Runners that need some nutritional accountability

@Elise4270 Try to not beat yourself up too bad. That's when I get in trouble. Also, I have found that I can't really restrict myself too much, or I just give up. Maybe you need more than 2 bananas and water for lunch. Can you go to Subway and get one of their low calorie subs?
@ddmom0811 If it isn't Thanksgiving, or Christmas, it's the Super Bowl and Easter.0 -

I really wanna stress eat. All my classes are A’s, but one because we have no grade yet... so I’m feeling the pressure. What if I bomb this one? I have to just shake it off and refocus. I talked to dh about it. I realize that my self worth is defined academically. So.. I guess I embrace it and manage the work and stress. Haha! I skipped violin today because I was a bit rattled with the pressure of the upcoming exam and the amount of work.
Ohh it got cold here. My rod leg does not like the cold. What a funny experience.1 -
@Elise4270 Congratulations on your class grades! I'm sure that you did great on the other one too! Good luck with curbing the stress eating. I tend to do that too.1
-
@elise4270 - interesting that you realize your self worth is academically. I teach a lot of students like that. Some of the pressure comes from pushy parents, but many times it is the kids themselves. No particular advice on that, it is just good that you realize it, and that you realize you want to stress eat. Are you able to walk without much pain? You may remember from about 5 years ago, that I started my fitness journey by walking and that relieves stress too!
I was feeling very sore yesterday in my legs which is unusual for me, even with all the exercise I do. So decided I should not lift last night. I could have lifted upper body but I'm trying a new thing where instead of lifting upper one day, lower the next, repeat 2 more times in a week, I am just lifting full body 2-3 times a week. Anyway, I decided I would lift this morning but I simply could not get out of bed. I must just need sleep! I decided the soreness came from my one hour treadmill run on Saturday. It is just not the same as running outside. So I now plan to lift after work!
We went to a new Cuban place for dinner last night and they had a veggie plate (pick four items). I got salad (yay), black beans, white rice and cuban bread. It was really good. The place was packed and somehow they lost our order it seemed. It was a place where you order at the counter and then sit w/number on your table. We waited, waited, waited. One waitress said "I'll check on it", but never came back. Finally I realized that I man who had come in at least 20-25 minutes after we had ordered got his food! I went up to the counter to ask what was going on and I guess they really did lose the order. They brought the food in about 1 minute and gave us a refund. The thing was we both got veggie plates so all they had to do was scoop it out! Most everyone else had fancy meat, chicken or whatever. I was so hungry by the time it got there the hunger was passing! You know that feeling? But I still ate most of it!
Hope everyone has a great2 -
Thanks for the support @quilteryoyo and @ddmom0811. I love Cuban food! Mmmm. I use to have it once a year when we traveled to the Lawton run.
I keep getting headaches an I’m sure they are associated with reading. Anyone know if it gets better? Dh thinks I need glasses to read, but I don’t. I just need distance correction.
Self worth.
I think I am just competitive. I want top 5 in everything. I was a terrible student as a kid. My mother never expected me to excel in school, I was often in remedial classes. So I’m not sure where I developed this. Could stem from being off work and seemingly useless.
Re Walking. I walked Sunday. It's hard but I do enjoy it. It's cold and wet today, maybe Friday I can get out. I have a day or two that I think I'm doing good, then several where the couch is as far as I wanna go. My knee is the greatest complainer currently.1 -
I don't think I have ever had Cuban food. It sounds delicious though.
@elise4270 - I get headaches when my eyes get tired. Initially it was from reading the computer screen and going back and forth to reading printed pages for work but I realized it was anytime I was reading anything for a long period. The biggest thing he told me was to make sure I looked away (out the window, across the room) every so many minutes to give my eyes a break.
Also could you do some yoga to relieve the stress? I am thinking some really simple, gentle poses just to take your mind off school and tests and all of that. I read a really interesting article about running and being mindful and letting everything go out of your head and they compared doing yoga to get a similar affect. Of course I cannot find the article again.1 -
I just discovered something delicious but could be very dangerous! Perfect Bar has come out with Perfect Snacks. Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter cups sprinkled with sea salt! SO good! I was going to have 1 (half a serving) but ended up eating both after my run!2
-
I don't do this so I can't speak if it works but I've read about it a lot of places. It's the 20-20-20 rule. Maybe it will help with the headaches.
