Runners that need some nutritional accountability

You can do it @Camaramandy648 ! I need a white board to post meals/ snacks so I don't go hunting the bad ones down and use it like a menu. But, use this forum until I get one in place.
Feel free to list plans and goal here often! Or whatever works for you!

Ummm errrr ummm.
I have my tail between my legs. Omg I've gorged myself the last three days. Just gave up caring today. Sigh. I was doing so well.
So back on the wagon as of now. Accept it, move on. Know the scales are not going to like you tomorrow but that's the starting point. It will only get better.
Damn it.
Well I'm Well fueled for my 19k run on Saturday....3 -
@elise4270 - so glad the PT is providing relief for your shoulder and neck! To me they are just magical, even if it hurts. Hey, how did you feel after your 'run' the other day?
@bearly63 - the concert is on YouTube here. You should be able to just click on the link. Or search for Andrea Bocelli Music for Hope. I have listened to it several times now - it just makes me feel better.
I never think to make Dutch Babies - I love them! Maybe this weekend.
@quilteryoyo - sometimes I just remember general areas but I know @rheddmobile is in Memphis and you are somewhere near her. @ddmom0811 is in Florida because I got to meet her there and @elise4270 is in Oklahoma not far from Dallas because I almost got to meet up with her once when I was in Dallas for work....
@Camaramandy648 - you already got this. You're making a plan and moving forward with it!
I finally made the IP chicken I have been thinking about for the last week and it was great. The rice came out sort of like a risotto and was so good. I put Italian seasonings on the chicken and used a can of chicken mushroom soup so the rice was really creamy.
Do you ever feel like everything is just so salty? I know most restaurant foods are but man I wake up in the morning with my eyes all puffy and I know it was from the salt in my dinner, even with foods I make at home like the chicken tonight. There was no added salt but I feel like I ate the salt shaker.... I checked the soup too and it only has 500mg of salt and the recipe made 4-6 servings.1 -
@shanaber I do feel everything is really salty. I try to watch my sodium intake because I retain so much water and need to keep my blood pressure down. Was the 500 mg of sodium in the soup for the entire can or per serving? There are usually 2 - 3 servings of soup in a can. When I eat out, I try to check the nutritional value and go for lower sodium items, if possible. I used to go for low calorie and then one day checked the nutrition on some of the items I loved to order out. I about died just looking at the sodium numbers. It's just crazy. Once you go low sodium, everything tastes salty. You're chicken sounds delicious. I can remember that @rheddmobile is in Memphis and @ddmom0811 is near Orlando, I think. Didn't know where @Elise4270 lived. I can remember a couple of others too. Where are you from? BTW, I am completely on the other side of the state from Memphis...almost as far as possible. I'm near Greeneville, which is half way between Knoxville and Bristol.0
-
@shanaber - yes everything is so salty! Because we are eating at home so much now (well, all the time!) when we get take out our favorite Indian or Chinese (only 1 time a week at this point), I can tell a huge difference on the scale! Haven't noticed in my eyes. But one thing with this whole stay at home that I am noticing is that my skin seems really ... IDK the word ... better? I was wearing a moisturizer, sunscreen and then a very light layer of a tinted moisturizer. Now I just wash my face and put on the moisturizer. If I run in the daylight (past around 8am) I will put on sunscreen. So I feel like my skin just looks better somehow. My hair - not so much!
@bearly63 - is your son out of quarantine yet? Forgot to say I have tall kids too! Daughter is 6'2" and son is 6'7". DIL is my height (5'7" so I am curious how tall their daughter will be - she's already off the charts like both my kids were). We still have not ordered the Peloton yet but hopefully. we will this week. There is a 5-7 week delay in delivering according to website.
@avidkeo - no need for tail between legs. We all completely understand! We understand even when we aren't in a pandemic, but now we all have those "give up" moments. One day at a time. Or one meal/snack at a time. If you eat too much or snack too much during the day, don't throw in the towel for that day. Just start over right then and there.
Thanks all for the well wishes on knee. There is no pain, thank goodness, other than a scraped knee pain, but the scraped up section of knee is huge and will take a while to heal. But there is no internal pain that I can detect! Elbow is really bruised! Wow, the older you get, the bigger the bruise! @RunsOnEspresso - yes, I can still do core work and upper body and some lower! I use FitBod app for lifting and been doing a 4 week Core program from Peloton. The latter has a lot of on the knees but I will just do something else or skip those.
