Finished the Cleveland Marathon! I switched sticks with the 5:10 group, and it was pure hell. The temp was 75-80, and relative humidity of 90%. None of the folks who started with the group made it to the end with me, to include my co-pacer. The last 3mi was all highway with the the sun beating down on you, and there were a ton of people walking. I found a kid who looked like he was really struggling and talked him into running the rest of the way with me. I kept him distracted with conversation and we picked up a lady who was struggling too, and we ran every bit of the last couple miles in together. At the last 100M I told them to give it one final push and they took off. My son was in the announcer booth and VIP tent the whole morning, and when he saw me come down, he jumped out and ran to me and took my pace stick and sprinted in. It was quite the experience. And the two folks who I ran in were waiting and we did a big cheesy group hug. They were so happy, and it made my pacing experience worth it.

Onto 5K training now. My mileage is back into the mid-40s, and focusing on lots of speedwork for the next two weeks, with a controlled race effort on the 25th at the Lou Cox Memorial Day 5K.

Awesome story Doug. So glad you were able to give back to the running community.

    5/1- rest day

Skip ran with me. She finished 1st overall female and ran about a 25:45, she forgot to stop her watch so we got that time from the guy in front of her. It wasn't timed. I did 3.15 (according to my wonderful new Garmin) in 30.01. What a great race, so much fun, wonderful people. Love the placer medals, they were hand made by one of the sponsors. It was gold, the picture doesn't do it justice, it was also on a red rawhide cord. So sorry I didn't get one!

    Way to go Skip. Congratulations!!!

    FANTASTIC!!!!!

@SonicDeathMonkey80 - way to go! I am positive you really helped make the marathon experience significently better for those two you helped at the end. Great job pacing!

@skippygirlsmom - Go Skip! Fun medals too!

@italysharon - beautiful pictures! Santorini is on my ever expanding list of places to visit. I've been meaning to ask you as well where you lived in Italy?

There is only thing I do not like about this group... I feel like a lazy slug on my rest days while everyone else is running. It literally caused me anxiety this morning.... before I rolled over and went back to sleep.

@sonicdeathmonkey80 great pacing - I loved the pix of your little man running ahead of you with the pacer stick.
You said pacing the group was pure hell, too slow?
@italysharon love the picture, what a beautiful country. We just won a contract in Livorno and a few months back I turned down the chance to go for a year. It was supposed to start before Skip was out for the summer, of course it was delayed and the folks are just going now :-( I've done so much work to get everyone there, looks like they might offer to send me for a week to "work" as a thank you.
@9voice9 - nice 5K this weekend congrats on the 3rd in your AG
@lonewolfrunner - you crack me up, but I know what you mean. I took a rest day to take Skip to breakfast before school for her birthday and I feel like a bad runner LOL

@italysharon : That area looks quite hilly - but also very beautiful, really pretty scenery.

@SonicDeathMonkey80: I love the finish photos, so many happy people!

Today I went to a TRX class and spontaneously decided afterwards that since I was already wearing sports clothes, and we focussed on the arms today, I might as well move the rest of my body and go for a run too. Must have been the after-exercise endorphines messing with my head or something like that, because after the first hundred meters I realised how tired I actually was - that, and the fact that running involves moving the arms as well and that was actually really, really hard... I dragged myself through 5k anyway. So now I've decided that means I can spend tomorrow lazily on the couch without feeling guilty when I read about other peoples runs. ;)

Pushed myself on my morning run after my disastrous Sunday run. Ran just over 5k in 34 minutes. Will slow down in subsequent runs this week.

At 36 km out of a marathon on k's this month.

I was good with the slow (I love running slow). We had plenty of time to walk the aid stations and take bathroom breaks. However, the heat and humidity for 5+ hours really kicked my *kitten* :)

@SonicDeathMonkey80 Doug you are a beast, great job!
Still on track for my 200 miles and 10k a day in May, even got a run in last night after a rather large anniversary dinner (and dessert!)
