  • I've been a "gym-rat" most of my life and haven't felt intimidated. However, I don't have self-esteem problems and may have missed it. My husband on the other hand, does have some self-esteem issues and has felt intimidated in the pool. He has a broken back from a car accident and has had 2 back surgeries. He does the…
  • You need to allow yourself to "mess up" once in a while. You can't change the past, only the future so, let it go. Last weekend I had the most scrumptious chocolate mousse cake. It's one day, I didn't even log my food that day, I figured, what was the point. Monday was a new day, a new week and I jumped back into my…
  • We all have different body types. I'm 5'11". I've weighed as little as 125 (too thin) and the smallest I've been is a D. Normally I'm a DD. In high school, when I was running track, I had to wear two underwire bras to keep from being in pain. Like someone else said, buy a good bra and I'll add, embrace your curves.
  • You need a distraction after dinner! Sometimes I eat because I'm bored or I'm doing an activity that I've always snacked while doing. Change up what you do after dinner, save some calories and plan a snack for later. I know, most of the time when I eat like that, there is a reason besides hunger. You need to find that…
  • Great advice. We women tend to put off weight training, particularly our upper bodies until osteoporosis has already set in. Just look at women over 50, they are beginning to to have hunched shoulders. Weight training is good for your bones, your posture, body fat content, metabolism, etc. Many advantages. Don't forget the…
  • There really are no hard and fast rules and you will get many different answers as to timing. People in Europe routinely eat after 7 and their obesity rates are much lower than hours. It's what you eat that's important. Eliminate processed foods, use whole foods as much as possible. Watch your sugar and fat intake. Get…
  • I don't like ANY of the stationary cardio machines. However, if I have to do one, I usually choose the elliptical. I even have one at home. Like someone else said, start really slowly, if it has an adjustable incline, make sure it's at zero. I also have to have some sort of distraction so I watch something on my ipod,…
  • After reading all of the pros and cons, I decided to give coconut oil a try. Of course, I bought an institutional sized, Costco jug of it! I find I can taste it in everything and I'm not sure I like my Mexican food tasting like it's some sort of Thai-Mex fusion. Oh well, it does taste good in the Asian foods but I'll stick…
  • I have at least four different types of hot sauce in the fridge. I'm also a jalapeno addict. My daughter says I've burned out my taste-buds. If it does somehow speed up the metabolism it's a bonus.
  • The shoes I got fitted with were $100, which is pretty reasonable when it comes to running shoes. All shoes offer a different amount of support, flexibility, etc., so that seems like bad advice to say that everyone can wear whatever pair they want if they just run the right way. I would think you need to run the right way…
  • Oh sweetie, come back and tell me that when you have my 54 year old feet, arthritis and bad ankles!
  • Perfect! I don't own a scale either, they make me crazy. I plan on weighing at the gym next week. From reading your posts, you sound like you've got a pretty good attitude. Just don't make me come looking for you when you get back. Have fun!
  • I have but I tried them on at a local store first.
  • Someone already said this but I want to re-emphasize it, find a "face to face" support group. While this site can be helpful and supportive, there are many people that still have serious issues with food and give bad advice. Food can be used just like drugs to make us feel better and mask our emotions, to deal with it you…
  • I have high arches and arthritis from spraining my ankle too many times. I can't wear running shoes for high impact workouts, not enough padding. Where I live we have a shop that will analyze your foot and give you recommendations because everybody is different. Fortunately you don't have to buy their expensive shoes. I,…
  • I've always wondered about how much weight I could gain on a cruise! I figured I'd have to pack all of my stretchy clothes. Make a plan. Maybe try to fill up on salad, fruits and veggies before you hit the more fattening items. Eat slowly, talk to interesting people while eating. Don't deny yourself completely, give…
  • Woohoo!
  • I would have said the same at your age but, at my age, calories add up. The verdict is out on caffeine, I gave it up for about 6 months and the only difference was, my brain didn't start functioning until about 10am. Soooo, I'll stick with my coffee, tea and fake sugar. We all have to die of something, odds are greatest…
  • Looks like you need to spread your calories out more too. Lots of things play into weight loss and muscle growth. You need to keep your blood sugar level constant. At least eat three, healthy meals per day. Otherwise you're just going to look skinny.
  • You tried the bike? That's what I did after a severely sprained ankle. Otherwise, if you don't have access to a pool, Pilates is good.
  • I'm curious too. I don't like unsweetened coffee and I have to have my coffee!
  • I'm 54 and hot. Oh wait, it's just a hot flash. Never mind.
  • Oh yeah, been there. When you put on weight, you feel more lethargic and it's easy to make excuses to skip the exercise. Take it slow, maybe walking, then add some strength training, then add 20 minutes on the elliptical, etc. You'll begin to feel better and it will get easier. The first step is what's important and set…

  • took the words out of my mouth!
  • When I was young, I always tried to workout when I was sick. Now that I'm older and I hope wiser, I've discovered that my recovery time is less if I listen to my body and rest. Most viruses run their course in 7 days, after about 3 you usually feel good enough to do light workouts.
  • Since I no longer have to haul kids around, I bought a cute little Chevy Sonic. I love it!
  • You go girl! You've taken the first step which is the hardest. I'm a firm believer in "cheating" once in a while, it keeps us from feeling deprived. I also don't believe in punishing myself for being "bad", I just go back to eating properly the next day. I don't exercise to burn off excess calories and I don't eat the…
  • I haven't actually asked for moral support around here, but I've noticed that people aren't always...shall we say...supportive? I really think that websites like this feed people's eating disorders and exercise addictions. I know exactly what you're talking about. I am much older than you but, when I was in high school I…
  • Depends on your bone structure, cut of the clothes, brand, etc. I've been as low as 125 and rarely worn anything smaller than a 10. I have hips and that dictates the size. I'm large busted so on the top I usually wear a 12 or 14 there. My goal right now is to get back to 140. At that weight I wear 10's and 12's. The thing…