If you find yourself gazing at screens all day, your eye doctor may have mentioned this rule to you. Basically, every 20 minutes spent using a screen, you should try to look away at something that is 20 feet away from you for a total of 20 seconds.
https://www.healthline.com/health/eye-health/20-20-20-rule#symptoms
3 -
@shanaber - yum! That does sound dangerous. I bought some Unreal PB cups and that are delicious also. They are made with dark chocolate, so supposedly (according to the marking from the dark chocolate industry) they are healthier than Reeces.
@RunsOnEspresso - thanks for sharing the eye article. I'm going to
Had my summer chili last night with some more manchego cheese. I brought the rest of the cheese to school today to share with my friend who has never had it. Ate ice cream but a reasonable serving. More than the 1/2 cup "serving", which is an amount I probably ate as a 2 year old. Meeting a friend tonight and she picked the place. Mostly bar food, so glad I ran 5 this morning.

Well I think I have the scale going horizontal. DH phones and asks about dinner. I explained I'm out of calories and all I do is sit and I need nothing. He gets a little flustered over it as if I'm saying he can't eat. I don't get it.
It snowed yesterday and early today but today would have been nice enough for a walk. I feel like I really need on, sitting around so much. Maybe Saturday if it's nice.
Food
Yes! Soup and an avocado
Chicken from a Chick-fil-A sandwich dh brought home. I wasn't even hungry.
Hopefully this is it for the day. I suspect there is sabotage in the kitchen.1 -
Well I have been doing ok with the right foods I am just falling back into that not eating enough habit. My run today was sucky, I had no energy and I just feel tired. I can make excuses like that I am still recovering from the HM but when I looked at my food log I have eaten less than 600 calories and it is already 4pm. I put off eating breakfast because I don't want to eat too much before I run then I put off getting out for a run until 11. By the time I get home and shower it is too late for lunch and I am not very hungry anyways. I do have a post run snack but it is not like having a meal. Monday and Tuesday I did better and felt better. I need to do that every.single.day!
Also realized not everyone here may be familiar with Perfect bars - you can read about them here
And about the peanut butter cups here
I like to buy the mini bars (100 calories each) at Costco and occasionally the bigger bars and now the PB cups at Whole Foods1 -
It’s funny how some of us are more sensitive skipping meals. I usually don’t eat before 2pm and am fine, but I’m not running either. That might be why I can get away with it.
Food!
Coffee, cream
Yes! Butternut squash apple soup with an avocado
Steroid shot this AM in the shoulder. Fingers crossed it does the trick. I do have a bone spur, prob from all that time on crutches... I told them it was from too much drive thru fast food.2 -
How is everyone doing? It has been so quiet over here. @elise4270 - I hope the shot helped with your shoulder!
I am struggling to eat enough again. Over the weekend I just wasn't hungry (took 2 rest days) and my run today reflected it. I had no energy but even after I got home I still wasn't hungry. We got Panera and I did eat my salad for dinner and had a piece of the sourdough bread when I got home from agility class.
Tomorrow I will get to TJ's and get some lunch items. I am not sure what but I need some healthy, easy go to things. Maybe for a sandwich, or salads but something else too. I am open to any ideas here.1 -
Thanks for the thoughts. The shoulder isn’t much better yet, but it’s only been 3 days and I’m hopeful it’ll help.
I sure wish we had Panera. I’m of no use to suggest healthy food. My go to is tostadas. We made a chicken salad for a while with fage Greek yogurt and apple, from canned chicken. It was good and quick. I can’t do sandwiches unless it’s real meat, so.. maybe rubens and soup or salads. Not exactly healthy, but better than burgers or pizza. I know you and your dh are on different pages with food.
Exam today and I’m struggling to wake up or get in the zone. My stomach is already awake though. Hope the brain follows.
