@shanaber I love wine, but it goes straight to my head. I hope Hobbes is okay.0

@ddmom0811 I saw that race. It's actually about 1.5 hours from their house, which isn't too bad, but I hate to spend half a day of the two days I get to see the grandkids doing something else. They are in school, so Sat and Sunday are the big days to spend with them. It looks like a fun one.0

I put the candy in the break room. All of it. I was tempted to keep a few pieces but did not. I also haven't had the chocolate in my boss's office this week. Small victories.
@shanaber Oh no! I hope Hobbes is ok! I always worry when the dog falls off the couch or bed. I've had two dogs that have a tendency to stretch and fall/roll off.2 -
@RunsOnEspresso Yeah for getting rid of sharing ALL of the candy. Proud of you!1
-
@RunsOnEspresso - good job! Lots of small victories add up to a big one!
@quilteryoyo - yes, I don't blame you! Unless you can get them all to go and cheer you on!
@shanaber - oh no!!! that is very scary about Hobbes! At first when I read your line that said "too much wine" I thought I misread the previous sentence and that DH fell off the bed. But now I realize that was not related to the falling off the bed!
5 miles this morning. I'm working on breathing in through my nose which is slowing me down.
I don't know why I bother freezing the parts of a meal that we don't eat. I never eat them again. On the weekend the freezer was getting so full (I couldn't fit my pint of ice cream in it!) and so I said we are taking out all the frozen left over meals and eating them this week. Each one appeared to have freezer burn - so I through them out anyway. I need to just save the freezing process and if I make too much and we don't eat it, don't bother! I only freeze something if I made a huge crockpot or IP meal and there is enough for two to eat. But we never go back to them. Now I have lots of containers in my tupperware/rubbermaid cabinet!2 -
@ddmom0811 Is there a reason that you want to concentrate on breathing in through your nose? Everything I've read lately says that you should breath in through both your nose and mouth. Had to laugh at not being able to fit the ice cream in the freezer. That is tragic!0
-
Thanks all for the concern about Hobbes. He seems to be fine. Got up in the morning wanting to bounce around as usual and ready to play some more with Molly.
@ddmom0811 - I laughed at your comment about dh falling off the bed! Honestly it would more likely be me. When we are with these friends Cathy and I just talk and talk and sip and sip and have no idea how much we drink. Her husband and my dh just don't seem to end up drinking as much but we all have so much fun and laughter together!
I do freeze lots of soups, chili and spaghetti sauce and we end up eating most all of it within a month or 2 of putting it in the freezer. I don't freeze much of anything else altho I did freeze some of the ham because we weren't going to be home to eat it.
@RunsOnEspresso - great small victories!!2 -
@shanaber It's great to have friends like that!

I had planned to do my long run for the week today, but a friend of mine from out of state is in town. She and her boyfriend came over for a visit and we shared a bottle of wine and caught up with each other instead.2
-
@quilteryoyo - sometimes enjoying some time (and wine) with friends is more important than that run.
I did run a very slow 6 miles and now I am eating donuts. DH went to the fancy donut place and I have little slices of 5 different flavors. So far my favorites are Meyer lemon with Thyme and Ambition Coffee cake.3 -
@quilteryoyo - I saw an article about breathing in nose and out mouth. It was to protect your lungs/voice because your nose has filters in it. But, it wasn't any expert writing it, and it isn't working for me!
@shanaber - it's great to have friends like that! Wow, must be quite a fancy donut place. We've got one here that is small with all kinds of things and then the famous Portland donut place, Voodoo, now is somewhere by the theme parks, but I've not been. I can pass on donuts for the most part. I used to love them but I think they made me gain a lot of weight (okay, the donuts themselves did not make me gain weight, but me eating them did)! So I sort of lost interest in them. This was back in 2011 I think and I was doing one of my many fad diets and this one was where there was a cheat day. That was a disaster for me. The amount I ate on the cheat day was ... well... just gross. I was good about having it only once a week for a couple months and did lose weight, but then the cheat day would turn into 2 days. Then 3 and you get the picture. So cheat days are not for me!
I made chili today (going to be cold tonight!) and a Lentil soup that is pretty good (crockpot for first and IP for second). I'm soaking Navy beans and going to throw them into IP soon. I don't know what I was thinking making 3 things because we eat out Thursday night w/friends!
Had a pretty slow bike ride in cold temps this morning (only 27 miles) but I did 47 on Saturday and lifted yesterday.
