule ways. But the benefits of walking are more in the way of…
  • I use artificial sweeteners liberally and frequently with no issues whatsoever. My favorite is liquid sucralose as it's the sweetest to me and easy to make from the pure powdered form. I am a caffeine nut, and love Monster Ultra energy drinks. I also drink a lot of coffee. Diet Dr. Pepper as well, all day, every day.
  • Wow, right out of the gate with the keto-downer :) I wish you luck, bikini_bug. I do the keto thing myself with great success. Don't let the naysayers get to you. The best way to reach your goals is to do what's best for you. Take it all in, even the negative stuff. Come to your own conclusions.
  • Of course, I won't let him do my vasectomy - but we're talking about the food we eat, something everyone is qualified to do. We're not talking about cutting open my sack :) The point I'm trying to make is that you're invalidating his opinions because you feel he's "not qualified" to report on how people eat. We're ALL…
  • Then I guess you can count the rest of us out on this debate too :) I'm not a scientist either, I'm just some idiot that lost 140lb. His physics degree is what it is - he's openly admitted he's not a very good physicist, and that's why he got into journalism. I'd say on that point alone that his physics degree "doesn't…
  • You're not much for actual debate, are you
  • Yeah, I'd say that's pretty accurate. Definitely in the ball park.
  • His biography states he graduated with a degree in physics. That doesn't count?
  • Well, his book explains why he says that. You left your statement open-ended. You neither agree nor disagree in your post. You leave it up to the reader to decide whether your ultimate meaning is "Taubes said those prophetic words and we should all heed them" or "What Taubes is saying is so ridiculous, no one should…
  • If you simply leave it at that, there's something missing: Context. I don't think you mischaracterized anything - I think a lot of this is open to some degree of interpretation. It's not like we're dealing with exact science :) Well, to me, Taubes seems to try to make the point that overeating is partially the result of…
  • That's kind of why i'm here :) If I outright dismissed what everyone was saying, I probably wouldn't keep reading. I'd just close my browser forever and write it all off as nonsense. That's not what i'm trying to do at all. I enjoy the debate... It's definitely a topic that hits really close to home. All perceived "noise"…
  • Well, for what it's worth - Lustig (of the three you mentioned, plenty more are out there) is probably the one most guilty of this. Particularly when he goes on about how Sugar should be regulated like the opiate he feels it is. I don't really get that vibe from Taubes though. Fung, well, from him I generally get the…
  • After having read all the responses in this thread, this is the line that makes the most sense to me. I've had to drown out the "noise" - you know, the "Taubes is a quack, Fung wants everyone to starve" stuff. It's not that I think Taubes, Fung, or whoever is absolutely right in everything they say and report. Clearly…
  • Maybe... my experience is different. In my experience, people who are successful in managing their weight USUALLY never had a weight problem to begin with. My wife is one of those people. She's been roughly 120lb her entire adult life, and she's my age now. She has NEVER struggled with her weight, and she NEVER has an…
  • You're not wrong - you're absolutely not wrong. But the problem of obesity is one that draws many parallels to other addictions. I feel It's a gross oversimplification to say "you need to take personal responsibility for how many cookies you eat". Again, you *aren't wrong* - but that doesn't even scratch the surface of the…
  • Thank you, very much. To clarify - "Straight CICO" to me means simply counting calories on both sides of the equation - intake and output - regardless of nutrition source (fat/protein/carbohydrates). So, if MFP tells me I have a 2500 calorie "budget" consisting of 2000 calories food and 500 calories from exercise, I can…
  • All in with Keto here, just passed the 2 year mark after losing 140lb. It took me 10 months initially to lose that weight. I am at the point where I let all the detractors detract from Keto all they want. Straight CICO with carbs failed me throughout my entire life repeatedly - so to pitch that to me as a solution is…
  • My excess skin is a badge of honor. It reminds me of where I came from.
  • Keto for me. 305lb starting weight down to 165 eating this way. It's the only way I can eat without feeling hungry. Just passed my 2 year mark.
  • Yeah, I'm not hiding behind it anymore lol
  • Whole Foods is owned by Amazon now, right? Maybe I should ask Alexa why my avocado cost $22.
  • 1st pic, xmas 2010. 2nd pic, this morning. Started Keto Mar 1 2015, my 2 yr anniversary. Starting weight was 305lb. Goal was 175 (reached in 10 months), but Keto eating keeps me at 165. Only exercise is walking, and only around 5-7.5k steps/day. 48yo, 6'3".
  • You want the Polder kitchen scale with the pull-out display. You can "Tare" it to eliminate the weight of plates/bowls/whatever. The display pulls out so you can still read it when you have a large bowl obstructing your view on other kitchen food scales. This feature alone makes the scale worthy of consideration. They're…
  • Keto worked well for me. 130lb lost and I've kept it off 2 years so far. But it's not for everyone, and it's certainly not the cheapest diet to stick with. Some people just can't ditch the carbs. For me, keto was the only way I could eat and not feel hungry constantly. Once I eat a keto meal, my hunger levels plummet after…
  • What's really sad about this thread and millions of others is that people still unequivocally believe that exercise automagically means you'll "lose weight like crazy". Sure, exercise might burn calories, but that doesn't mean you're losing weight. Exercise is a lousy tool for losing weight (science proves this!) when…