I logged every single bite yesterday! I was at 2117 calories but since I did a 4 mile run that was about right for me. I know that seems high but I've always been able to eat more calories and lose/maintain. I just want to get down 4 pounds to be in my acceptable range. But I've been going up, not down. Knowing that what I ate yesterday was over 2000 calories, tells me that what I have been doing the past month was probably more like 2800. So no wonder I gained a few pounds. I feel motivated to keep logging everything and work on these 4 pounds (at least while writing this post I do!)
Our power went off at 8pm last night... just as I was trying to refrain from getting ice cream! Went out front along with the other neighbors. Several of us called power company, and they gave an estimate of 11:45pm. Nope, it was 1:30am. So no ice cream! Good, then I would have been at 2400 probably! But I got little sleep because of all that and could not get up and run so will do treadmill right before lunch. (too hot outside and want to be here in case knee acts up).3 -
I'm still struggling with food BUT I've worked out Sat, Sun and Mon. Plan to continue to log food (even if over) and keep working out.
My jeans still fit Monday although they were a little tighter than I remember lol
I got my Hot Chocolate 5k packet yesterday. Since the race isn't until 5/2 (or 3), I put everything away to enjoy that day. It had 2 chocolate squars (I did put them in the fridge since they were liquid), 2 packets of hot chocolate and a Nuun sample. I put those in the cupboard so doggo can't get them. Jacket, medal and bib went into guest room until day of. DH says I'm too much of a stickler for not eating the chocolate until day of hahaha3 -
@quilteryoyo - I'm in CA near Disney so @ddmom0811 and I are pretty much at opposite ends of the country.
@ddmom0811 - that's incredible that the wait for a peloton is 6-7 weeks! Wow! I guess it just shows that everyone is wanting to work out and probably lots of people who normally go to the gym and can't.
@RunsOnEspresso - I got mine a few days ago. I wish I had signed up for the full 15k. I thought the medal was the same for both and the 5k medal is not nearly as cute. I do love the jacket though.
I went back and pulled out another can of the soup to log it last night and it was 790gms! and not the 500 I thought and that is per serving (2.5 servings per can). There was also some salt in the chicken even though there is no salt added. Total per serving was 547 so not too bad.
I agree on the restaurant food. I can't understand how grilled chicken even with the seasonings can have 1500gms of sodium. They must be brining the chicken or something. 🤷🏻♀️ I also watch the fat content and am always amazed even for things that are supposed to be 'lighter'.
I wanted chocolate last night before I went to bed so I had 2 dark chocolate eggs. I did not log them though. I was way under on calories so I am not too worried about it. Although maybe I should be and it would help me to lose even a pound... I am tired of being on this plateau of not gaining but not losing either no matter ho little I eat.1 -
@shanaber The run made my hip hurt. I'm unsure if pushing through to regain some muscle strength and cardiovascular endurance outweighs the residual discomfort/pain.
COVID/Doc coordination
I phoned the femur-guy's office today. I guess we are doing a tele-med visit once I go get x-rays. So, I need to go to Dallas for that. I reminded them I had an MRI in late feb... the claim is that that's too long ago to be of any use... Uh? its been 13 months since his surgery? and he should have x-rays from February... but, I yield. It's not my area of expertise. I'll go get x-rays in Dallas, again if its needed. I am not in any real hurry for answers. I just don't want to deal with this in the fall and try to manage classes. I suppose I could just focus on this shoulder and not worry about the hip. I'm just ready for something to be off of my plate. So much so I'm contemplating half-a$$ing the rest of this class that I've just checked out of since I have an 85-86 average. It's so much work and it's not even showing up in my grade. oh well. I don't even want to deal with the hip anymore.
Food.
No ideas. ate cheese sticks today in my 3.5 hour zoom class and drank coffee.
WTH?
I have been so tired. struggling tired. No idea what's up with that. I thought perhaps it was less pain and I was able to sleep. But I struggle to get up (for an 8am or 9 AM zoom class). I even took a nap yesterday til DH woke me to tell me he was going to the park, then didn't. NOTE? Text? why wake me? ugh... exhausted. The abundance of steroids that I've had the last 2 months also concerned me, what if the tiredness its adrenal related? google has no answers for me, so maybe I'm just tired.