Yesterday I did better with food. I took a frozen cauliflower cheese with me and had that for lunch, no McDonald’s or even subway. Today? Exam likely means McDonald’s. Perhaps I can rethink it between now and then. Be nice if I have time for an egg McMuffin this am. But I doubt it, if we are late, we’re locked out. Can’t afford a zero on an exam, so I could get a corn dog at the gas station, which sounds horrible this morning! Hey progress! No promises though.
Here’s to your health!1 -
I did my weigh on, measurements on Sunday and wasn't happy with it. So therefore I didn't take my progress pics. Then I sat on my butt all day. Then yesterday I just didn't want to run because it was cold and super windy.2
-
So this morning I got out all the papers from the nutritionist and reaffirmed/adjusted my settings in MFP for calories and macros. Then I went into the food diary and started entering what I thought would be my snacks and meals today. It was kind of an eye opener in terms of what I normally would eat and where I really needed to be. So instead of just my usual yogurt and granola I added a piece of toast with honey. My snacks weren't too bad but I still need to add in a post workout snack and also lunch. Lunch seems to be a really difficult meal for me. Guess that is why I used to skip so much, much easier than trying to figure something out for it.
This afternoon I am going to the new gym, get a tour and find out about their classes so I can go to one tomorrow. Not sure what but I am hoping for maybe a yoga class.
I am hitting TJs after the gym tour and picking up things for making my spaghetti sauce. We are going away for the weekend and taking the spaghetti dinner fixings with us to have at the hotel rather than fighting all the Valentines Day people.
@RunsOnEspresso - we have really bad wind yesterday afternoon and today too but it is warming up. I am hoping the winds are gone tomorrow!
@Elise4270 - I get turkey breast (not lunch meat) at Costco that I like but I get bored with it. I think I just need to have several different options. Salad one day, turkey or tuna the next, etc... The chicken salad sound interesting. I have never much cared for them because of the mayo but maybe it would be good with the Greek yogurt. Good luck on the exam - not that you need it!1 -
@Elise4270 Hope the exam went well.
I'm also no help with healthy food choices. I guess that's why we are on this thread. Huh? Anyway, I will buy a rotisserie chicken every once in a while and use it for different meals for a week, since it's just me. I may have a sandwich, chicken with veggies one day, stir fry one day, etc. It seems to work for me when I get the chance to do it.
I just got back from a FL trip. No exercise. Lots of eating. I really don't want to get on the scale in the morning, but I will, just to see how bad the damage is.1 -
@quilteryoyo - before I became a vegetarian I did the same thing with rotisserie chickens. Now I buy one every other week for my dog! I cut it up and put it in little baggies and freeze it. He gets some on top of his dinner. I also make my husband one little bag because he likes to snack on it.
Hope FL was fun and if you gained, you know it will come off.
@elise4270 - hope exam went well! But we all know it did! Do you have Chick Fil-A? If so do you like it? I used to eat that - and I didn't get the grilled sandwiches, just went for the regular sandwich. I would try to eat just 3/4 of it, which was usually doable unless I had exercised a lot.
@RunsOnEspresso - sorry about the # on the scale. Mine is also a little up. Every morning I'm excited to get on the scale but it's stayed the same all week!
@shanaber - hope you find some good classes! My daughter told me she tried a rowing class in Portland and loved it. There is a rowing studio right by my school and I may give it a try. I need another shot in my foot and when that happens I can't run for a week. Not sure if I can row though... It took me a moment to figure out what TJs was! There are two in Orlando but not convenient at all for me. We were supposed to get a Luckys and it was almost done when they announced it wasn't going to open!
@elise4270 - has me itching to take classes! Right now I am reviewing Java programming language (which I've taught for 20 years and used before that), and I am going to take a certification test. Most of it I know really well but there are some things I don't use much that I'm reviewing. It's very fun for me to study for it! Just like grading the AP exams every year is fun.
I made my crockpot 10 layer meal this weekend. This time instead of with crumbles I used Beyond Beef. Wow, it is good! Not sure if it very healthy from what I'm reading about Beyond Beef.
