@shanaber I would have to go to another town in order to get a second opinion. This is the one my regular dentist recommended. The hygienist was surprised that he said he's have to shave off the enamel. I've lived with my teeth the way they are for over 50 years. I just don't know if it's really worth it or not.

Sorry to hear that you had issues during your run today. I hope you aren't coming down with anything.

@quilteryoyo Did you ask why they need to shave enamel? Mine reshaped my teeth. My hygienist hates it because it leave the teeth a bit rough between them and I get tarter build up. I don't floss enough, well hardly at all. Anyway, it might not be a bad scary thing. And you might just say "I'm not keen on that, let's omit it and I'll take the results I get".

    Food
I'm a big ol fatty fat. Not really. But I need to take my weight seriously. No plans today. Had red bull.

I'm hanging out at Baylor in imaging. Waiting on my MR arthrogram and steroid injection. My primary surgeon seems hesitant about signing off of the osteotomy re-do just yet. I appreciate the initiative to find a noninvasive fix, but I just don't see it not being the next possibility. He's thinking THR, total hip replacement. Which is just *kitten*. I'd rather do the osteotomy and take the chance of it being livable. Idk. He's the expert and I respect that. It's just what I wanted to avoid because I'm absolutely sure it means no friggin activity ever. Lonewolf did/does it. So. If it is THE fix, maybe I'll do okay, but I'm not sold. Yay. Life and imperfections.

Eta cuz I'm a work in today and will be here forever...

This morning when I stopped for a red bull (caffeine addiction, travel + coffee= no bueno), a woman came in that knows the cashier and is on about how someone posted/shared that you (they) can just go to the local motel for breakfast free and took all the breakfast that was out. Haha! Well. I might try it if it was decent food! It was funny and makes me forget they are gonna stick needled and lots of stuff in my hip joint. Maybe I'll just go home and forget all this business...

@Elise4270 - I hope all the testing goes well and the injection helps!

I have a couple of friends who have had hip replacements (one or both). One a lady I taught with, much younger than me, had both eventually done to correct a congenital deformity. She was fine, much better than before actually and was very active. Not a runner but cycled and did lots of other things and I am sure could have run if she wanted to. I think the key as you know is doing the prescribed PT and then keeping moving.

Thanks @shanaber. That’s good to hear. I guess It conjures the image of an immobile elderly person when i think “hip replacement “. Only thing that matters is beary still loves me. Haha!

    We’ll see.

No mri or steroid today. My insurance wants a precertification. Yay. I go back in a week for the mri/shot. And back in 3 so see what he thinks about it. I think this mri is part of surgical planning (again), not just “what’s going on”.

    Food
    Too much schlotzskys

Now to see if I can steal a nap before I have to get back to course work.

@Elise4270 My hygienist says it's the Invisalign manufacturer that pushes for the enamel shaving. It gives a little extra room for the teeth to move. The "reshaping" is what the hygienist hates. She said that people get food stuck between their teeth afterwards and have many more teeth issues that necessary. I just need to talk to the orthodontist and see what he says. I hope they can figure out your hip issues and do something that will allow you to run and do all the activities you want to do. Sorry you didn't get anything done yesterday. Ugh.

I went over my calorie goal today. Just guessed at the calories I ate at my neighbor's 93rd birthday get-together! It was probably more than I put down. But, hey, you're neighbor doesn't turn 93 every day. That deserves a celebration.

@quilteryoyo I'm over my calorie goal daily! I hope the birthday girl/boy had a wonderful day! No way you could be part of it and not enjoy it also.

    Food
    Red bull
    Chick-fil-A wrap. Diet lemonade

    Dinner
Poo bear made (me make) chicken. Coconut rice went nicely with it. So good. I feel like I discovered coconut rice too late in life. So amazing.

I ate way too much rice. Like 3 cups cooked. And 2 chicken breasts.

DH went shopping today for salad stuff because it's getting that real over here.

@Elise4270 The birthday person is a lady. I spent many days at her house growing up, playing with her son. What is coconut rice? I've never heard of it.

Coconut rice is rice with coconut milk (the solid stuff not the milk substitute), cilantro, orange bell, or green if you like, and pineapple. I cook it in the pineapple liquid and the coconut milk liquid then stir in the rest while it's hot. I make it in the rice cooker. It's be good with some jalapeno or red pepper but I'm a sissy when it come to hot food.

