Would you consider this a strength or circuit workout
My basic workout routine is as follows: I work in circuits of three exercises. As an example, I do 4-6 cable rotates (target abs) 4-6 Bulgarian Squats on each leg (target gluts) 4-6 dips (target shoulders / arms) I repeat this three times, then move on to the next three exercises. The only rest is to prepare the equipment…

3:58 mile on a treadmill
This is simply astonishing to watch. The video runs for 4:30 because it takes 30 seconds to get up to 15.1 miles per hour. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Reckless-Running/102247379861779 Watch the whole thing -- just mesmerizing! Anthony Famiglietti is a two-time steeplechase Olympian (2004 and 2008) who lives in my town…

$50 gift card at a running store -- what to get?
Last fall I won a $50 gift card to a running store in Asheville, 2 hours away from where I live. I'm heading up there this weekend and would like to cash in my prize. Problem is, I don't know what the store carries -- they don't have an online store, so I need a bunch of ideas on what to get. Open to any suggestions for…

Holding the handrails on treadmill?
So, I've noticed a few runners / walkers at the gym who constantly hold the handrails or the "handlebars" on the treadmill as they workout. Some of them seem to be hanging on with almost a death grip. Others seem to be bearing weight using the handrails. I'm talking about doing this constantly for a 20-30 minute workout.…

Tempted to count sex as an exercise? Here's how
http://io9.com/seriously-though-does-sex-count-as-exercise-1452095982 I get that in about 7 minutes of running. So it's not exactly a *great* exercise, but arguably it's a lot more fun than some of the alternatives!

What to do with phone for a half
I'm running a half-marathon (Kiawah) tomorrow and the bag drop area is listed as "unsecure". I'd like to have my phone after the race. Do you think it's worth the risk to leave the phone (brand-new iPhone) in the drop-off area? I've certainly never had an issue finding stuff I've dropped off at races. I have a Spi Belt but…

At what point would you go to the doctor?
On Saturday after my race, I was doing a cooldown run when I tripped on a crack and crashed hard on the concrete sidewalk. Scraped my elbow, and bruised my knee. On Sunday the knee still hurt but I managed to run 13 miles. I iced the knee twice that day but it continued to be painful. This morning I went out for a short…

Some statistics about running and safety from crime
There's been some discussion on MFP about how dangerous it is for people, especially women, to run in isolated places in the dark. I decided to look into the crime data in the US to get a sense of how dangerous it really is. I ended up writing an extended post on the topic; here's a snippet: Here's the link to the whole…

Western States Qualifying just got harder
For all you ultra runners out there, it just got tougher to qualify for the Western States 100 mile race. Now most of the qualifiers are 100 miles, with just a few 100k events and no 50-mile qualifiers. The rationale is that the number of applicants has now gotten so high that the chances of winning the lottery even with a…

Why are overweight / obese people reluctant to exercise?
After seeing posts from many, many MFPers about how they are reluctant / embarrassed to go out running or go to the gym, I decided to do a little research and see if there were any studies about social stigma and exercise. It ended up being interesting enough that I posted it to Science-Based Running. I'm posting it here…

Lifting / double / 10k...when?
So, due to the government shutdown (long story) I will be running a 10k on Saturday (http://ioprun.com/). Obviously I wasn't planning on doing this but it should be a fun race and I'd like to do well. That said, I don't want to disrupt my planned workouts. My usual workout schedule would be to do a double tomorrow…

Nothing new on race day? Even new shorts?
I know the mantra is "nothing new on race day," but I just got a new pair of shorts that I like a lot and would like to wear them for the first time at a 15k tomorrow. Is that a crazy idea? I don't think chafing should be an issue because I wear compression underwear underneath. Plus a 15k isn't a very long distance so it…

I know 3 runners who missed the cutoff for Boston
The Boston Marathon just announced that runners who qualified by 1:37 better than their qualifying time or worse would not be admitted to the race. http://www.runnersworld.com/boston-marathon/2014-boston-marathon-cut-off-is-138-under-qualifying-mark Amazingly, I know three runners who qualified but didn't make the cut: 1.…

A small confession
Here it is: I don't let MFP automatically post all my workouts to my profile / friends. Instead, I manually add selected workouts, using the MFP format. Why? Because it just feels dumb when my friends say something like "Great workout!" when all I did was an easy recovery run. So I save it for the serious workouts when I…

Who knew? Flavored water
I have long been a skeptic of the "flavored water" trend but since I have sworn off diet soda (and sugary soda) I really need an alternative to coffee and tea, so I decided to give flavored unsweetened water a try. The first one I tried was Hint Blackberry and I have to say it was delicious and satisfying. No sweeteners,…

Thinking of starting a 10,000 mile challenge. Any interest?
I just realized that I've logged over 7,000 miles since I started tracking my mileage using a GPS. At this rate I should be over 10,000 miles by the end of 2014. I'm sure there are others who have logged more miles than me, but I thought it might be fun to track "lifetime running" similar to how there are monthly running…

Today's vocabulary lesson: "Chaffing" versus "Chafing"
Today's vocabulary lesson: "Chaffing" versus "Chafing." Runners do both. But which is which? To "Chaff" is to joke or jest. "Joe's chaffing made the run go much faster today." To "Chafe" is to irritate by rubbing. "This chafing is going to make for one *&*$ of a painful shower!" KNOW THE DIFFERENCE, and BE A BETTER RUNNER!

Are there any calories you *don't* record
I have a secret: I don't bother recording a few things in my food diary. I don't record creamer for my coffee, or the grapes / cherries from the bowl we keep in the fridge, or occasional nibbles of other treats. I'd guess this all adds up to 100 calories a day. Does anyone else do this? What are your "off the books"…
