Well today is at least kinda better than yesterday -

My boss brought breakfast burritos for everyone this morning so that is 447 calories + I ate a fourth of another one, so that's like... 500 calories. + I had a Reese's Christmas Tree.

I'm really full as of right now, so I'm hoping I will stay full and not give into the popcorn they made fresh this morning. I have a banana and an avacado on my desk for later. We also have apples and peanut butter in the kitchen, which would be another great option for lunch.

I also ordered Kefir in my grocery order. It's strawberry flavored. Really no idea what I'm doing - I hope I like it - just really have to get back on track!

I know you were all running out to buy the ingredients for the coconut crusted tofu, so let me head you off before you make your purchases! I don't think it is worth it.
Maybe it would be better fried in oil, as the recipe called for, but in the air fryer, it was not nearly as good as I remembered from the restaurant in Portland. DH thought it was really good though. IDK lately it seems like he likes whatever I make and I don't! I think I can make some adjustments to it for next time (if there is a next time).

Today has been pretty good so far. (it's only 7pm though and you know the late night goes!) I've been having a cup of hot chocolate (just one of the mixes) that is around 150 calories the last 2 nights and it has been helpful in not snacking.

I had a five mile run in the morning and surprisingly not starving all day. I've been SO busy at school that I haven't had time to snack which is good. Makes me worry about retiring in 4.5 years! Actually it would be June 1 of 2024 so even less than 4.5! Not that I'm counting down or anything. ;)

@ddmom0811 - hot chocolate sounds great for a late night snack. I may do that with some dark chocolate protein powder and some Starbucks mocha powder. Also I don't think you have to worry about not being busy enough when you retire, I know my days somehow get so filled up and I am never even sure how or why that happens! 🤣

Very true @shanaber . I'm busier now that I'm retired than I was when I "worked," or at least it feels that way. I do have some part time jobs, so sometimes that really fills my days and I don't have time for the things I want/need to do. I'm working on that aspect of my life to get more balanced.

The average age a woman is in menopause is 51. I’m not clear if that begins menopause or is officially menopausal. I’m 49, 8 months and 23 days. (Thereabouts). Surely this has got to stop soon. 2 periods in a month, constant spotting or nothing for 4 months? Weight is just as stupid and unpredictable.

Ok. Now we can move on... food!
Eh, travel day I think I may do schlotzskys but may have a moment of responsibility and do Panera.

I was wondering how heating up Fairlife Chocolate milk would taste. I have that after a run sometimes cold and love it. Probably somewhat more unprocessed than the little packet of hot chocolate mix.
Down a pound today -- so 4 pounds since Monday.

Ran 4.7 miles this morning and hope to lift after school.

@elise4270 - yeah, menopause is not so fun. I had an endometrial ablation in 2007 when I was 46 and never had a period since. They said I might get them back in a few years, but I never did. But then I really couldn't tell when I hit menopause. I've had horrific hot flashes for years. They will go away for a couple months and then come right back. Hang in there. Go Panera!

@Elise4270 I took the birth control pill forever to regulate my periods. My mom went through menopause really early, so I kept asking my doctor, not a gynecologist, if I stopped the pill would I stop my period. He kept telling me "no," but I just had a feeling he was wrong. So, a year after my husband died, I just quit taking the pill and never had another period. I was 48. I'm now 60 and still have the occasional hot flash, but not as bad as they used to be. Hopefully it will stop soon. I'm really, really glad I don't have mine anymore.

@ddmom0811 Down 4 pounds since Monday?! WTG!

I’m not looking forward to hot flashes. I had an episode maybe a year ago where I was having night sweats and no cycle, but it seems to have just been a preview. Currently I freeze the week before and few days of a period. It’s kind of nice to have the warning I guess.

    Food
Ate a schlotzskys sandwich, yum. I tried to eat only half of it since I was driving and half was enough. But the piggy in me had to have the other half 30 miles later. I tried. Kind of. Dh could have had that half and I just was a pig and ate it.

    @elise4270 - Surgeon appointment today?
I started menopause in my mid 50's I think. I didn't really have regular periods for many years and then they stopped altogether. I used to and still occasionally have night sweats that I took black cohosh for. I think it also helped alleviate the hot flashes. I got the black cohosh from an apothecary in Switzerland and couldn't get it here but found something similar in tablet form that worked ok. Running also seems to help.

Did pretty well eating today. The only problem I have is I tend to drink too much wine when dh is gone. Just a glass more but more than I should.

No run today but went to strength training. Thinking I should get in a long run tomorrow or over the weekend. We are gone next week and then just 2 weeks until the HM. I suspect I will be walking a lot of it.

I went out with a friend last night to see a light show in LA - it was incredible. It was a little over a mile walk around the loop to see everything. They are huge fabric sculptures with lights - I have never seen anything like them before. The dragon is actually floating in the water.

