Swallow your fear
I notice a very common recurring theme in these parts is fear. "I'm scared to eat my calories". "I'm scared to go in the free weights section". "I'm scared people will make fun of me when I run". etc, etc. A little bit of fear is normal. It's human. I was scared sh!tless on my first day of kindergarten. Then again, first…

a good day
It's just about 10pm and having chili for dinner. But I still have about 400 remaining to hit a healthy deficit. This means I get to make a nice shake right before bed. I love it when things work out this way.

Please stop the coffee bashing
Really. Please, stop it. It hurts my feelings. Why do you people have to keep implicating coffee in your cream and sugar problems? If you want to quit drinking extra sweet frothy milk, please go ahead. But sweety frothy milk is to coffee what giraffes are to bananas.

Why doesn't strength training show calories burned?
Log your Strength Training workout under the Cardiovascular section in order to log the calories. You can still log it in the Strength Training section as well, if you want to keep track of weight, reps, and sets.

Anybody want to take over?
Does anybody want to take over this group? I give up, after this: The admins explicitly welcome all the repetition. There was a time when I thought creation of this FAQ would be a catalyst for them to make an official one, or post a link to this one somewhere prominent. That is never going to happen. I thought about…

so, i'm off the juice...
I was taking 113g/day in the morning before breakfast. But my supply ran out. Not sure whether to get more, or maybe a different kind. It was Knudsen's Just Black Cherry. I might try something more traditional next time; perhaps Florida's Natural Orange Juice.

what's the dope pre-workout supplements?
Last night a friend of mine asked me about pre-workout supplements (e.g., Jack3D, Cellucor C4 Extreme), and it occurred to me that I know nothing about this whole class of product. Do any of these "work"? And if so, what does "work" mean?

NSV: Beanpole!
I was just called a Bean Pole, by an incredibly strong buff guy, collegiately educated, with a high IQ. (He didn't say so, but I'll bet he's got an enormous weiner as well). I had to look it up, and beanpole means a tall skinny person! As a short chubby guy, it just made my day being called tall and skinny!

Anyone fit for the first time in their life?
I know a lot of folks here are "fit again". They were active in high school or maybe college, then for whatever reason got out of shape and overweight; and now are back on track again. Then there are others like me, who were never active until recent years. I can still remember the anxiety I would feel when they would make…

Losing weight too easy? Try these handicaps
If you're having way too easy of a time losing weight and would like it to be a bigger challenge, try some of these tips! 1. Cut out entire food groups arbitrarily. One week you can cut out carbs. Another week, stop eating fats. On week 3, don't eat any yellow foods, etc. Be creative with this. 2. Don't eat 3 hours before…

The power of rationalization
On days that I eat at a surplus, but did not intend to, I think, "that's ok, I'll build a teeny bit of extra muscle". On days that I eat at a deficit, but did not intend to, I think, "that's ok, I'll burn a teeny bit of extra fat". It's a win-win situation. :drinker:

Long term effects of eating sensibly
so i have two questions: 1, has anyone here done and been successful with eating a balanced diet at a moderate calorie deficit or surplus? Heart Rate Graphs (just for fun)
I synced up my Garmin HRM today for the first time in a while and I took a peek at some of the heart rate graphs. It is kind of interesting to see the different characteristics for different kinds of exercise. Here is a session of heavy weight lifting (with a buddy, so there was a fair bit of waiting around as well) And…
