  • No. Only 5% of people who lose by methods other than surgery keep it off. Over 60% of people who have had either gastric bypass or sleeve keep the majority of their weight loss off. These are recent numbers, and easy to find. Over the past decade those 2 surgeries have gotten far safer. Many of the early high failure rates…
  • I think it's all terribly complicated, and that I am not an obesity researcher or expert. But, I do believe that there isn't any one cause for obesity. It's not simple. For one person it could be untreated hypothyroidism (mememememe!) and all of the hormonal/emotional chaos it causes, for another it's the result of…
  • And your opinion is wrong. Fat shaming has been shown to be ineffective and counterproductive. Body shame can lead to weight gain, not loss. No, that may not make logical sense, but humans are messy and often don't make sense. http://www.nature.com/ijo/journal/v37/n6/abs/ijo2012156a.html…
  • Oh dear lord YES IT IS. I don't think that ANYONE who isn't your doctor should be giving you advice. If you are unsure, go get a 2nd or 3rd opinion. From, you know, other doctors.
  • Damn, it's too bad that I read this too late. Alas, I am now injured. A month ago I twisted my ankle and broke off the tip of my fibula. But, hang on, I am confused? I didn't do this running, in fact, in the past several years of running I've not injured myself during that activity. Even when I started and was 75 pounds…
  • There was some sarcasm, but not really meanness. See, OP? THIS is being mean ^^^^ Like, legit mean. LA mean, even.
  • Awww, cheer up. It just means that you can wear a shorter kilt!
  • Pffff. He made his reputation and living by being one. That show really had no likable characters. I mean, look at a show like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The characters are all horrible horrible people. The only one who is not a totally selfish jerk is Charlie. And, well, LOL, Charlie. They ARE entertaining selfish…
  • Who was kind of a jerk.
  • LOL Makes statement about the PCness (or not) about talking about race, but says he doesn't want to talk about race.
  • Okay, so here is the thing, I could train for this in 4 months. BUT, I have a solid base already built specifically for these kinds of activities (and my pack is lighter). I trail run so that I can hike with a pack. I am a strong powerlifter. The difference that being strong makes is HUGE. For instance, last year I went on…
  • It's the pack. The number of miles in a day that you can expect to hike with a pack on is much smaller than without. It's not just because of the cardio involved, but it's also rougher on your body. You hold yourself different, your gait changes, etc. It has an impact going uphill and downhill both. While that amount of…
  • Crap, does that mean I need to give back my TM headband, since I'm not real and they aren't real and it was all just a dream? I KNEW those pre-run Tim Tams were too good to be true. Oh well, it was nice not-knowing you guys. But, wait, what does it say about me when all of my favorite imaginary friends are *kitten*? OP: I…
  • It worked so well that you are posting pictures from 30 years ago rather than current ones. Seems legit.
  • And, while the baby may get what it needs, it also could probably use a mother who is healthy and has not broken down her bones/muscles during its gestation. I didn't gain weight during my pregnancy with my youngest son. Which was fine, because I was FAT. This woman is already underweight. Which means that her results will…
  • The set weight barbells are usually in increments of 10lbs. There is no way that I (or most people who have been lifting for a while) can jump in those increments doing OHPs. With the standard barbell you can add on little micro plates, even. I use the cage for OHP. Even before I had my home gym, that's where I did them.…
  • Dang. You must not have anything real to say. And, honestly, she is one of a slim number of long term success stories. People dream about making the kind of progress that she has fought for. Not only do you have nothing real to say, but what you said is obviously silly and wrong.
  • I'm in school, so I can't have it up all too often. In the morning I pack my pre-logged food for the day, and my prepped dinner if I have late classes/work. Then that's what I eat. On the weekends I have to be a bit more flexible. Even on my higher calorie day I tend to pre-log, just to make sure that I will hit my…
  • These were my thoughts as well. There are many different strength programs, and they vary in effectiveness. Some bill themselves as strength, but are really more cardio than anything else. More time performing an inadequate program will not be useful. It would be great to hear what you have been doing in order to help…
  • I am planning on doing a lot of my own food dehydration for this year's backpacking trips. I guess it's pretty easy, and opens up a ton of variety in meals. There are lots of resources online to help you figure it out. I don't plan on losing weight on any of my trips, but, I'm going to figure out my caloric needs for each…
  • Yep. SL relies heavily on compound lifts, your machine mostly isolates muscle groups. While it won't work for SL, and workouts may take longer due to having to do more exercises to get a well rounded workout in, as you already have it you can and should use it. At the very least it will get you going.
  • Yep, it's a problem.
  • Initially, I started doing cardio to be able to hike, and to help with weightloss. Lifting was added in early so that I could minimize my LBM losses. Now, wow, where to start. I exercise because it enables me to go backpacking, hiking, kayaking, ALL OF THE ADVENTURES! I lift to help with that and because I love what it's…
  • No, that was the OLD thinking. Now cardio will make you gain weight. Sorry, Johnny. May as well get yourself some bigger swim trunks and just go with it.
