    @CupcakeCrusoe - couple of questions.
When do you run (early morning, after dinner, etc.?)
What do you eat before you run if anything?

ETA - also how long have you been running (i.e. are you new to running?)

I tend to run at about 10 in the morning, so 2-3 hours after breakfast, which tends to be an egg or two and some toast.

I am not new to running, but I'm getting back into it after not really doing it consistently for a few years. My pace is about a 12 minute mile on average. I'm using Endomondo's 10k training plan, and usually I do better than the paces it sets for me (12:52/mile is such a weird pace for me, right in between walking and running, so I run).

When I had the worst leg and quad pain, i think it was because of the shoes I had.

But also. If you are experiencing a lot of pain and soreness, an extra rest day will not hurt you - it will only help you. It will get easier, with less pain.

    Hi everyone!

I like to run, about four times a week at about 2.5-3miles for my training plan. I'm also in the process of losing weight. I know I should lift more than I do, but I don't like it.

I'm here because my runs have suuuucked lately. I get the burn in my quads almost immediately after I start. I have to push to get better times.

I've been prioritizing protein for lean muscle retention, but does anyone have any tips? Am I consuming too much protein? Run a little less? Just run it out and it'll get better?

It's unlikely you are consuming too much protein. On average how much do you get?

A lot of times people go too fast when starting or coming back to running. It is likely you are pushing too hard. Try slowing down or taking walk breaks.

Good luck @Elise4270 ! Keep us updated.

I had an unexpected bad food day today. So good, but bad calorie wise. I help the county school system do health screenings for the kids every year (it's a paid gig). We had one planned today where we would be finished around lunch. Today was supposed to be the only sunny, warm day of the week, so I had planned to come home, change clothes, drive to a semi-local paved trail and do my long run for the week - 8 miles. It would have been my longest run ever. Well, last week we had snow and they let schools out early when we were doing the screenings at one of the high schools. We didn't get the last group of kids done, so the lady in charge of getting them done wanted to know if I cared if we went and got those done today, if the teacher was okay with that. Since they really needed to get done, I said yes. We had a 2 hour break in between with only a 30 minute drive, so we went the a local IHOP for lunch. Wouldn't you know that today is National Pancake Day, so you got a free short stack of pancakes with anything else you ordered. I got a hamburger and fries, which was really good. I intended to only eat a couple of bites of the pancakes, but they were sooooo goood. I wound up eating the entire plate!

I did come home and run 3.5 miles on the treadmill - too late for outside or driving to my planned run. I entered everything into MFP. With the exercise, I'm only 49 calories over my goal. Assuming I don't eat anything else, it won't be a horrible day.

I agree with @RunsOnEspresso on both protein and slowing down. You might also give the Couch to 5k or Couch to 10k programs to get going again as they tend to build up slowly.

You should be fine with what you are eating but you might also try a bit more carbs shortly (20-30mins) before you head out to run. Maybe a banana?

I also agree with @RunsOnEspresso and @shanaber. I also used Couch to 5K back in 2013 and have been running since! Seems weird to have quads hurt while running -- I've not heard of that. I have them hurt sometimes after tons of cycling, but never running.

Today I came home early and I am staying home tomorrow. I don't normally believe in staying home for a cold but since it's Ash Wed tomorrow and I'm at a Catholic school we have super-long mass and my classes would be really short anyway. So, I am taking the rest day. I guess the cold works out well with the timing of the shots in my feet. I do not feel like regular food so I've eaten very unhealthy today. Breakfast was normal. Then a chocolate chip cookie and a couple triscuits for lunch. Fried rice for dinner. And ice cream as a snack. I moved to my daughter's bed (which is what I do when I'm sick, because I tend to cough a lot with this type of thing).

It is supposedly going to get really cold on Saturday so I am probably not going to ride. Last Saturday 46 degrees was miserable. So maybe my first run after the shots will be then.

Funny story... I use Spotify for music and podcasts. So does my daughter. Yesterday I got a message from Spotify that I am one of the top 1% of Taylor Swift listeners. I was telling my daughter about it and said "I'm probably the only grandmother who got this message". Then she replies back that she got a message that she is one of the top 1% of Beatles listeners!!! OMG we were cracking up. She's 26, I'm 58, and the world is backwards here. She says she listens to Taylor all the time too. The funny thing is when she went to school in NYC, we would see broadway plays when I visited her because her student id got us half price tickets. Her favorite was Jersey Boys. I liked it too, but she loved the music even more than me!

