What is it with...
So before going ahead and trying it, I did some reading on intermittent fasting. There it said 16-8 is pretty standard, with 15-9 often being better for women. (And the alternate day or 5-2 day fasting) So color me surprised when I join a few Facebook groups o IF, and it's a bunch of people crying about not losing…

Finding myself in a strange situation...
It's been years since i was logging calories. Back then i went from about 160lbs down to 140 i think. Did a lot of running. This time, i was up to nearly 180lbs, but barely had time to even think about tackling that since my husband was diagnosed with cancer. He's been in hospital for over two months now, and after the…

Build Healthy Habits 2019
I have a bunch of things i want to start doing (better) but doing them all for January 1st would last 24h at most... So here's my plan: Change 1 thing a week, and make it a habit, before moving on to the next one. So far I've come up with the following things i will tackle: 1. Drink more water 2. Drink less coffee 3. Drink…

Not eating enough?
I've only started logging again in the last week, after my weight loss (exercise alone) had slowed down a bit. Anyhow, I've been netting about 1600 calories on average. Am not particularly hungry between meals, basically just curbing my snacking. I run and cycle on alternate days, with a day off here and there for good…

pedometer & calorie adjustment.
Ok, so i know the basics on adding calories, exercise and activity level (yes, even based on steps). and i don't often actually count calories, so it's rather academic anyhow... however, i see the fitbit calorie adjustments and was wondering if there was a way to get the same effect using a pedometer app such as runtastic?…

Energy gels & diabetes
Ok, not sure whether this belongs here or in the nutrition forum, but I figure it's more likely to find people with relevant experience here... A few weeks ago, the doc told my hubby that he's on the verge of diabetes. So we've been shunning everything sugar(y). Then, as I am buying my running shoes, DH just adds in a…

Soy milk powder...
Ok, call me cheap, but I just read the label at bulk barn and it says 100g o soy milk powder contains 53g of protein. At 29cents that is not too bad.... So I bought some, mixed a tbsp into my milk for cereal. And it actually wasn't too awful. Now I'd have to measure it properly, bu I'd guess it added about 5g of protein to…

Why don't you like minimalist running?
I am just wondering, seen as I find myself advocating minimalist running a lot lately... I know it isn't for everyone, so I was just looking for opinions by people who have actually tried it and decided they don't like it / it doesn't work for them. Not looking for a mud fight, just a few different perspectives... For my…

Thoughts on running versus cycling...
So for two years I've been calling myself a runner. Yet, I actually used to bicycle way more than run (ha, I never did that unless late for a bus) - growing up in Europe, the bike was my preferred way to commute, well, at least as far as the train station... Now, I've started cycling again. For leisure, can you imagine...…

Returning to running - cycling instead of rest day?
After yet another winter when I was determined to keep running, and then flaked out, I have been getting back into it. Seen as I don't want to cause myself an injury, I've decided to keep the running to every other day for a while yet. And work up along my usual plan to get to 10k in 2-3months. But, I am also determined to…

winter running shoes - minimalist
ok, i've spent a few hours on google, and checking online with local running and sports outlets, and i can't come up with a good idea on what type shoe i should get. i was thinking they ought to be waterproof, or at least quite water resistant, since my town tends to be a bit slow on snow removal. i am eyeing the vibram…

a weight bench story....
so i got a weight bench off of kijiji, even talked my husband into picking it up. it's a york 114. altogether a bit awkward, but sturdy enough. it also came with a barbell and about 150lbs of plates, so i am not complaining about spending the $60 on it... now my darling husband wants to know what to do with it. surely…

I took a week's break from running...
...because i knocked my knees up pretty good falling down some stairs. (don't ask - all i will say no more heels for me ) Now, a bit bruised still (especially my ego) I've done some 5k runs - seen as i usually do 30-40k a week, they shouldn't pose a problem, but I am struggling. big time. like i can't find my pace…

goals, ideas and dreams...
In a couple of weeks, it will be my second birthday since i decided to lose weight, and like last year, i won't have met my goal. Again. (Numerically i am just not overweight anymore, but my aim was lower.) When i mentioned this to my husband, he realized his goal wasn't going to happen by then either. We both made a pact:…