Oh @quilteryoyo - I think it sounds wonderful. Kind of like a sweet Thai rice! Bet it would be wonderful with some BBQ teriyaki chicken!

We did a movie day again today. I ate popcorn with butter. I am trying to reign in how much fat I am eating and that did not help, at.all! I didn't eat that much but had planned to not eat any. It is hard though when you are in the middle seat and the popcorn is sitting in front of you so the others can get to it.

I did speak to my trainer last night about dropping my calories down since I am not running as far these days. He said no more than 200 so I dropped from 1950 to 1700 (close enough and easier to calculate my macros). So I am using 1700 for run days and 1500 for rest/easy days. I am planning, now that my legs and body feel more like participating in this running business, to do more speed work. If I can't run far any longer I would like to try to get a bit faster. We'll see how that works out...

@shanaber I could see it being good with BBQ teriyaki chicken. Maybe I judged too soon. I can NOT resist movie popcorn. It's the best. Good luck with your new calorie plan. I still use MFP's numbers, which change every day based on exercise, as you know. I have noticed that my Garmin has a lower calorie burn than MFP estimates. I'm thinking it is due to the fact that my resting HR is in the 50's. I'm sure that means I'm burning less calories. I went into the settings last night to see if they even take that into account and they don't. I guess I don't need to worry about it since I'm not a stickler about sticking to the numbers anyway. I only log to have a record of what I eat and make sure I'm not too far off one way or the other.

@quilteryoyo - They are going to shave a small amount between the bottom teeth. But it is pretty minor. He and the ortho he consulted with both recommended it. I asked about the enamel and he said it is fine (but what else would he say).

Regarding flossing... I floss every single night. No matter what. Even if I had way too much wine (or margaritas), doesn't matter. I started doing this many years ago because I read about how the plaque in teeth is bad for heart. It's a good thing I did because many years ago, I decided to change dentists and then I wasn't getting notified for cleanings and I went more than 2 years without a cleaning. I was really afraid to go back! When I did finally go in the dental hygienist asked me how long it had been. When she started cleaning she kept saying she couldn't believe it. Do I floss a lot? Just once a day. Now every time I go they say there is nothing to clean. Just a tiny bit behind bottom teeth. I highly recommend it. Wish I had done it when I was in 20s instead of late 40s!

Today was a brutal bike ride. It was 46F in the morning and windy. We bundled up but it was just SO hard. It was 43.5 miles and usually I circle my neighborhood a few times to make it to 45 but this time I couldn't WAIT to get home!

I started doing tabatas on Tuesday. @shanaber - the app I use is called Totally Tabatas. Just a free one. I always laugh when I use it because there are 8 repetitions of the 20 fast/10 slow seconds. After the first 20/10 it says "0 of 8 done". Then after the 2nd, "1 of 8 done". As a programmer, you probably remember we always start counting at zero and they probably have it in an array and they are counting the index instead of adding one for normal humans. So it never says 8 of 8 done (because that would be 9 if you start at 0). LOL .

OK back to the Tuesday tabatas. I think this has hurt my feet again. A year ago I had shots in the bottom of my feet for neuropathy and it is back. I couldn't figure out what was going on and someone asked me if I was doing anything different. No. Oh wait.. DARN IT!!! Yes, done those for 4 weeks. So... I made a podiatrist appt for Monday afternoon and going to get the shots again and then I will assess the situation. I was running really fast and hard for the 20 seconds (Garmin would say 7 min miles!) and then very slow walk for 10 seconds. I think it hurt my feet!
So I will be off running for the rest of the week.

My weight is still above where I like it, but things are fitting and I feel okay physically (not mentally when I see that #!)

Not sure if answered the questions or covered everything, but I'm sure you've read enough by now!

@ddmom0811 - that is hilarious about the app! Isn't it funny when we see things like that and know what they have done! Even with MFP I find myself screaming at their IT people wondering what the heck they are doing sometimes! Like this week with the diary crashing and being SO slow after they did maintenance.
I also floss my teeth every night and have for years as well. The thought now of putting my retainers in without flossing and potentially having food sitting there all night - yuck!
I hope your feet feel better! Maybe you need more cushioning in your shoes?

