New here, please add me to this group
HI, I was told about this group by my MFP friend rioux. I was a stanch believer that in order to lose weight, I had to limit food. I never would have believed that eatting more would be better for me but it is. Would love to join this group. How do I go about that? When I click "join this group" it won't let me. Please…

Need Help...
Hi everyone, I am reaching out to my MFP family to see if anyone can help me. I bought a new Norditrack treadmill earlier this year and it's iFit compatible. iFit is a wireless adapter that allows you to insert it into the treadmill and map a route and the treadmill will do the elevations, etc for you. it also allows you…

Need some advice....
I need some advice on the best course of action. I am running a half marathon on Jan. 20th/13. Yesterday I ran 10.5 miles. Next Saturday's long run is 11 miles. But next weekend I will be visiting my mom for Christmas, starting Friday. So I was thinking of running my 11 mile long run this Wednesday, Boxing Day instead of…

What type of undies do you wear.......?
......for working out? Be it either running, biking, hitting the weights or whatever makes you sweat? Me...I'm a Fruit of the Loom cotton girl myself. I know that cotton is not the best but I can't see wearing nylon or whatever for running or biking...no stretch, comfort or move ability. By the end of my workout though my…

Rest Days..Important or not?
Do you think rest days are important? Should you/ do you take them or are they just a waste of time? And if you do take them, how often in a week do you take rest days? And what do you do on your rest day(s)? Absolutely nothing? Or if you do something, what do you do on your rest days?

Half training question...
I've been running for 6+ years. This year I have done 8km/10km/16km races, a 10 mile race (July) and a Half Marathon (Sept). Regularly I run 3+ times a week for a distance of between 5-8 miles each time. I used Hal Higdon's Novice training program for my first Half and will use his training schedule (probably Novice 2) for…

Winter running....
I plan to run outside through out the winter. Can I wear the same sneakers that I run in now or should I buy trail running shoes for example for better traction in snow and better insulation? I have never run outside in the winter before but would like to start. But I am not sure what to do about my footwear. I obviously…

Need Advice...
With my half race done and the running/racing season drawing to a close here very shortly, I've been looking for events to keep me motivated and focused on working out and increasing my fitness level. Unfortunately, those associated with running are few and far between in the winter. They will re-start in the Spring of…

Calling all runners…..is this wise or just plain stupid?
I am training for a half marathon that takes place in 5 weeks from yesterday. I will tell you that I haven’t signed up for the half as of yet. I have until the end of August to do so. It’s my first half and honestly I am nervous about it (thus the hesitation in signing up), afraid that I won’t be able to do it. All my…

Advice please...
As my MFP friends know I am running a half marathon on this Sunday - Sept 23rd - my first half. I am both nervous and excited. This is my taper week which calls for a 3-4 mile run on Tues, a 2-3 mile run on Wed and a 2 mile run on Thurs, followed by two rest days on Fri and Sat. (as per my Hal Higdon training schedule). My…

I DID IT!!.....
I ran my practice half marathon run this AM. And I did it in 2 hours and 23 mins!!! YEAH for me!!!!! I did it!!! I feel so empowered. I wanted to be under 2 and a half hours and I was, but it was less about the time and more about seeing if I could run and finish 13.1 miles. I started running at 6:10AM and the only…

YEAH!!
Hi my fellow MFPers. I debated on posting this as regrettably I do not have before and after pictures. I avoided cameras as much as humanly possible in the before stage. And for the fact that I don’t like to brag, but I wanted to celebrate my success. And what better way than with my MFP family. And for the fact that I am…

What people do when others are not looking...
I took the bus today as my husband has the car for work (we're a one car family). Anyways, I sat across from this young (probably early 20s) girl. Sorry to gross anyone out this early in the morning, but she was picking her nose and then examining the contents...no tissue used. And I don't mean a gentle swipe but a dig…

Am I naive?
Am I naive in thinking that I could possibly do a half-marathon that's scheduled for Sept 23/12? I've been a runner for about 5 years and have run 5km, 8km, 16km and 10 mile races. The most recent one, the 10 miler, was a week ago. I trained hard for it and did well. As a motivational goal, I am thinking about running a…

I can not tell a lie....
because I didn't have to. Yesterday when I renewed my Passport, I didn't have to smudge the truth when it came to the part about how much I weigh. I wrote what I am and it felt great not to bend the truth a little (or a lot). How about you? What has been your NSV lately?