Wow @shanaber those are absolutely stunning!

Yes doc today. Kim asked about it and I posted a rather long processing update in the main forum.
    Visit with doc 2;
Ok I think. We’re gonna wait and see a few months before scheduling a re-do surgery. My understanding is that the femoral angle from surgery day to now has changed. I didn’t clarify, so I’m just guessing and piecing conversation together. He said we’d go with a rod that is about an inch shorter. I asked “so the screw holes line up?” I mean couldn’t possibly rotate and put new holes next to old holes in a bone right? His reply was “no, so there’s room for bone cement”. Huh. Okay. Didn’t ask anything else. So I think that’s to keep in at the angle it is set. There was talk of a PAO (peri acetabular osteotomy), which would be way cool, but then he decided we can’t because the femur needs to be done, first? Or no PAO? Think no PAO is where we left that. Left hip— He remembered the nerve impingement. Thinks that side could also be de-rotated a bit to relieve the strain. (Logging that nugget away as I suspect if I ever get to add much activity it’ll be a pain in the rear constantly).

Anyway, I’m back to surgeon doc 1 in feb for an update (even thought doc2 was going to go talk to him, I’m supposed to check in. He does my disability paperwork so... ok, and he’s managing my care) and then to surgery doc 2 in March for decision and scheduling. Agreed that sx in May is ideal if needed. Give my hip time to heal from September FAI sx and re-strengthen. But. Perhaps I’ll be in a livable situation and not need to do any sx. From what I gather, my running days are done. Return to function is what we’re hoping. Although, I’m not opposed to being one of those stories where “my doc said I’d never run again”.

He thought I could try to get out on my bike. But wasn’t keen on anyone ever riding their bike outdoors. He’s a trauma surgeon and reciently lost a co-worker to a fatal mtn bike accident. He uses a zwift trainer for his biking. Eh, I really like being outside and minimal 300 USD and a 14USD/monthly fee. I don’t have a surgeons salary. And my books and supplies this semester were over 1000. Dh would get me the trainer... but someone has to be occasionally responsible with the money. Okayed some walking, but watch the knee alignment. (Which can be fixed in the next sx).

@shanaber Wow! That light show is amazing!

I'm trying out my dehydrator today. Starting with an apple and a banana. My hope is that I will like them for a snack and can take them with me when I drive to FL instead of buying a bunch of junk - or packaged dried fruit which is really pretty expensive for what you get.

@Elise4270 - which one of the doctors is a runner? I am hoping you are one of those 'my doc said I’d never run again' stories too! I guess like anything else it is one step at a time getting pain free and fully functioning first and then adding in more activity.

@quilteryoyo - have fun with the dehydrator. The key is getting the fruits sliced really thin otherwise they take forever to dry or don't dry through. Also for variety you can sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on the apples.

The trauma surgeon is a runner, cyclist, swimmer. Doc 2. I think doc 1 is active, maybe a runner but I haven't talked to him about running other than return to running plans.

    quilteryoyo Posts: 6,583 Member
@shanaber I thought about sprinkling some cinnamon on them, but didn't this time. I bought a slicer so I could slice them thin, but I quartered them so I could core them first and that made it a little difficult to hold with the slicer guard. Still, it worked out pretty good. They've been "cooking" for about 2 hours now.

@elise4270 - My DH and I have been getting nervous about our road cycling. It is very dangerous. One friend who is an amazing cyclist got a Peloton but those things are so expensive and then there is still a monthly cost. I think it's around 2500 and then 50 a month! This friend is obsessed with the Peloton -- she's in different groups (probably like this one) and they compete against other groups. I really like riding outside too. We are starting to get more trails here and we have a really good one that is pretty empty that DH and I have gone to alone many times. That being said, our group ride is tomorrow! It doesn't seem quite as dangerous when you are with a group of 20-40 riders, but you never know. It sounds like you are at the right kind of doctor (an athlete!). I sure hope you can get back to it one of these days.

@quilteryoyo - are you coming to Orlando? I'm not particularly crazy about dried fruits. Never done it myself. Yes I was down 4 this week (actually another .5 today) but I know it's because I didn't really gain it. Yeah, I have a weird thought process about gaining/losing weight. I know that a pound is supposed to be 3500 calories. If I wake up and am 1 pound up (or 2 or 3) I know that I didn't really eat 3500-7000 extra calories! Maybe I ate 2000 more. It's the salt and just the fullness of eating too much. I also realize that I couldn't have had a deficit of 3500 calories to lose a pound. So I figure it is just the water/wine/salt/fullness in body. But, as you know, I am a little obsessed with the #'s on the scale so I want to get back in my happy range.

