Runners that need some nutritional accountability

@ddmom0811 I have a question about your Invisaligns. Did your dentist shave some enamel off of your teeth to make room for the movement? The one I saw said they needed to do that, but I already have sensitive teeth, so I don't need to lose any. Also, my regular dental hygenist said the dentist in a neighboring town that does Invisaligns has really messed up people's teeth doing that and not doing it right. So, I'm leery about getting them.
BTW, my 2.5 pounds is now gone. Hope yours will be in a day or so.1 -
@quilteryoyo Definitely don't go see the the one with a bad referral if you look into Invisalign. Ones here will do a free consultation and plan. I'd just plan on visiting 2 and checking reviews or word of mouth. Congratulations on the loss of the gain too!
Food
Ugh. I don't know why I'm being so lazy. I had a burger, pizza and chili dogs yesterday. Swear. I gotta grow up.
Today just coffee so far. I'm hoping I can skip eating until 3-4 and make a better choice than I have been. But there's pizza and chili dogs left. The cats have a vet visit, I'm at the dentist for my cleaning, and I have school work oh and I gotta clean the house. The male cats have some kind of bug/parisite the wormer isn't getting. Yay. Anyway, maybe I can keep busy and make a soup or something normal.

@quilteryoyo - he said he might do the shaving but he is having the plan assessed by another ortho. Wow I hadn’t heard about it messing up people’s teeth. A friend had it done and hers look good. I will investigate. Great on your weight! I think it will be by Friday morning!
@Elise4270 - you’ve got a lot going on so that probably explains the eating. For me it all comes down to planning. Not that I planned dinner this week!
@shanaber - saw your comment on rest day. I have to rest on Sunday bc I am going to robotics competition the whole day. So I don’t want to rest my usual Thur or Fri but I won’t double up either of those days! I do have a goal of one rest day a week! When I lift I usually do an upper body or lower body. But decided last week to do full body each time. So that means I can’t lift every day!
This helps me because I was running and lifting many days a week. The weather this week is so great for morning runs I don’t want to skip a day! But I will only lift on Friday! 🤞
I tend to get cold sores - though not very much anymore. In my teens-40s they were awful. Always inside the mouth. I figured out over the years what causes them for me and use various meds to stop them from forming but I am having a terrible outbreak this week. So I can hardly eat! I think these were caused by a new multivitamin. I learned many years ago that One A Day vitamins cause them. This vitamin is a gummy for women over 50. So the last two nights I had a baked potato or sweet potato or ice cream for dinner. Just too painful to eat much else. My salad at lunch is so painful I barely finish it. At least this is rare for me now. It’s been probably five years since I’ve had this. I might get one but not 3 huge painful ones.
After I typed the above I realize that’s probably why I felt tired on my run today, not enough food.
2 -
Ya I guess I have a lot going on and that could explain the eating. I'm not stressed...yet. I do have 5 exams in the next 2-3 weeks. Maybe there is some underlying anxiety. But, I noticed I'm happy. Like I lay down at night and just happy having all my stuff ready for the next day and all the stuff I got done. I think I'm just being mostly lazy.
Today's food.
Coffee
After 4 chili dogs (2).
And the overindulgence... Triscuts and artichoke bruchetta spread.
I was pleased with myself, so I ate it. So I'm probably eating as a reward.
Cats
The vet wasn't sure what they had. So treatment is panacur (Rx wormer) and clavacillin for what seems to be coccidioidosis but unsure on the microscope. DD called that one. The vet was impressed. That's my girl. 3 days --three doses, then another 7 days twice a day times two cats. Least it's all liquid. And I'm supposed to try to get some yogurt down them. Cat wrestling should be an Olympic sport. Boo bear is feeling spry I tell ya. Monkey Monster. The vet assistant gal tried to take his temp. He wasn't having it. Seriously. He puckered up, no way she was getting it. She gave up.