2 -
@shanaber I like the fage in it. I don’t like stuff like that that makes me “see” bacteria swImming about. I liked it for sandwiches or even crackers. I might look into the turkey breast. I don’t know why I didn’t think about that as a choice. I am really enjoying cutting back on the meat right now.
@RunsOnEspresso I got out of the shower last night and just “oof” ya, it not pms weight these last few months... er uh.. 10 months? Hang in there. I’d (not really) have done the pics/measurements, because it might be an occasion that you look back and wonder why the heck you thought what you did. I thinking I’ll go on a coffee diet. Since Hawaii and adding the cream to my coffee it doesn’t always upset my guts. Yay! only sort-of lactose intolerant now!
Foods
I ate tostadas again (giant nachos). Subway salad for lunch. And 2 noosa’s when I came home. I went to McDonald’s for lunch, but subway is next door, and I had a “c’mon” moment. Complain but just keep doing the same thing...
@ddmom0811 Haha! I’m glad you are trying to enjoy learning or even brushing up! I like it as long as I’m “good” at it and it doesn’t feel like work. Doesn’t everyone? I looked at the beyond beef. I think it had soy so I haven’t tried it, but nice there is a mainstream product now. Our Burger King has it, even if it isn’t super healthy it’s baby steps in the right direction.
@quilteryoyo How was the trip? Did you eat any Cuban food? What was the best meal you had?
Exam. I was struggling through the afternoon violin lesson and fell asleep on the couch once home, I had been up since 415, (thanks baby boogie buggie bear. Turd is just too cute and so spoiled). I don’t know if they’ll post the breakdown of the class grades, but I think I did well enough with an 87.5. I think I heard 2 that scored higher, 88 and 92. Dh gave me a frown and a “really? With all that studying? That’s it?”. So, I told him about some of the types of questions. He couldn’t answer it either. One I just failed to read the response carefully and inserted a word, what I expected it to say.1 -
After testing my doctor bumped my thyroid meds up a notch, hopefully it will be a bit easier to keep from gaining. I’ve been gradually edging upwards, while still eating and working out about the same according to my logging.
I feel the need to vent about how stupid the whole healthcare process is but right now I’m too traumatized. And also wondering if I should report my doc’s clinic for Medicaid fraud. I know for sure they are charging 5k for a 90 day supply of “modified” metformin, when the generic is a 4 dollar drug, and when I mentioned I was private pay and needed the generic they offered to give me the modified for free if I would just please fill it at their attached pharmacy. I said no thank you. Please give me what I had before, I don’t need and my doctor did not prescribe modified, they changed the prescription stealthily and hoped no one would notice. And they got extremely frosty with me for not helping them steal from the government. I looked it up and this is an elaborate scheme involving kickbacks and price fixing and coupons from the drug company, which is being investigated under RICO right now. Ugh. Just leave me out of it please.
Anyway they never did get me the right drug, after three days of trying to get the right thing, I’m currently taking unbuffered whereas I asked for what I was taking before which is buffered and extended release. It doesn’t seem to bother me but why is it so hard to just get them to do what they should in a timely fashion? It’s like they try to be wrong. My husband was talking about calling the local TV news “fix your problem” crew and going down there to shake things up if they didn’t get their stuff together and stop jerking us and our actual chosen pharmacy around. I’m not normally a vengeful person but it was half past punching somebody time. I’m an educated, determined person, I can only imagine what a confused older person goes through trying to deal with this.1 -
@rheddmobile You should probably report them. I had an issue with an eye doctor years ago. He told me I had increased pressure in one of my eyes and gave me an elaborate field of vision test every time I went in so that my insurance would pay for it all. I finally asked him what the pressure was and he wouldn't tell me. I promptly changed doctors and there is NO pressure increase. I did not report him, but have wished I had many times.
My trip was great. Got to see all of my Florida family - that includes 2 step-children, 5 grand children, 4 great grandchildren, and my husband's ex-wife and spouse. My husband has been deceased for nearly 14 years, so I know that I am blessed to still be a part of their lives. And, yes, his ex and I are really good friends. There are 4 more great grandchildren due this summer. The oldest granddaughter is pregnant with triplets and her brother's wife is also pregnant.
