Hi, my name is Phil. I run, my wife runs, and my 2 daughters have completed a total of 6 marathons and 1 ultra. I do mostly 5k's but build up to run 1 or 2 half marathons usually where the daughters do their marathon. I have my weekly long run up to 10 miles, but I have 7 lbs. to lose by the race to be at my best running…

Early morning 4 mile run, finally quit raining and played 18 holes of golf. On paper, under calories also. Keep it up!

Yeah dawngerber and RockTex! Keep the motivation going both ways. Thanks. Out for a run.

First annual Belmont Middle School 5k (my wife teaches there). Oldest daughter 1st female, youngest daughter paced my wife and won her age group, wife won her age group, I hobbled in with IT band flare up and won my age group, wife's teacher team won first. Not the most competitive field but a fun day for this running…

Years ago, an orthopedic surgeon( who is also a marathoner) treated me for sciatic nerve pain. He said that running weakens the abdominal muscles which support the lower back causing tightness in the lower back. He gave me core exercises and stretches which after one week eliminated the sciatic nerve problem. One comment…

I was in error. As you say, there is also a half marathon at MB. Daughter is trying to decide if she will be recovered from Kiawah to do another full. If so, I will do the half.

Kiawah Island half marathon Saturday, 2:02:46.

My daughter ran the Myrtle Beach Marathon last year and we drove to about 4 different check points on the course to see her. It is flat. There was a long stretch on Ocean boulevard where the hotels provided shade. A little windy at times when you were close to the ocean. Nice finishing area. Well organized. She did well…

Also, thanks. Three of us had good runs.

Oh yeah. These all sound like good choices.

Even the top runners had problems at this race. Eleven runners that would have finished in the top 15 and one would have been close to 2nd had their times thrown out for not running an accurate course. They weren't laughing.

Thanks Stef, taking the positives. It's been a long time since I have been sore from running, but a good sore and no injuries from that race. Hope it makes me stronger for the next one.

Thanks STrooper, I agree with the light being better in my case, but gaining lean muscle mass sounds positive also. I am light for my height but the mirror test needed improvement. I am one pound away from the weight where I have run good races. I have run the next half marathon in the past with a couple of thousand…

Add another wrinkle to this. I know that my doctor's scale weighs myself and my wife lighter than our home scale. Also, if you are in the market for a new scale, read some reviews and see how many are consistently accurate. Good luck. If I stay consistent on logging calories, then I feel that I can go longer without…

Just got to look at these new comments. Amazing perspectives!

Great points and ideas!

Thanks for the motivation, both ways.

Interesting article and comments.

Okay, after using much of the recommendations above, ran 10 miles with my daughter this morning, of her 16 mile run. Took an extra rest day. Upped my daily calories from 1740 to 2300(mostly healthy carbs) the day before the run. Resting pulse rate before the run was lower than before I started MFP. Cool morning. No…

When I had plantar fasciitis, it was painful in the morning when I first got out of bed, hurt walking and felt better as the day went on. Could not run for months. Mine came from marathon training on an uneven road. Plus, I have high arches. It was my worst running injury and took about a year to get over. This was years…

You are correct ATT949 on some muscle loss, based on my weight lifting sessions. The amount of weight that I can move with my legs is not far off from what I could do in my younger days. The upper body strength is significantly weaker but have seen some gradual improvement in max lifts there. Do not want to lose that…

Please do not take the following example as something to do because I have read where smoking places the same stress on your heart and lungs as an additional 75 pounds of weight. This is an extreme rarity. I once finished a 10 mile race with an executive friend. Fifteen minutes later, he was smoking and getting strange…

Alone. More convenient to go out the front door on my schedule for an early morning run. And twice a week do strength training at the local Y alone. More time efficient. Don't have to wait on anyone.

I have similar lbs to go to reach my goal weight. Other discussions have indicated that my loss goal of 2 lbs. per week is too fast. If I reduce that to a lower weekly amount such as yours, there is a better chance that my training paces may not suffer. Thanks.

That makes since, since the legs were not there but my heart rate during the not so good run was very comfortable. This could be that I did have a loss in glycogen. I am 6'4" and started at 180, trying to get to my optimal race weight. The mirror test shows that I have excess body fat around the middle. Many of the posts…

I really like the details of logging food and exercise, and comparing to results. Will use that strategy on all of these replies. Thanks again.

Just got in to see these great responses. My eating plan calculates a 2 pound per week weight loss, but as pointed out above in the first 10 days, I lost 5 pounds(too fast). This is where I got a little concerned because after this I had my first bad run since I started this program. I think this is primarily because on my…

I had this problem in my younger days from eating a decent size meal too close to running. I like at least 4 hours after a meal before running. My daughters have run 6 marathons and 1 ultra and do the same with no problem. Liquids don't seem to affect our running and we can sip right up to the run.

Sound recommendations. Thanks.

Okay getting confidence in this program. Lost 3.6 painless at my weekly weigh in!