And I bought decaf coffee for the evening and accidentally out of habit made regular and drank every bit before realizing. So I'm up.1 -
@ddmom0811 My hygenist said the "bad" dentist was shaving the enamel and leaving a ledge. This made food get stuck in between their teeth and causing issues. My dentist went in and tried to smooth it off so the food wouldn't get stuck, but wasn't entirely successful. She said that it is the manufacturer of the Invisaligns that recommend the shaving, but they aren't dentists. Makes me wonder. I thought about going back to the one that was recommended to me and asking him if he can do it without shaving off any enamel. Just wanted to let you know about this concern. Sorry about your cold sores. I have one too, but mine is on the outside. I do use abreva now when I first feel them coming on and that helps it to not get out of hand and heal quicker. It's expensive, but you don't have to use much. Not sure it helps inside the mouth though. I usually get one when I have a fever, hence the name. But, this one was brought on by over dry, chapped lips. Hope yours go away soon and you can eat comfortably again. Will Ora-gel help?
@Elise4270 Hope the meds help the cats. Giving them medicine can be a pain, literally. Dogs are much easier.0 -
@quilteryoyo thanks for the info! The Abreva does work if I start it when I feel it coming on. I buy the Walgreens brand of it. But one is on the underside of my tongue and that one is the most painful and abreva won’t stay on it. Then in the back of my throat! But I did feel some coming on the inside of lips and used abreva on those and they didn’t appear! Yay! Feels a little better today unless I talk or swallow.
Lost the 2.5. Nice run this morning , 4 miles! Hair cut and color this afternoon, yay!1 -
@ddmom0811 - I used to get them all the time. SO miserable! I always thought stress brought them on and never thought about it being food or vitamin related. Fortunately I haven't had an outbreak in a pretty long time. You know they are the same virus as chicken pox and shingles? I know when I had shingles as a kid it was stress related and a lowered immune system.
@quilteryoyo - When I got my Invisaligns my dentist thought he might need to file or shave a little between my teeth but when the analysis came back they said no. When I had my regular braces many years ago they had to file between my teeth in the back for the bands to go on, there wasn't room between my teeth for them otherwise.
@elise4270 - will the cats eat yogurt? Hobbes loves it. I give it to him every night (unsweetened, plain Greek yogurt) and mix his meds/herbs into it.
No run or workout for me today. We took the pup and headed up into the mountains hoping to find some snow for him to play in. Nope, most of the snow was gone in places that we could get to. We did have a wonderful time walking around the little town and went to a dog park where Hobbes could run around and play off leash. We sat outside at a brewery (in the sun because it was cold!) and had lunch. I could only eat half my burger and a few sweet potato fries but I did manage to drink my entire beer. Something I very rarely do. Figure I would have been better eating more of the burger but hey I'm carbo loading for Sunday, right?2 -
The cats won't eat yogurt. I had one that would only because she was so nosey I bopped her with it every time she stuck her nose my way. These won't. But, Beary will eat squirt cheese and I bet I can mix some for him. He currently not my pal since I shove meds down him 3x a day and hides behind the couch if he thinks I have an oral syringe. He did get me up at 430 to cuddle him on his sucky blanket. So I guess he forgave me for a bit, least until this AM's 2 doses and now he's outside. The other cat is okay about it all. He's too old/dumb to care.
Human food.
Yesterday I did better. I think I've had chili dogs three days in a row. This AM I awoke with a headache. So no dogs today. I should try to put on a soup. Really I should try to get prepared for an exam Monday.

Weigh-in today. Basically the same as the start of January so I'll take it. I'd rather stay the same than gain!3
-
@shanaber- I’m hoping they say they don’t have to shave between my teeth. Yes, I’ve heard it is that. I know stress can bring them on, but I for sure have identified certain foods as causing them. The worst I ever had was one time in my 30s when kids were little and we went to the beach for a week. There was a can of peanuts and I ate a lot of them. OMG I basically couldn’t eat the rest of the week — except slurpees and ice cream. I can eat peanut butter but not straight peanuts (or only a few).
Sounds like a fun adventure looking for snow! Good luck with HM tomorrow!
