  • I read in a leto FB group that taking digestive enzymes can help during the adjustment to higher fat.
  • Thanks, everyone! I don't think I did a good job replacing sodium, especially after Thursday's awesome workout, which is probably what caused me to have those symptoms. Yesterday was pretty rough. I actually felt cold and slept so much I had barely any energy. When I did drink some bouillon, it settled my stomach. Lesson…
  • Thanks! I wasn't aware of nausea being a low carb flu symptom, but thought I'd ask. I did have muscle soreness (not exercise-related) a few days ago and some magnesium at night helped clear that right up.
  • This morning I had chocolate whey protein powder mixed with some powdered peanut butter, liquid coconut oil, and almond milk. It was tasty.
  • I'm interested in other responses, too. I'd check out Peter Attia's blog, Eating Academy. He's a low carb triathlete (there is one great post about being overweight in spite of a rigorous training schedule and that is what prompted him to go low carb. Here is a link: http://eatingacademy.com. Also check out Ben Greenfield…
  • OOH and I'll probably do Xterra trail run nationals in September. I signed up for the 5k spur of the moment this past September after running sweep for the triathlon championships and it was a blast. We'll see though. Lots of time between now and September
  • @lporter229 and @MNLittleFinn I haven't ever been to Zion, moved to northern Utah almost 2 years ago. I've heard great things about the half there. I figure I may as well run that as an excuse to finally visit. I also highly recommend Canyonlands Half in Moab (every March). Great course and Moab is awesome. There are a lot…
  • I'm doing a winter race circuit (5k, 10k, 10 mile, half marathon, 30K) that runs between February - end of April. And Zion Half Marathon April 1 (two weekends in a row that I'll be doing a half marathon, one at Zion, the other for the WRC). Then a full (my first) in May.
  • I have a pair of snowshoes, but they are made more for deep snow and not so much for running. I have a set of YakTrax, which are good on packed, snowy/icy trails and a pair of Kahtoola Nanospikes which are good on snowy, icy roads. I used the latter this morning through slush, ice, and snow.
  • I didn't do great this week with either diet or exercise but it was better than last month. Lost 1.6 of the 2.8 lbs I had gained.
  • This was a super-helpful post. Thank you!
  • Hey, I'm glad to encounter another distance runner here! Have you done a marathon before while on low carb? I'm curious about your experience and any tips you might have.
  • This is awesome! I got lazy with workouts and slid into making poor food choices in November and December. I finally stepped on the scale this morning to assess the damage and I'm only up 2.8 pounds - though it could be more because I think i had lost one or two more pounds after my last weigh-in based on how my clothes…
  • I do strength training twice/week, and am considering adding another day. For the next month or two I will be in pre-training plan mode, so I feel like this is a window to jumpstart some weight loss. I actually lost several pounds last year while training for a half marathon without actually trying. How much protein should…
  • I fell off a bit too, though I've been mostly good even with adding extra carbs on my long running days. I'm up for it!
  • My first full marathon in May (Ogden Marathon in UT) and I just decided to return to Moab on March 12th for the Canyonlands Half, which was my first half 2 years ago (I haven't done one since). After that, not sure. Guess I should look at a race calendar for the summer and fall
  • I agree! I don't mind running in the cold and snow, but heat. UGH!
  • Thanks for the ideas! I typically spend 30-45 minutes prepping dinner, and just don't want to do that every night. I'll be precooking lots of chicken, meat, eggs, and chopping veggies this weekend!
  • Amen! I too run faster in the gym...and then head out my front door to a steep driveway and depending on what direction I go, it's just a steady incline (toward the base of a mountain)
  • I listened to a Fat Burning Man podcast over the weekend in which he interviews Denise Minger (of Death by Food Pyramid fame). One of the topics addressed was "why some women gain weight on Paleo." Granted, LCHF is not necessarily Paleo, but it may still apply. The answer, in a nutshell, was that some people - women in…
  • Bacon! Roasted or grilled chicken eggs Heavy cream in coffee Sharp cheddar cheese Any and all cruciferous/leafy veggies
  • I second what @BalmyD said about weight during that time of the month. Like 5 pounds every time! I don't even bother weighing myself then. Then again, I rarely weigh myself, I go by how my clothes feel - which are currently a little tight after falling off the wagon and indulging in pasta, crackers, and bread over the…
  • ME! Mostly because I am ridiculously inconsistent (run regularly for a month or two, then fall off the wagon and get out of shape). Right now I do about 10:30-11:30 min miles on most runs. This includes occasional walk breaks. I can go faster, just not for long.
  • @Sunny_Bunny_ I couldn't agree more about the magnesium. I take one that's a combination of oxide, citrate, and malate by nature's life. It was recommended by a natural health practitioner a little over a year ago before i even started reducing carbs. I also like Natural Calm. Clears up leg cramps and really helps with…
  • I'm still experimenting with what works. Since I am re-upping my exercise after a month or two of inconsistency and also eating too much (carbs included) and gaining a few pounds over the holidays, I'm resetting. Aiming for around 75-100g/day, which is what Mark Sisson (Mark's Daily Apple) recommends for weight loss. Some…
  • I think I've just been convinced to do my first full marathon this spring. This past summer was really into 5ks, due to lack of time to train. Got a bit lazy during the holidays. Could always use some running pals to motivate and inspire!
  • I've read a lot about overnight oats but haven't tried it. It really works? Sounds good, and convenient
  • I really like protein powders. I don't use them daily, but find I am able to tolerate a protein shake for breakfast (with maybe some fruit, spinach, and almond/coconut milk) better than solid foods most days. Plus, they are really convenient for when you are on the go!
  • Thanks for this question - I am also looking to complete my first full marathon in May 2016!
