Did anybody catch this 5/3/1 article recently?

Notice his training split? Not gonna' lie... I'm a big fan of that. Damn, I may have to practice my Cleans again. LOL!0 -
It's peculiar that he posted this again, this is an old article from back before May. Good stuff though.0

Oh really, I must've missed that one. It could be in prelude to T-Nation adding a 5/3/1 and Wendler forum. I'm so friggin' jazzed about that I can barely contain myself. I wonder how much they compensate him or if just selling his book on their site is the way they do it.0 -

Oh @#$%$#@% that's awsome!
EDIT: Holy **** he responded to your post!!! That's so cool man!0 -

Yeah, he's pretty cool like that. He'll answer most questions, BUT do not ask a question that you don't want an extremely direct answer too and surely don't argue with him. LOL0 -
I might just try arguing with him for the hell of it lol But yeah, I like the forum.
Except that bit about straps
So how have you changed your routine since you talked to him. Are you still keeping the volume high, or trimming it down a bit?0 -

To a degree he is right about the straps. At the same time I'm only looking at the injury prevention aspect of it which is why I'm making some changes.
I pretty much did exactly what he said but I went to the BBB Variation 1 template.
This week...
- OHP Day
5 @ 105
5 @ 120
5+ @ 135
5 (joker) @ 150
5 (joker) @ 160 - failed to hit all reps so I stopped
B. OHP @ 105 5 x 10
C. Chin-ups 5 x max (it was something like 10, 10, 8, 7, 5.. forgot exactly the last couple sets. I just rest-paused those sets to hit 10 reps but I only count the first consecutive reps before failure)
D. Triceps 5 x 10
Abs
<done>
-Deadlift Day
5@255
5@290
5+@330
5 (joker) @ 370
5 (joker) @ 390
5+ (FSL) @ 255
B. Squat 5 x 10 (I did the opposite movement today)
C. Back Raises 5 x 10 @ 35
<done>
I used his exact Joker reps and percentages from his book this week as well. In order for me to reign myself back in and stay focused I have to go by-the-book and not go by feel for a while. Once I'm consistently back on-track I'll make slight adjustments based on how I feel but still try and keep the basic structure.0 -
That's cool man. I know we talked about it on the other forum, but have you considered Template 2? The effects of training are cumulative, and it I find I'm a lot fresher from day to day doing this.
Also, what you mentioned on the forum was actually not Var 2, it was Var 1... which is ****ing brutal 5x10 at 85% in WK 3? Killer.
Var 2 is very similar with the reps changing; Wk1 5x10 65%, Wk2 5x8 75%, & Wk3 5x5 85%.0 -

Yeah, there's so much info in that book that I mix things up from time to time. Variation 1 of BBB is what I intended to use but I don't think I can do it with the OHP. On that 5th set I struggled to get an 8th rep at 65%. LOL. Tomorrow I'm going to Bench and see how it goes. For OHP I may try 55%, 65%, 75% and see how it goes. Or I might just do his 50%, 50%, 60%, 60%, 60%, 70% <deload> (6-Week Challenge).
I kinda' like the idea of doing opposite exercises, but I also like how hard I pushed the OHP the other day with the main set work and then BBB work. I'll probably do temp 1 for 6-weeks and then try temp 2 for 6 weeks and make a judgement call after that. Then it'll be friggin' New Years already... ugh.0 -
Hey man, what do you know about recomping?0
-
Hey man, what do you know about recomping?
I understand the concept but am a little rusty on the application to be honest. I'm not sure how to approach that differently than a "cut". Almost seems like workout days are more calories and carbs, while off-days are a little less calories and low-carb.0 -
Ah. Yeah that sounds like intuitive bull**** to me. I thought there was more to it.
I rather just bulk and cut0 -

Yeah, I honestly couldn't give good direction on that. I went to the IF Calculator and if you select re-comp that's basically what the calculator returns. There's probably more to it than just that, or not. LOL0 -
I love the first set last and joker sets. Im trying the 8-6-3 twist proposed on T-nation this week for a couple cycles just for some volume work, but I still am doing FSL and joker sets with it.

edited to add the link. just something that looked fun to try for a bit.0 -

might be worth looking into after reading your post on the TNAT 5/3/1 forum. Sounds like you want more volume without getting too beat up.0 -

I read that too and that is a pretty interesting approach to 5/3/1. I don't know that I would try it for anything that I'm working on right now because BBB addresses my goals pretty well, but I could see myself experimenting with 8/6/3 for accessory work because accessory work is all volume oriented.
As Brad uses that approach it seems like a good way to add strength and volume to off-season athletes without burning them out in-conjunction with their other training. It was a very cool approach.
Chad Wesley Smith over at Juggernaut Training Systems has a cool modification too.

