  • I have similar issues. I've lost lots of weight, but have plenty more to lose, and I share your struggles. The answer is probably it's all in your head. Try some of these articles about mindfulness / mindful eating. http://blog.myfitnesspal.com/tag/mindful-eating/ Also, being more aware of proper portion sizes helps. It…
  • Yes. I've lost about 90 lbs since 2011. MFP and cycling. If you want friends to ride with, try looking up a local cycling club. meetup.com, strava, facebook are good sources to find groups that ride in your area and that are a match for your riding style (e.g., casual, racing, mtb, etc.)
  • That article in Bicycling is a great story. It's still available here: http://www.bicycling.com/training-nutrition/nutrition-weight-loss/i-lost-320-pounds-riding-bike Cycling helped me lose 80+lbs and counting.
  • regarding shaving: cyclists shave because cyclists shave. See: http://www.bicycling.com/training-nutrition/training-fitness/why-do-cyclists-shave-their-legs The Reality: "Tradition is why everyone shaves the first time. If you're a bike racer, that's just what you do." —Horner "Leg shaving is an expression of being a…
  • To the OP - it's not really a debate. If you are going to do any amount of riding at all, you need clipless shoes and pedals. The only things that would come before this necessity are helmet (of course) good padded shorts (comfort) and gloves (to protect hands in case of fall). Everyone falls over at a stop a time or two…
  • It's cool when people don't even recognize you, but that wears off once people are accustomed to your new look. Even strangers though, will seem nicer towards you. But the best is being able to do stuff and not get tired. Feel more comfortable in an airplane seat. More comfortable in smaller cars. Clothes fit better, etc.
  • Yeah, i think that's right. I noticed that I got faster even though my power meter on the bike wasn't showing i was putting more in. As the gut gets smaller, you can tuck into a more aero position and go faster. the same is going to be true for running and swimming. in any endurance sport, really, the less drag and dead…
  • When I started at 289 lbs, I couldn't run a mile. I did spin class, xbox 360 games (just moving and keeping my mind off food), weights and watched my calories carefully with mfp. After 5 mos and 50 lbs, I started riding again and the occasional jog. At the end of the year, after about 75 lbs lost, on a wet day where I…
  • try riding a bike. it worked for me.
  • According to Matt Fitzerald, the answer is Yes. http://running.competitor.com/2014/01/nutrition/racing-weight-how-much-should-you-weigh_14665 My own experience with cycling is that I got a lot faster after I lost 80 lbs. My endurance, average speed and power, as well as sprinting ability all increased dramatically.
  • this thread is way to cool for me. Where do the real nerds hang out?

  • good work! I think you look like Anna Gunn (Skyler White in Breaking Bad).
  • Check out strava.com. It's a free cycling app. They have monthly mileage challenges that are great to keep you motivated, as well as social networking with other cyclists and virtual racing if that's your thing. It's almost the best thing for cycling since the invention of the wheel.
  • Ride on the road. You also might get a bell to ring to let people know you are there.
  • I found the OP's story disturbing. I figured a few weirdos, but I was surprised at the sheer "weirdo volume." Anyway, you may dismiss my following comment because "I'm out of the pool," but I'll say it anyway. I met my wife the old-fashioned way. She lived within a block a way at college and went to the same church and…
  • slimfast shakes are nasty. you won't keep it up if you try them. eat real food. plan meals so the vegetables you have are the focus, rather than starting with breads or meats and adding veggies as sides.
  • that scott cutshall story posted above is amazing. major source of inspiration for me when I was 289 lbs. bicycling magazine had him and dozens of other examples of major weight loss through cycling a few years ago. you can probably still find it. When you are heavy, you just can't run enough to really make an impact…
  • Lost 80 lbs in 2011-2012 mostly with spin classes and riding bikes and following MFP very strictly. I started out only with spin 2x/wk + lifting and the occasional run. When about 50 lbs had fallen off, I got back on the road bike and had way more fun! I also started bmx racing. Now I try to ride 9-10 hours per week (road…
  • Yes, but only if you rub some bacon on it. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSReSGe200A
  • I've struggled with the crap people bring to work. It sounds silly, but I had to conquer the temptation. I decided, instead of partaking, I would grab a handful and slam dunk it in the trash can. M&M's, nuts, candy, you name it. You should try it! It feels awesomely liberating! Wasteful? Yes, but it's better than wasting…
  • Way way back, once upon at time, before MFP, I tried Slimfast. It totally sucks. No variety. Tastes bad. Doesn't satisfy hunger. Deprive yourself so much, you go overboard and lose any gains you make. Not for me. Eat real food. Is there an acronym for that already? If not, then I'm claiming it. E.R.F.!
  • Why would you want them to fade? Mine look like I got in a fight with Wolverine. Because I did. And I won. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
  • I lost over 80 lbs focusing overwhelmingly on "cardio" (mostly road cycling and spin class, some running, some bmx racing, occasional swimming) and some weight lifting for almost 2 years now. Years ago, before putting on weight and not exercising at all for years, I primarily lifted weights. One of the biggest life changes…
  • all of the above. plus, what helps me is to set a cut-off time in the evening so I don't binge late night. I set an alarm on my phone that says, It's xxx o'clock you've had enough to eat." it's working for now.
  • Tell? Huge difference. And even as a guy, I can tell you they are not only wrong, but crazy.
  • Isn't England the reason we can carry? ;) to the OP, if it's for home defense, get a shotgun. Short barrel. for concealed carry, it's more complicated. concealment, stopping power, size, holster, method of carry, etc. It will take a while to figure it out.
  • spin class and cycling. 1045 cal in my 1 hour spin class today.
  • frozen vegetables in the gigantic bag $5? boneless skinless chicken breasts 48 oz $10? quinoa is overrated. brown rice $2?
