  • Yes. Definitely. Seems a bit middle-schoolish, but as someone else said, it is what it is. I just don't participate since it's not my thing.
  • Unless you're lifting heavy weights or eating too many calories, you're not going to bulk up. Protein shakes are a quick and easy way to gain calories and nutrients, and protein is very important in a normal daily diet. I rely on them to help me meet my nutritional goals on a fairly regular basis. Not daily, but often…
  • I second the recommendation for using a food scale. I'm so glad I got mine. It revealed that I wasn't eating as much veggies as I thought. And they're cheap. That being said, people that say weight loss is only about calories have never dealt with a metabolic syndrome. For well over 2 years I was exercising and logging my…
  • About once a week. Though I stretch it out. My husband always laughs that I can make a meal from Panera last three days. But yikes, the carbs and SODIUM. Even eating *conservatively* at a restaurant puts one or two things in the red on my food log.
  • The benefits of low carb diets are overhyped and exaggerated--but if you ignore the hype and look at the evidence, there ARE a lot of good reasons behind the concept. Just the extreme fad diets like Atkins are generally unnecessary. Mainly it's just a good idea to be mindful of insulin spikes and carb crashes, but eating a…
  • Thanks everyone for the responses. I am making healthier food choices, and exercising lightly, and I do want to manage weight gain when that becomes an issue, so I'll be logging food. I think for now I'll just not try to push myself, and just eat when I'm actually hungry. If I'm not losing weight, then surely I'm not…
  • Ha, yep, I'm keeping my cookies for the moment. I caught it super early, so at this point I've not had morning sickness or the sense of smell thing kick in yet. I also went to my OBGYN really early; she had already told me I'm high risk because of my age, the PCOS, and a few other factors, so she had told me to come in as…
  • @Miss_1999 - I'm 5'7". Yep, I've been to see my OBGYN, she advised me about the increased risk of miscarriage, and placed me on progesterone. And yes, still taking the metformin. I've been seeing this doctor for a couple years now, and she had advised me long ago that I would stay on the metformin if I became pregnant. I…
  • Yeah, at 230 pounds, I'm still definitely overweight :-/ It seemed hormonal for awhile, because I lost 40 pounds after going on metformin for PCOS a couple years ago, but the weight loss slowed and stopped last year, despite me consistently having trouble eating the recommended daily amount. I started logging again…
  • I usually just ignore any extra calories that accumulate, and stick with my daily limit. I have a hard enough time meeting my calorie goals as it is. If you're worried about not getting enough nutrients and have trouble meeting your daily goals, add in some avocado. I always include those in my smoothies. Peanut or almond…
  • *sigh* I know exactly how you feel, though I don't think my hair loss was related to losing weight, as it was actually the first thing that made me realize my weight was high and my health was crap and that I needed to do something. My hair loss has slowed now that I've lost 40 pounds this past year, but it's still…
  • There have been just as many studies showing the opposite. Look them up sometime. "Just a carb" is a statement that ignores quite a bit. While low glycemic diets are comparable to moderate glycemic diets in terms of weight loss, there have also been studies showing the weight loss to be slightly more efficient. Which is…
  • You seem dead-set on THIS IS MY PROBLEM, and are only interested in hearing from people that agree with your assessment. Many of us have personal experience with "the intricacies of metabolic science", so don't be so quick to dismiss the ideas and suggestions stated in this thread. Either your problem isn't what you're…
  • Now that's a good idea! Liver is also high in choline, something I may need for my own impaired liver health, but I just haven't been able to stomach the *thought* of some of the recipes I've looked at.
  • You can edit database items. I occasionally run across items that don't have all the values listed, or are listed incorrectly for the same size, etc.
  • What kills me are the people who want to blame both sides 'equally' for this shut down. It IS the law of the land, and only one 'side' has been against it.
  • Oh I'll absolutely be talking to my doctor about it in the next few weeks when I go back, but I'm still interested in hearing what others have experienced with fatty liver disease. The ultrasound was just done Wednesday, and they called me Friday with the results, so they only gave me some preliminary advice over the phone…
  • If you really meant boating, I have no advice, lol. If you meant bloating: Eat a banana. Or a salad with lots of greens and tomatoes. Or even a glass of low-sodium V8 vegetable juice. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this. We all know that sodium increases water retention. So, reducing sodium is one tip. Reducing…
  • Coffee creamer is my one vice--no low-fat or low-sugar for me =) Amaretto flavor, preferably.
  • Just canned vegetable beef soup here...which, I actually love. But it has wayyyy too much sodium *sigh*.
  • It took about a week and half for me to start noticing weight changes after I started counting calories. And for sure you'll notice a difference in only vegetables vs. cheeseburgers. You'd be getting a lot more nutrients with vegetables, and probably feel a heckuva lot better in general. But you'd still need to be eating…
  • That sounds great. I make Dorito casserole with beef and everyone loves it...never thought about making it with chicken, though!
  • Yep yep, this happens to me too, usually after I've been walking 10 or so minutes. I always wondered why.
  • What was the point of changing the look of the site? Did anything actually get updated or improved or added?
  • As some others here have said, you're not eating enough. 1200 is the *minimum* and really that's low, you should strive for more. I do understand, however, that this can be a struggle, as it's one I deal with daily myself. Try upping your minimum to 1400 for 2-3 weeks and see if the scales move again. For myself, I got…
  • I don't generally use the exercise calories burned to eat more calories. Only once or twice I indulged in something extra if I wanted it.
  • I'm not sure where his information came from, but at any rate, most fast foods are not nutritious, which of course can lead to poor health. I do know that a variety of factors can shorten the telomeres that protect your DNA. Personally I rarely eat there--and only then when I'm paid to do so (mystery shopper).
  • I agree, some people seem to come to the forums in order to make themselves feel smarter and more knowledgeable at the expense of others. Try not to let it bother you. There are still lots of people here who do give honest feedback and constructive criticism =)
  • To be honest, no, I haven't, in fact I drink on a near-daily basis. I do include those calories in my diary though, forcing myself to be accountable for it. Since I was put on metformin in February though, my desire to drink is much lower than it was. Although my overall consumption has gone down in recent years, the…
  • Despite the contention in this thread over artificial sweeteners, there is plenty of reliable information about the effects some of them have. If you don't use a lot of sweetener, then I'd say just go with a teaspoon of sugar in your coffee.