Nah, I wish. I was going to join when they offered the $9.99 / month but I got side-tracked and missed it. I'm not paying $20/month. I may do it once just to see what it's like. How about you?0 -
i got in because I was already a member. Its pretty awesome so far, webinars, diet plans, workout plans, all that stuff is supposedly coming as it moves forward. I'm excited about it. I used to lift in my 20's but never with a plan per se, just did the standard 3x10 back/bi, chest/tri, legs split. Powerlifting is new to me, only started a year ago, so the info im getting from there has been eye-opening. I love Wendler, his philosophy, 5/3/1. I was excited to see his forum too.0

Hmm... maybe I'll have to join for a month or two. It does sound pretty awesome.0 -
And another variation from Mr. Wendler. Haven't read it yet. I'm scared to, I like what I'm doing:
http://www.t-nation.com/workouts/beyond-531-program-1-1
I'm also no fanboy, so I'll just say it... advertising a "stack" in the middle of the article is concerning. Don't get me wrong, we all need to eat, but this seems kinda lame coming from him...
Edit: Ok I just read it, and it looks to me like BBB Temp 2. Am I right? The only difference is that the % on the BBB sets is static at 75%, and it's all 5x5?0 -

I read that, its a 20 week plan. And I was going to mention the stack too! Only because we were JUST discussing this right?0 -

I honestly don't think that came from him. T-Nation editors seem to add in there brand names into articles automatically. There seem to be articles where the author says Fish Oil and they insert "Flameout" or creatine and they insert their creatine brand name, etc. Jim doesn't seem like the type to sell out. I worked with John Meadows once for 16-weeks on my diet plan and he prescribed a site call "TrueNutrition" and that's where he actually gets his supplements from. But if you read his T-Nation articles there's mention of XYZ supplements in there, which at least at the time he didn't use. It's probably also a condition of their agreement. I tried Mag-10 for about 6-months before switching to Xtend and I did not see any difference. Now I don't use either because I don't see the point at all. The only real supplements of theirs I like that I think are different are the FiniBars and Surge pre-workout which I would actually take post-workout. LOL. Other than that the t-shirts are pretty bad-*kitten*.The rest of it I can get at Vitamin Shoppe on the cheap.0 -
Yeah, maybe you're right, but that kinda sucks. And did you see the photo of Jim with the 5 ft dia weight plates? lol
So far I've stayed away from suppliments, the only thing I like is prot powder for convenience sake. About Surge though, careful with that ****. Candito was taking it too but it was found to have dangerous steroids in it as well.
EDIT: Wait, **** sorry, that was Craze... http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2013/08/05/bodybuilding-site-suspends-sales-of-sports-supplement-craze/2618967/
Either way, I'm not putting any of that stuff in my body, and my wallet is all the better for it.0 -

Surge Pre-Workout would actually be great for Carb Back-Loading.0 -
just came across on Twitter... not really sure what to think other than a brother has to make a dollar I guess.

c'mon man...0 -
Yeah, I've made peace with this lol Truth is, he's gotta eat, and if we give him any credit on this, he probably does use the stack and stands by the products.0
-
and see... *kitten* like that makes me feel like Im not too crazy to consider taking a pre-lift.0
-
Hey man a lot of people do, and if it's safe, I don't see an issue with it, provided it isn't dope. There's a fine line there but nevermind that conversation.
Hell I've even heard that even the FDA is full of **** sometimes, and I put a lot of faith in them... but still something about the complete lack of regulation in the supplimentation market, mixed with all the marketing and big promises, makes me cringe.
That said, I kinda wish I didn't, because it would be nice to take something as a pick me up before my session, and it probably won't hurt me.0 -
Believe it or not, I actually bought a pre-workout yesterday. I bought Xpand 2 by Dymatize. The ONLY reason I bought this is because the research on it was published in a peer-reviewed journal and it indicates that members of the test group made really good results compared to the placebo group. I figured that I would give it a try since it has legitimate results displayed. We'll see how it goes, I start it tomorrow.
The website is down right now but the journal was published on the JISSN site.0
