  • I did a spin class for about a year and a half, with a group it was fantastic fun. By myself, no way could I force myself to do a workout on a spin bike. I love to ride outside when the weather is decent but my go to this time of year is running...outside.
  • There are no stupid questions...just stupid answers! You can certainly add some cardio as you see fit but you should also double down on making sure your nutrition is spot on first. I know when I get a little "loose" with my tracking I can stall very quickly.
  • 4.2 miles at 7 degrees...perfect running weather! I'm working on upping my volume and thinking about training up for a 10K.
  • I find that veggies and whole grain carbs work the best to keep me feeling full. Fat, protein and fruit are a recipe for me to eat the whole house in one sitting when I slack on the others.
  • My wife got me a pair of Beats over the ear for Christmas, so far they have survived several runs without falling off or other problems. They connect really quick to my phone's bluetooth signal too.
  • It could also be your shoes.
  • Good for you! I had to do the same when I first started running. I would run for a while then walk until my breathing and heartbeat came back down then hit it again. Don't feel bad about it, just keep it up and you will get better and better. I did my first 5k and had to walk at times to get through it. Same on my second…
  • @WickAndArtoo I do that because by then my arm is about to be yanked out of it's socket and I don't want to wear her out too badly at her age. This has been a great thread and without it I wouldn't know about canicross gear. I'll be in the market for some after the New Year!
  • Here's my running buddy! She's half border collie, 1/4 shepherd and 1/4 black lab. At about 10 years old she can still outrun me! I think she should have been a sled dog, she sure thinks I'm a sled to be pulled. I usually run about two miles with her then drop her at the house and finish my run.
  • Kidney beans or black beans and brown rice is a good combo for a complete amino acid protein profile if I remember correctly.
  • Squats, lunges, glute raises, push ups, planks (front and side) and inverted rows under a table! Check out darebee.com for some ideas of body weight programs without equipment you can do too. Good luck and stay consistent!
  • New long running pants so I don't freeze this winter on runs.
  • Thanks guys!!
  • I've noticed that since the weather has gotten colder my appetite has increased. I seem to go through that each winter though.
  • Michael Matthews has some free Kindle books available that are pretty informative. There are some great bloggers out there too, the price is right also. I stumbled across Lyle McDonald's blog Body Re-composition the other day and it has some great articles. Darebee.com has some nice nutrition resources too.
  • I like to get the most food for the least calories and keep it as healthy as possible too. I eat a lot of chicken breast, tuna, shrimp, whole grain carbs and veggies. I also like a large flavor profile for my food so I look for sauces that have great flavor and low calories. Vinegars, low fat sauces and hot sauces work…
  • Excellent work!!
  • I understand your concerns but whether he's 16 or 60, it's going to have to be his choice. I never cared about my weight until I was 46 and a grandpa, and until our company health insurance started to get feisty about it. Feed him the most nutritional meals you can at home and hope he understands the pitfalls of junk food…
  • If I cheat it's on food. If I cheat too often it shows on my weight loss or lack of. I realize that I am cheating myself and slowing down my trip to the goal but that's on me and me alone. On the other hand, I have lost 50 pounds over the course of 2 years so overall, I'm gaining ground! My health is much better, my…
  • Perseverance, patience and consistency will get you a long ways in lifting! I've been lifting for a year now and I honestly can't say I've put on much muscle at this point. I'm lifting a lot more weight though!! I don't know what program you've been running up to now but there are lots out there. Stick with reputable…
  • Nice inspiration everyone!! I started running some a year ago August at 47 years old. Worked my way up from walking and pretty much hated it but I'm stubborn and I wanted to increase my cardio and be able to run with my daughters and son-in-law so I have persevered. So far I've run 3 official 5K's and a mini-triathlon and…
  • The best indicator is how you feel day to day in your workouts. If you are consistently feeling weaker and wrung out then it's time to do a deload.
  • Nice to know, I may have to look into them for my next pair.
  • Multi-vitamin, fish oil pills (reduce/aid my cholesterol), BCAA's (don't know if they help but I like a little flavor in my workout drink) and protein. I know that with better nutrition and exercise I'm down 50 pounds, lifting more all the time and my blood tests are now all in the normal range. I could cut the BCAA and…
  • Standing sprint intervals until you're ready to puke...
  • I did for a year and a half 3 times a week. i just used the generic spin from mfp for the minutes and calories.
  • This is the weightlifting program I started with a little over a year ago. It's pretty balanced and will give you a foundation to build on. forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=4195843 That is if your goal is lifting. The research indicates building muscle is far better for fat loss than cardio although I do cardio so I…
  • Personally I think you'll have to concentrate on your training for the 1/2 and make it the priority while cutting back on the other things for now. Consider reading "Run for Life" by Roy Wallack, it's a great read, very entertaining and educational. He suggests alternative crosstraining programs for runners you might be…
  • Have you looked at darebee.com? You might find something there that interests you.
  • I did my first mini-tri on Independence Day this year. I learned I hate swimming...and suck at it. It was fun and I'll be doing it again though! If you are looking at a full tri, find a good training plan and stick to it.
