  • I honestly wouldn't attempt it if I were you. There is no point in putting your health at risk when you can lose weight just as effectively with a consistent calorie deficit on a weekly basis. I suffer from hypoglycaemia too and would never consider doing the 5:2 method.
  • Hi there! Welcome to MFP! My start weight was 336 pounds so I know how you feel just now. But you're in the perfect place to lose the weight! I will give you a few pieces of advice that I picked up along the way: 1. Buy a food scale and use it. Weigh everything (and measure liquids using measuring spoons) 2. Log…
  • Hi John! I'm in Dundee, so just up the road from you! I hope you find the site useful to monitor your intake for your Type II diabetes! Wishing you every success!
  • If you are using the website version, go to Check In and there is an option at the bottom of the page to 'Edit Previous Entries'. Click on that and you can change your start weight.
  • I, too, have had severe fibromyalgia for about 18 years and am currently experiencing a bad flare up after breaking my ankle. I would recommend some gentle exercise, like walking or swimming. You can build up the time you exercise for, but start off with small amounts and build it up very gradually. I have started pilates…
  • I use a Salter digital scale. It has been the best purchase I have made to reach my goals. I would go for a digital scale, which measures in grams (as it's more accurate), with a tare (or zero) function. All other functions such as whether you could fit a plate of your choosing on it are purely up to yourself!
  • You didn't fall off the wagon, you just took a little detour along the long road of weight management. This is a lifetime endeavor, so little bumps along the road will happen. The most important thing is that your month's detour didn't turn into 3 months, or a year. You have all the tools you need to get back on track! So,…
  • The best way to avoid sodium in general, is to eat less processed food. However, unless you have a medical condition which means you need to watch your sodium levels I wouldn't worry about it too much.

  • I have reduced my thyroxine dose from 325 micrograms to 150 micrograms just by losing weight. My doctor believes the dose will eventually 'bottom out' and I'll need to be on some thyroxine forever, but any improvement in my thyroid function is a very pleasant and unexpected surprise! I would just keep getting blood tests…
  • ^This! Meal timing makes no difference at all. If you find you do better without breakfast, don't eat breakfast!
  • Is this because someone called you out on eating 1500 calories a day earlier, by any chance, OP? I have certainly never seen any of the highly successful people on here who offer help and advice on these forums 'lash out' at anyone in a fit of jealousy (and I'm a long time lurker). Please, point us in the direction of such…
  • This happens to me if I restrict my calories too much. If you have your calorie goal set at 'lose 2 pounds a week', change it to no more than 1 pound a week, or even half a pound a week as you only have 18 pounds to lose. Excessive restriction of calories will encourage binge eating and is not beneficial in the long run…
  • It sounds like your daughter has developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome following the Epstein-Barr infection (mono) to me. Although the vast majority of people recover fully after a mono infection, a small percentage don't and contract CFS. I was one of the unfortunate few. Getting her Vitamin D levels normalised is a good…
  • My phone app just automatically updated and I now have this feature. It's ridiculous! The advice is outdated and is going to lead to a raft of newbies posting on the forums freaking out about unnecessary things. Urgh!! And it feels like I'm being nagged at. I don't respond well to nagging! :grumble:
  • I started on here in a wheelchair and I am still on crutches, curse them! Weight loss is all about your calorie deficit, not how much you can exercise. Keep within your calories and you'll lose weight. You've had some good ideas to keep mobile though, which is important!
  • Bumpity bump for useful information! Thanks!
  • My new savoury snack of choice is dry roasted chickpeas from Holland and Barrett. They have 3 different flavours and have a very satisfying crunch!
  •   Congratulations to you both!
  • There is no right or wrong answer to this. Do whatever works for you! Some people eat all their calories within a certain time frame (intermittent fasting); some graze all day; some prefer 3 larger meals and no snacks. As long as you are within your calorie goal, it honestly makes no difference when you eat in terms of…
  • HRMs are only accurate for steady state cardio. They won't give you an accurate calorie burn over an entire day. For that, you would be better using an activity monitor (such as Fitbit). However, remember that all of these devices give you an estimate based on the calories burned by a person with your statistics. I love my…
  •  Perfect gif!!
  • Brilliant post! Congrats on your loss so far! :drinker: :drinker:
  • I started on here in a wheelchair. Then graduated to crutches. I'm still on crutches. I am practically housebound and have developed a debilitating illness. None of these stopped me. At all! If you want to lose weight, eat in a calorie deficit. That's all you need to do. If you want to get fitter, start off with walking…
  • Thank you for this post. I like that you pointed out the positives, but also admitted the pitfalls and were honest about things you would have done differently! Great job on the weight loss. I hope you continue to be successful with your new goals!
  • Never weigh yourself on different scales. The only way to ensure accuracy is to weigh yourself on the same scales, on the same piece of hard floor, wearing the same clothes (or none), at the same time of day (first thing in the morning after using the bathroom, preferably). These parameters will give you as accurate a…
  • When I started on here, I was severely hypothyroid (my thyroid medications have been decreased as I've lost weight). It certainly hasn't affected my progress past 10 pounds! Don't listen to other people saying you can't do it! Eat at a moderate deficit, throw in a bit of exercise and you will be successful!
