Keep in mind your Garmin is going to fluff your ego. Mine says I should be doing a 1:25 half, and I'm a 1:28. I'd try McMillanrunning dot com too and maybe meet halfway :)

Your first race should be to complete, regardless of time. Save the burden of PR'ing for subsequent races. If you must target a time, you should race a 5K and plug your time into a race prediction calculator to see if this is even attainable instead of just picking a finish time because it sounds nice.

If I rest for more than 3 days it means I am either injured or just raced a marathon. But yeah, creakiness is normal even after 1 day of rest. That's why shakeout runs are popular.

I think it is on the lower end of the spectrum of realistic, but would take a lot of consistent work to achieve. I would encourage you to train for smaller goals between now and then. To put your 12k goal in perspective, this is what you'd be running in other distances. Just ignore the marathon one for now.

Running or not, find something that you can do after the big day. Don't lose weight for one event because you'll probably just quit and get fat again once the moment passes.
-
For me, it was taking "me" out of the equation, including myself picking a plan that might be too much or not enough for my ability.

Time and training. I'm nothing special :)

Last summer, I broke into the 50s too soon and it hurt. I backed off and went into my September 2014 marathon with about 45MPW average, two long runs of any significance (16, 18), and ran a 3:30, with various issues that kept me from being 100% happy with the race. I clearly cheated myself in training due to wanting to…

I was good with the slow (I love running slow). We had plenty of time to walk the aid stations and take bathroom breaks. However, the heat and humidity for 5+ hours really kicked my *kitten* :)

Compared to Galen Rupp? Nope. Compared to yourself a year ago? Yep.

Not sure what your current 12K PR is (or any current 5K-HM PR), running history, weight, etc. Taking 1:23 off a 14:00 pace is one thing, taking 1:23 off of a 10:00 is another. Starting speedwork in February for a May race is a little early. Typically 6 weeks is about as long as the benefits last. Need more details to give…