Run in the morning!2 -
So where are you guys with a stick to swat my hand away from food when I need you?! Today I ate a ridiculous amount of calories. I subbed at the daycare. Since it is MLK day, our normal lunch provider wasn't available, so they got pizza for the kids AND the teachers. I wound up eating 4, yes 4, pieces of pepperoni pizza and 4 sandwich cookies. Oh well. It was good. Try not to feel guilty and do better tomorrow.0

Just 4 slices? Wow! That is good. I eat the whole pizza when we get it! Mmm pizza!1 -
I can't eat most pizza because it upsets my stomach. I have found I can eat the flatbread ones that don't have much if any tomato sauce on them (or anything else for that matter) though and we get it occasionally from BJs Brewhouse here. We had it over the weekend with leftovers tonight. It isn't too bad on the calories and I usually have a big salad with it. Tonight I had agility class so just pizza when we got home because it was late. I didn't have a lot of calories today but my food choices were pretty good.
I am battling trying to run a longish run before my (last) HM on the 2nd. I failed on Saturday and ended up with 6 miles and tired cranky legs. Rested yesterday and tried again today. Got in 10 but it was pretty awful and I walked most of the last 2 miles home. My legs were tired and my right foot and IT band were hurting with each step when I tried to run. I am sure something has changed in my form but I can't figure out why or what. One good thing, my left knee was just fine, no pain, no complaints. Fix one problem and create a bunch of others I guess. DH told me not to worry about the HM, don't even run it if I don't really want to but the trouble is I wanted to run it and do well since it will likely be my last. I am discouraged and figure I may just have to walk it.2 -
I knew it would happen. My weight is up this morning. It was yesterday too. So I'm going in the wrong direction this week. Got. To. Make. Better. Food. Choices! I did great last week, but I was home all week. It's much harder when I'm working, have breakfast at 6:30 am, and don't get a break until 12 or 1. I wind up eating some of the food they have for the kids, if there is any left, just to tide me over. I do have a large salad I took yesterday to eat. It's still in the fridge. I hope to eat it during my break, or while the kids are sleeping, today so I can run as soon as I get home. We'll see.
@shanaber I'm sorry you are continuing to battle leg/foot/IT band issues. It is good that the knee was okay. I hope you can make it through the HM since you want to do it so badly. Hugs.0 -
@quilteryoyo- I think I had four slices on Sunday night.
Had the MIL and her BF over. They drink alcohol free beer (and she mixes hers with sprite to make a "radler" which is a German drink -- she's German). So I give them both beer mugs from Germany that we have. Hers was Paulaner, his Lowenbrau.
MIL: Paulaner - you know Opi drank that! (Opi is her father and what my DH called him, yes we know, heard it 50 times which is why I gave her that beer mug)
BF: Paul did what?
MIL: PAULANER - IT'S THE BEER MY FATHER DRANK.
BF: PAULINA? WHO'S THAT?
MIL: PAULANER!!! PAUL - A - NER! (points to her glass)
BF: OH WHY DIDN'T YOU SAY SO?
MIL: Which beer is yours?
BF: WHAT?
MIL: YOU NEED TO WEAR YOUR HEARING AIDS!
BF: NO I DON'T.
MIL: LET ME SEE YOUR GLASS? ... OH YOU HAVE LOWENBRAU
BF: ...(repeat all of the above)
I just looked at my husband and said, "I have a headache, got to go to bed". LOL, neither heard me at all.
So because of the stress of the above, I don't know how many slices I had but I think it may have been 4. Then we had carrot cake for their birthday. She's born the 17th and him the 16th. DH is the 25th, so we get to repeat it all next weekend. MIL never wants to "celebrate" my DH's with hers because he's so special he deserves his own celebration.
@shanaber - so sorry your run was bad. Why do you think that's your last HM? You mean forever? or just for a while?
I think you will get better and run more! After all you are one of those HM maniacs or whatever it is called.
I need to get shots in feet again so I can run one again!

@ddmom0811 - the diagnosis on my knee from the ortho team was post-traumatic osteoarthritis most likely from when I tore my meniscus 6 years ago. I can continue to run, am encouraged to continue to run, just not long distances. They told me to keep it under 3 miles. I told them I would keep it under 6 😊 It doesn't mean I can't run longer just that it will exacerbate the damage to my knee and eventually it will hurt too much to run and will need other treatment, most likely a replacement. Honestly since I have been keeping my runs pretty short, mostly 4 miles with an occasional 6, my knee has been fine.