I have tons of stuff to do still... and violin at 1.. so I better keep chipping at it, lethargically.2 -
@shanaber I debated between the 5k or 15k. I have done the in person 15k before and have the city specific chocolate bar. I get the 5k is supposed to be a cup of hot chocolate but I wish it was a different design. I ultimately went with 5k because I am slowly building my miles up and so I made it a challenge to try and get my best 5k time. I'm even doing a faster 5k plan. Tempo runs, speed work and fast finish long runs.4

Thanks guys. I woke this morning with a sense of renewed drive. Will see how long it lasts!
@elise4270 the imaging situation sounds frustrating! Did you have actual xrays in Feb or just the MRI? If it was just the MRI that's probably why he wants the xray. So annoying though!

yes. I have both. He has both actually from February. I still haven't heard if i get telemed appointment or xrays, then appointment. I'm just waiting on his decision is we're redoing the osteotomy or if I'm scheduling (eventually) with a new surgeon for hip replacement.
Hang in there today! All it take is a little win to start a streak!2 -
Welllll today I have eaten PLENTY but I don't plan to eat again until tomorrow, so that's not too bad. I've been wanting to make breakfast smoothies with kefir and blueberries and kale and spinach and beets - the night before so that way I will be full until at least lunch.
But alas. I am working fifty hours a week and then I go home and homeschool my kids in the evenings, so we are maxed out on stuff we can add to do. I am trying to get the kids to start reaching out to their teachers as well instead of solely relying on me when I get home. The teachers are still getting paid and they are available to help.
I digress. No kid has had to do this before. It's of no surprise that this is a difficult, crappy situation for all involved.
Anyway, today -
I had a banana, a tangerine, a piece of toast (made out of homemade bread so it probably had eight million calories) with raw maple almond butter on it, a protein drink x 1, then pot roast with mashed potatoes for lunch + the same for an early dinner. I ate it around 4pm so if I fast the rest of the evening, hopefully it will pan out okay.
Tomorrow evening I am going to make miso with rice noodles and mushrooms and salmon. That seems reasonable and healthy.
For lunch tomorrow, I have white beans and beets and kale salad. Should be a healthy day, overall. That is the goal. Tomorrow is a new, new day.2 -
Omg i gained 4kg in 2 days. That's 9lb.
So a reality check for myself. half of that will be glycogen stores, they are definitely well full, no issues with energy on my run this morning, actually went further than planned as it was just such an easy run. The other half is a mix of actual food volume (too too much) and water retention. Oh the water retention. Definitely feeling that!
Oh well. Back on the wagon today.

@Avidkeo I agree with the others....it’s not a normal time rn so cut yourself some slack and start fresh the next day! You’ll burn it off on a run!
@shanaber thanks for the link. Can’t wait to watch! As for salt, I wake up a full pound heavier and my eyelids are a mess when I eat out or use processed ingredients. But tbh I need to have them done!
@ddmom0811 whoa...you do have tall kids. Our son must take after my side - tall bro and his two boys are 6’5. He is out of my quarantine but not the state of Texas’s until Friday. He is working 12 hour days so he’s not going anywhere anyway! Really liking the bike! Let me know if you have any questions once you get it. Lots of great tips on their FB page too.
@Elise4270 I’m supposed to have my F/U with my doc re the femur stress fracture next week. I might put it off a few more weeks since they extended our stay at home date until May 8th. My question? How the hell is he going to know that it’s healed without another MRI...,so expensive! But I’m agree I’d to start running again unless it’s good. I’ve read that these can lead to surgery and plates if not healed. 😳
As for tiredness....last time I felt that way I had thyroiditis from a virus. Lasted about 6 weeks but then came back fine. Couldn’t get out of bed I was so tired.
I hope you feel better and finish the annoying class. DD had her prof. assign a 7 page paper that is a research proposal with 5 novel experiments. It’s an easy elective and it wasn’t in the syllabus so she was swearing up a storm yesterday. I did not make eye contact 🙄
Sorry this is so long. Food....tonight freezer food. Ahi Tuna Asian salads.2 -
Hang in there @Elise4270 . You do have a lot on your plate right now and dealing with pain and injuries doesn't help.
Yes @Avidkeo . When you gain that much in two days, chances are the majority of it is water retention. It's still frustrating though. At least you have the hope that it will go away fairly quickly.
