pedometer & calorie adjustment.

Ok, so i know the basics on adding calories, exercise and activity level (yes, even based on steps). and i don't often actually count calories, so it's rather academic anyhow...
however, i see the fitbit calorie adjustments and was wondering if there was a way to get the same effect using a pedometer app such as runtastic?
reason being, that part time i am a volunteer dog walker, and the other half of my life i am a graphic designer. some days more this, others more that. i could just take an average reading over a week and adjust my activity level, but if i could find a brainiac solution to adjusting it daily without spending money on an actual fitbit (haha, i'd get so much other stuff first) that might be fun
there was the thought of setting my calorie goal to BMR and then just using whatever runtastic spit out. but even just after an hour today, i can tell those calories are way inflated.
