  • I have a weird problem with elliptical machines. I don't know if it's the distance that the pads are from each other or what.... but it makes my arches ache like crazy. Five minutes and I am DONE!! That being said, all machines are not right for all people. You just may be better off with a dreadmill, like me. LOL!! Good…
  • I don't know about your gym, but every gym I've ever been a member of (and there are a lot of different ones over the years), has been too hot. I don't think they set the heat or AC for the people that are exercising, I think they set it for the employees.
  • I am injured right now and working with a PT and Chiropractor. I haven't run in 2 months, except one 3 mile trial run a couple weeks ago, which went well, but was painful. I have kept up my walking as it is forward progress. I would rather be running and training, but I am re-building and doing what I can. Be happy that…
  • I am a recovering alcoholic; I drink, I die. Food is killing many, but it's not looked at the same way. It is, indeed, a bit different than drinking; I don't drink at all, but we all must eat. It is, indeed, similar to drinking as you have to hit your bottom. The pain must outweigh the pleasure and hard choices must be…
  • I will be 60 in February and am Keto. I wasn't Keto at 30, so not sure about that situation. I am an ultra runner and know a LOT of athletes that have great performances due to a Ketogenic diet. I started this journey for that reason, but I have lost some weight and inches. Gotta die sometime........
  • I eat Keto so I can't have carbs and sugar. I usually have a handful of different nuts and/or seeds. Elevation bars from Aldi's. String Cheese. Beef Jerky.
  • I sprained the inside (not the normal outside) of my ankle a few years ago. My doctor said that an inside sprain takes longer to heal. This happened 3 weeks before my first 100 mile attempt. Since so much $$ was involved, I still went (was a rail trail, so flat). I tried to run but my ankle couldn't take the impact, so I…
  • I feel your pain. I didn't have good insurance for a number of years so I let my body go. I hadn't been to the chiropractor in 4 years and I paid the price. I am an ultra runner and last year was a debacle. I was DNFing races and when I did finish them, they were painful and ugly. I attempted a 100 miler in September and…
  • Honestly, not every exercise will work for everyone. I can't use the elliptical as it makes my arches ache! I think it's the distance apart that the foot pads are.
  • When you are starting a new exercise routine, you can really get super sore. Honestly, if it were me, I would opt for the walk and do the class once a week until I could do it with less soreness. It's not going to do you any good to try to push through the pain because it could impact your form, and in the end, possibly…
  • OH YES!!! I'm an ultra runner and I've had this issue more than once. It's not always ill fitting shoes; it can be caused by a number of issues. I had two issues. First: I needed a bigger toe box than most running shoes provide. I now use Altra Running Shoes (trail and road). Second: I have hammer toes, so my toes pound…
  • I agree with everything everyone else is saying. You started out too aggressively, it sounds like. And having sore muscles for the entire 6 weeks is definitely NOT normal!!! We have a saying in the running community..... You can't outrun a bad diet! As pinuplove said, weight is primarily lost in the kitchen, not in the gym.
  • It's totally doable. Intervals can be your best friend. Your father probably knows them intimately. Most of us ultra runners do!! LOL!! I'm sure your father can help, but there are lots of resources out there. Have fun and good luck!! :)
  • Pardon me for saying this, but 15 miles a day at your weight, plus the weight of a full pack, is an ambitious goal. Especially the longer the hike goes. One thing you should do for sure is train with a heavy pack. Like 30 pounds. You can do this on a dreadmill in the beginning, but eventually you are going to want to hit…
  • Definitely do the C25K program!! When I started running, 16 years ago, there weren't plans like that. I would run 2 minutes and walk 2 minutes until I could run longer than I could walk. LOL!! It's a good, solid plan that a LOT of people have success with!! :)
  • Welcome!! It's never too late. One day at a time!! :)
  • I can't believe what I am reading!! I am an ultra runner and most of us are doing some sort of weird diet or another at any given time so I'm not used to hearing that sort of thing but if I were you, I'd say I'm an athlete and watching what I eat. Usually if you throw the "athlete" thing out there, people kind of don't…
  • For that distance, you don't need anything special as far as food. Just keep it what you normally eat so there are no surprises in your digestion. Use restroom before the race if you can because the running motion will cause things to "move". Do a walk/run interval. I am an ultra runner and we all do that!! Try 3:2 or 4:1…
  • Well, not sure how much you are "really" moving, but 10,000 steps are about 5 miles. That is the recommended amount of walking you should be doing if you are able bodied.
  • Thank you for posting this. You are right..... don't quit before the miracle happens!! Thank you for your service, sir!
  • Are you sure it's a knee injury?? A couple of years ago I was running and suddenly my knees were absolutely killing me. It got to the point that I could barely walk. Turned out to be IT Bands!! They were so tight that they caused knee pain. That's a much easier fix than most!!
  • I'll be 60 in February and I haven't noticed any of those things, but I've always been a "jump out of bed, ready for the day" type of person. I get around 6 hours of sleep a night and am still high-energy. I usually get up at about 4:15ish but by 9 or 10pm, I'm ready for bed. LOL!! Menopause has caused a plethora of other…
  • That's a tough one because I imagine nearly anything would cause pain, including cycling and swimming. Just treat yourself well. Maybe walks??
  • I agree with the last poster. I was eating too many nuts and seeds and stalled. When I cut most of them out, I started losing again! They can be sneaky little suckers!! ;)
  • I found this to be a problem as well. Only connect one device or app and add anything extra by hand.
  • BTW..... don't feel weird about being in the back of the pack, either. Truth be told, there are a LOT of walkers in races these days and you will really have to work HARD at being last. When I started running, 16 years ago, there were no walkers and I was dead last (and I mean dead last by a LOT) at every race. Back then,…
  • It really depends on what type of diet you are following. I am Keto so I prep Keto Almond Bread, different meats, cook bacon, make fat bombs, pre-make salads, that sort of thing.
  • Be careful about your "Nutrition" bar choices. Some are nothing but glorified candy bars. Check ingredients and the nutrition label. :)
  • There is a saying in the running community..... "you can't outrun a bad diet". That being said, some people can. I can't. LOL!!