Running hills...
Today I ran my first half marathon distance in about 2:15 (training run, not a race). Seen as that was my goal for the past few months, I figure it's time for something else. Seen as the roads I run on are more or less flat, i am eyeing a forest trail with lots of hills. Probably about 9-11k return trip, which would be…

running (form) drills anyone?
ok, typically me, instead of going and just doing something, i borrowed 1000 books on it first. don't get me wrong, this is my second year running, and i am up to 30-40k a week these days, but mostly i still consider myself a newbie. anyhow, thus far, i've always looked at form as being an idea you aim at whilst out for…

Running & carbs? (Macros?)
I've been tired and irritable lately. Blamed it on lack of sleep, but looking at it, the time is sleep hasn't actually changed. I'm constantly eating, so lack of calories can't be the culprit either. But when I felt instantly better after eating a banana today, I started wondering whether my avoiding carbs is starting to…

so i got myself a pair of vibram fivefingers...
... and they are probably the most comfortable shoes ever to putter around the house in. well, except for weedy lawns, when you end up plucking clover and dandelions from between your toes. anyhow, the idea is to start running in them. the guy at the store was very informative, and it being a running store, i was…

"Maybe we're not eating enough?"
My husband asked me this, with hope filled eyes, after reading an article on Hugh Jackman's training regime. There it stated Hugh exercised 11 hours a week, ate 5000 calories daily - and is 198lbs at 6% body fat. i didn't know how to burst his bubble. So, ok, they weigh the same. my husband cycles upwards of 11 hours a…

if i were on a 1200 calorie diet....
... i would have to admit to myself that there are 1200 calories in each of these: 12 tbsp of peanut butter 12 tbsp of mayonnaise 17 eggs 6 dilly bars 3/4 delissio pizza 10 cups of 2% milk 10kg of cucumber 240g of toblerone just boggles my mind sometimes....

The difference a bit of walking makes...
I was just commenting to my husband about how I am not in the same shape I was in last year. I run a bit more actually, but I have more aches and pains. 1 year of age doesn't really explain it to me, so what else has changed? Diet, weight, all about the same. But as my dog has gotten older, he struggles walking to the end…

What is it with pace? (Running)
So I try and do a fast 5k, manage 33mins and change. Then, 2 days later, I go on my longest run yet, and in doing so beat my 5k time by a minute, run my fastest ever 8k and finish 13k with an average of 6:38 min/km whereas before it was always around 6:50. My pace actually kept getting faster the longer I ran. Yes, it was…

Nike+ as answer to shabby GPS?
I run in a bit of a forest, it's a laughable bit, but in summer, especially when it's cloudy, my GPS skips all over the place. It's gotten bad enough that i had to switch off the voice feedback on my running app (runkeeper, iphone 3G), because being told you're doing 75mph just isn't exactly motivating. it's not app…

Who else has a monkey at home?
Monkey see, monkey do, monkey lose weight. That was true for quite some time, then I started weight training. Monkey started taking protein powder (in addition to his normal diet) Monkey's weight loss stalled. Monkey grew upset, monkey complained, then monkey ran out of notches in his belt. OOOOOH  No matter…

Yet another TDEE question...
OK, so i did a bunch of TDEE calculations and they come out anywhere between 2350 and 2540. the lowest of that minus 15% gets me around 1850 calories a day. (current 163lbs, goal 135-140) i know you're supposed to eat the calculated amount, and ignore exercise calories. but, if i do that, i end up netting below 1200 every…

Protein Food List
Ok, I had some time to kill, and i like making lists. So I came up with a list of protein foods, sorted by how many calories per gram of protein they contain: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AsAlf_zTqhR2dFFsQlpOSGtDa0xYQ3F0cnFZd01jV3c&usp=sharing i only included a bunch of things found around my kitchen, plus…

how did you start running on more days?
I ran 3-4 days a week last year. took a break because of pneumonia, then started again this February. now i am about 3-4 weeks away from running 10k (according to my training plan). i'm not really all that concerned with the 10k, but i want to add more days of running and increase my weekly distance. right now i average…

Runners, do you lace straight? ;-p
Just read the Lydiard training plan for marathons (way not there yet) and it refers to lacing your running shoes "The Lydiard Way" which apparently is also called "Straight bar lacing" and is supposed to relieve pressure to the top of the foot. http://www.fieggen.com/shoelace/straightbarlacing.htm That has been one of my…

no squat rack...
i've got a barbell and dumbbells, but no squat rack. so far i am not using that much weight for my barbell squats, but i've read that it's not recommended to pick the barbell up off the floor for doing squats (which i can see would be an issue with heavier weights, getting them up and over your head and into position...).…