@RunsOnEspresso - yay! I’d take it too!
@elise4270 - you are making me want to go back to school! I do a ton of online learning on my own (have to in the IT world).
In other learning news, I’m enjoying an app called “Elevate”. I got a one year subscription for $39 which I know is ridiculously high for an app. It’s a brain training app (those of us afraid of dementia buy it out of fear!) and it has exercises in math, spelling, reading and memory. I’m so bad at thinking of words, but happy that my math is way above average. The company screwed up and charged some people twice for the annual cost and so they gave me a lifetime membership for free. I doubt I will use it for life, lol, but I’m enjoying it for now and it takes just 10 mins or so a day. As with much of the world, I have relied too much on Google when I can’t think of something and calculators and this is fun to do mental math and trying to think of words. I used to be an excellent speller but have lost the skill and there is a spelling game within the app too. (I have no interest in the company, just thought I’d share it since I’m enjoying it and I never play games on my phone).
As for eating, pretty much on track. Couldn’t ride today because of rain. This is the strangest winter I can ever remember here in FL. So much rain in the mornings, which was so rare here the last 35 years! I haven’t run or anything yet and tomorrow is all day robotics so I want to do something today! I lifted full body yesterday so can’t do that.
Ok, the rambling is done!1 -
I saw this on Instagram and thought it was pretty good. Although the person who originally posted it is apparently one of those beautiful body people who won’t stop perfecting herself. I thought it was a nice thought anyway, but I too, will continue to obsess about being “fit”.
3 -
@RunsOnEspresso - stable is always better than gaining! I would take it too!
@ddmom0811 - the worst I had was in college. I had to have one cauterized because it was so big/deep and wasn't going away. It was miserable but I think I lost about 15 lbs. Not a great way to lose though.
I miss all the classes and training I used to do for work (also IT). I would love to go back to school and take something for fun. To actually take college classes here is pretty expensive and I am not sure though that I would want to spend the money on it and the books, etc. if we would end up taking a trip in the middle and I would miss a bunch.
I have heard of that app but never looked at it. I think AAA here was promoting it for a while. I have a few cognitive type games on my phone but I don't play them much, maybe I should be playing them more often. I did sign up for duolingo (@elise4270 is my friend there) but I only did it for a few days and then got kind of bored with it. I need to do it more - I want to learn Spanish!
Food - after the burger and beer on Thursday I made yesterday a do better day which I was on track for until DH decided he wanted take out Chinese rather than what I had planned. We have a pretty 'healthy' Chinese restaurant and they have family packages that include appetizers, soup and an entree for each person. We got that for us and Hilde. Usually their food isn't too salty but something last night was. I feel like a balloon this morning. Today is yogurt for breakfast, fruit for snack, salad for lunch and grilled chicken with rice and veggies for dinner. I will fill in some other carbs in there to bring that up for tomorrow. Planning my typical pre-race oatmeal for the morning.1 -
I have a word game (free) on my phone that I play and Sudoku. I try to keep my mind going. I also would like to learn Spanish @shanaber . No plans as to how to do that though.
I was pleased with the scale this morning. I was down 4 pounds from last Saturday. Two of those were real weight. The other two were water weight from eating salty foods. I was pleased. I'm finally below the 145 mark. Hope I can stay there, but probably not next week. I'm going to FL for a granddaughter's birthday and I always gain when I go...not eating the same, eating more salt, splurging on the dip and chips they have at the party, etc. But, I know if I work at it, it will come back off in a couple of weeks. No guilt is my mantra.1 -
@ddmom0811 - I think to some extent we are all trying to continually perfect or improve ourselves. I just get really annoyed with the ones who have the beautiful body and see themselves as 'fat' and how they are struggling to lose weight but not really. I do like the sentiment and it is true that just because someone has a beautiful appearance they don't necessarily impact our lives or make us remember them. I have never seen someone and thought wow that person looks beautiful, I want to be their friend. I have however seen people and thought wow I would like to look like that one day, fit people my age or older typically like Ernestine Shepherd, because it motivates me to work hard to be more fit and stronger.1
-
I keep starting and stopping learning Norwegian on Duolingo. I need to start that up again and keep going. I need to remember I only have to do a few minutes a day, not a ton of time.
