I coach runners and triathletes. I tell them to try and eat 60% of carbs during training week, 65-70% during race week, and don't bother with a carb load the night before. Fat is usually set around 20-25 and protein 15-20% The recommendations I give my athletes are based on performance needs and extensive research.

Jesi, I'm so glad that you've found you enjoy running! It is rather addicting, lol. The biggest problem that people run into is that they try to do too much, too fast. Three a week is recommended to allow your body to strengthen bones, muscles and connective tissues that assist the body in the motion of running. Too much,…

For me, counting the calories was key. Turned out it was the mayo, dressing, too large portions, etc. Once I figured out 'how' to eat and taught my stomach what a proper portion was, things got easier. Now, I run and cycle mostly. So I guess the best answer would be 'good fitness habits'.

Not true about burning the same. I use a gps/heart rate monitor. I burn fewer calories per mile on my slower runs than I do on my faster runs. For example: My faster training runs (8 minutes per mile) burn about 104-105 calories per mile. My slower runs (12 minutes per mile) burn about 90 calories per mile. Not a huge…

Forgot to mention that i'm a marathoner. This is tried and true for me.

A camelbak chafes too much for me. I use a hydration belt by "nathan." look on amazon. Five ounces every two miles, then if i'm going more than ten miles, i make sure i run by somewhere i can refill. You'll need to try it out. I only use the belt if i go more than an hour, and if i'm running that long, i also bring gu. One…

When I was training for my first marathon, I read somewhere there is a quantifiable number of seconds on how each pound of body weight will affect your times. I then read recently that weight lifting more than about two-three times a week is counterproductive for endurance performance. With that in mind, RUN and BIKE. One…

I think anyone in the emergency field, whether it be medicine, fire, military, etc should be here. It's definitely hard living on candy bars and diet cokes between the madness that invades. So... How is work going for everyone? What is your favorite snack to turn to when you don't have time to cook?

Iha-I did that marathon last year. It's a GREAT course! The back half of the course is mostly downhill, and it's a beautiful finish. IMO, you're in the best city in the world for motivation! I'm looking to do that race too. Good luck!

I want to point out one other aspect of the article. The mention of fat vs carbs and protein in a female athlete's diet. There was a recent study that looked at elite endurance athletes and the necessity of fat in their diets, now to hear this is even more important in female athletes... It would seem fat is more important…

Because something has to hold the river and stream beds down. Why must you crawl before you can walk?

It has less to do with whether or not she wants kids, but the REASON she doesn't want kids. And I wasn't the only one offended. Mental or not, she's a role model for many women out there. And that was a pretty negative thing to put out there. Especially when there are so many other things that "ruin" your body (my best…

I'm sorry for the threadjack. I'm feeling a little snarky today, and Jillian Michaels rubbed me the wrong way. She definitely is to be admired for her looks-and for the background.

Okay... This gets an award!

Bare! Two plus two is...

I'm not really a Jillian Michaels fan. Doesn't want to have kids because it will ruin her figure? That's pretty shallow. AND offensive to me (mother of 2). Kids didn't ruin my body. My bad habits did. And I'm almost in the best shape of my life-I'm a healthy BMI and I can run a marathon. A number on a scale isn't that…

I'll do a search later and post some of the previous threads on the subject. Check out my diary. You'll see how I do it, this might help. Remember though, that I'm maintaining, AND I'm producing enough milk for two babies. If I were you, I would take yourself out of a deficit on MFP-eat your "maintenance" calories. Then,…

Ice-I used to do this after I had surgery for endometriosis. We were trying to preserve what fertility I had left (had surg at 21), so reducing the number of times I menstruated was the goal. Ultimately, it was successful. I'd go 12 weeks on, 1 week without. Four-five periods a year. LOVED it. And now, two children later,…

I've been using one for months. In my opinion, waste the extra cash to get a digital scale.

bump But I agree with the calories in vs calories out. Keep in mind that high intensity workouts force your body to build muscle. It's not a rapid process, but once you're at a healthy weight, you may have a battle losing those pounds. Switch to measuring yourself rather than weighing. It will tell the tale better.