@shanaber -Those pics are beautiful! I've never seen anything like that either. So there was fabric around lights?
I saw on Strava that you had your last one-on-one with trainer. Are you going out on your own like I did? Are you using an app or plan of some type? As you know I switch plans every 6 months or so. I'm sure you know the form to have for most exercises now. (sorry if you already stated it here and I missed it).

The Fairlife Chocolate milk heated up on the stove for hot chocolate is delicious! I like it more than the swiss miss (or whatever brand I have) little packets. I feel like it is somewhat healthier/less processed too!

Here is a picture of me (3rd from right) at the awards banquet last month. I look like I had 3 wines, but I was on my first wine at that point! My 3 students are on the left side. So I need to look back at pics from 8 years ago and realize how far I've come because when I look at it I am way too critical of myself. I think I must have body misperception or whatever it is called.

@ddmom0811 I think you must have that misconception also. You look great! (If not a little drunk. LOL)

I am not going to Orlando, but will be in Palm Bay the beginning of February. I have family there and will be going for a granddaughter's birthday. I've been trying to find a race I can do while I'm there, so I don't totally go off the wagon. The only thing I've found near there is a 2K (YES 2K!) race at the Brevard Zoo. Not sure I feel like making the effort for that distance.

I gotta get back on track. I've been eating a lot of candy at work (I moved offices and the previous occupant had left Halloween candy in the desk). I need to get rid of it but I can't bring myself to throw it away (seems wasteful). Or because I was a member of clean plate club growing up. I've gotten better but it's so hard to waste food! Maybe my goal Monday will be to toss it.

This year I hope to lose weight and body fat so I need to be better with food and make sure I lift weights. I keep slacking in these areas. I like lifting so I don't know why it's so hard to stick to.

@RunsOnEspresso I too hate to waste food. If you can't just eat one piece of the candy, is there a break room where you can put it so that everyone in the office can help get rid of it?

@RunsOnEspresso Simple. Candy isn't food. It's junk. So junk goes in the trash.

@ddmom0811 - the picture is great. Having met you irl I know you look great! In the picture you do look like you are doing what a lot of (mostly tall) people do in pictures, scrunching down. My daughter does it too. You also look so happy and proud of those kids!

My trainer is starting a full time job on the 13th. He is going to try having small group sessions in the evening one or two times a week (no change in cost though). I joined Gold's Gym opening near my house in March so I will do the group training until then if he lasts that long doing it. I'm also planning to do some classes at the other Gold's Gym a few miles from the house until the new one opens. Oh and they have a pool too! I will be looking for workout plans so I know what exercises/lifts to do together in a session. I can use the alternate gym for free until the new one opens!

@quilteryoyo - a 2k doesn't seem worth the effort other than it might be fun running through the zoo!

@RunsOnEspresso - how about taking the candy to a common area (coffee area) so others will eat it? That way you aren't throwing it away and not eating it yourself.

Plans for today include getting out for a good run this morning and then making split pea soup in the IP. It is cold (all relative) and dh is home this evening from Seattle so it will be a good dinner.

I absolutely LOVE this, Elise! I think we should make a meme with it!

@quilteryoyo - HURRAY!!! I'm not quite there, but close!

@RunsOnEspresso - I was lucky that my parents were very young (well that part maybe wasn't so lucky!) but they never cared about finishing food on the plate. Based on the mom stories here, I bet other were the same! I had a ton of candy at home and the first day back at school I brought it the teacher's lounge at school. I checked at the end of the day it was all gone!

Did the group ride this morning and because the route changed slightly it is only 43. I wanted some more miles so added in another 4! Going to Tampa tonight to see some friends and staying over! Maybe I will get to run along the river if I don't drink too much tonight!

After all that talk yesterday about cycling being dangerous, there were 2 wrecks! I was not involved in either nor was DH. But a dear friend was. Luckily she is okay. She is amazing! She is probably 65 and rides with our group almost every week. She went over the handlebars!!! I didn't see it, I had just come off the front and was heading back (it's like peloton ride -- not the machine -- the Tour de France type thing) and heard this crash. The guy in front of her fell too. We waited about 10 mins and she said she was fine and finished the ride. He was fine too.

Then my DH was in the faster group and there was wreck with them too! Both guys were okay in that group.
But you know, you never actually know if someone is okay until later. About 4 years ago there was a minor wreck and a guy in my neighborhood went down. He thought he was fine but it turned out he had done something to his wrist. He ended up having surgery and there were complications and it took a few years to get it straightened out. He is back to riding finally.

@ddmom0811 wow! Yikes! I hate that my seemingly overly concerned surgeon has a valid view. He’s mentioned the extensive injuries he’s seen on a few visits. Makes me wonder if he himself survived something.

    @quilteryoyo whooo! For the weight!

