  • Instead of looking at weight loss as a “dieting” thing that you’ll do for a short period of time, start to think of it as more of a “doing better forever” kind of thing. It’s pretty common to lose 5 or 10 pounds, then someone orders a pizza and you eat a lot of it and then you feel like you’ve undone all your hard work.…
  • I log best estimates as soon as I get home. I don’t go to chain restaurants, but I use the entries for them (e.g. for fettuccine alfredo, I use a verified Olive Garden entry). I figure it’s probably more accurate than a user’s guess.
  • They ARE kind of ugly. They make my feet look giant!
  • Hoka. Hands down. I’m an avid walker and had plantar fasciitis. They are expensive, and took a minute to get used to (they have arch “bumps”) but I’ve had this pair for 5 months and they fit like a glove. I will buy more.
  • Hmmmmm… “shock my body”… why do you need to do that? You’ve been doing this for 8 weeks and lost 12 pounds, which is stellar. Some of it was water, yeah. It’s how it is. Just keep going, logging and plugging along. I’m not far off from you weight wise and get that many steps too; 1300 calories a day got old pretty fast.…
  • My strategy for budget-friendly veggie-forward shopping for years and years: look at the store’s sale flier, choose 3 or 4 vegetables on sale, look for recipes that feature those vegetables, then round out my list with other stuff I need. Tip: If it’s a really good sale, like when green beans are 99 cents a pound in the…
  • Yes, that’s high. It’s probably a dry measurement. Search for basmati rice cooked.
  • I have a roll of masking tape and a sharpie stored with my Tupperware. Each food gets labeled with the way I titled the recipe, plus the info I need to find it and log it again. I freeze a lot of things individually to eat in the next couple of months, so I sympathize with you about forgetting what I did when I cooked and…
  • Have you ever tried StepBet? I have it synced with my Fitbit. When you join a challenge, it calculates your daily step goals and most challenges are 6 weeks. It costs money to join a challenge, but you get it back plus a few bucks (once I got $20 extra!) for meeting your step goals. I save up my earnings to pay for my…
  • The act of logging with your best estimate is, in my opinion, as valuable as getting it 100 percent accurate. For me, it lets me move on to the next meal/new day without thinking too much about it. If you don't lose as much as you want that week, you have the 20/20 hindsight to know where you can tighten up. We do need to…
  • Calories, protein, and fiber are what I care about. Like the others said, everything else seems to fall into place when I meet those goals.
  • My digital food scale is kind of crusty and probably 10 years old. I’ve only had to replace batteries. The brand is Camry. I’m sure it was cheap because I told my ex I wanted a food scale and that’s what I got for Christmas. My cheap food scale outlasted the ex. But on topic: pics are good for remembering so you can record…
  • Like the others above, I make sure I hit my protein goal of 90-100 grams. This means the percentage of total calories varies. I also aim for 25+ grams of fiber and to reach the micronutrient goals MFP tracks. I don’t care about fat and carbs as long as I’m covering the rest and am maintaining or losing.
  • A few days won’t undo all the work you’ve put in, unless that three days turns into forever.
  • It took me 22 weeks to lose 20 pounds. You’re doing fine, especially if you aren’t overly hungry.

  • I love camping cooking! Vegetables can be grilled. One memorable meal was a can of beans and a can of tomatoes and spices warmed in my little cast-iron pot. It made great campfire tacos.
  • Is that 10,000 per day? I walk a lot and am prone to hip tightness. I highly recommend doing stretches every day, or even twice a day. You can search “tight hip exercises” on YouTube, or even Google for some poses you can do while sitting around. It’s improved my life hugely. It feels good too, so it’s not like it’s a huge…
  • When I quit smoking, I constantly said to myself, "I am not a smoker." Repeated in my head all day like some kind of weirdo. Try it! "I don't binge eat." Put that sentence on some Post-its around your house. Also, finding ways to replace the "activity" of eating is a good strategy. There are a lot of books and podcasts and…
  • I weigh every 1-4 weeks depending on when I feel like going to the gym in my building to weigh, since I don’t own a bathroom scale. I do keep a measuring tape in my bathroom and wrap it around my waist quite frequently. I also like data. I’ve calculated a pretty accurate daily net calorie burn, so I rarely ever get a scale…
  • Old Navy is my choice. It’s not the best quality and it gets stretched out, but my daughter works there so it’s REALLY cheap for me. I did spring for a pair of pants from Athleta when they were having a sale; they are thick, and I wanted something for walking outside in the cold. They look really good on, I must say! The…
  • Do you log the food you eat on your cheat day? If not, I’d encourage it, even if it’s just your best estimate. For some perspective on what Tom mentioned above, I’m also close to goal and am working on slow weight loss with a small deficit. I have logged some 3500-4000 calorie days over the past 5 months; that might be a…
  • Let’s explore this for a minute, because I do think you should be losing at 1800 if those are your stats. I’m basing this off my own numbers for comparison, and that seems way low for maintenance given your activity level. You have logged diligently for a month? No days off? Would you feel comfortable sharing your diary?…
  • I can get behind this. I am pretty "plant forward" in my eating and cooking. Get to know your beans, for sure. I will say that I try to hit at least 80 grams of protein a day, and meat propels me to that total in leaps. No meat gets me there in planned, carefully calculated chunks of 5-10 grams per non-meat…
  • I made a commitment to log everything, even when it’s ugly. (151 days straight and counting!) The data I now have is very helpful. Logging each day of gluttony helps me put it to bed and move on without stewing in my guilt.
  • I had a similar start weight and height and I just happen to be analyzing my spreadsheet right now and thought I’d share so you have a comparison. 21 weeks, 18 pounds lost, average daily net calories (before exercise calories consumed): 1545. My macros shake out to a fairly consistent 40 carbs, 40 fat, 20 protein, but I…
  • I have tried to be a runner several times in my life. Even when I was in top shape—and I mean strong, not just thin—I could not run without hating every second. I was huffing and puffing and it felt like my whole skeleton was taking a pounding. So I slowed down. Way, way down… to a walk. 🙂 While I like to claim that I’m…
  • Do you have MFP synced with a step app where you might have accidentally added a meal?
  • It is! And I’m not that worried about sugar in my diet, I just don’t want to taste it in my sandwiches. I found a couple recipes on the King Arthur Baking site. Once I make my way through this Dave’s loaf, I’m going to try one.