I have no words about your MIL and her BF other than hang in there! Hopefully we will never be them 🤣
@quilteryoyo - could you take some snacks with you to the daycare? I found having my choices at work helped a lot so I didn't get so hungry I just ate whatever was available. Something that is easy to nibble on while you are running around with the kids like a healthy protein bar, cut up veggies or cut up cheese and a handful of almonds

This made me laugh out loud. My mother is passive aggressive about not putting in her hearing aids when she invites me over sometimes! That way she gets to do all the talking.0 -
First week of classes and I think I've already done more work than all of last semester. I hope someone brings home a pizza.1
-
Finally have a good IP recipe to report!
https://www.cookwithmanali.com/instant-pot-mediterranean-lentil-soup/
I added red pepper and put it over a 1/2 cup rice. Came out really good!
@shanaber - agree - hope we don't turn out like my MIL and her BF.
@rheddmobile -- ahhh it makes sense that he wouldn't put them in so HE could talk. He just turned 89 and he is actually pretty funny and witty but the two of them together... you can only take it for a short time.
@elise4270 - wow! That's crazy that it is so busy already! But you can do it!1 -
@ddmom0811 That's funny. My mom and dad both wear their hearing aids, but unless you get mom's attention first, she can't hear what you say. She needs to concentrate. Some conversations are interesting, to say the least. I am getting pretty good at telling by their responses whether they actually know what I said or not. That is why I try to go to their doctor's appointments with them. They think they know what is said, but really don't. Good luck with the rest of your visit. Try do control the stress eating. BTW, I love carrot cake!
@shanaber It depends on which class I am in whether I can have time to eat healthy snacks during the day. Plus, you get out food and the vultures children circle. I guess I could try to keep something in the teachers area and grab something when I go to the bathroom and eat it before I went back in. Might have to try that.0 -
How are you all doing this week?
We went to the movies on Tuesday and I ate too much popcorn but other than that I am having a pretty good week. Trying to get used to the new workout schedule with the trainer that interferes with dinner now on Tues/Thurs and Agility that interferes on Mondays.
What I did this week is make dinner for dh and then eat when I get home. I really don't want to eat before I workout so it is what it is. I am thinking I will only continue to workout with the group thru March when the local gym opens so I should be able to handle this for a couple of months.
@Elise4270 - hope you got your pizza or something yummy brought home to you for dinner! Are the classes still piling on the work? I used to think professors did that at they beginning of the term to weed out anyone who didn't really want to put in the effort. You'll get through it and do just fine!1 -
I definitely ate more pizza than I needed. I think they are starting us off super busy because... uh... well, I guess because its just the way the program is. This is the easiest semester of the 5. In the first week people were written up for not having their books, assignments, or proper attire (ya no watch/book? come with me). 2 of the 7 of us in my AM lab were written up today, er warnings, not write ups. Two write-ups and your outI think. IDK how many warnings you can have. I'm hoping to have Z-E-R-O. DH says it's like prison. But I like it. I like rules and want everyone to get with it so we aren't falling behind or waiting on you-know-who to get it together, dragging us all down. There are 2 campuses and from what I know, 82 total. 51 on main campus (me) and 30ish at the other. Counting the class photos, it looks like ~70+ finish. Not bad. And that is a best guess estimate. NCLEX pass rate is 98.6% and the national average is 88%.
One class we're responsible for 6 chapters already... And thats not a little lab book kind-of-book. Its a two volume set where each chapter in Vol I has another chapter in Vol II. Vol I is 1400 pages. DH made me get a rolly bag because 40+ lbs of books is not good for me trekking to the 3rd floor 3 days a week or anywhere in between. Elevator fan here. I'm way to unsteady to navigate the stairs and in a 100+yo building; my classmates might get some hands on experience if I made that "trip".
Anyway, I'm so busy. everything is color-coded and I have a running list of assignments due so I don't get dismissed, (Lab or Lecture) for not having had the work done. I'm working on stuff from 5AM to 9PM daily. I quit counting my books. I am sure I have more than 20. I have 3 bags, Thurs AM Lab books, Thursday AM clinical bag, and the regular bag for shuffling in and out of the rest of the classes. I was looking this afternoon for an additional nice duffel. My coffee table has a rotating stacks of stuff to do. It'll have be that way for a while. I've already had to buy more printer paper and ink. haha! I wonder how crazy med school is compared to this. It's not hard yet, just busy. And I'm at the point where my leg and hip and "the butt" are unhappy doing anything or nothing at all. The leg is weird again, burning.
TLDR I have so much to do and to keep up with that I cant tell you what I've done or need to do with out consulting the master list. I'm really enjoying it too. I have a friend. She gave me a squishy ball today and her number. I'm good at this stuff (so far).