I stay with my step-daughter, who has the two youngest granddaughters, when I am there. They got a new puppy for Christmas, so that was fun. Was able to get them outside for all of Sunday afternoon. That never happens!
As far as food goes, we usually just eat party food and Dina cooks. She makes the best chicken Alfredo, so that was my favorite meal. I did gain nearly 5 pounds, but I know some of that will come off quickly, if I control what I eat this week.
I'll try to post a couple of pictures this evening. Gotta get ready for work. Subbing in the one year old class today. Taking my break at 10 to go play tennis for a couple of hours.1 -
@rheddmobile I'd report it. They need to be held accountable. Any chance you can get with the/a pharmacy and get your script straightened out?0
-
Yeah @rheddmobile, I'm in the report it camp too. I think you can do it anonymously. I have never had anything like that happen. Mostly the pharmacy wants to give me the generic thyroid medication even when the doctor writes for the non-generic.0
-
US has too many issues with health care, insurance and pharmacy. It's all about profit and not actually about getting people healthy.
I would report it as well. Like you said, you are able to advocate for yourself but so many people are not for various reasons.0 -
How did your food choices go today?
Mine?
Tomato soup that had 510 calories. Wow, I wouldn’t have eaten that if I took a second to look at the label. It was good with my grilled Swiss cheese sandwich on Dave’s bread. Then the rest if the cheese slices for a snack.
Dh is putting a cauliflower pizza in.
I’m definitely over my calorie goal for the day.
Dd made a 100 today on her math exam. So nice to see since she had had so much anxiety over math this semester!2 -
@elise4270 - wow that is a lot of calories for tomato soup! I have been enjoying grilled cheese sandwiches too. We had with split pea soup the other night. It is great that your dd is doing so well in school! Definitely a boost for her confidence I am sure!
I have done pretty well the last couple of days. I have been pre-logging and pretty well stuck to it so I know I am getting in the calories and being within the ballpark for my macros. Still hoping it will help my running. Again today I just had no energy and my legs just felt exhausted, even after I got home. Honestly it felt like I had run 15 miles and not 5, my legs were even shaking. I am pretty sore now from strength training yesterday but mostly core and upper body, of course we did reverse lunges and some things that required glutes, etc. for stabilization but nothing that should have toasted my legs. I will try my spadework run tomorrow and see how it goes. Maybe intervals instead of a tempo run though.
Oh and the other day I did drive to that other gym. It took me forever to get there, nearly an hour and then when I got there I drove through the parking lot and decided I didn't want to park my car there. It was a pretty rough area, nice looking gym but lots of groups of guys just hanging out in the parking lot. Made me very uncomfortable and I don't think I want to drive all the way there to take a yoga or Zumba class. I will just wait for the gym by me to open.2 -
@shanaber yikes! An hour away? We have access as students to the on campus gym, a few of my classmates go in the AM, I would like to join them. But with the shoulder and leg/hip I think it’d be frustrated. Maybe the shoulder will get better and I can join them later. There’s even racquet ball courts and a pool. And tennis, but not in the gym obviously. I’m reinforcing a stereotype as an “older” adult, lame.
Food today?
Wiggle bear. That fart wanted me up at 445. Yes, I got up... still wishing he had a littermate to keep him occupied. I think I’m set on another subway salad with extra chicken, which still seems to be a meager portion. The salads are giant and I feel like I’m getting a weeks worth of veggies. I really like the frozen 3-4$ vegan meals to take for lunch, but I think dd got the last one. Looks like I’m getting back on track. About time too. I hope the sleep deprivation doesn’t get me today. He also kept me from falling asleep until midnight. So... ugh. Tired.
Retail therapy.
