  • I still suffer from this. Went to the podiatrist last march, got the shots. They helped temporarily. Got the custom orthotics, and they helped immediately---to the point that after a couple weeks I stopped wearing them because I was "cured." Naturally, it came back with a vengeance. 6 months of no running, always wearing…
  • For breakfast/lunch I like to microwave a scrambled egg with some spinach and tomato (about 1min), throw a slice of pepper jack cheese on it and nuke another 20 secs, then slice it up onto a high fiber wrap. Also, I love Greek yogurt and the protein Luna bars.
  • I don't have back issues, but my first ever race was a 20K (12.4 miles)...no 5ks for me! Once your dr oks you for it, I'd suggest finding one with a generous time limit. The ones associated with full marathons tend to be open for 5 hours or more. Then just listen to your body and make it your goal to finish, not…
  • Not the best, but not the worst, and certainly more budget friendly than many. I buy these all the time for my kids, as the dr suggested it (of note--my kids aren't trying to lose weight--between all their activities, the dr suggested this to help them keep the weight on that they've got so they can grow). I eat them as…
  • Depends on the kid and level of filth. I've got three kids (2 boys), and they bathe about three times a week. More if dirty/sweaty on a non bath day. It's not until puberty that kids develop body odor, so it's not necessary every day. The pediatrician hasn't looked at me in horror when I mention three baths a week, so I'm…
  • I've done several halfs. I do a lot of my training on the treadmill, but I do suggest trying at least one run each week outside. That said, be smart about it....a broken ankle from falling on ice will definitely derail your plans. The big thing, other than shoes, is to go in without a time goal. It's your first half---a…
  • Go for it, unless you have been having pain and that's why you wanted a rest day. Be flexible...maybe a different route, relaxed run (not timing it) or something. Maybe tomorrow you'll feel less like running, and you can rest then. But if you feel good, and you've not been in pain or feeling run down or anything, then run!
  • I have high cholesterol, but I have started eating about 2 eggs a day. Eggs have less cholesterol than previously thought, and saturated fat has more of an effect on blood cholesterol than the cholesterol in food does. Or, as my husband pointed out, the "gobs of full fat cheddar cheese" that I used to have with my…
  • I've done several halfs...they are a blast! If you want some food to fuel up with, raisins or jelly beans work great. Personally, I only refuel with the powerade most of the time, although I have grabbed the jellybeans on race day when I needed it. Enjoy your run!
  • Plan plan plan! As its football season, I'm out and about most of the weekend, too, and tailgate food is fantastic. I have a light but filling breakfast (usually an egg or two). At the tailgates, I choose no more than two must haves....usually a hot dog and a dessert, and eat one portion of that....I don't like alcohol, so…
  • Dance Marathon....it's a group found on many college campuses that not only raises a lot of money for the local Children's Miracle Network hospital (local for the college--for example, Iowa State University's Dance Marathon monies go to University of Iowa Children's Hospital), but has activities and fun stuff all year long…
  • I eat life choice protein bars (found at Walmart in the granola bar aisle) if I have to...they are cheap with only 14 carbs and 21 grams of protein. I also like Luna protein bars (19 carb, 12 protein), and nature valley protein granola bars (14 carbs, 10 grams protein). I only eat them if I'm out and about and can't eat at…
  • Lots of pools, if you have access to one, have a morning lap swim. It's great exercise, and won't be hard on your knees or feet. You can be done before work.
  • I either dip my veggies in mustard, or I combine them with eggs in an omelet. Gets me to choke down three servings a day....
  • Sent a friend request. I'll be 34 in a couple months, and I'm desperately trying not to look or feel like the frumpy mom anymore....
  • I tell myself during the week, when I'm craving something with no nutritional value, that I can have it on Sunday. And then when Sunday rolls around, if I still want it, I eat it. Since its only once a week, I like to savor it. For instance, I have a weakness for white chocolate truffles. So today, I bought myself a bag,…
  • I've had some luck mixing it into oatmeal....but I think it still tastes nasty.
  • I had to do swimming and biking for awhile to ease my pf. I also do stretching, frozen water bottle, custom orthotic arch support, and I don't go barefoot or wear flip flops or any cute sandals. I've had cortisone shots as well. It's taken 6 months, but I'm finally able to walk without limping, and I'm mostly pain free. It…
  • I would suggest taking a week off, and then trying a lower mileage amount. I know it sucks....I had heel pain in January, kept up with my running until march, when I literally could not take another step...and $300 custom orthotics and 3 injections later...I still can't run. It's been over 5 months. It's better to take…
  • Had a faint line like that three days after my missed period...tried again in another three days, and the line was still faint, but less so....9 months later gave birth to a 9lb, 8 oz baby boy. I'd say that's a positive, but if you can wait a day or two to test again, more power to you. Congrats!
  • Not running this year..only the second time since 2006 that I'm not running it. I've done one full, but the rest were halfs. You will love it! Great course, super volunteers....it's all terrific. I'm going to be there supporting my sisters, and I'm planning on the full next year, if my foot heals. Best of luck and have fun!
  • My SO doesn't know my number, and doesn't really care, but he knows that I'm not feeling good about myself right now. He doesn't care if I lose weight, but he wants me to exercise so I start feeling better in my skin.
  • My 7 year old ran a 5k earlier this month in 28:46. He ran last year, finishing in 34:36. Our personal rules are that you have to be 6 to run the 5k (son #2 will run his first next year), just because of the cost. We do "training runs" where we cover the distance without a time goal, and work up to completing it in an…
  • Not doing the race, but I wanted to say that you'll love doing a race! 5k races are great!
  • I've done one full, and lots of half marathons. My recommendations are to do at least one 20 miler, two if you have time, the last one being at least 4 weeks before your marathon. Listen to your body on the training runs....if something hurts enough to change your gait, then STOP. I'd also suggest one day of strength…
  • Going to my in-laws. My hubby will fix their computer while I corral my three kids and try to keep them from breaking anything. Then we'll have Brats, baked beans and sweet potato fries (the fries are the only thing that the kids and I like, although I will eat a brat if nothing else is offered). Hoping the weather is good…
  • Gave up my diet mountain dew from jan. 1, 2012 until may 3, 2012. That's 124 days, if you are curious. Was drinking 2L day before I stopped. I did not lose any weight when I stopped drinking soda...and actually gained, because I ate a LOT of crap trying to not give into my soda craving. I love the taste, and I enjoy…
  • Sugar free chocolate pudding is my go to. I buy the snack packs...even the jello brand "decadent" flavors come in at about 60-80 cals.
  • A nutritionist is a great idea....but it might go over better if the appointment is either for you (with her tagging along) or the whole family. She should not be singled out. Also, is there a sport she could tolerate? I know you mentioned asthma, but is there something she enjoys? (ice skating/hockey works nicely for the…
  • I log it as circuit training, but only 18 minutes worth (I don't count warm up or cool down)
