  • I don’t stretch, but I do spend a few minutes doing something similar to this: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.runnersworld.com/the-body-shop/five-exercises-to-do-before-every-run%3famp My hips and back also love it when I do some yoga routines separate from my running and weightlifting workouts.
  • I've done 30+ half marathons and I rarely run more than 3x a week. Right now I am keeping mileage low as I focus on strength training. As my half marathon gets closer, I will build mileage and scale back my strength training to 2x per week.
  • I am not sure which way is better. But MFP is designed to use your fitness tracker to gauge your activity for the entire day and determine the calories you burn. When you put in exercise, it calculates the calories based on the type of exercise and duration. To avoid double counting calories, it ignores the fitness tracker…
  • I am planning on doing the Indy Mini the first Saturday of May and then the Niagara Women's Half the first Sunday in June. I have recently started the program in the book Strong by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove (the same people who did NROL). I am loving the program! Each workout takes about an hour and has 4 parts: a…
  • @briancb - what you described seems similar to the approach used in the book Strong by Lou Schuler and Alwyn Cosgrove. Are you familiar with it? It's the program I have recently started and I really like it. It doesn't start out with the large barbell movements but it gets there.
  • I think @rybo has a good point - build core strength. This link has some great exercises: https://www.runnersworld.com/strength-training/10-essential-strength-exercises-for-runners/slide/1
  • My husband and I went cheap with our treadmill (about $700 if I recall). We have no regrets. Obviously it's not as nice as gym treadmills. We try to run outside as much as possible, but the treadmill has worked well when needed.
  • I have young kids so I have invested in home equipment so I can get in a good workout while my kids nap or after they go to bed. It works best for my schedule. We have probably accumulated close to $3000 worth of equipment over the last 4 years. That is a savings over what my husband and I would have to pay in gym…
  • a) What gear do you have? Treadmill, power rack with pull-up bar and lat attachment, standard bar, dumbbell handles, a modest collection of plates, a short aerobic step, homemade 16" step, exercise ball, yoga mat b) Which room do you use? All the weight equipment is in a small room in the basement. The treadmill is in the…
  • The beef farm I grew up on didn't use antibiotics for growth/feed efficiency. When some of the herd showed signs of sickness, we would generally give all the cows a treatment. Depending on the sickness and medication, sometimes the sick cows would get a higher dose or different medication than the ones not showing…
  • I take a daily prenatal multivitamin, which my doctor recommends for all women of child bearing age. My tend to buy the One-a-Day brand.
  • Because your small organic garden is the perfect model for how all food should be produced :/
  • Reasons for increased prices of organic: - organic can be more labor intensive than conventional - usually has a lower yield - because they can (supply/demand) - organic pesticides (your bolded statement isn't accurate). There is a whole market of non-synthetic pesticides farmers can use to still be considered organic. At…
  • I once met a girl who thought organic was synonymous with diet (as in lower calorie and/or fat). I just gave her the WTF face.
  • Round-up ready crops allows for no-till growing methods. No-till reduces erosion and promotes healthy soil. Organic methods includes a lot of tilling, which leads to erosion and strips the topsoil of nutrients.
  • Very well said. I am pretty much the same way. I grew up on a farm (non-organic) so my take on the issue is a bit different than the mainstream. A lot of the pro-organic hype describes farmers as irresponsible users of chemicals. Not only is that cost prohibitive, but farmers actually do care about keeping their farmland…
  • Most advice for beginning runners is to focus on getting a lot of miles in before working on speed. Just keep adding miles and you will see your speed improve without doing any speed work.
  • I typically do not buy clothes that I cannot wear. I did recently buy a pair of jeans online that I thought would fit me (I have other jeans of the same brand so I ordered the same size). They arrived, I tried them on and they are too tight. I have decided to keep them since I like them and they will fit someday. I…
  • There is a great NROL4W group on Facebook - check it out! In it there is a FAQ section that has some quotes from the authors of the book and they basically state that if the book were written today a large amount of the nutrition recommendations would be thrown out. I personally use the MFP calorie recommendations (which…
  • Before I got pregnant I was in some of the best shape of my life. I was still overweight, but was 40 pounds below my all time high and losing weight at a decent rate. I was determined to not gain any excess weight during my pregnancy. For the first 6 weeks I did great. Then the morning sickness kick in. I was lucky in the…
  • OP, I have the same issues. I have fallen off the wagon many times because of it. I try to fill up on protein - it helps a little bit with fullness and fighting off cravings. I fit in treats that I crave when I have the calories for it. When having a treat, I have a smaller portion and eat it very slowly - savoring it. It…
  • It seems some women drop loads of weight while breastfeeding. Sometimes it is without too much effort at all! Unfortunately I am not one of those lucky ones. I had my son back in November. After the holidays, I started to exercise again and count my calories in hope of dropping some weight. I was producing enough to feed…
  • I don't restrict carbs. I mainly focus on staying within my allotted calories and hitting a protein target. If I do that, then I my fats and carbs tend to stay in a decent balance. From a mental standpoint, focusing on my protein goal allows me to think about what I can eat versus dwelling on what I can't have. This…
  • I have done 31 half marathons and the only time I have ever lost a toenail was when I was 17 and bought the running shoes that looked cute and were trendy. It didn't even take a lot of miles to lose the nail...
  • I agree. I was limiting my calories and losing about a pound per week. I was struggling to pump enough milk for my baby. Then I strayed from calorie counting for a few days and ate more. I noticed my milk supply increase. So now I have reassessed my calorie goals and have increased my intake. I will worry about losing the…
  • I am assuming that your steps are automatically logged with a fitbit or something similar. With fitbit, when you log cardio exercise MFP ignores all data except step count for the time period you are exercising, so you will not be double counting. It is then your discretion if you want to log your walking workouts. I log…
  • I did some weightlifting years ago. This doesn't feel like a new exercise type of pain, it definitely feels like I am doing something wrong. I am not expecting much useful advice without a video. I will get my husband to help me get a video this weekend.
  • First time racers need to know the proper procedures to start the race. Some races have assigned corrals, usually designated by your bib based on the expected finish time you gave when you signed up. Please start in the appropriated corral (and most races allow you to drop back if you feel you are slower than you…
  • I am 6 workouts into the program. I am only lifting 2x per week since I am also training for a half marathon.