Some people that are thin do struggle with body dysmorphia. I think it's important to remember no matter where we are, we can still struggle and our brains love playing tricks on us.3 -
Studied all day, ate too much. So dern tired. @shanaber you might find online classes, I heard LSU was reasonably priced, but that was some time ago. I’ve lost my identity as a runner, so I’m a student once more. It’d be nuts not moving forward a bit. I wonder if I’ll ever recover enough to work again and this is all just keeping me busy. Which is fine. I’m interested and it keeps be occupied.
Food.
I can’t remember the brand, but I found fome frozen vegetarian bowls, not Amy’s which I do like. Dh wanted to try the cauliflower pizza so we have a few for tomorrow. He fixed fajitas for dinner and I was “ehh” on meat. I think I just don’t want it. So I’m hoping to get more of it out of my diet.
I did a health dna thing and the only thing that was interesting was that I have, for what they test, an increase risk for developing celiac disease. So hoorah, that’s probably why it is something I found to be best limited. I have no idea how accurate this stuff is either. No risk for peanut allergy came up, but did when I loaded the raw data to one site and they didn’t identify the vitamin B methylation issues either from said site. Well. Least I figured it all out anyway.
Eta the veggie bows are kitchen performance, or luvo? I'm not sure which is the brand.1 -

Was it a DNA test? Because a lot of people can have the celiac gene but that doesn't mean you will have it. Also, even if you test a positive blood test, again doesn't mean you have it. (My blood test numbers were off the chart high) Endoscopy is the only way to diagnose. A lo of those health test kits aren't reliable, at least for celiac disease. The community (doctors, scientists) say not to buy and believe them. I can't speak to other things they test. I read a lot about celiac disease, diagnosis, and developments.1 -

Ya I agree. It probably a crock, gimmick. Something that is talked about a lot and so it gets a reaction when it pops up on the "dna". I don't buy into this one, especially since it missed others. And it has a disclaimer that it doesn't check all the known markers for any result they give you. I was really just interested in the BRCA gene test. Which it doesn't appear that I have.
1 -
I love the idea of those tests and I think it can be a useful tool to take to your doctor to check for various things they may not have thought of (I probably developed celiac in high school but wasn't diagnosed until mid-30s). But the problem is people tend to take the test and go ok I have X and not talk to their doctor.
I've been debating doing the Ancestry Health since you can now have them do that with your DNA. But I go back and forth because I may never develop something just because of a gene. Do I want to know I have X gene and worry I may get X disease? I don't know yet.1 -

I chose ancestry for my DNA because I had an account and tree already set up. I don't remember the difference between all the tests/companies.0
-
Be careful with the BRCA results too. Many of the most popular only test for certain branches of the BRCA test that are not the most common. Breast cancer is prevalent in my family (mother's side, maternal aunt and grandmother) so I was interested and disappointed with the 24 & me test. They only test for one branch in specific Jewish ancestry. My doctor says you need to have the blood test to know for sure. I don't think my DD really wants to know and she was the only reason I was really interested.
