rest day strategy?
I started a new work out program with the goal to add muscular strength and tone. It’s a one-hour intense workout I’m doing every other day (3-4 times a week). I also ride my bike 4 days a week for 90 minutes a day (I commute to work so it’s actually 45 minutes 9 hours apart). I also occasionally do 40-70 mile rides (3-6…

ladies: where do you buy your workout clothes?
I'm looking for some technical, flattering, mid-priced clothes for aerobics, weights, yoga, cycling etc. I'd like to spend around $30 per piece. I find clothes at Athleta, Title 9, REI and they cost around $100 which is so expensive I'm afraid to sweat in them. Or I find clothes for $20 at mall stores and they wear out…

boot bamp class vs. non-contact boxing class
Pros? Cons? I am considering joining one of these classes as a change of pace from the gym. I want to tone and strengthen my whole body in a supportive group environment.

Thoughts on the "Garmin connect calorie adjustment"
I'm curious about the science behind this adjustment. What do you all think of it? I walked 17,000 steps yesterday at work. My feet are exhausted, but I wasn't "on a walk", I was just pacing back and forth waiting for people. I don't feel like that low heart rate activity burned 1500 calories, as mfp has calculated.

Healthy, fast, and full of flavor...sharing my spicy lime thai peanut sweet potato noodle dish
I'm working a late shift at work today, and struggled getting motivated because I was tired and hungry. I wanted to eat acres of noodles, but knew that would be a bad idea. So, I modified a low-fat peanut sauce recipe and mixed it with steamed spiralized sweet potato noodles. Steaming the sweet potatoes meant no oil was…

Trying out the TDEE method, hope I'm doing it right...
I want to lose 1 pound a week. Mfp set me at 1300 calories a day, which seemed too low and was really hard to do. I used to maintain at 2400 a day, but after switching to a sedentary job (and subsequent weight gain) I’m guessing I maintain at 2000 since eating less than 1900 on any given day is **hard**. I went online and…

My Garmin let me down
I got a new Vivoactive HR about a month ago. I was excited to have a fitness tracking watch after my Pebble died. The fitness tracking and heart rate monitoring has been great! But I am so frustrated with the bluetooth pairing of the watch I am ready to return it. I got a constant error message for the first 3 weeks that…

cyclists: What's your bike of choice when travelling?
Does anyone use a folding bike? I've been enamored with the Richey Breakaway as a full-size folding option, but recently a friend was trying to talk me into the typical small folding bike. Does anyone use one? Do you ride long distances with it? I used to box my bike up, but stopped when luggage prices jumped for air…

Am I not walking enough?
I've had a fitness tracker for a month now, and it tells me I'm not walking enough. It's sending me news articles about how important walking is and whatnot. I walk about 6,000 steps a day and climb 13 flights of stairs. I've never focused on walking. I average 750 "activity minutes" a week (cycling, gym, etc.) which I…

Bicycle Commuters: I need to vent about my locker room!
I feel the need to do some 1st-world style venting here. My workplace has small locker room with a shower in it for cyclists, a requirement LEED-certified buildings. Being able to bike to work was a requirement when I was looking for a job, so I feel pretty lucky that I found a workplace that has a place to change. A lot…

adrenal rhythms: legit science or hokum?
I recently took a saliva cortisol test to measure how my cortisol levels change throughout the day. Obviously it was just a sample from one random day, but I did wait 2 months before taking the samples so I could sample the most "normal" day possible. I don't know much about what a normal fluctuation should be. According…

What's your morning routine?

free-weight exercises that incorporate balance and multiple muscle groups
Loosing interest in my current strength-training routine and am looking for things that demand more attention. I used to do a routine that worked arms and back and legs in a long, fluid motion while holding weights, but it was so long ago I forgot what it was. Anybody have suggestions? single-leg rdl -someone suggested…

Nasty, nasty aminoboost powder
I bought this insanely expensive amino boost dietary supplement to help build muscle, and cannot stand the taste. It has that saccharin, over-sweet stinging chemical taste. I think my taste buds are especially sensitive to that taste because I can't stomach diet drinks or anything with artificial sweeteners (often put in…

probiotic hot sauce?
A Korean buffet by my work serves “probiotic hot sauce”. What does this even mean? It doesn’t appear to be made with yogurt (not opaque). Is Korean hot sauce fermented? Are there even any probiotic benefits at a serving size that small (I admit I down about an 1/8th of a cup of this stuff because it’s delicious)?

cyclists: have you ridden the U.S. coast-to-coast?
I am considering taking a supported cross-country tour and am hoping to hear from folks who have done it. Tell me your story! -What replacement/wear items did you need for the bike? I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around that since I’d effectively be riding my typical annual mileage in 60 days. I plan to overhaul…

Too much cardio?
Yesterday my trainer suggested that perhaps I am getting too much cardio, which I immediately thought was bogus. There are tons of people who do way more cardio than me. But then a friend of mine said her club said the same thing to a friend of hers. Is this really possible? I easily have at least one full rest day a week,…

Variations on traditional thanksgiving dinner
Since I am home alone for Thanksgiving, I can make whatever I want! I'm having turkey ham tangine with quinoa and turmeric roasted Brussels sprouts and cauliflower with chick peas. Pretty darn proud of myself. Who else is changing it up from traditional turkey with the fixings? What are you having instead?

Good weight lifting goals for women?
I'm thinking of making some goals for weight lifting, you know, so I can meet a goal and feel proud of myself. Not sure how much weight is reasonable to expect to be able to do. 3 months is a nice time frame. But how much can a 40-year-old woman reasonably increase in 3 months? 5 lbs? 50 lbs.? 500lbs.? I work out 2-3 times…

REALLY don't want to loose the lean muscle mass!
A year ago I joined a health club and set a goal to gain 5 lbs. or lean muscle mass. I did it! My trainer thought it would only take me a few months, so I was discouraged for a very long time, especially because I lost muscle mass the first few months. But I finally did it, and I am proud! :) However, I also gained fat…

fasting?
There are a lot of arguments both for and against fasting. I am curious what the mfp community thinks about it. I am considering a fast today...it's been 18 hours and I'm starting to get hungry, so I'm going to need some compelling support to get through.

Heart Rate Training: Zone 4/Threshold training?
I recently bought a heart rate monitor, and after tracking several work outs I am surprised to find that I naturally spend more time in the anaerobic/threshold zone than the other zones. On average, about 30% of a typical workout is spent in the 4th zone, with the runner up being zone 2 (fat burning) at 25%. The percentage…

Advantages of the cable machine?
I get the advantage of free weights (more control, bang for your buck) and weight machines (more precision, easier to be in healthy alignment) but what about a cable work out? Who uses the machine? Why choose that over other lifting styles? I tried a few arm lifts on one the other day and am wondering what would be…