I bought an expensive “hoodie”. I freeze outside (too/from class). And I got an email solicitation for a sale. So I looked. The coat is Outdoor Adventure and is marketed for skiing, but it’s a thin coat. I feel like it’ll be too warm, but... I’m tired of layering and the bulky jacket, which is warm, it’s just puffy and feels confining. I “saved” about 100 bucks on it. Haha! Next week it’ll be 80 I’m sure.
Silly question.
I was gathering my stuff last night and noted that I’m a little attached to my pens and pencils. I wanted to change out a highlighter color for one class, in a particular bag, and couldn’t find dd’s highlighters. I have a set but didn’t want to separate mine which I use when organizing and studying, not in class. I also found 4 pencils in said bag, I set a limit of 2 because I’ll have 18 if you let me... so odd. Maybe I’m just a nerd and need a pocket protector. I’m trying to unattached from stuff. Maybe I’ll just force myself to separate my highlighter set, instead of buying another one sine dd and I can’t find all of hers. Which have a pen on one end and is useful... (justification). Do you find you have any behaviors that are neurotic? And I can hardly stand that behavior is not spelt behaviour!2 -
@Elise4270 Yeah for your DD's 100. That's fantastic. Maybe her anxiety will lessen up a little with this success.
My food yesterday was odd. I had my normal breakfast, one piece of toast and egg and some cheese, then went to work. I worked for 2 hours and left for a scheduled tennis match - so great that being a sub they work around my schedule. During tennis I ate a protein bar. I went back to work without eating anything and was starving by 3. The other teacher in the class had a protein bar she gave me. So I ate that. When I got home, I had a bowl of cereal with strawberries. I was still hungry and had plenty of calories left, so ate popcorn during Jeopardy. I also snacked on almonds later.
Today, I'm not working so will have a late breakfast and then probably have an oven baked pork chop, baked cubed potatoes, and roasted veggies for dinner around 3:30 or 4. I'm sure there will be some snacks in there somewhere.
I had to shake my head at your "neurotic pen/pencil" behavior @Elise4270. I call myself a pen hoarder. I don't know why either. But, I will always take the pens in the hotel rooms and any other place that seems to have them as advertisements - like the vets office. I have a drawer full! I love office supplies. I can spend an entire day in Staples just looking around to see what they have. I may have missed my calling. Maybe I should have been an office manager. I also love cooking utensils. I can spend a day in stores that sale cookware too. If you have to have a weird behavior, I guess those aren't too bad.
I tried to upload some pictures from FL, but I have internet over my phone line and it is being sporadic and really slow this morning. They are supposed to be working on the line today. I'll try again later today, if they get it fixed.

OMG on the pens and pencils! I tend to have favorites and when I was in elementary school kept one or two that I always used until they were sharpened down to nothing. In college it was pens. I did all my homework (yes math major) in pen and it had to be just certain pens.
I have to stay out of that section at target or I will buy things I don't need. I bought myself a set of 16 (2 were 'extra' making it totally worth it 😊) different colored pens. I love them! For my birthday dd bought me a set of 72 Prismacolor colored pencils. I had a set of 24 already but the new set is SO nice! I did pass that gene onto her - when she was in school she literally knew the Office Depot store layout better than the people that worked there. When I was cleaning things out I found that we had multiple containers of fun pens and pencils that I donated to a children's organization. The crazy in me wanted to go through them and make sure there was none I wanted to keep but I just took the whole thing to be donated 🤣
@elise4270 - I think you need to buy a new set of highlighters that can be split up and used for class and keep the other one for studying so you always have what you need for that. Both you and dd can share the split set. Totally being an enabler here!
That gym is not 'far' in distance away, only about 6 miles. You have to go through the Disney resort area as well as the convention center and the traffic is just insane. There really isn't another good way to get there.
I have done really well with my food so far. Tomorrow we are heading up the coast for a few days so hopefully I can stick with it. Going out for a short run and hopefully it will be better than yesterday's!2 -
Haha! You guys are awesome!!!
@quilteryoyo i take the pen at the docs office, it is designed for my planner. I plan on grabbing another next week. DH has too many terrible promo pens. I chuck them.
I have a dresser in the closet of the cat office where I collect supplies. Unless it my fav of course.1