@quilteryoyo - unless you personalize your exercises in MFP they don't take into account male vs female, weight or age. So from what I could tell when I looked at it years ago, the running values are based on some average male. I found a calorie calculator where I could put in my age, weight, etc. and it gave me a reasonable calorie burn for whatever pace I was running and I added them manually to MFP. I am not sure you can even do that any longer.

I floss most nights too. May skip one or two nights in 6 months. For dental horror stories...I went to this particular dentist for 8 years. I don't have dental insurance, so every time I would go, they would ask me if I wanted x-rays or not. Of course, I don't want them if I don't need them. I don't know. I'm not a dentist. I was having some gum bleeding, but the hygienist never said anything like that was an issue. At the time, I only flossed occasionally. I decided to change dentists when I went in one day and it just felt dirty/unsanitary to me. WELL, the new dentist had a fit. I had the beginnings of gum disease and they hadn't been cleaning my teeth very well. I had to go back twice for deep cleanings. What a pain in the mouth that was...bet you thought I was going to say something else. Anyway, after that I always floss, but it still takes them forever to clean my teeth. They say I just make a LOT of tarter/plaque. They can tell I take really good care of them with brushing and flossing. It just doesn't seem to keep it away. My receding gums have gotten a lot better, but I have sensitive teeth because the enamel is bad too....from years of improper dental care. So, that is why I'm so leery of getting the enamel shaved.

@ddmom0811 Sounds like your bike ride was brutal, but you got it done!

@shanaber I always go in and put actual numbers from my Garmin into MFP for my exercise. I'm not losing weight very fast, but that's okay. I am down 15 pounds from a year ago. I'm happy with that number.

I'm psyched today! I ran my fastest treadmill mile ever today - 9:54 minutes. That's really good for me. I probably could have pushed it a little bit more as I wasn't dying or gasping for air when I was done. Also, probably wouldn't have gone that fast outside since I have hills to deal with everywhere I run. Still, I'm very happy and excited!

@quilteryoyo - awesome on your mile! That's good for me too! OMG that dentist story is awful! Glad you changed dentists. Wow, I didn't know that some people just produce more plaque than others. Maybe I don't.
@shanaber - I buy the highest level cushioning in my running shoes. I will ask podiatrist about it. He is also in my cycling group - and used to be a runner. He had to stop running because of a bad hip. So he took up cycling and is in the fastest group. Then his hip started hurting from riding so he got a hip replacement about a year ago. He said doing that was the best decision he ever did -- he was back cycling just as fast in 2 months. Hip replacements are much easier than knees from what little I know.

Today I did a bike ride alone on a bike trail, and it was really nice. The day was perfect. I waited until 11 when it warmed up. Made chili to eat a couple nights this week. Also bought a frozen cauliflower pizza per @elise4270's suggestion a whiel ago.

I ordered 3 weeks of meals from Hello Fresh. Got a coupon in the mail and thought I'd give it a try for some different options. It won't get here until Thursday and then I probably won't make them till M-W the next week so will let you know.

@quilteryoyo - after that experience I would be happy to have them take a long time and be thorough on my teeth! Congratulations on that fast mile! I hope I can get back to running that fast again someday!
@ddmom0811 - when I had my stress fracture they gave me a little pad that stuck to my insole and provided extra cushioning under the ball of my foot. Maybe there is something like that, that would help? How old approx. was your podiatrist when he had the hip replacement? I have a friend who is really worried about having one and afraid she will no longer be able to be active.
I am glad you got a good ride in today and it wasn't so windy this time.

I had a great longish run today with a little walking, a stop for Hobbes to play off leash with another pup and a bathroom stop. It never felt super hard and I was never out of breath. But when I got home I noticed some really strange HR numbers and patterns on Strava. Multiple times while I was running at a pretty average pace, my HR went from its normal 120ish down to mid 60's hung there a bit then went back up again. At another point, still running at an average pace, it went up to and hung at 146 for a little while, which is pretty high for me. It went back down to the normal zone but it was really strange. I don't know if it is my HR monitor or what. I did put in a new battery last week so it should be fine. What do you all think? Have you had anything like this? I will keep an eye on it and if it continues go and get it checked.

Also I had a bit of a victory today. My weight did not change when we were in Salinas but a couple of days later it went up about 3lbs. It is slowly coming back down and today I was down another pound, but more importantly the %BF was down a full percent and the %muscle was up more than a percent! Those values have not budged one way or the other for months, maybe a year!

