Definitely free weights, imho. I think intense cardio is seriously overrated. A nice, brisk, 30 minute walk every other day and a good diet will let you lose all the weight you want. As for saunas, there's research showing they may provide quite a few serious health benefits (including many of the same things you'd get…

Also date. lol, yeah-- I tried to think of some less suggestive way to say that for like five minutes.

Date. And I want to see the fire house. And slide down the pole if that's a real thing.

You were the best Captain.

I don't really notice people in the gym. Except this 70-something guy who hangs out in the locker room with no pants. That guy I've noticed.

Not a chance. But it would be a valiant struggle.

I never interpreted it as, 'you need to lift'... but more as, 'if you are lifting, you should be lifting the heaviest weight you can manage'. A lot of people kind of go through the motions with resistance training, and a lot of people-- particularly women-- will use tiny weights and machines that aren't actually forcing…

I try to be descriptive.

I'm only interested in strawberry yogurt.

lol!

I've heard that, too, and I think it's bs. I mean, if you're training for a marathon or something, sure-- go outside and get used to the real thing. But for just burning calories? The treadmill's fine.

Is it Ashtanga yoga? I've never done the one you mentioned there specifically, but I've done plenty of Ashtanga routines that I'd be comfortable calling weight training. That *kitten* is hard. :p

Hey, congratulations on your weight loss. Seventy pounds is a lot. Tachikata posted a link to Scooby's site early in the thread-- that's a great source if you want to put together a weight routine you can do at home with minimal equipment. http://http://scoobysworkshop.com/beginning-workout-plan/ I personally think this is…

Not to brag, but I've been told I look like Samwise Gamgee from Lord of the Rings. Hairy feet and everything. Rowr.

I think upper/lower splits are ideal, personally-- here's a great 3 day rotation: http://www.aworkoutroutine.com/the-muscle-building-workout-routine/

HIIT is great for this.

Bodyweight exercises are great. And if you have weight to lose, they'll be even better. Just those (and a squared-away diet) will do you for a good long time. When/if you do want to transition over to freeweights, I'd suggest shopping around for dumbells on Craigslist. Don't ever buy them new-- you'll get them for a…

I think I have a chance.

Ideally, you want to be doing exercise that you enjoy. If you like the running, by all means, keep it up. If you enjoyed the weight training, do that. If there's nothing that grabs you, there's absolutely nothing wrong with just taking a 30 minute walk every other day and managing weight with your food intake alone. You…

Not to be a downer or anything, but I'd be really surprised if you're spending more than 400 calories on that. I use about 400 running for a solid hour.

I suspect you could show a similar link between increasing waistlines and *any* diet food. People buy "diet foods" because they want to lose weight, but many of them still eat too much. People who take in even a moderate surplus of calories slowly get heavier as they age. I drink diet soda all the time and haven't noticed…

I'd read the book, but the scene still shocked me. :P You never hear the cool, heroic character let out a blood curdling scream of terror and agony, you know? It was seriously disturbing.

175 then, 175 now.

I'd just like to add something after popping into your food log. This isn't meant to be rude, it's just the truth. If you're really tracking everything you've eaten in the last few days there, then I can see why you've fallen off the wagon and rebounded in the past. The last few days, you've been eating less than half the…

Table push-aways. I know you said 'in addition to eating lighter', but the calorie deficit really is the only meaningful point, and you can do that without moving. Apart from that, I think weight training is great for people trying to lose weight. A five by five program would probably be ideal to start, if your knees will…

Chickentuna (the woman in the photo) is 39, IIRC. She's just in ridiculous shape. *Edit, nope-- she's 46, if this page is correct. Wow, that's amazing.

Judging from the trailer, it looks like they're just blaming widespread obesity on sugar, which is ridiculous. The BBC had an interesting documentary series called 'The Men Who Made Us Fat', which was a pretty useful and critical look at the food industry, the way it markets calorie-dense foods to children, the ways that…
