Runners that need some nutritional accountability

Thanks @quilteryoyo @Elise4270 @shanaber ! I think I physically look more like my father, but I catch myself making the same facial expressions my grandmother made in photos. My mom had a full time job when I was a child and my grandmother did a lot of raising me, so it’s not surprising!1
-
Well. Here’s my efforts for day one. I did plan on one portion of fajita meat and veggies. Then went back for more and then went and ate a flour tortilla with butter and honey and then ate another. I realized that perhaps I am being unreasonable in the small portions, my body seems to think so. I will have to remember to go to fruit and hot tea if I just wanna watch Netflix and snack, when I want to eat but am not discernibly hungry.
My writing is hard to read. But thought someone might have insights.0 -
@Elise4270 - Your post made me remember that planning is one of the best ways to be successful. If we just "wing it", we end up eating crap! During the week my lunch and breakfast are always planned. And at least 4 dinners are usually planned. But this time off of school is a disaster!
@shanaber - sorry you had a rough day on xmas. I remember last Christmas something similar happened to me. I don't know if it was on xmas day but I know my DD was here so it was that day or right around then. Grrrr I still get mad remembering it.
The Air Fryer isn't that great so far. Also since I'm a vegetarian what am I going to really use it for other than veggies which cook just fine without an air fryer! We made french fries and they turned out not very good. We didn't preheat it though and maybe that was the problem. Tried again last night and they were a little better. But, I don't like french fries very much anyway!

Re: the discussion of maternal influences a while back, here’s a photo of my grandmother the actress. This was taken about 1949 I think, for an article about local theater. Her TV show was on in 1953/1954. The article itself is funny because it goes to great lengths to explain how women can have careers AND families! And her husband thinks it’s great, hahaha! It’s also interesting that the article takes pains to point out she uses the name Miss Firstname Maidenname on the stage and Mrs Husbandname Marriedname socially.
She is beautiful! Love the fact she was ahead of her time!0 -
I got ready to have my usual yogurt and granola for breakfast and remembered I needed to make more granola. So I had toast and peanut butter for breakfast with a protein coffee and ate it while I made granola. I also remembered that I had some dark grade maple syrup so I used it for the granola instead of honey. I can't wait to try it. May have to have yogurt and granola for lunch2

I've never heard of protein coffee before. I'm going to look for it. Does it taste any different than regular coffee?
Adding that I looked it up to see exactly what it consists of and also the many benefits of it. You can buy protein infused coffee or add whey protein to coffee. I'll have to add it to my list, thank you!0 -
@Loveychar - it isn't something you can buy. I just add protein powder to my coffee. 😁2

I tried that and it won’t dissolve. Does yours? Or is there a trick?

I overshot my calories today by no less than 600 calories. Why? I think Netflix is to blame. Day two pre tracking and it seems to be a thing. Now I’m going to have to establish a new pattern and embrace that hot tea. It would help if dh didn’t buy 3 boxes of triscuits.

Bulletproof makes a cold brew protein coffee but I can't drink it cold.0 -

I went back to check my weight last year on New Year's Day and I lost a little over 11 pounds this past year. I have also gotten in a lot better shape, so I am happy with that. I know my weight is going to be way up tomorrow. I have not one, but two gatherings today. One is at my neighbor's for the traditional New Year's "good luck" meal and the other is at my niece's for our family Christmas get together where we will eat again. This also means that it is highly unlikely that I will get any exercise in today. I'm not going to worry about it and just enjoy my day.
My main fitness goals for 2020 is to lose 10 - 15 pounds and run the AF Half Marathon in Sept.2 -
I’ve had 3 practice days to work on identifying and making a plan for the New Years food. The sabotage was found in chips and triscutis- salty crunchy carbs. So my efforts need to go into resisting these foods that dh brings home. I’m fine until I have 1, then it’s the whole box or can. I realize I can’t change this with a mere decision, but if I can find a way to put action, er non-action to it, I might succeed. I do tend to eat with stress so the upcoming surgeons visit and classes probably tie in. Anyway, i have to take control of my eating.
I’m going to move back toward the high fat diet, it seemed to be the most successful with weight and food cravings. I’ll discuss any cholesterol concerns I have with my doc. I think the heart anomaly spooked me a bit and I quickly bought back in to fat is bad and damaging, even thought he assured me it was normal as a runner. (But I’m not running).
Food goal for the year? Anyone have a plan? @quilteryoyo congratulations on losing this year! Way to go!1 -
@Elise4270 I can't have chips or cheddar cheese popcorn in the house. If I do, I'll eat the entire bag. I actually use Triscuits as my substitute for these. I can eat just one serving of them and it seems to satisfy my desire for a crunchy, salty snack.
As far as food for the new year goes, I am working on eating fewer processed foods. I'm not being OCD about it, but when I can, I am making substitutes. I hope to not be working quite as much as I did last year, so that will allow me to cook more at home. I do much better when I do that. I have found that I can't be on an actual diet. It works for a little while, but then I fall off the wagon and gain it all back. So, I'm just going to try to watch my portions, cook more, exercise more, and see where that takes me.1 -
@quilteryoyo - awesome on the 11 pounds down in 2019! Enjoy the day with your two outings! I am copying your goal on eating fewer processed foods.
@shanaber - home made granola, wow, I'm impressed!
@elise4270 - The high fat diet concerns me too. I did one along with the many other fad diets probably 10 years ago. When I was at the convention in December one of the teachers was doing the Keto diet. And of course, I'm eating vegetarian, so we couldn't be more opposite. She was obsessed with "butter coffee". She would add about 7 little containers of butter to her coffee. She said she had lost about 35 pounds, but I'll be curious next year to see if it stays off.
My DD flies home to Portland today. She's had a pretty bad cold/sinus problem most of her visit. I am up 5 pounds and in my danger zone. Even with all my running! Once I'm back at school it will come off.
I am looking up vegetarian meals to cook in the air fryer. When I was in Portland last year I had some delicious coconut fried tofu at a Thai restaurant so I'm looking for something similar.