Thanks! And thanks, @Camaramandy648 and @shanaber and @ddmom0811 ! I'll take out one of the two days in a row I run to make it three instead of four days a week and maybe save the toast for right beforehand. I like the minimal running shoes, the barefoot kind, but I've got a newer pair stashed at work I could try...

I aim for over 100g a day of protein, and I try to get closer to 130-140

@ddmom0811 the training plan is like couch to 5k/10k, only it monitors my pace so I'm challenged enough.

Test went fine. Thanks for the well wishes. I kinda goofed this one. I got in my head. I made and 82 or 87, I merely looked at it for a second and dismissed it because it wasn't over 90. After statically analyzing the exam adjustments were made and I have a 90.3. I talked myself down. Next exam is Monday (different class obviously), I'm determined to do better.

    Food.
I stuck to my goals today. I had to ask myself twice today if I just made a goal and had absolutely no intention of sticking to it or what? I made soup for dinner, had a Chick-fil-A wrap for lunch which is close enough to a salad. No soda. But 1 red bull.

Tomorrow is my MRI and steroid shot. I just need to resist schlotzsky's and have Panera or nothing. One day closer to figuring out the plan, er next step. Er... Uh not "step" per se. (It was funny in my tired stupor).

I had an additional thought on the quads, how's the magnesium and hydration? Mine never burned from running or if they did something else hurt worse and I couldn't tell. My simplist guess is seconding the added rest day, maybe even run slow intervals, and toy with a few more calories, pre run.

Oh I also like the shoe suggestion. Running surface?

I may see what Dr Jordan metzle says about it later when lucid.

One thought turns in to 20... If you are at a calorie deficit, it's probably recovery, or lack of. Add rest and a few calories (fruit, not Ben and Jerry's. Been there.).

@CupcakeCrusoe are you running a lot of hills? Hills can make your quads burn. If you aren’t running hills then quads burning is sometimes a sign of overstriding, throwing your feet out in front of you and “pulling” yourself forward rather than pushing off to the back. If you are trying to increase your speed beyond what feels natural right now, that seems even more likely to be the issue. Try shortening your stride, focus on pushing off instead of letting your feet reach in front of you, and quicken your cadence. See if it helps!

Oh yah my half marathon that was downhill for the first 2 miles killed my quads!

I heard once that food eaten outside of your home zip code doesn't count... I'm trying to rationalize schlotzsky's.

I have a cat that stress eats. I don't know how a cat can be stressed but she does it. Maybe I'll share my schlotzsky's with her despite the reminder I have on the fridge not to give her ppl food.

Done with MR arthrogram. It was surprisingly tolerable. Waiting on a disk. And trying to thwart the lunch temptation. Oh who are we kidding, I'll probably eat it.

@7lenny7 glad to see you back. I don't blame you for spending the time with the boy. My dd told me last night she's going to California in May, after this semester and may not be back (boyfriend). I'm happy for her, but sheesh how I am gonna miss her 😭

@7lenny7 - haha! I'm surprised you saw that note about your shoes. I just remember laughing at your tales of buying and hiding shoes! Cracked me up. You will get the weight down. You seem to drop so quickly!

I'm back at work today but not 100%. I stayed away from my students during my 3 classes and only had to teach during one period (the other two they are working on projects that are multi-day). Yesterday my teeth were hurting (no invisalign yet!) but then when I looked it up, it seems I could have an ear infection. Sigh. I'll see how it does this afternoon because I took advil when I woke up so they don't hurt anymore.

It's supposed to get really cold here this weekend (well, cold for FL, and cold for biking), but it will be great running weather. Hopefully I'm feeling like I can run.

I have not felt like eating at all the last two days (other than junk!). But I didn't eat much of that either. No appetite -- maybe because I've not done my usual exercise. So I was down a pound but still above where I like.

Hey @7lenny7 it is good to have you back here again too! Do you have any new recipes to share? Also not sure I could have passed up those mini cinnamon rolls, Great job!

@elise4270 - I can relate to missing your DD! It is hard having them so far away. For me it is better now that mine is at least in the same time zone. There are days though when the missing is just overwhelming. We text a lot and have calls, admittedly not as frequent as I would like and she sends pictures of fun things she is doing and calls to share what she is excited or upset about. Do you think your dd will continue her coursework in CA? There are quite a few Community Colleges that aren't too expensive as well as the regular universities.
Glad the arthrogram was not too bad. What happened with Schlotzsky's?

@ddmom0811 - I have teeth pain whenever I have a cold or allergies. Heck they sometimes hurt just when the pressure outside changes. It is all because of sinus issues. This last time I really thought I might have a sinus infection because it lasted for days and days but some Clairitin cleared it up. Hope you feel better soon!

