  • I juice 3-4 times a week. I actually use a separate app to put together my numbers (http://www.juicingcollection.com/juicing-calculator/) and then add it to my database. The only challenge is, I rarely make the exact same thing twice so I have a lot of variations in my personal database. I usually treat it as a snack,…
  • When I was working out of the house I would bake up some sweet potatoes or some acorn squash and make a giant pot of quinoa. Then I would just throw together some tupperware bowls with some quinoa, some squash or potatoes and some beans straight out of the can (black-eyed peas, black beans, navy, whatever) then just nuke…
  • My employer had it as a offering which was tied to insurance premiums reductions. I tried it but found it to be a little silly. It was a long time ago but I think it was based on a premise of a 16:8 fast schedule and something about adding a tablespoon of OJ to water every morning. In any event, the video lectures or…
  • Absolutely doable. You can either find a solid 12-week training program on the web (there are several, find one that works) or you can just follow the 10% rule - each week add 10% to your long run. Either way, you have plenty of time so long as you have a solid base (can comfortably run 3-4 miles).
  • Often times gyms will offer personal training either free or cheap. Depending on where you live, there are probably personal trainers in the area that you could work with just a few times to get started. They can provide you with a few routines and ensure you’re doing the excercise safely and in a way to maximize results.
  • I consider myself whole-foods-plant-based or WFPB (as opposed to vegan which often carries an ethical implication). Based on my research and personal experience, I don’t think we need nearly as much protein as people think to make gains. I regularly hover around 50-60g a day, I work out (including lift) several times a…
  • Like I said, for vegans, they are a good source of protein. For anyone else, they are a good source of fiber. And methane.
  • I ate a LOT of Taco Bell 20+ years ago when I was pregnant with my son until I got sick from it. These days, if I drive by one I get queasy. My daughter, who is younger, still blames her brother on the fact that we never get to eat Taco Bell.
  • Just my two cents as someone who follows a plant-based diet: vegans, vegetarians and the like are going to naturally eat more carbs as a result of getting the bulk of their nutrition from veggies and legumes. It’s hard to eat low carb or lower carb as a vegan or vegetarian. It’s possible - I’ve even heard of vegan versions…
  • I don’t do cheat days, but I do sometimes go off the rails. These are days that I know are going to happen in advance - a birthday or Christmas for example. I try to bank a little the day or two leading up to it and then just relax and try to make decent choices without putting too much pressure on myself. I rarely log…
  • Special K original. I have to keep added sugar to a minimum so pretty much anything in a box or package has to be less tha 12g of sugar per serving for me. Milk and fruit sugars don’t bother me, it’s just the cane, corn, and other processed sugars. It’s also relatively low in calories, as far as cereals go. That being…
  • Try drinking water. Hunger can often be confused with thirst. Besides, if you drink 1 liter of water, you’re likely to at least feel full for a bit and that can get you to dinner.

  • I follow a plant-based diet so my go to is Chipotle or Qdoba. I can choose a bowl or salad, dictate how much stuff they put on (lots and lots of veggies, no cheese, tiny bit of guacamole).
  • I use Vega. It’s vegan (pea protein) and relatively clean. I use the unflavored and add it to ice/banana/almond milk based smoothies. Here are the stats:
  • They are high in carbs but also very high in fiber. They are an excellent source of protein for those who don’t eat animal products.
  • I had it bilaterally last year. It was really awful. I was literally pulling myself up my stairs at night. Finally went to the doc (I’m stubborn). He gave me a shot which was AH-mazing for about two weeks until it wore off. Then he gave me meloxicam (similar to ibuprofen) and told me to go to PT. I didn’t take the…
  • Beans are cheap. So are potatoes. If prepared properly they are delicious and nutritious. I get it - back when I was filling my cart with processed food and boxed dinners (like Hamburger Helper) my grocery bill was a full 50% less than it is now that I buy primarily produce, but, bulk shopping, bulk cooking, coupons, etc…
  • Disagree. I went plant-based for health reasons almost 18 months ago. I used to call myself vegan because those who follow veganism as an ethical choice tend to get their hackles up when someone who made the decision for health reasons decides to eat that way. Sometimes I refer to myself in the tongue-I’m-cheek fashion of…
  • Nuts and nut butters, as someone else suggested. Also legumes in general (lentils, beans, chickpeas, etc) - I have some form of legumes with nearly every meal. They are high in fiber, often have fairly high protein profiles and are calorie dense.
  • Close to 20 years in HR. I left the corporate world last spring and started my own consulting business. I also teach at a local college. A few years ago I was in the best shape of my life - running, lifting. I did two half’s that year, probably ran 20-30 miles a week. And then I got injured. And had surgery. And a bunch of…
  • Let me give you my experience: a little over 10 years ago, I weighed 300 pounds (I was about 170 overweight). I had gastric bypass. You don’t get any more calorie restrictive than that early outl unless you’re dead. I walked 3 miles a day within a week of surgery. At no time did I ever come close to losing 20 pounds in 2…
  • Rich Roll - lonnnng podcasts but really great guests usually; health and fitness, entrepreneurs, thought leaders, etc. Barbell Shrugged - fitness Shawn Croxtom Quote of the Day - motivational, short (10-15 minutes) The Moth Story Hour - stage story- telling performances TED radio Hour - science, technology, all kinds of…
  • I take monthly injections because I’m chronically deficient and can’t get enough from diet. I have not noticed a difference in metabolism (at least in terms of increased weight loss) but it does allow me to maintain a good level of energy which equates to me being more active than when my B12 is in the ditch.
  • Low carb vegan diets are pretty difficult to maintain unless you count net carbs because if you eat a diet of plant based whole foods it’s also generally high in fiber.
  • Depends on whether they are licensed or not. Generally speaking, licensed nutritionists have to have, at minimum, a bachelors, but it varies by state and agency. https://www.nutritioned.org/licensed-nutritionist.html That doesn’t mean they can’t still be full of it, of course. I’m just suggesting that a licensed nutrition…
  • Curious about what types of things you’re cooking that takes 20 minutes from scratch. Not poking, really actually curious because I am always looking for new ideas and some days are more hectic than others.
  • Smoothies with protein supplements are a great way to go, especially with a frozen banana base. My go-to is a couple of handfuls or spinach, frozen banana, ice and almond milk with a scoop of protein powder, some cocoa powder (if using plain protein) and either a packet of instant espresso or some peanut butter or almond…
