  • I have done everything from stretching, standing on the stability board we have, lightly jogging around my living room like a nut case, to actually cooking/preparing lunches for the next day. Guess it depends on how strapped I am for time.
  • Your story is the exact same as mine except I'm still working towards the goal. I was 292 (not pregnant) at my highest. I was a big kid, teenager, and through college. I tried to lose weight here and there, but it never completely worked. After having my son was what really kick-started this whole thing. I started about 2…
  • The only reason I can think that your Dr. talked to you about good/bad carbs is if you are diabetic or dangerously pre-diabetic, there are good aka slow carbs or bad aka fast carbs. List of slow-burning carbs- http://www.livestrong.com/article/331564-list-of-slow-burning-carbs/ Includes whole-wheat bread, brown rice Kidney…
  • I just got a bike in the beginning of July and I was reminded of how much I loved it as a kid! It's just a sporty hybrid, great for exercise. I ride about every other day and do strength training on the other days with at least one rest day. I logged about 25-30 miles per week, so for Sept. I'd like to shoot for 120 miles.
  • Started 2 months ago, I just did a week with the bar which was 45 lbs. And then I moved it up in 2-5 lb increments depending on what it was. I tried to move too quickly and in poor form for some of the lifts, so I dropped it back down. But this is what it looks like now- Deadlift 115 Squats 120 Bench Press 70 Rows 65…
  • Since I've steadily been going down in weight, I will buy a few things here and there for the upcoming season that feel tight or don't sit on me right yet. I bought some tops for this fall a couple months ago and I tried them on a few days ago and they are already looking better, not as tight. In fact, I can wear the one…
  • Sometimes I won't log like a celery stalk or even like a quarter of a cucumber since it's so low. I don't log coffee if it's like 5 cal, but I log the milk or cream in it, etc. And like most others here- I don't log 0 cal chewing gum, cooking spray, spices in food, vitamin supplements. I am aware some vitamins like fish…
  • As far as I know from the wisdom across the boards, you cannot spot reduce fat. In order to lose inner thigh fat, you'll have to go into a deficit to lose weight, but you can't pick and choose where it drops off. I gain first in my stomach and lose last in my stomach area. Some women gain in their butt/thighs and are last…
  • So, if I was doing 5x5 strong lift squats and I have to do them every workout, would it be beneficial to vary my stance? So one workout wide stance, the other more narrow or should one focus on one goal at a time? Right now, my stance is more narrow, like hip-width apart, haven't tried the wider stance. I go down not super…
  • People probably judge me when they look at me- probably think they know what I eat and think I don't exercise. When they find out I've lost 114 lbs, then their all like- "omg, how did you do it? What's your secret?" *eye roll* No, it wouldn't bother me to see bigger people, elderly people, disabled people, etc at the gym…
  • Yup, I'm always hungry at those times. I eat 3 main meals, 3 snacks all within my calorie allotment so I can make it through those hunger pangs.
  • I've tried a few times over the years, or more than a few times. I've been big for just about ever- since older childhood. Hit 190 around 13 years of age. 1. My motivation to make the changes this time was different and more powerful. I got gestational diabetes when pregnant with my son and I was so upset. I changed the…
  • They have ways of testing your metabolism. I did such a test when I was 13 at John's Hopkins Hospital (I was being sent for weight management). The Dr. let me know my metabolism was working below average. They had me on a nutrition shake plan and all that, but I was 13- that stuff was gross and I'd worry about it later…
  • They are probably getting quite a bit more protein and fats in the morning instead of straight up fast non-complex carbs. So I imagine this keep them satisfied longer and gives them more energy- so their winning. Ignore others who think doughnuts/bagels/cereal is the only way to go. Starbucks was offering a 2 for 1 butter…
  • I read the post titles and thought about when you shouldn't count calories, hmmm My Birthday! Christmas? Def. Thankgiving Sadly, I still tried to log on all three days- it was probably wildly inaccurate and I gave up basically after booze was involved. I know this wasn't what you were actually talking about, but those are…
  • Also, when individuals lose weight say via diet and exercise, their bodies have become more efficient at this point. For example, if I finally reach a weight of 150 after losing a 100 lbs and the woman next to me who is the same weight and height has been in the vicinity of 150 her entire life, her body hasn't had to learn…
  • I didn't know where to start or how to start. I thought I'd might injure myself. The gym was intimidating. I thought I was still too heavy and should just focus on cardio and losing more weight first. Kinda looked boring. But I kept hearing about the benefits and how heavier people who started strength training wished they…
  • Well, difference between what I really want to eat (although it may not be true anymore, many of my favored foods of the past have lost luster over time due to now being "too sweet" or "too salty") Right now, on the weekends, I love a toasted bagel thin with chive onion cream cheese with an egg and two slices of reduced…
  • I just started doing 5x5 Stronglifts a month ago. I started off with just a 44lb. bar. Deadlift 85 lbs (but I always feel like I could do more, probably why it progresses quicker than some other lifts) Squat 85 lbs Bench 85 lbs Overhead Press 50 lbs Row - 80 lbs I'll be trying 90 today on DL, squats, and bench. Overhead…
  • I'd probably burn about 200 calories in 30 min. When I'm on an hour long bike ride- about 13 or so miles, I burn about 500. I attribute the higher calorie burn during the second half to the fact that now my body is working harder, heart rate is higher, etc.
  • My husband is sensitive to fabric softener and he also has urticaria that presents when he exercises. Antihistamine and compression clothing help him! Your Dr. should be able to confirm.
  • Hopefully, as your body adjusts to the new strain you are putting on it, the less sore you will be. In the meantime, make sure you are warmed up before starting your workout Drink lots of water Stretch at the end of your workout- I found a good 5+ minutes of stretching really eased some of my soreness I got a 5$ small foam…
  • I'm 28, resting 45-50 or so. My Dr. said she could tell I had been exercising by my resting heart rate!
  • I just started Stronglifts 5x5 and I'm making progress almost every week. It's pretty simple, deadlifts, bench presses, overhead presses, rows, and included in both workouts is the squat. It tells me to increase the weight like every time, but I've been taking it slowly and doing the weight for a week or so until I feel…
  • When I used my heart rate monitor and MapMyRun, it was actually pretty close, so I ditched the HRM while jogging just so I'd have less to wear. I still only eat about 50-75% of it back.
  • I like vanilla oikos greek yogurt with a sprinkling of nature's valley peanut butter protein granola (like 10 grams). Sometimes I slice up some strawberries, like 30-40 grams and put it on the bottom. This has become almost as yummy to me as ice cream. Fiber One protein bar (carmel nut or coconut almond) 140 cals, 6-7g…
  • Couldn't believe my husband had never seen Rocky Horror Picture Show. This morning, already thinking about Halloween and planning a showing or something along those lines.
  • On the treadmill, when I'm jogging- I listen to music and focus on breathing, making sure I'm not tensing up parts of my body that don't need to be that tense, and keeping my knees somewhat soft if that makes any sense. I do get super bored on the treadmill/elliptical or anything that makes me feel like some kind of lab…
