Anyone from Lansing MI???
Just wanted to see if anyone is from Lansing or East Lansing Michigan. I'm moving out there in a few weeks and would love any helpful tips on a good gym, walking trails, places in general to get exercise outdoors. Also, how you cope with the winter weather for getting exercise (i'm from California). Thanks

complaint about grocery stores
So i just moved to the mid-west from California and am having a very difficult time adjusting to what is available in the grocery stores here. I met my weight loss goal in CA and i found just the right foods for me that were low in calorie, healthy and tasty and became very loyal to those brands. Not to mention the…

Crosscountry skiing
Winter is here and so is the snow! Anyone doing any cross country skiing? I've gone a couple times this month and love it! Haven't lived in the snow for 15 yrs but just moved to Michigan and found this is a wonderful way to embrace the winter chill, get outdoors and use muscles that I don't often use. Great workout for the…

Finished my first Century Bike Ride!!
I am so so very proud myself - With some training on the weekends I was able to complete my first 100 mile bike ride in beautiful northern California! It was a killer with tons of climbing and i'll probably be recovering until the end of July but it was definitely worth it. I think my weight loss and strength training,…

Reached my Goal!! but will continue on...
I am happy to share that I reached my end goal this week, nearly 2 months early! I feel great and am happy with my body but am considering to continue the same daily goals i've been using. I'm 5"2 and weighed in this morning at 125. When i was thin, this was basically what I weighed- along time ago, but i sorta remember…

kick the habit! Say "no" to diet coke challenge
So I just finished reading all the responses to Amy's post in Weight Loss and Dieting about drinking diet coke (below) and it sounds like there may be enough folks interested in starting a thread for breaking the diet soda addiction. I'm inspired from all the responses to give this a serious shot! I drink several 12 oz.…

musing on why we need exercise
I was reminded today how important exercise is in losing weight. It forces us to think about our bodies in a deeper way, connect with it and LISTEN to it more than when we are just cutting calories. When we exercise our good and bad food choices can become even more evident when our body needs healthy fuel for energy or…

calories burned based on heart rate
For those of you needing to know how much certain activities (DVD's etc) burn in calories or just want a comparison to mfp calculations i found this link on line. It calculates calories burned based on average heart rate. If you don't have a monitor you can take your pulse 4-5 times throughout the course of an activity and…

VO2 max??? Any fitness trainers out there
From what i gather this is an indicator of fitness and endurance and has something to do with the maximum capacity my body can use oxygen (though this doesn't mean much to me). My question has to do with my HRM and this setting. With the Polar f6 there is a default VO2 max setting which i think is calculate based on…

high salt in diet
I'm not too privy on a number of nutritional issues but know that too much salt can be a bad thing. Is this true only if you have high blood pressure. I've always eaten a lot of salt and now that I've started this diet and taken out all the yummy flavorings such as sesame oil, butter and such I really relish the taste of…

using target heart rate zones
I got a heart rate monitor about a month ago to more acuratley access my workouts in terms of exertion and calories burned. My max target heart rate is 188 and at 80-90% it's 150-169 bpm. I've read that the 80-90% zone can only be sustained for very short periods of time-like 30-60 sec. However, I find that I can often be…

Hello Everyone! After reading many of the posts, this site seems very supportive and helpful with guiding the way towards reaching our weight-loss goals. I'm a new member as of 5 days ago and new to dieting. I've had a couple knee surgeries in the last 4 years and have spent the last two years being very serious about…
