    Hey, Good Morning!
    Hockey morning, so quick hello.
Got a great hair cut yesterday, and enjoyable visit with Ted. We had an early dinner at RThomas. I enjoyed mashed potato w. portabella mushroom gravy, quinoa with a small amount of some kind of tasty sauce, broccoli steamed with fennel, and a millet casserole. All were very tasty! And I got the 'big bang' drink..fresh apple juice with ginger and lemon, served hot in a hefty oversized cup...14 oz. of YUM!

Ok, ingredients out on counter to make a batch of 'ranch' dressing...cashews have now soaked for an hour, and the date for its 10 minute spa bath! Time to get moving, breakfast, shower, etc.

Rain her all day....and from what I can see all night.

    Later...

    Hi Valerie
Lucky me, the rain ended early enough Sunday that I did not have to detour around any puddles or flooding.

    Have a Good Day

Howdy y'all. It's sensational Sunday! 62 out there now with an expected high of 67 and 80% chance of rain. I did get to the store yesterday, despite the miserable weather, and picked up everything critical on the list as well as a few non-critical things. We did stop at Taco Bell prior to going to the grocery, thus I was not shopping hungry. I found another 8 inch cast iron skillet at the thrift shop and decided, on a whim, to buy it. This one is Basic Essentials, made in China, and does not quite seem to be quite the quality of the Lodge branded one, but it is another 8 inch to have on hand, in case I need to make two small cornbreads or pies or even cakes. One could make some interestingly shaped layer cakes using cast iron skillets, I think.

The reviews on Amazon for Basic Essentials cast iron are a bit mixed. I don't know whether this one is the "old" Basic Essentials, which I gather, from one of the reviews, was slightly thicker and heavier, or the "new" Basic Essentials. I may take some measurements when it's cooled down and see if I can figure that out. The "old" ones sounded better, at least according to that review. I also understand the same set is available at K-Mart or Wal-Mart for less. Some comments said the cooking surface was more pebbly than the Lodge pans.

The seasoning on the Basic Essentials pan needed some work so I did a partial scrub using a Brillo pad and got one coat on last night, but as it didn't really look well sealed, and the finish still looked rather flat, rather than glossy, it's baking in another seasoning coat right now. If I think it needs yet another, it will get it. It's not going anywhere and I don't plan to go anywhere today myself. :)
    Hi Ed
I tend to take the glowing reviews on Amazon with a grain of salt until I have checked with another locations reviews. The ones that have a mix of reviews I trust more.
Sink has been cleared. Cats got me up later than usual this morning, which was good, as I was rather late to bed this morning, about 1:00, and was feeling very much like a passing out pumpkin by the time I got to bed. Having no nap yesterday seriously exacerbated my turning into a pumpkin at midnight.

Supper was extremely late, due to having Taco Bell around 4:00 in the afternoon as a snack.

In about 10 minutes I can turn the oven off and take a peek at the "new" pan. It looked glossier, at least on the bottom, through the oven window, but will get a better look and then let it cool thoroughly in the oven, which should take several hours too. Can't see the glossiness of the cooking surface through the window, as the pan is upside down for seasoning.

*UPDATE* The seasoning definitely looks glossier now, but I think I'm going to add one more baked in coat later today, as the cooking surface, while looking fairly glossy, still has some flat looking crannies here and there, so perhaps the surface is, indeed, more pebbly, so it might need more coats of seasoning to be a better non-stick pan. Time will tell. I mostly use the 8 inch ones for corn bread anyway, and I use plenty of oil or butter for that so this shouldn't be a problem for me.

I'll let y'all know, just for the heck of it, what I figure out about whether it's from the "old" or "new" Basic Essentials line. Inquiring minds want to know!
Interesting, I suspect that I would just go for the best quality to start with as IMO Quality pays for itself in the long run.
Update: Based on my measurement, the "new" pan appears to be the older, heavier Basic Essentials. As heavier cast iron seems to heat more evenly, this makes me feel like I got a pretty good deal there. :)

Hasn't completely cooled yet, but will be baking again sometime this afternoon.
That is something I would not have thought about that heavier = more even heating. What would have occurred to me was that heavier would take longer to heat and would hold the heat longer.
15,000 eggs. I'm rather astonished that the grocer could even fill that order! That's a lot of eggs.
I suspect that the foods ordered at the Olympics come from a wholesaler :)

We did watch a little Curling yesterday.

    Have a Nice Day

Howdy y'all. It's marvelous Monday! 59 out there now with an expected high of 60 and 40% chance of rain, mostly morning showers. I'm more than ready for this rain to quit for a while.

Had baconized mac and cheese for breakast. No clue what else I'm going to do today, but hope a nap is in there somewhere. Should push Eddie to do some housecleaning but really the cool and damp seem to get in my bones.

Do need to clear the sink and feed the cats.

I'm back from walking again and no cents. The temperature this morning was 27 on the porch and on the cable news channel. The temperature has dropped Quite significantly since yesterday.