@ddmom0811 I could like butter coffee! But I just use heavy cream and I’m lactose intolerant so... I may embrace black coffee this year. Although the butter would add the fat.
I think I did okay on the high fat, I did try to keep it natural fats the best I could. Avocado, grass fed beef, coconut, occasional dark chocolate, not many nuts (migraine), and not enough fish since were landlocked and it’s just awful. In Hawaii that’s all we ate. Mmm. I will eat the good Irish butter like cheese on bread. Too much of it! So I can see the appeal of a butter diet! Does it remind you of the woman in Bruce Almighty who lost 5 pounds on the krispy kream diet? Haha!
I really like the idea of being vegetarian. I may try to do a higher fat, (coconut) veggies diet and limited animal. Sounds delicious actually and makes me want Indian food! I have all the ingredients for a korma.

Today’s fatting foods
Cubed steak. Yesterday I fixed one with acorn squash and rice. Dh fussed that i didn’t cook them all, so today I cooked them all, but was under cooked for his liking. *sigh* uh your welcome?
And a whole avocado.
I’d like to call that my day, but know I’ll snack. So korma it is, eat all the veggies!1 -
Here in the South we believe in ringing in the New Year bloated from lots of sodium and legumes! Hopping John (black eyed peas with ham), greens, and cornbread. There’s a saying that if you have butter for your cornbread and pepper sauce for your greens, you have enough. The superstition is that for each pea you eat, you will have a good day in the coming year.
Anyway the scale is up three pounds since yesterday.
The peas have turmeric in them, since I feel a lupus flare coming on, which is why they’re peculiarly orange.2 -
I updated all my spreadsheets yesterday preparing new ones for the new year and finishing up my YTD trends. I was surprised to find that my weight is trending down for the 1st time in 2 years and I am about 8 lbs lower than I have been in over 2 years. I still want to lose another 15 to get back to where I felt and (to me) looked best. So eating plans for the new year have to be supportive of that.
I really need to eat more veggies. If you look at my diary they are pretty sparse and it surprises me because I love them. I think I am was just too lazy to fix them. I used to eat salad pretty much every day for either lunch and/or dinner as well as carrots, celery, pepper slices, etc. for snacks and I want to be there again.
I also need to meal plan better. When I do, we eat better, go out less often and aren't trying to figure out dinner at 6pm.
I made a coffee cake, bacon and eggs for brunch while we watched the Rose Parade. We are having ham and veggies for dinner. DH leaves on Saturday to take DD's pup back to Seattle and while he is gone I will make split pea soup with the ham bone and leftovers. Then we will have chili and soup in the freezer for meals and I think I will make spaghetti sauce to freeze as well. I have recipes for some shredded chicken cooked with salsa and maybe shredded pork (carnitas) - both made in the IP and are good for several meals. I think that will set us up pretty well for a couple of months especially with chicken and other meals in between.
@ddmom0811 - I have been making the granola for years now. It is super easy and really doesn't take very long. I can send you the recipe if you want it.
I have a friend who does the butter coffee too. I think it is disgusting. I do eat lots of cheese (especially Irish Cheddar), peanut butter, avocado and other good or better fats. I try to keep it within my macros though.2 -
@rheddmobile Being in the south and one of my meals today was the traditional, with other things too, I know my weight will be up tomorrow too. We had hog jowl and country ham. The ham is so good, but oh so salty!!! I give myself a week for the leftovers and the weight to get off, then aim to be good for a while. Not stressing over the over abundance of food eaten today.
@shanaber Great job for being 8 pounds lower than you've been in 2 years!1 -
Did you guys know that there's a shoe on Netflix, The Mind of a Chef? Dates 2016? Produced and narrated by Anthony Bourdain? I wonder if it's a recent release? My dd looooooves him and didn't know about it. It's on my watch list.0
-
I did not know about it @elise4270 and you know how much Dh and I loved him. I will definitely be checking it out!1

Has anyone tried making lasagne in their IP? I saw in one of the other threads, maybe January? that someone was going to make it. I would love to try it.0