We are supposed to drastically cool down this weekend too and maybe get some rain. It has been in the mid 80's, supposed to be over 90 today, and very dry with the winds. I am looking forward to running on Saturday in something in the high 50's!

@shanaber I do, in fact, have a new recipe to share and it is phenomenal! Curried roasted carrots. The first couple of times I made these on my new smoker (Big Green Egg...I'm in love!) and I've made them in the oven as well. They are incredible!! Even if you don't liked cooked carrots you should at least try these. My daughter is hooked on them and when I visited her last weekend she made a batch while I helped her with her taxes.

    https://www.onceuponachef.com/recipes/curried-roasted-carrots.html

    Here's mine:
    xc5mc3dshvul.jpg

I don't recall if I mentioned before but I bought a Big Green Egg...one of those ceramic cookers. It's amazing. I have an old metal offset smoker I used maybe three times per year but I have to babysit it to keep the temps steady. I found this used and though it's expensive, it's super easy to use as either a grill, smoker, or oven. I've cooked chickens, turkey, ribs, salmon, steaks, smoked cheese, and my favorite, wood-fired pizza! It was the pizza cooking capability that sold me on it.

Missing our kids. It's amazing, but not surprising, how much that sucks. We lose our youngest this fall when he goes to college, but we might get middle kid back. He's in his senior year in college and told us last night that he's flying back Sunday for a job interview Monday. He already turned down a job offer from this company once because it was in Chicago but now they interviewing him for a job in St. Paul, about 25 minutes away from us!!! So stoked!! I pray he'll get this job.

I love our smoker. It isn't like yours but it makes fabulous ribs and try-tip, oh and burnt ends, yum!

I think dd will stick with school, we haven’t discussed it. I did have schlotzskys but ate only half of a Med caprese at 390 calories and just popcorn in the evening.

    Today’s food
Stuck with it, Salad from subway
    Dinner will be leftover soup.

@ddmom0811 is it possible you clinch your teeth in your sleep? Mine hurt with soy or peanuts, like @shanaber said, with sinus pressure. Even when the pressure changes outside or if it windy, which it is this week. Thankful for pseudoephedrine and singular. Lots of brush and grass fires too here.

It's going to be cold here this weekend too...well on Saturday. Back into the 50°Fs on Sunday. Snow tonight and tomorrow. This winter has been so crazy weather wise. More of a roller coaster than usual.

    zr183089bygm.jpg

DH brought home half of a cake last night, I'm going to give it to the dogs today (assuming it's not chocolate, I think it's carrot).

I'm home today so I'll have to discipline myself to make a salad, I still have soups left.

    What are you eating today?
  • quilteryoyo
    quilteryoyo Posts: 6,583 Member
@Elise4270 I had an egg and cheese sandwich for breakfast, a protein bar for lunch (I was out shopping and getting my car serviced), had a piece of peanut butter toast for a snack, and had an oven baked pork chop, cubed baked potatoes, and steamed vegetables for dinner. I ran and walked a total of 4.5 miles also, so am under my calorie goal. Hope you were able to be disciplined and had a good day.

I had salt... lotsa salt ☹️ mostly at dinner.

Ate ok all day but probably not enough after my run. We had BJs for dinner and I got a salad with chicken and the chicken was so salty I couldn't eat it so I picked it all out and just ate the salad. I also got a flat bread pizza with ham and pineapple and it was ok, rather dry.

I am excited. I lost over a pound from last week and am now at my lowest in several years -143.6 pounds. My goal is 135, but I'll be happy if I can stay below 145. If interested, here is a picture of my trend over the last year - recorded the weights every Saturday.

    @quilteryoyo - awesome!!! Congrats!
@shanaber - interesting on the teeth pain, I've not had it before.
@elise4270 - Yay on your weight too!
@RunsOnEspresso - hopefully you got some runs in too with those cookies!
@7lenny7 - yay! A veggie recipe! I think -- didn't read it all. But carrots! I know it seems terrible when your kids leave but after you get used to it, it's actually really good. Believe me, we were all about our kids and I was depressed the first year the youngest went away. I did gain weight the first year the youngest went to college. But... now we love the empty nest! As long as the kids are doing okay. I think if kids were not doing well, it would not be so good. Like you, the kids came first in our house, but now it is nice to focus on us!

I didn't have much appetite for regular meals the last few days. Ate like crap, but not much of it at least! I finally was able to lift today and run a couple miles on TM. Still got some drainage but feeling much better.