    Hi Ed
It sounds as if Your weather was decent. Since You mentioned rain I was wondering did the reservoirs ever reach 100% ?

Your mention of Mac & Cheese reminded me that yesterday I used one of the NS White Cheddar Mac and Cheese cups, It was tasty enough however It made a mess inside of the Microwave. I had to pull the glass turntable and wash it in the sink, then take a damp sponge to the rest of the inside of the Microwave :( Since it is not that large a cup I am not sure it was worth the bother, I should have done what You did and chopped up a couple of slices of the CostCo precooked Bacon to throw into it.
Interesting and since it is an image I can save it easily too.

    Thank You
    Roger

    Howdy y'all. It's terrific Tuesday!

46 out there now with an anticipated high of only 48 and 10% chance of precipitation.

Sink needs to be cleared and cats need to be fed eventually. They have had a tiny snack that should hold them over, as they get (or at least are offered) treats when Lilo gets her Tuesday shot, which I usually do first thing in the morning.

As always, she was crabby about it and very vocal in her displeasure but took it like a champ. One of these days she's going to surprise me and bite the *KITTEN* out of me when I do that but not today...

Shopping list is updated, and looks like I'll need a grocery trip soon but not necessarily today.

So...today is Fat Tuesday, but tomorrow is Valentine's day AND Ash Wednesday.

Is that the most conflicted day ever, for those who participate in Lent, but also participate in Valentine's day?

I suspect a lot of people will celebrate Valentine's day and Fat Tuesday at the same time today.

    Watch out for exploding people!

    Hi!

Had to catch up on yesterday before I could look at today's posts.
Loved the pix as usual, that box of puppies!! OMG what fun. But then they grow up to be a box of dogs...which would be a bit 'much'. Down here Roger they're trying to pass a 'Pet Lemon Law'...like car lemon laws...No, I am not making that up.... Some people thing it will be a good thing for pet owners, and others say its only protection for the pet sellers because of the way its structured...will be interesting to see how that works out.

Ok, Ed...I must be dense or something. Valentines day and Ash Wednesday??? I don't understand. Ash Wednesday those who can go to church and get their foreheads marked with ashes....but how does that impact Valentines Day,...unless they're giving up chocolate or sweets? I never participated in Ash Wednesday when I was Catholic. So maybe I'm missing something there...is it a fasting day??
    Hi Valerie
Pet Lemon law ? What a waste of time, most people that get a pet that has health issues have already become attached to their new pet and only want the seller to pay for issues as I understand it.

I wonder how that would affect those the give away pets, I include individuals and animal Shelters and Rescue organizations ?

From other posts I have seen here some of the ladies are giving up Chocolate or sweets for lent and since that starts on Ash Wednesday, They had to celebrate anything in that category by Fat Tuesday.
I have daffodils blooming in my yard, and Daphne is already loaded with half open buds, as is my Mahonia. Spring must be soon, she said with her fingers crossed and HOPE in her heart!!!
I am so over winter, as usual!!

I"ve never been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday. I think I'm a bit too old now! Have either of you been there for either?

Time to start looking around for dinner food! and 'here comes da kat' OH, and Roger I took a pix of my Lacto Kale. (also called Dinosaur Kale by some...Lets see if I can attach it here.
    If not...will see you

    Later...

I did see the image as a link to it with a thumbnail shows at the bottom of You post.

I have seen pictures of Daffodils blooming through patches of snow, they are pretty hardy. I hope You are correct regarding spring coming soon.

I have been to NOLA, however that was in January, AKA Off Season. I did much of my vacationing off season in January when You see the best lodging rates and low crowding and traffic.

I would sort of like to go, OTOH I'm not sure that would be a smart thing to do as I suspect that the low lifes are out in force for Mardi Gras.

    Have a Good Day

    Howdy y'all. It's wonderful Wednesday!

Happy Valentine's Day and also Happy Ash Wednesday. That should get a lot of people awfully conflicted. Beginning of 40 days of deprivation (for those who do Lent) combined with a day that is a traditional day of giving, receiving, and EATING, chocolate and other sweets. Can't exactly have it both ways today, can they?

A friend said she'd heard that a lot of people were actually asking for church dispensations for Valentine's day but really? That's not exactly how I remember dispensations normally working. One simply didn't ask for a dispensation just so they could eat chocolate or meat on a day when that's not supposed to be done, at least not without a better reason than "because we want to"...oh well, live and let live. I haven't participated in Lent for over 40 years so I'm not going to worry about it. I had a beef patty for breakfast so I'd have already messed up anyway. LOL.

Easter this year will be on April Fools' Day, so better check closely on what the bunny brings!

48 degrees out there now with an expected high of 62 and 20% chance of precipitation.

Need to clear the sink, maybe do some laundry. And might get out to Kroger but might not. We'll see.

And need to feed the cats. They're not being shy about reminding me either.

As I recall it You would ask for a dispensation for medical reasons as an example.
The Church made many changes over the year, Switching to English instead of saying the mass in Latin, Exempting Seniors from the Friday restrictions and others.
