  • I had my gallbladder removed in '99. I didn't have thyroid cancer, but do have Hashimoto's thyroiditis ( autoimmune hypothyroidism). Diabetes was my rule-changer - after diagnosis, i switched to a low carb - high fat - moderate protein diet and have had great success. My husband had had a thyroidectomy due to cancer in…
  • Properly fitting shoes make a tremendous difference! My husband and I ended up going to a running store for evaluation and fitting. He loves his Saucony and I adore my Brooks and we both enjoy walking now.
  • I do the same thing. If I'm feeling good, I don't want to spoil it. However, if I'm already feeling like crud, might as well go whole hog. Silly thinking and a vicious cycle, but there it is.
  • Absolutely! I don't even go as high as 10. I promise myself only 5 minutes, but can't remember the last time i quit there
  • I cut out diet soda (was a Diet coke/diet Pepsi FIEND) for 15 months. Recently, I've discovered low-carb root beer floats and have one (or a red pop float or an orange pop float or a creme soda float) several times a week

  • WLS is a decision for you and your doctor(s). I do want to touch on the above though. It's not that the military thinks it's a lack of discipline. Here's the list of medical disqualifications http://www.endusmilitarism.org/ar40-501.html Those with celiac sprue are also DQ'd (Intestinal malabsorption syndromes, including…
  • Absolutely everything written below! I've had two herniated ("ruptured") discs - just woke up one morning in extreme pain. Despite what webMD says, ice is a better option if there is inflammation. Increased swelling can result in nerve damage - heat FEELS better, but cold reduces swelling. An MRI is a really really good…
  • QFT! *claps hands and nods head*
  • More difficult? Maybe More important? Definitely I'm 45, with diabetes, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, degenerative disc disease and OA in my wrists, fingers, ankles and back. To keep going, all I have to do is think back to how I felt 2 years ago
  • watched it yesterday. His blog is also full of interesting stuff!
  • 30-50 total carbs or 10-30 net. That gives me enough for 4-6 servings of vegetables. I don't do grains and fruits are a rare treat.
  • QFT. How one achieves control isn't as important as achieving control.
  • Another in agreement. A low-carb lifestyle has been recognized as a viable way for those with metabolic dysfunction to re-gain control - hardly a fad diet. I'm a firm believer in IIFYM - my macros just happen to reflect an emphasis on fats and proteins rather than carbs.
  • Obviously, I'm not a person...I'm a pond!
  • Instead of a mug, try making the MIM on a square tupperware lid....then slice in 1/2 for 2 slices of "bread" I don't have a lot of experience with low-carb commercially available products since I need to avoid gluten but there are some good ones out there. Joseph's is the brand that comes to mind.
  • The simple rule of thumb is that the higher the fat content, the lower the amount of lactose (a sugar). Whole milk has fewer carbs than skim milk. Cream, cheese and butter have an even higher fat content, so there are even fewer carbs. Luckily, I have never been a milk fan and gladly switched to unsweetened almond milk :-)
  • I've been doing LCHF since January 2012. My macros are ideally 10C/70F/20P, although I sometimes increase protein to 30% and lower fat to 60% (not for any particular reason....just how it works out) Starting --> 6 months -->1 year A1c - 7.3 -->5.5 --> 5.2 Total Cholesterol - 207 --->172 -->161 HDL - 37 --> 40 --> 53 LDL -…
  • QTF! I certainly wouldn't recommend avoiding herbs and spices unless the taste you're looking for is b-o-r-i-n-g. Herbs and spices add minimal calories/fat/carbs/protein, but a boatload of flavor.

  • Yep! Can't say that i aim for as much as possible from saturated, but I do like at least a 50/50 split of MUFA and saturated. I definitely try to absolutely avoid TF and PUFA
  • Big girl who loves her Brooks here. I also live in the boonies, so I googled "running store+area" to find the closest one. Highly recommend finding a running store to be properly fitted. I also tried out Saucony and Asics, but the salesperson ruled out one after watching me walk and i ruled out the other after joggin on…
  • I have a balance beam scale. LOVE it - always accurate and it's easy to check the calibration
  • Best for who? For those with metabolic disorders, insulin resistance is highest in the morning so low-carb breakfasts are a wise idea. OP, you said no-carb so most of my suggestions wouldn't work for you. If you want low-carb, here are a few ideas eggs in all their glory - fried, scrambled hard-boiled, quiche, omelette. I…
  • I prefer liquid Splenda (EZ-Sweetz) or stevia because the powders have carby fillers. Just purchased a few flavored stevia liquids (orange, vanilla, cinnamon) and am liking them in my tea and my grain-free sub for oatmeal.
  • Exercise can raise blood sugars ...or cause them to go too low. Heat and humidity can also affect blood sugar, so that was probably a factor as well! With the heat and exertion, it's also possibly you were dehydrated. Just remember, if you go ever go low, what you ate was not a great choice. To treat a low, you want…
  • TJ's has great prices for nuts and cheese! I stock up on frozen kale - one of the few stores that carries it. I also pick up various dark chocolate bars when I'm there. If PA wasn't stuck in the Dark Ages, I'd love to buy some of their wine
  • My diary is open. I've eliminated grains and restrict fruits and legumes to 1/4-1/2 servings. High fat, moderate protein. Lots of leafy and cruciferous vegetables - no starchy vegetables. No sugary yogurt or milk - my dairy is in the form of cheese or plain Greek yogurt.
  • I love my Fitbit! If I lost it today, I would immediately buy another
  • I've done almost completely the opposite. I now avoid all grains, including oatmeal. Eat red meat 1-2 times per week and always use oil (coconut, butter/bacon fat) in my cooking. Like you, I've added a fish oil supplement and do 1/2 hours of weight training 3x per week in addition to 30-60 minutes of cardio per week. In…