Food for me today, Kashi cereal with strawberries for breakfast, a banana and a spoonful of peanut butter during the day (not at the same time), and chicken stir fry over brown rice for dinner tonight. I still have 600 calories to go, so will probably have a snack of some sort later.
1 -
@elise4270 - I am really surprised he wants more x-rays if they took some in February. Could it have changed much in 2-2.5 months? Also thinking maybe the exhaustion is from stress? You have had a lot going on with all the physical issues, school, and Alex coming back.
@bearly63 - would they take an x-ray of your femur on your follow up? I know when I had the stress fracture in my foot the doctor said they can't tell if it is or isn't from an x-ray (only an MRI) but once it starts to heel or is healed they can see that change on an x-ray. @avidkeo might know more though.
I had a banana before I ran this morning, my protein coffee and fig newtons when I got home then some yogurt and granola. Not sure what dinner will be. We have leftover chicken from last night but will probably have that later in the week.
I ran intervals today and had a bathroom emergency while I was far out from the bathrooms. I made it there to clean up and oh what a mess! I have been spoiled this last week with no stomach issues... until today ☹️ and all I had to eat beforehand was the banana.
Oh and my grocery order came (YAY!). Several items were 'not' available including the small ham I wanted for a 'make up' easter dinner. Also no bread but I got the burger buns so we will BBQ maybe on Friday or Saturday. The veggies look great honestly, as are the bananas. No tomatoes for dh though.
3 -
@bearly63 I'm lucky, for now, I still have 2 insurances and pay little to nothing for the MRI's. I don't mind going. I don't mind waiting. Soon classes will be done and I'll be netflixed out.
I can't believe your DD's instructor pulled that. We has to sign a new syllabus agreement for the post-covid era. If she didn't, she might be able to fight it, if she's up to it. But that may cause so much strife. I have a 3 page paper and its so short and limiting. 7 pages would be easier. Tell her to put in a long block quote or two.
food
add pizza, fritos and bean dip...
@Avidkeo hugs on the 9lbs! use it for good, motivation! (i should go make soup)
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I went from grumpy to tired in the last week, so maybe it is a stress response.2 -
@shanaber - oh no on the bathroom issue. That's the worst. That's how my bathroom issues happen. Just when I think I'm over it, it comes back. I have just thrown out the clothing at times!
That's great that you got the order and that the veggies look good!
@bearly63 - did the class from in-person to online? If so, the professor is probably grasping at straws trying to figure out what's enough but not too much and failing on the what's too much! I know all the teachers are.
@elise4270- I also read that many of us are tired from the underlying stress of this pandemic. Maybe you don't feel panic attacks or a strong stress during the day, but it's just there underneath everything and it tires us out.
@avidkeo - It's amazing how fast we can add "pounds" though I agree they aren't real pounds added on, (or kgs), it is just temporary.
@Camaramandy648 - definitely have the kids contact the teachers! Especially during the day. My high school students send me all these questions starting around now until 1am! I think I may send them a message, it's fine to ask me a question at any time, but I run early and try to shut down school around 5! The teachers will be happy to know your kids want help!
2 -
@shanaber So sorry about the stomach issues! Maybe the ham is a blessing...we had one on Sunday and it was so salty. Glad you got some fresh veggies. An XRay would be a no brainer....
@Elise4270 lol....love the quote idea. The lady even told them 1/2 in margins. For all I know, she knew about it but forgot....I have learned to keep the lips zipped. That girl can throw shade with the best of them. She basically said exactly what you said....a class that means nothing and she could care a less about but just wants it over and "A" to help the old gpa.... fritos and bean dip....so good!
Is it Friday yet? I have lost track....just keeping hashmarks on a wall these days....sigh......
1 -
@ddmom0811 That's what I was thinking. It's got to be so hard. That was actually one of her 2 in person classes so its a total shift. Her comment? She won't even bother to read them. I think she is just done....studied for the MCAT since January and both April and May have been cancelled. And hasn't seen her gals/roomates in a over month so she is cranky. Hope your teaching is going ok....so hard!2

I’m sure whiny today.
The positives
I’ve had a lighter load this week or am just better organized. I am a week ahead in two classes and two weeks in another. The “B” class I am not ahead, but have 2 of the 3 assignments due at noon tomorrow done. The third I got spent and need to look stuff up. So... tomorrow is a good violin day and study for the exam Friday and start studying for tuesdays (the challenging B class).
