  • Mark Allen the former tri-athlete has an interesting article on this subject. http://www.markallenonline.com/maoArticles.aspx?AID=2
  • When I was rehabing my hand from a torn tendon surgery, I obviously lost a lot of my pull-up ability. I started with the chair, but found out quickly I was becoming a little too reliant on it. I then started doing jumping pull-ups and focused on the negative on the way down. As they become easier, don't jump as forcefully…
  • Infinite Intensity by Ross Enamait and Corps Strength by Paul Roarke are two great books for short money. Both are dumbbell/kettlebell focused and can be done in the basement/garage gym. As far as reps/sets, it depends on what your goals are.
  • Put two dumb bells by each foot squat down (use good form), stand up, curl them up to your shoulder, then press overhead. Repeat squat, stand, curl, press, x how many times you want to go. The faster you go the more intense it will be. That's just one combination I use.

He also sells some really good material really cheap ($25). One of his books, "Never Gymless" is great for when there is no access to gym. It comes with a fifty day template for…

  • Just be wary of quality. There are plenty of bad knock-offs out there. You want straps that are well-made and have strong anchor points. In my humble opinion, TRX and VPS are both excellent quality. Good luck.

  • I don't own the TRX, I have the Vegas Pro Straps. (Same concept bodyweight resistance). I use them for both strength and for circuits. Some days I use a weight vest for further resistance. They are extremely versatile and sturdy. I currently have mine hanging from my pull-up bar in the basement, but have brought them on…
