  • If by cardio you mean aerobic exercise, sure I tend to throw in something a bit more sustained to cool off after a strength session. I generally don't go over 10-20 minutes like a 1K row, 5 minutes on the Airdyne, or even a nice jog. I started as an endurance runner and find myself missing sustained aerobic activity for…
  • I'm a bit reversed from everyone here and follow RW's guide about carbs (1-1.5g per lb of body weight). My macros are at 40 carbs/30 protein/30 fat. Generally I break down the Owen equation to roughly 2200 on workout days and 2000 on non-workout days. Been gaining like a champ.
  • You are incorrect. Weight lifting increases your resting calorie consumption and metabolism which proceeds to work well after the lifting has ceased. You do burn more while actively engaging in lifting, but as studies have shown time and time again, increasing your muscle mass through weight lifting also increases your…
  • Scientifically speaking, you burn calories from fat while weightlifting and well after. Building refers to the rate at which you strengthen muscles; this is not always indicated by the "bulking" many people are afraid of.. Studies have proven that the more muscle mass you acquire (mass which is built in injury and repair…
  • You may have been tying the shoelaces too tight and cutting off circulation on the top of your foot. It can happen with new shoes; they don't have a lot of give in the material.
  • Jillian Michaels does not have "man arms" and no hips. Good lord, look at what society wants women to look like! Ladies, put down the Cosmo and pick up a barbell. Strength is not about bulk, it is about building confidence and helping your body be the best it can possibly be. Let me put this in plain English: YOU WILL NOT…
  • You are doing everything right! That muscle, the tibialis anterior is strengthening every time you run. Did you know that running is the one exercise that truly works out the tibialis anterior? You can always tell a runner by a pronounced muscle. "Shin splints" are your body repairing the muscle damage caused by the…
  • In that case, you may want to watch out for P90X. Only because there is an entire section dedicated to jumping. The section "Plyometrics" makes up a core part of the program. Tons of air squats, step-ups, etc. that may agitate the fit of your knee and give you some anterior patellar pain. Yoga seems like a good match but…
  • First off, CONGRATS. Taking the first run is usually a hard step, but it seemed easy for you! That means you are already a runner; it is a state of mind. I'm a marathoner now, but when I started, I could barely run a mile. As some of the other posters suggested, I picked up a couch to 5K and used that as a training…
  • Hm, that patella alta is a bit concerning. Has this been diagnosed specifically? EDIT: Also, do you have any therapies prescribed? Water mobility exercises, hip strengthening?
  • I'm a Crossfit nerd. I drank the kool-aid and love it. While I won't go full paleo, I'm usually in the gym 4 times a week. On my days off, I run. To answer your question, I started Crossfit after having lost about 20 pounds and really wanting to get toned. It did that and then some! I feel and look better than ever, and…
  • You have a Biggest Loser logo and you are upset that I am giving her tough love? Wow, now who is being judgmental?
  • Ok, I'm obviously not from the UK, but please tell me that there is an actual Ministry of Sound. Why? Because that is hilarious.
  • IMO, I think you are using muscle building as a scape goat for other things that may not be working. There is no reason that you shouldn't be losing weight (especially at your body weight) so you need to evaluate your choices. Your equation is wrong. Either your input or your output is off. And you are on some "Magic…
  • I totally agree with this. I've been lifting weights and trying a modified paleo diet while training for a marathon. At first, only doing cardio, I lost weight. That ended when I started Crossfit again. The scale went up 5 pounds in the last month, but my waist, hips, and thighs are the incredible shrinking body parts. I'm…
  • My list perpetually includes: 1. Run the World & Single Ladies - Beyonce 2. Dog Days Are Over - Florence + the Machine (can't beat the lyrics, "Run fast for your mother, run fast for your father.") 3. On to the Next One, Dirt Off Your Shoulder, Big Pimpin' - Jay Z 4. Oh No - Girl Talk (This whole album is amazing) 5. Light…
  • Read: It is much better not to ever try. You said a mouthful there.
  • Last night we did 8,3,5 at 90% on back squats. It was a strength training warm-up before the WOD. The majority of Crossfit gyms build strength exercises, not the other way around. Unfortunately, the general population only considers the WOD instead of the entire hour you attend. You understand that we aren't doing 20…
  • You are definitely a little sore after the first session of Crossfit, but that is what On-Ramp is for. It is meant to slowly guide you into Crossfit. Have you ever even done a session yourself? All this talk of other people makes me think you've never even tried it. Instead, you're trying to fear monger and badger other…
  • That's a fantastic idea!
  • May I ask why?
  • Here here! By the way I would LOVE to see extreme bowling or extreme ballet.
  • Do you realize you linked to the wrong article? Also, if you've never done Crossfit, I'm about 100% certain you aren't in any position to be speaking on its merits or shortcomings.
  • I'm a Crossfit Betty, love it, can't stop. I drank the Kool-aid. Looking forward to competing this year. It is the only sport that returned me to and under 8:00 mile.
  • I think the HRM would work really well for Crossfit as it is a sustained strength training effort. The whole idea is combining cardio with high-intensity weight lifting. You really maintain your heart rate for the entire exercise set.
  • Ah ha! Manual entry with a HRM sounds like a way to beat the system. I was hoping for an easier solution though because I'm lazy about inputting workouts, lol.
  • After Crossfit I inhale coconut water smoothies. No protein powder though - I have no idea how that stuff works. Keep up the casual disregard for glassware my friend!
  • The face is always the tell tale sign! Congrats and keep up the hard work!
  • I am boring and eat the same thing for lunch everyday. Once a month I splurge and go to Whole Foods (though it is easy to overeat there). Lunch: Two whole wheat pieces of Arnold's bread Tabasco Coarse Ground mustard (2 tablespoons) Two slices of Thin n' Trim turkey (or whatever low-fat/low sodium version they have) A slice…
  • Would love some friends! Hit me up!