It’s bed time, and I’m tired. I’ll probably sleep.
I got mr wiggle bottom, suckling on his blankie, purring for me. Sweetest little snuggles ever. You should see his walk/ wiggles. Er, cat swagger.
Since I’m not behind, I might have time to go for a walk tomorrow.
The shoulder wasn’t a bother during violin.
Ordered dd some painting stuff today to be here by her bday
And tomorrow, I might not over eat.
The baby blankie sucker.3 -
All right here's the smoothie. It's pretty freaking good and I wish I had always been doing this
Kale
Bluberry kefir
raspberries
blueberries
beets
beet greens
twenty2 nutrition protein powder
4 -
@Camaramandy648 - wow, looks amazing! I never think to add greens to my smoothie. Did you use fresh berries? I use mainly frozen fruits in mine.
@elise4270 - great on the classes! Whiny is okay. We all deserve to be that way these days! Have you seen where some students are suing their college because of switching to online classes?
We ordered the Peloton last night! I feel a little odd about ordering it in these times. But, our health is worth it, so I rationalized.
I had trouble falling asleep last night I think because I was hungry. Besides not wanting to add calories to my day (another good day), I was too lazy to have to deal with Invisalign to have a snack. So on to another day of logging everything. I ran on treadmill this morning for 40 mins and may do another short one later. My knee looks awful but I don't have any pain, and for that I am thankful!
2 -
@Elise4270 Your kitten is so cute! Sounds like you are doing good with getting your school work done. Glad the shoulder didn't bother you while playing the violin.
@Camaramandy648 All those ingredients look yummy. I haven't tried smoothies yet. It's on my list.1 -
My favorite smoothie is a chocolate cherry. I never added greens but I'm sure you could.
It was frozen cherries, unsweetened cocoa powder, milk (of your choice), sweetner (of your choice - I did honey) and protein powder (if you want - I did unflavored but chocolate would probably work). It was so good!3 -
@Elise4270 I am not a cat person due to bad allergy but that is one cute cat! And whining actually may burn calories and is good for mental health. (Don't quote me on that....)
@ddmom0811 I always throw spinach or kale into every smoothie, whether its cacao/banana/ pb or fruity....can't taste it but a great way to get more greens. I had invisalign years ago and I lost weight because they were hard to remove. I need them now for that very reason. I was able to rationalize the Peloton by cancelling yoga classes which cost the same per month and not being able to run....I really think it will be a great cross-training once I am out again on the road and the other classes are great. Glad your knee is feeling better.2 -

@ddmom0811 FRESH everything except the blueberries were frozen.0 -

I hope suing the college is a course project for law students. Otherwise, seriously? wow, I thought I was whiny! I'm lucky, home school-college is my cup of tea. They extended our withdraw date til May 5th, rather generous. And offer laptops and internet to those in need. We also can take a "P" if say, the C or B negatively effects our GPA. or a NP which also isn't weighing on the GPA... so, why cry?
Congratulations on the Peloton order! wow! That is exciting and nice to have a safe alternative when needed. I thought about dragging my bike outside. But it rained and the trails are muddy. I wasn't sure I wanted to get the road bike out since my focus is always distance. Trail is time. Today is still too muddy. Last time to went out in the mud on dirt/gravel trails I broke my rear derailleur. I'm always encouraged to get on mine when I hear of your rides. I may do something with one of them today. Glad to hear the knee is good today.
Drama
1030AM Alex shows up drunk. DD took him home.
Food
I treated myself to 7 triscuts, jalapeno stuffed olives and cheese. 15 minutes til i had diarrhea. Wheat is suspect, although, I feel that I've had enough evidence to put it on the no-no list.
Coffee
I still never made chicken soup... maybe today?
Shoulder
hangin' in there.
Doc
No word.
Tiredness
still a bit tired. I think I wake a lot with the shoulder. It's really hard to get in a position without pain. So, I'm probably not sleeping well. Not looking forward to PT tomorrow, it's suppose to be with some young whipper-snapper working on his BS in PT... swear, he better not be so green that he makes me cry.4 -
Sorry to hear about Alex. I heard on the news this morning that this is a really tough time for those in recovery from addiction. Hope the PT doesn't make you cry.1
