  • I'll try. Probably better at maintaining IF than a social presence though ;)
  • Hello! I've just started Tuesday (uh, 3 days ago) as my husband is in hospital and can't tell me i am being silly ;-) hoping i can make it a habit before he comes back. I'm working on doing +-16/8, quit eating around 7-8pm and start eating about noon. Having a hard time not to snack on things, like when i cut up cheese as…
  • IMO all running books are biased. some of the minimalist books read (almost) like esoterics.... still, i've read a few... a more scientific based one is "Natural Running" by Danny Abshire - if i remember correctly, he tries to sell you on a training program/system/app, but if you ignore that it's an interesting read on the…
  • last year i started with a couch to 10k program - wasn't sore at all. this year i just started running arbitrary distances with walking breaks when out of breath, and gee whiz, i am sore and my ankles are acting up. thinking "i know what i am doing" had me over doing it... time to take a step back and start with a plan....
  • i'm liable to bite the next owner of a loose (out of control) dog myself. and his/her last words will be "don't worry he's friendly!". my GSD may not be friendly, but he is always under control. on leash or off. as for threats when running, coyotes and raccoons - there's something seriously wrong if they approach you even…
  • and don't forget cardio vs strength ;-)
  • You'd love jalapeno wine, if you can find someone who makes it... great for spicing up sauces :-)
  • I'll admit, i have a pair of pants i got 10, 15? years ago because i soo loved the embroidery, problem is, the only pair left was size 36 (european). back then i was a 40. i have never, to this day, been able to fit into them. actually never tried until i found them again after moving. So that is my project for the…
  • Pacing comes with practice. some people say to listen to music, personally, i found myself slowing or speeding up depending on the song that was playing. if you figure out a proper playlist maybe, but meh, that'd be actual homework, so i ditched the music altogether. now i listen to books if anything at all... for me, i…
  • i switched to minimalist shoes and a lot of my joint aches and pains went away. you have to build up SLOOOOOWLY though. at first i got a lot of blisters in my "toe shoes" (now i have socks, but they remove a lot of the "ground feel"), so that kept me from over doing it. I am considering trying actual barefoot running this…
  • I'd say it depends on your attitude, and your club - where i learned karate, we were taught that running is always the first choice, if confrontation is unavoidable, you do just enough to provide yourself with a chance to run. but then, my club would ban people who were caught fighting in public. part of training was that…
  • 350 for 2 hours doesn't sound like a lot. depending on your instructor and level of motivation of course... from what i remember from the days when i took karate, i would expect the warmup before and the strength training at the end to account for about 200 calories - plus however much you put into the actual practice -…
  • i guess i have been a casual runner this spring... i started cycling for cross training, and forgot i was a runner for a while there :blushing: anyhow, i got back to 5-6km four times a week, and now signed up for a half marathon training plan on runkeeper (the only way to get me back to a running "regime". still four runs…
  • Uh, that'd be more than you'd burn running. Not likely.
  • I have to admit, I got really lazy with my hair lately - barely brush it after a shower. Just twist it up and clip it into a coil. Wet. Or braid it. Only problem with that is all the waves it gives me the next day. I also found (for my hair) the leave-in conditioner spray from fructis seems to work quite well - i mainly…

  • I get dressed for running - the dog needs to go out. I come home from running - the dog needs to go out (replace needs with wants if you please). I may skip the shower, especially if I am doing something active later, but i always put on fresh clothes. Smell isn't everything
  • Before I began running for exercise, my chest would burn if I had to run hard to catch a bus/train/whatever. To the point I'd actually have a cough (cold) for days after. After I started running regularly, I'd consider those mad dashes as just stretching my legs. I still have the burning throat/lung issues if I start out…
  • I started cycling this spring because running got to be too hard on my feet (switched to 100% minimalist running this year), now I cycle every other day still to give my legs a rest. Is it as good a workout? Depends on how much you push. you have more latitude I find, you can rest (not pedal) for stretches of time, where…
  • i had a friend who thought it was normal to throw up after every run. i think she still doesn't know better, she just avoids running. point is, people have to get over the misconceptions they have of a given sport, or sport in general. If you believe you ought to go hard enough that you will pass out at some point, then…
  • That's 14% of your body weight! Not likely, and probably not healthy. (entirely non-expert opinion) If you are looking for a sustainable outcome, you need to figure out where the fluctuations are coming from. identify your habits, figure out what needs changing, and what you are willing to change. permanently. (this…
  • i'd second c25k. but this time go at it slowly - no need to run hard enough to be panting at the end of each interval. pacing is what you need to learn. there is no reason for you not to be able to maintain a heart rate inbetween 120 and 180. the problem is in your head (sorry if that sounds, umm, questionable). as for…
  • My mood is a great indicator - if I wake up grouchy and ready to tear into someone, it's time for a rest day. Typically I get 3 or 4 days of exercise in, then a rest day. I alternate cycling and running, but will opt for cycling if I am not feeling 100% (I just injured my toe for example). My main goal is to improve my…
  • Well, easy way to figure out if it is the calories. I'll just bump up my activity level and see. Not likely I'd gain weight overnight now is it...
  • But... Endorphines are fun  i run and cycle, for fun, i take a leisurely bike ride to the store, or the lake, or i go out with my dog... it's all a mindset. and personally, if i didn't enjoy it on some level, i'd find something else to do...
  • and just another. yup. that's what you pay for when buying them - excellent marketing  anyhow, i am always looking for lighter, cooler exercise gear, so i can just frown at this and smile at the same time... but then, if they give someone incentive to work out and move more , i guess in a way they would be working....
  • Good luck! 3h should be no problem, unles syou get stuck in traffic.... I've been considering entering a race, but nah, why pay for running if i can do it every day for free... maybe the 10k one that will benefit the local zoo
  • if i understand it right - the op is using those dr sholls custom fitted inserts - http://www.footmapping.ca/index.html how they would work with or without the original insert baffles me, but you can always phone and ask them to explain it to you.
  • things that come to mind are hydration, magnesium, potassium and proper (slow) warmup. the poster mentioning the issue with wearing heels has a good point too. when i got back into (minimalist) running after a few months break, i had a lot of soreness in my calves, but no cramping. maybe doing less running and a bit of…
  • i was looking at engo patches myself. ended up using a blister stick (similar to bodyglide) instead. works like a charm. if your problem is the insert moving around, why not tape it to the original insert with athletic tape? depending on how your shoe fits, you may also want to look into different ways of lacing your…