There was however lots of other interesting things from the 24&me test. DH had his done and bought a kit for his brother and my brother agreed to do his. Interestingly, my brother's estranged daughter had hers done and popped up on mine. I haven't told him and she hasn't 'connected' to me - we haven't talked in years so maybe it will encourage her to seek me out and ask questions.2 -
Interesting. I ask my doc about it years ago, but no one could do it. They gave me a kit to take to the hospital for the blood draw, but wouldn’t do it. Something about insurance held it up, or I think they want you to say you have a family history. The docs office wouldn’t do it because it’s expensive and sometimes insurance pay, sometimes not. I just threw the kit away. I don’t know my history so it’d been nice to know. You’d think that if I can get dna done for 60-100 bucks, we could get breast cancer screening paid for. That’s the cost of 1 mammogram?1
-
Because insurance/pharma companies control health care. It's all to make certain people richer.2
-
When I talked to my doctor (years ago, male doctor) he said to me, 'what are you going to do differently if it is positive? Have surgery? You won't find anyone to do that as an elective surgery' so I never had the test. I am pretty sure, I hope, things have changed a bit. I do have a friend in TX who had it done maybe 7-8 years ago. She had lost pretty much all the women in her family to breast cancer including 3 out of 4 of her sisters and the 4th sister was in the midst of fighting it. She still had a horrible time finding a doctor who would perform the surgery and of course her insurance did not cover it.
How did everyone do with Super Bowl eating? DH got a pizza and salad so I just had salad. We did have some snacks earlier - little mini quiche and mini chicken tacos. Also my post race treat was a doughnut from our favorite 'designer' doughnut place. Not a great day from a macro perspective, carbs/fat were really high and protein not so much but I am ok with it.
Today I am back to my regular more structured eating. Yogurt for breakfast, salad with chicken for lunch and leftover chicken or Chinese for dinner.
My legs are feeling pretty beat up from yesterday so I am not going to run today. Will get Hobbes out for a good walk in a bit and we have agility class tonight. Hopefully I will not be so stiff by then.1 -
I was under the impression that insurance covers that preventive mastectomy. And Even covers breast implants. but honestly if I had the gene I would not hesitate to pay for it out of my own pocket. It would be so much easier to address it on my dime than to have to go through treatment.
I didn't watch the Super Bowl. But I still had ice cream last night. Today I'm making amends with a very large salad from Subway.
ETA we did find that the cauliflower crust pizza was very good or at least very sufficient, and didn't leave you feeling overly bloated and full. I think we're sold on them1 -
@elise4270 - I think with the attention preventative mastectomy has gotten (wasn't it Angelina Jolie who had one?) it has become more acceptable and the insurance companies are more willing to pay for it and doctors are more willing to consider it now.
Good to know on the cauliflower crust pizza. Was it a particular brand? I am not sure I could get DH to even try one but I might when he has his from the pizza place.0 -
I "watched" the super bowl by myself. Usually do. But, that is one day I usually allow myself to buy chips and dip and eat the entire thing. Yesterday, I substituted popcorn, with butter, instead. Not ideal, but a lot better, so I was proud of that. I had some ice cream also, which I normally don't do. I just happened to see it in the freezer and ate some before it went bad.0

The brand is CauliPower. I’m not sure he’d notice right off, especially if you add some toppings and if hes like thin crust.
Food.
I am up another 2 pounds this morning. Officially 3+ lbs over my “get serious “ weight. 10 since May. I swear it’s pms, well, probs some ice cream too. I did alright on my exam (prelim 92.5, I have no idea what that means. I hope it isn’t adjust down. We have to make 75+ or we get remediate. I’m prob in the clear there, this time), and rewarded myself. I tried to wear a shirt today that was too tight... it’s seriously time to get serious. What is the matter with me! I have 2 bananas packed for lunch and I’m not letting myself weasel in to McDonald’s or subway. Eat the dang bananas and drink your water! This has got to stop. Soup and salads from now on. Doo doo bird.1 -
@elise4270 - CauliPower sounds interesting, I'm going to look for it too!
Awesome on the exam! I am sure it wouldn't go down. At least I've not heard of that.
@shanaber - congrats on the HM! Saw it on Strava and was happy for you!
I ate way too much Super Bowl night. I had been at a robotics competition from 7am-6pm and when I got home decided I was going to snack! This was after eating about 8 girl scout cookies at the event. I had purchased Manchego cheese to eat with crackers but forgot about it on Sunday because DH had a bunch of stuff out. Then last night I saw the cheese so celebrated the Super Bowl again. There isn't much left (Luckily, I didn't buy much!)
I got a nice run in both Monday and Tuesday and want to lift tonight.