I think cycling can be dangerous because so many things can affect you (the road conditions, other riders, cars, etc..) but there are also injuries with pretty much any kind of exercise. My doctor once told me that the primary growth area for his patient load was from cross fit! People trying to do things with poor form too fast, or even with good form too fast, just over doing it.
@ddmom0811 - I am glad your friends are all ok!

When I was at the grocery yesterday I noticed they had strawberry, unfrosted pop tarts and I used to love them (it has been years since I have even seen them in the store). I bought them and had one before my run this morning and OMG it was terrible. I am thinking now that I need to find a recipe for something similar that actually tastes good. Or maybe just toast with jam will do.

The IP soup was delicious and we have plenty for meals when we get back from our road trip. I think I will freeze the rest of the ham too so we can have it as a meal or I will make some more soup with it.

@shanaber I'm glad you didn't like the poptarts. DH bought them once and I ate 3 packages without checking the ingredients. I was so sick, I don't think I could ever bring myself to eat another. And it's taught me to check those ingredients!

    Food
    Wins:
Pre meal planning- I put chicken thighs in the IP with chili powder and cumin. I'm going to bake some sweet potato chunks or slices.
    Ate fajita meat for lunch.

    Losses:
Eh I bought squirt cheese and ate it with tiny pretzels. Haha.
I'm being lazy. I have reading assignments to do and am just watching these 600+ lb folks struggle. I think I should just skip to the last 10 minutes of the show since I just wanna see then succeed. Ya know these people eat more in a day than I do in a week. It's hard to comprehend that type of compulsion. All that food in has got to come out. So.. potty visits 10x what I am use to? I think my tp allowance is a lot. I'm just stalling on my hw assignment... And putting dem taters in .

    Go for the wins today!

ETA and I am going to make almond banana oat pumpkin spice cookies. That's all the ingredients.

@elise4270- I’ve never seen that show. It sounds awful! But to see them lose would be nice I guess. LOL never thought about the bathroom for that situation other than, how do they clean up?
Go do your HW! LOL. The cookies sound amazing!!

@shanaber - interesting on the Doctor saying the cross fit people are getting injured most. It makes sense.

Had a nice weekend but couldn’t run this am. I felt okay but we needed to get home for our dog. Pet sitter couldn’t come in the morning. I did lift though!

Yesterday at lunch one of the teachers brought all of us these HUGE cookies. He was celebrating that he is going to be a grandpa. I didn't want it and I know one other teacher didn't either (she had just shared w/me that she is starting Couch to 5K). But there were only 4 of us there and it seemed rude to just stare at it, so I ate half of it and then gave the rest away later. Usually if I have something like that it doesn't throw me off and send me spiraling. But yesterday for some reason it sort of did. I was stressed about things at work and feeling super busy and I ended up eating a little more junk. Still WAY better than I would have done in the past.

Anyway, as for recipes, I found an IP recipe that is like Pulled Pork, but it is pulled Jack Fruit. Going to make it tonight! https://www.noracooks.com/instant-pot-pulled-bbq-jackfruit/
One Mexican restaurant I go to has a jack fruit taco and it is really good. So I'll give it a try.
I am not making my own BBQ sauce though. I bought one that looked somewhat healthy.

    Back on track today!

@ddmom0811 That's a tough one. I would have probably eaten the entire thing, so good for you for only having half. I wish society could find ways to celebrate things that didn't involve food.

@quilteryoyo- I meant to say that if you will be in FL Feb 8-9 there is a really cool 5K at the Daytona Beach Speedyway. I think that's about an hour away from Palm Bay (I think that's where you said you are going). I've done the HM there 3 times and loved it. I can't seem to run more than 6 miles without foot burning so not doing it again this year. They actually have a HM relay -- you run .5 of HM and your partner runs .5 of it. It's very cool. You run around the track and then to the beach and back!

So, apparently my job on here is to try recipes and report to you what NOT to try. That jackfruit recipe -- what a disaster. Well, we haven't eaten it yet. I made it tonight and I don't think I want it tomorrow. First of all I bought 3 cans instead of two (good thing -- you end up throwing away way more than you can eat of Jack Fruit!!!)
IDK it just doesn't look like my thing and the amount it made is enough for just my DH! My job here is done, lol.

Oh well! Today was much better than yesterday. Some sugar but not nearly as much as yesterday!
I feel like I sort of have a 4 day weekend coming up. Friday is the Senior Retreat (so most of my classes will only have a couple kids in them) and then Monday is MLK! We are talking about doing a bike ride that day, so that will be nice to get an extra ride in!

We went wine tasting today and had a wonderful day until back at the hotel and Hobbes and Molly were playing and Hobbes fell off the bed onto his shoulder. it looked like a displacement then like it was ok. So for now we are assuming it is ok and he is sleeping soundly!
Too much wine and not enough real food!
Having a great time and lots of discussion!