I saw that. But I vaguely remember who shared that, maybe @kgirlhart. Might ask. I assumed itd be a mess if I made it that way. But seems like a good idea.
Ugh I have a cold. I'd been taking NADH to help prevent colds and keep my brain from fogging up. When we to see alex I didn't want to pack it and here I am with a headache and a half stuffy nose and a sore throat. I should have been smart enough to realize holiday travel with lots of snotty kids would likely get me sick.
Food today?
I tried to bribe dd to go with me to the university today with a walk and a subway sandwich, no takers so far. She's already fretting over a 12 hour course load with an intro math class. I keep telling her ” do not to give me that crap, you are smart enough to do math”. But I can see she's worried. I assured her it is up to her to manage her academic load, I understand. I've had some hairy semesters with 3 kids, divorced, no job, driving 2 hours to school.... It's hard to have nothing but school to do. 🤥 Just an adjustment, she'll get there.
So, subway
Or left over korma today.
Since my throat is sore I asked dh for ice cream. I may get it. So, I'll have something to resist later.
The scale is down 4 pounds. I didn't dare get back on it in case it was an error. I'm taking it today. Reality tomorrow.
Make today great!2 -

It wasn't me. I think it might have been @hamsterwheel6 .0 -
I will have to ask over in the Challenge thread and see. I can't imagine how it would work in the IP - you need lots of liquid so it doesn't burn... hmm... maybe in a separate pan sit-in in the liquid in the IP. I did that with the stuffed peppers I made.
@elise4270 - I hope your DD has some success with her classes and it boosts her confidence. It is always scary to start something new and for lots of people math is scary in and of itself. I love it and don't completely understand why but I think you have to just get beyond the initial fear and see the ultimate logic behind it. My sil was traumatized by math as a child and never got over it. She passed that fear onto her daughters. All of them are very smart people and would have no issue with it if they didn't let the fear get to them and tell themselves 'I can't do math'.
Food today - I got my hair done early this morning so a protein bar on the way there. Now having coffee and coffee cake that I made yesterday, before I go for a run. My back is really hurting but I want to give it a try. It seemed to help on Tuesday so maybe it will help today too. Lunch may be a turkey sandwich and a salad and dinner, leftover ham.2 -
@elise4270 - Never heard of it but I may look for it too. So hard to believe he committed suicide. He seems like he had it all.
@shanaber - great job on the weight. Mine is trending the wrong way! But I hope to get back on track, especially starting next week. I'm doing much better today now that everyone is gone. As much as I am loving being home, it will be nice to be in the routine again of the same meals.
@rheddmobile - We had black eyed beans w/rotel spicy tomatoes mixed in. Then we just had cole slaw for cabbage. The rule we go by is you have to have cabbage and black eyed peas. Generally it is with ham but since I'm veggie, we didn't do that. This was the first year we didn't go to MILs for the NYD meal. It's terrible to say but we always hated the meal that day. It was just never a good way to start out the year. Since DD was flying home in the late afternoon, we said we couldn't go. MIL is not feeling well and I think it was a relief to not have to plan/cook. We dined with her the day prior anyway.
Today I started off with oatmeal and then had to run errands and I got a salad at Panera. Greek Goddess salad - but asked for no chicken, add quinoa mix. And no bacon. It was pretty good. Not very filling but still pretty good.
It feels weird not to run after the streak! But good to take a rest day, although I am going to lift in a little bit! Upper body.

@Elise4270 Hope you get to feeling well soon! Congratulations on the scale being down. I'm sure it wasn't wrong!1

I still feel yucky today. I’d hoped yesterday was the worst, but apparently not. We’re out of cat food so I could go pay it forward at the local Walmart. Otc cold meds are ineffective. I’m whining. My teeth hurt. You know when your braces are tightened? Like that. I assume it’s just sinus pressure on nerves. Tylenol does help the headache and mild fever. Baby bear loves me.
Yesterday's food
Large grilled cheese on sourdough bread
Dh brought dominos thin pizza, I ate 4-5 pieces. So that's probably like 1-2 slices
Weight is back where it was. Yesterday was a funny from the universe
Today's food
Otc cold meds and coffee.
I'd love a chicken noodle or rice soup. But that won't happen unless someone feels for me today. And gets cat food while they are out.
What is your best ”im sick” remedy? My eye won't stop watering from the pressure, horrible. Maybe it's a brain tumor.1 -
Hi! dropping by because lasagna.
So, yes, I made it in the instant pot, and it was great!
If you have a 6 quart one, you will need a 7 x 3' round cake or spring form pan ( I used a spring form, but did wrap foil around the bottom because it will leak a bit). And the trivet thing that came with pot - or a sling if you have one or of course you can make a sling with foil if you have one - this is needed to take the pan out of the pot easily.
It was a huge hit!
The recipe I used was this one: https://amindfullmom.com/instant-pot-lasagna/
I subbed fat free ricotta, and 2% part skim mozzarella and really used only 4 oz of it. Also use 93% lean ground beef. This kept the calories less, but did not affect the taste at all. At least to us.
What mine looked like before it go devoured.

Yum! Thanks @hamsterwheel6 - that looks delicious. I have the 6 qt and a pan that I bought specifically for it so I could do this. I bought the pan when I wanted to make stuffed peppers. Now I can't wait to make it!1
