Fruit consumption per day ?
I'm wondering what the typical fruit consumption is in the US or other countries. In the UK the mean amongst those who consume fruit is ~120 grams a day, median 87 grams, 95%-ile 330 grams. 28.375 grams in an ounce (30 for mental arithmetic). Any data in weight units ? (I did find something in "adjusted cups" but that made…

Cardio (un)Fitness
I had my cardio fitness measured on a treadmill, and it was as bad as I expected (never really done sport or exercise for their own sake). My fitness VO2max was just under 28 ml/kg/min in other words for each kg of body weight I can use up to 28 ml/min of oxygen when flat out. So multiply by 80 kg gives 2.24 litres/min of…

Eat protein with each meal for best results
http://jn.nutrition.org/content/early/2014/01/28/jn.113.185280.abstract Found that an even distribution of protein intake over three meals was better for muscle growth etc than a protein light breakfast with a lot of protein in the evening, Mmm, bacon. Sorry Kellogg's and General Mills.

High protein intake not fattening. CICO ?
Thirty healthy resistance-trained individuals were split into a control group (CON) and high protein intake (HP). The latter were told to increase protein intake while keeping fats & carbs the same. http://www.jissn.com/content/11/1/19/abstract (full paper available free PDF www.jissn.com/content/pdf/1550-2783-11-19.pdf )…

EU to approve health claim for fructose
From the new year it will be permitted to make a health claim on products containing fructose - Dr Lustig will be overjoyed :-) I foresee sugar manufacturers putting in plant to make 85% fructose syrup from sugar. http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=OJ:L:2013:160:0004:0008:EN:PDF

Psychology of "eating back calories"
I understand the math(s) and that MFP set a deficit without exercise and expect you to log exercise and eat the equivalent number of calories. I'm intrigued - Does this work for you in terms of motivation? Do you feel like a rodent in an exercise wheel trying to earn food ? Do you punish yourself for overeating by racking…

Proper ice cream in the UK (low carb)
Knowing that ice cream can be made from eggs and cream, without addition of sugar or glucose syrup, I wonder if anyone sells such a thing commercially in the UK ? If I make it then it gets eaten within a day, so buying it has an appeal but I haven't found anything as yet.

Biggest Loser (Aus) calorie deficits
Watching reruns of old series on UK daytime TV over lunch I spotted with the help of the pause feature that they had a large -ve net calorie intake for the day - a contestant was being pulled up for eating ~600 calories rather than his goal of 1800 but the high exercise calories put him a few k into the negative balance.…

A study of healthy lean young men fed the same food in either 3 meals or 14 "meals" per day found that their Resting Metabolic Rate reduced by ~120 calories a day and ~15% less protein was oxidised (used as fuel) on the higher frequency eating pattern. Discussed at…

MFP Predicted loss rates are optimistic
MFP is based upon 500 calories a day equating to 1 pound per week of loss (3500 calories per lb - assumes some of the weight lost is not fat). More complex models have been published and validated against experimental data, and at least two are online as interactive calculators. I had a go at simulating the weight loss of…
