  • Hi all! I lost 70+ pounds going low-carb and have kept it off for more than 6 years now. I went vegetarian 2-1/2 years ago and have still kept my carbs to "natural" ones (I avoid pasta and eat only low-carb breads). My husband and I are looking to go vegan/WFPB now. I'm afraid to start eating too many carbs, though! So…

  • Glassofroses... Wow! You're one busy woman! Good for you! I agree with your advice. Try everything to find what you like. Then do it. If something new comes along, try it, too. Sometimes you need to change things up. Sometimes, you'll say, "Nope... I like what I'm doing now." Both ways, you stay busy, and that's what…
  • Hi all! My name is Debi. I'm 54 and live in the Netherlands (but was born and raised in Detroit!) with my husband, two daughters (17 and 13), a cat, two bunnies and a very naughty dog. In Feb, 2012, I decided I didn't like being 200 pounds, so I went low carb and lost 70-something pounds. Since then, I've gained back a…
  • I'm not sure how to go about doing that here (I live in the Netherlands), and I'm really just wondering if I'm getting a somewhat accurate reading.
  • I had my husband take that measurement.
  • Well... The number actually dropped! Ahhh! I think I must be doing something wrong. The suprailliac only measurement says 17.9, but using the multiple spot measurements dropped to 11.5. Maybe I should find a professional to help.
  • Thank you so much! I'll check out the other sites, too.
  • Unfortunately, this may be my only option! That or just giving up on homemade nut butters for awhile. :-(
  • Ooo! I just found the ninja on the German Amazon site... But the basic version (with no attachments) costs 114 euros!! (That's $126 according to today's exchange rate. Afraid that's out of my current price range. :-(
  • They won't ship electronics overseas, and the power cord is incompatible. The US uses 110, and we have 220 amp/watt/whatever the units are called. I searched the Dutch sites and couldn't find any kind of blender called a ninja. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's not available in some way/shape/form, but i…
  • I like the look of the Ninje, too, but i could't find it over here.
  • Thanks all! As for the homemade vs. bought... I like mixing the nuts and sometimes adding other things. One of my favorites includes macademias, pistachios and brasil nuts with a touch of honey. Yum!
  • Ha ha ha! Oops! Guess I should have given that a bit more thought... Thanks for the ideas, everyone. I have replace my blender soon! I miss making nut butters...
  • I did it! I did it, I did it, I did it! I ran 10K this morning! Thank you all so much for your advice!
  • Thank you for the feedback. I set out this morning with the goal of 4 miles, and I made it 4.35 miles feeling pretty darn good! Yes, my heart rate got up there, but not until the 2.5 mile mark (which is good for me), and I slowed to a walk for a bit to get it back down. Then, I started back at a slower pace. While the run…
  • Okay... Time to slow down! I've been trying to run with my husband who insists we're practically walking anyway... Of course, he's been running since high school and is still in pretty good condition (lifts weights, does martial arts and runs...with me). I'll just head out on my own and let the snails outpace me! ;-)
  • I thought about that, too. When I worked my way up to 5K, I was able to manage 8-9 minute miles.
  • I agree with the muscles-holding-water theory. Don't give up on the Pilates! I go three-four times a week and feel great after each class. I'm more limber, and my arms and legs are more toned. My core muscles are stronger than when I started, too. Give it time, and the weight will start dropping again, and you'll like the…
  • Hi! Debi here. I was born in Detroit and lived there for the first 37 years of my life. Then, like the silly wife that I am, I followed my (also American) husband to the Netherlands in 2001. We stayed in Nederland from 2001 to 2003, then moved to Ireland where my youngest was born. After her birth, I gained a LOT of…
  • Great thread! I'm a (former) American, born and raised in Detroit, living in the Netherlands since 2001 (with a short pause where we lived in Ireland). I became Dutch in 2012 and had to renounce my American citizenship (I can totally sympathize with all the paperwork and hassle that requires!). It's been great reading…
  • I managed an almost-3 mile run this morning... then came home to eat cinnabuns! The run felt great, and the cinnabuns were heaven. All is good with the world.
  • I married Mr. Muscular with a good job... would trade him in a instant for someone with a sense of humor and a heart!
  • cheriboon, First of all, I'm so sorry for your loss. I completely understand what you're going through, though. My father died on the 17th of last month, and I spent the last week and a half with my family in the states going to his funeral, then eating everything in sight (with the rest of them doing the same thing). My…
  • I'd like to see this, too. I don't do Yoga, but Pilates kicks my bum 3-4 times a week!
  • Thanks! I'm stumped, too. Guess it's a trip to the doctor... *sigh*
  • Great article! Hard to take, maybe, but good info. Guess I have to figure out how to create a bigger deficit.
  • You're completely right. I haven't tried free weights and shouldn't write them off without at least trying. It's just that at my gym, the trainers point you to the machines and set you on your merry way. My husband lifts weights (and has for years), but he belongs to a different gym, so he can't help me learn what to do…
  • This morning, I ran 5K then went to my Pilates class. Know what? I feel GREAT! Running and Pilates make me feel strong, healthy, flexible and ... well, just so good! Maybe it's best to just stick with what makes you happy. I know I'll do these things, and I'm healthier for being active. Yes, I know lifting would be good…
  • Ah, I understand! Actually, I ran one 5K last March -- that was it! I've thought of doing another, but haven't worked up the courage. ;-)
  • I upped my cals by about 150-200 back in late Jan-early Feb. The weight started going up almost immediately, so I dropped them back down. Unfortunately, the weight gain never really stopped. Sure, I may drop part of a pound one day, but then I gain it plus more the next. The general trend keeps going up.
