Garmin announces Epix 2 and Fenix 7
It costs as much as the first used car I bought, but I guess the car didn't have GPS. Garmin has updated their Fenix line, and put the Venu 2 screen into one of them calling it Epix. https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2022/01/garmin-epix-in-depth-review.html…

Angry sad face
https://arcteryx.com/us/en/shop/mens/proton-fl-hoody That is where the zipper is supposed to be. I realized it was missing after I drove 75 minutes one way to the ski area. I hand washed the jacket last night, but put it through the dryer because it's good for the DWR. This is my third winter with it. That jacket is…

Thanks Garmin!
Sometimes when you're doing something rhythmic that takes concentration, you get into a state of "flow" and time stands still for you. But not for the rest of reality. We've had historic snowfall over the last week or so. Both of our passes through the Cascades have been closed for several days, with people stranded up…

A winter celebration (ski pics)
Hi everyone 🙂 I go to the Methow Valley - a small opening in the North Cascades - every year to celebrate another trip around the sun and the coming of winter. 🌨️🌨️🌨️ ❄️ I got back home a few days ago and thought I should share a few pics. This is busy downtown Winthrop, we ate at Jack's a few times because didn't have…

Down jackets and back shoulder straps
I've always thought it wasn't a great idea to hike in a down jacket you like, partly because they're too warm for much activity and don't work if you sweat a lot in them, also because the backpack straps will eventually wear through the thin fabric and set the down loose into the four winds. There's also the danger of…

How do you feel about fleece?
Fleece works pretty well. It's warm, it's breathable, dries quickly, and even stays reasonably warm if you get it wet. On the other hand, micro-plastic pollution is showing up all over the planet, including in the food we eat and water we drink. And we've learned that fleece is a major contributor. Every time you wash it,…

Knife's edge between seasons - hiking pics
It's been a while since I've posted photos, these won't be quite up to my usual standards. My computer died, I haven't made a priority of dealing with it. But I saw a lot of beauty yesterday and want to share a little. Only so much, though. This was a sekret "trail" and I'm not going to say more than that it was in the…

New Goretex coming
https://www.t3.com/amp/news/new-gore-tex-is-the-companys-thinnest-lightest-ever-and-these-brands-are-signed-up-already Not a lot of detail, the highlights are that it will be half as thick as the current stuff, and more environmentally sustainable. Available in fall 2022, a year from now. If I was casually wanting a hard…

FYI: Blood pressure watches
https://www.theverge.com/platform/amp/2021/9/16/22677381/smartwatch-blood-pressure-samsung-fitbit-apple I saw an article today about how Samsung, Apple, and Fitbit are working to put blood pressure measurements into their watches, but the tech isn't there yet. I was looking on Amazon for a cheap smart watch and many claim…

Outdoor solo swiming - what to do with your stuff?
I'm wondering what other folks do about this. You can't take all your stuff in the water. What do you do with it while you swim? I like a beach at a nearby park. I walk to the water in my swim trunks. I need to bring my car key to get home, and overall I think it's irresponsible not to bring my phone. When I get to the…

I ❤️ my Garmin bike radar!
I forgot to charge it and, as was bound to happen, the battery eventually died. I noticed I spent the rest of my ride feeling slightly less safe, looking behind me more often, and having to think more about traffic. I love having my watch just vibrate noticably wherever there's a car approaching from behind, and it being…

Congratulations Jason Hardrath!!
Jason Hardrath just completed the Bulger List in 51 days!! The Bulger List is the top 100 highest peaks in Washington, more or less. This is the fastest known time, and this record will stand for a long time.

Garmin Progress Summary Report
I don't know how many folks in here have looked at this, you can only get to it through the website, it isn't in the app. Full of very cool and sometimes useful info, broken down in all kinds of ways. I was looking up how much I've swam this year compared to last, and noticed while I was asking it that I burn more calories…

I failed my main summer goals.
I have a lot of goals, I actually write them down on a sheet of paper in the spring because it feels satisfying to check them off with a pen in hand and to contemplate how long I've been wanting to do something. Highly recommend trying it. 🙂 At the top of my list was to visit the summits of Abernathy and Azurite Peaks, in…

Timothy Olson Sets the Men’s Supported Pacific Crest Trail FKT 👍👍👍
On Thursday, July 22, 2021, ultrarunner Timothy Olson set a new men’s supported fastest known time (FKT) on the 2,653-mile Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in the western United States. His time of 51 days, 16 hours, and 55 minutes (to be confirmed) bests the previous record set by Karel Sabbe of 52 days, 8 hours, and 25 minutes…

Possible to correct Garmin history?
My watch had a blip today and thinks I did a lot of very intense exercise. I finished a walk, saw 4 days recovery time, and it looks like my training load is up by 2x to 3x. I generally don't the training load feature pretty useful. This phantom exercise it thinks I got today threw everything off, and now the guidance on…

Vacation
I see a lot of threads about this, finally get to post one! 🙂 🌲 I'm going to a resort in the national park, I get a floating (on the lake) cabin for 5 days. It's off the grid, there's no phone reception, no internet, no TV, the rooms don't have screens. All there is to do for entertainment is talk to people. 🙂 When they…

Thoughts any stair repeats vs one continuous slog?
My most important outdoor goals this summer are a handful of summits (Desolation, Azurite, Abernathy, The Brothers) that will have me doing up to 6,500 feet of elevation gain in a day. I've been having fun getting ready by doing progressively bigger peaks. I'm curious to hear people's thoughts and experiences with…

Do you use a wind shirt?
There's one on sale in my size and a color I like. 🤑 I'm trying to think of times when a soft shell was too much but I still wanted some wind blocking, not coming up with many examples. Am I thinking about it wrong and the point is space in your pack? If you have one does it get much use? And are they as breathable as a…

We should make vaccines before viruses emerge
A lot like the flu shot, they make educated predictions about what strains will circulate before it happens. And we don't spend 15 years testing it, we know the framework for making flu shots is safe. Sounds crazy, right? Because of SARS and MERS, public health people knew it was a matter of time until another coronavirus…

Cyclists: how often do you shift?
79 minute ride today. 🙂 My Garmin counted 16 front shifts and 678 rear shifts. That sounds like a lot. Probably counts multiple cogs at a time as multiple shifts, but it still sounds like a lot. I looked at some older data and it's all pretty similar. Now I'm curious. How often does everyone else do it?

Vittoria's new foam insert for road bikes
My immediate reaction when I saw this was "gimmick." Actually it sounds pretty clever, if it works I'll use them. https://cyclingtips.com/2021/04/vittoria-announces-run-flat-foam-tire-inserts-for-road-bikes/ These go between the rim and tire, on road tubeless systems. The air pressure within the tire compresses the foam,…

I need to sing some praise
I've been on the wheels that came with my bike for a couple weeks because it took that long for a tire to arrive. I've been exploring, and found an entire mile of flat ground. We don't have much of that. It's a fun place to sprint and I made a segment. Today I did an after work ride on my preferred wheels. I was already…

New Garmin pedals in SPD and SPD-SL 😁😁😁
I'm keenly interested in these. SPD is much better than Keo for riding in gravel (ours is mostly hard pack, and gets muddy). I have a for injury that's mostly healed, cycling can irritate it slightly, I think having a wider Q factor would be good for me. These are very expensive, but most technology things come down in…