@shanaber regarding the HR, is it wrist or chest strap? @MobyCarp always suggested if it's chest strap, it's a contact/moisture issue- not enough to conduct. My old Garmin was nutty, claimed my HR was near 200 and it prompted me to get a stress test, which showed no which near that. So, the HRM's are great, but not medical grade equipment. You can stop and count your pulse if you feel you need to check it. I never had much luck counting it, seems to beat too fast to follow.

    My food today.
    Fajita meat
    Avocado
    Sour cream
    Banana
    Coffee
    Heavy cream
No idea on the calories. But I resisted cereal and Noosa.

    Tomorrow plans
Red bull. I'll probably sleep to late to have coffee and all the bathroom visits I need. I have decided to cut out the cream, lots of calories I don't need.
And a cauliflower Mac and cheese for lunch before exam I'm only half ready for. I gotta restructure. I did lose Wednesday and frumped the rest of the week, not studying. I've looked at to many words today. They all seem wrong and foreign. I need sleep. Night favorite people.

DH is going with me to see my primary surgeon to discuss the next step.(Mar 11). Should be good.

@shanaber I was thrilled that the new dentist did it right and was very thorough. It was just painful. They had to give me nitrous oxide to get it done. It now only takes them about 30 minutes to get them clean. It used to take an hour. As for your heart rate, I would guess it was a HR monitor issue. Like @Elise4270 said, you can always stop and count for yourself, if you see it during your run. Congratulations on the movement in you BF% and muscle%!! That's awesome. Much better than a number on the scale!

Got the shots in the feet today. He said I could run Thursday but I may wait till Friday. Have to stay off my feet tonight. But I keep getting up to snack.
That cold that I almost got last week seemed to hit me suddenly today. So back to Cold Eeze!

We have ACT testing at school tomorrow so no classes so they gave us a Mardi Gras luncheon today. Best part was King Cake!

@ddmom0811 - so glad you were able to get another shot and can get back to running pretty quickly! I keep saying we should go get a King Cake. There is a Cuban bakery here that specializes in them!

I’ve been doing much better with my food choices, though not logging like I should be. I’ve been working on NOT eating the chocolates and mints in the jar on the counter outside my office at work. I’ve done well with the maranatha raw almond maple butter on toast with a banana and one cup of black coffee.

    Boiled egg for snack.

Lately it’s been some variation of protein and vegetables for lunch. Chicken thighs, brown rice, roasted mixed vegetables. Last week i also had chicken Parmesan, which was a joy and kind of an indulgence because of the chicken’s breading. Another indulgence was nachos 😎

Today’s lunch was salad with a spinach base, artichoke hearts, tomatoes ... tiny bit of ranch. It was delish!

I got some ghee from thrive market because it’s supposed to have a lot of anti inflammatory properties and some other nutrients. I’ll keep you all posted on that one :)

Well. Today is a good day to start a new do better campaign. With the lack of progress I've decided to set some rules; soup, salad and fruit only.

    Wish me luck.

@Elise4270 you got this! There are so many variations of each of those things - you'll be able to get creative and try new things within your guidelines!

Update on the ghee: I got the one that is just organic ghee with pink himalayan salt. It is a fantastic butter replacement, though I don't think it is very different in calories from regular butter. I think its purpose is to cut out more of the bad stuff and focusing on nondairy. Not so much cutting calories. The good news is: it's pretty good and it won't go to waste. :)

Ghee tends to have less lactose and protein than butter. That's about the only difference. It can be better for people that have issues with lactose than butter but is ultimately not much different health wise.

    Hi everyone!

I like to run, about four times a week at about 2.5-3miles for my training plan. I'm also in the process of losing weight. I know I should lift more than I do, but I don't like it.

I'm here because my runs have suuuucked lately. I get the burn in my quads almost immediately after I start. I have to push to get better times.

I've been prioritizing protein for lean muscle retention, but does anyone have any tips? Am I consuming too much protein? Run a little less? Just run it out and it'll get better?

I was so hungry after my run this morning. Not sure if was the heat or what... I had a banana, an orange off the tree (best rehydration ever!) and a handful of trail mix. Usually I have trouble eating much of anything after I run!

    @CupcakeCrusoe - couple of questions.
When do you run (early morning, after dinner, etc.?)
What do you eat before you run if anything?

ETA - also how long have you been running (i.e. are you new to running?)