OK. I gotta go update/check the list. Another "don't forget" email came across.2 -
@shanaber I love movie popcorn. I can eat an entire large by myself!
@Elise4270 You are super busy. I don't know how you can fit in exercise or eating for that matter. Glad you are enjoying it. That's what matters.
Food this week has been awful! I thought I was doing good yesterday. I helped do health screenings at a local high school (one of my part time jobs). We did 1st and 2nd period, then had a 3 hour break before going back to get 4th period kids. So, we went to and IHOP for lunch and just wasting time. I thought I was being good. Tried to. I got loaded backed potato soup and a salad. Calories weren't bad, but the soup was probably loaded with sodium. Then, I had mandatory training for the daycare last night. They provided food. Yes, it was PIZZA again. I only had 2 pieces. Also had a snack bag of sun chips and a chocolate chip cookie. Just way too much sodium. So, I was up almost another pound this morning. I'm up 3 pounds this week! It's frustrating.
I did take running attire and got in a run before the training. I'm glad I did. It was a slow 3 mile run. I had hoped it would be faster, but at least I got it in and wasn't really pushing it.
Working in the one year old room again today at daycare. When I work in the older classrooms, my HR is normally a fairly steady state of around 10 PBM higher than resting. In that classroom, it is all over the place. Last time Garmin reported about 500 active calories burned. LOL1 -
@elise4270 - Wow - so busy! I am glad you are enjoying it and the structure. I suppose the rules are like what you would have to follow in the workplace too - you have to come dressed and prepared.
I know what kept my daughter sane was getting into a study group/cohort. But like you she is a type-a, super organized, do-it-all person and had to be careful to not be taken advantage of. They would get to relying on her to keep them all organized and on schedule and she would have to back off and tell them they had to be responsible for themselves. That said pretty much the entire group are still friends, been in each other's weddings, get together frequently, etc.. Essentially I think they will be lifelong friends.
@quilteryoyo - I looked at some loaded baked potato soup at the deli for that friend I help take care of. I was shocked at how much sodium it had (~2000 mg)! She can't have anything more than 5-600 mg so it was a big no. I hate it when you have to attend things where they provide food and there are no real healthy choices. Great that you were able to get a run in though!
So funny about the 1yo room - I am sure they are a busy bunch and keep you hopping!1 -
I think I'm all about helping as long as it helps me. But, ya the second I feel like I'm doing it for them, I'd have to back off. Right now its like when you give a group a common adversary and they come together stronger. I am sure we'll do study groups. Orientation they told us it be critical that we get over the being lone-wolf studier. Everyone professes to wanting to help others. I'm thought "really all yall? " I'm encouraged by the willingness in this group. I'm sure I'll see a lot of talk and not much walk, but I'm hopeful they'll surprise me.
Exercise? well. not I. I would if i could though. I need to see my PCP about my left shoulder thats not been getting better. so, swimming right now wouldn't even be advisable. But i have that bike... I should try to do. and violin is exercise, right?
I think I found my people; runners and healthcare workers.2 -
So, I gained 2.4 pounds this week. I'm sure it is mostly water retention from the pizza and baked potato soup. So, I'm not stressing about it too much. Hopefully I'll do better next week.
0 -
@Elise4270 - hopefully they will surprise you and there will be great study groups! Like you said it won’t be everyone, but I bet you find a group to work with.
@quilteryoyo -sodium will do it!
DH and I rode 60 miles yesterday for his 60th birthday. I know my weight will be up from that but as usual it should go back down during the week.
Today we go to my son’s and bring along MIL and her BF. With others around it won’t be as bad as it was last weekend. I’m hoping.3 -
Happy Birthday to your DH. Great way to celebrate.0
-
Looks like everyone here is busy! Hopefully we are all staying so busy we aren't snacking too much!
I've been making my energy balls every week -- https://www.gimmesomeoven.com/no-bake-energy-bites/
And trying to snack on those when I want sweets. They have a lot of calories but a least they are natural!
I have been grinding up some sliced almonds to mix in and use half honey/half agave.
My weight went up 2.5 pounds (twins with @quilteryoyo) after Sunday night's Chinese. It is slow to come off this week, but it will. Having everyone there was fine because the granddaughter (now 14 months) was entertaining us. I love that age!
Still awaiting on my Invisaligns to come in. In a way I'm glad it's taking so long because I love hot tea and it's been nice and chilly in the AM so a perfect time to drink it. I guess I have actually been having about 5 hot teas a day! (only 2 w/caffeine). There is a delicious decaf tea by Tazo -- Decaf chai.
So in a couple weeks it will work out that I can give up having SO many cups of hot tea.