Heart Rate Monitor watches....
I hope you guys can help. I hear that a heart rate monitor can give you a more accurate calories burned number plus a lot of other helpful info. I was thinking about getting a HRM watch, but there are so many brand names (Gramin, Polar, Suunto, Timex, etc.) and the prices vary as well. I bike, run and weight train. I'd…

Getting close....
I am running a 10 mile race 3 weeks from this Sunday. I had a mental goal of 30lbs lost before the race....and as you can see I still have 3 lbs to go. I know that 1lb per week is (or was) obtainable, but I am almost near my ultimate goal of 32 lbs lost (5lbs to go), so my weight loss has slowed as time goes on. I'm still…

How do you change your mind...
All my life I have battled my weight. It seems its been a constant struggle in my life forever and a day. I have finally realized the healthy way with relatively clean eating and exercise. With the help of my fabulous husband (whose support has been unbelievable) and my MFP family (thank you guys), I've lost 26.2 lbs and…

I just had to tell someone.....
I am tickled pink.....can't stop smiling. The reason: I have lost 24.4 lbs and 11.75 inches, so my all my pants that hang in my closet don't fit me anymore, therefore I had to go shopping. I was thinking that I'd gone down a size or so, not thinking there would be a real big difference.....thinking perhaps down to a size…

Fitness Goals
Just wondering if I should customize my fitness goals. When I initially joined MFP and set up my goals, I selected "guided" - which was recommended. I am now thinking that I should customize and manually change my fitness goals -I want to increase my per week weight loss. How many here are working under the "guided"…

Help!!
I have a cupcake smothered in icing sugar sitting on my desk. My boss gave it to me. If I eat it (as per his instructions) in order to stay within my calorie limit today, I won't be able to have supper. I did strength training today...so only burned about 280 calories. If I don't eat it, my boss will be mad...and I don't…

HRM
I am looking into getting a Heart Rate Monitor. I hear that are really good. But I am not sure what brands are better, what features I should be looking for, etc, etc. What's the scoop on these? Are they as good as they say? If so what should I be shopping for? Or should I be shopping for something else entirely? Just to…

Do you eat all your calories for the day?
This may have been addressed before, but.... Most times I have about 300-500 calories remaining at the end of each day. My total calorie allotment comes from the 1200 MFP gives me and the daily exercises I do (calorie credits, if you will), which when added together lands me at between 1800 and 2000 calories per day that I…

Strength training - important or not?
Like everyone here, I am trying to lose weight. I did about an hour and 20 minutes of weight training this morning. But when I logged it, along with walking my dog for 30 minutes, I only burned about 123 calories. I am just wondering if I should forget about strength training for now and focus entirely on doing cardio…

It never fails.....
Every time I cut out the "bad" food and start eating really healthy and up my working out routine, in the hopes of shedding a few pounds, I get a head cold. Someone once told me that it's because you're immune system during the "revamp /change over" is compromised and thus you're open to catching the flu if i'ts going…

Rest Days
Do you think taking a rest day...no exercise....say once a week is important...for the body for recovery time? Does the body need it, especially if you're doing a lot of cardio? Or is this just a myth; and the body can take what you throw at it and it learns to adapt? What do you think?

Newbie from Canada
Hi everyone. I've been stuggling with the same 20-25lbs for years now and finally decided that this was it. I had to get rid of it. So I set my sights on a 10 mile run that happens in a couple of months as my motivation. Its been almost 2 weeks and its hard. I love carbs & sugars. And of course there were a few slip-ups.…
